"Nah, it just takes like alcohol. It's a totally different animal." Toby looked back off toward the kitchen. "Oh, yeah, that might have been helpful." Well, Dari could show her or they'd all just end up at breakfast tomorrow and he could show her where the glasses were then. "Try the tea. Just one more sip." If she didn't like it, she didn't like it. He would stop trying. He grabbed the remote and began to flick through channels. Infomercials, old tv shows, more infomercials. Definitely boring enough to put them to sleep. He decided on an old barely-color episode of a show he vaguely remembered and smiled to Maia.

"So. You want to talk?"

Maia tried the tea again as instructed. She beamed. It was good! It was as if the flavor had taken an immediate change for the better. "How'd you do that?" She asked. "It was terrible before, but now it's good."

"I don't really know what to talk about," She admitted. "Anything's fine with me."

Toby smiled. "A little bit of cream and sugar. You can do it with any tea." Just because he preferred them black didn't mean she had to. Lots of people preferred their tea and coffee with cream and sugar.

He leaned back then and made a thinking face, drawing a thumb down his stubbly jawline. "Uh. Hmm." What could they talk about that was neither depressing nor especially exciting?

"What's your favorite color?" Dari asked.

Toby gave a thoughtful frown and a nod. That was good enough!

Maia had answered that question before, it was one of the staples in befriending children. "Blue," she said. "Like the ocean. And the sky, it's beautiful. Some fish, But brightly colored ones don't stay around where I lived. Too cold. What u about you two? What's your favorite colors?"

Toby immediately reacted to the question. "AUHK-- you can't-- No. You just can't."

Dari was grinning.

"He can see dozens more colors than we can. At least he says so, he might just be a liar."

"So few to pick from, fragile humanity..."

"I like blue myself."

"Most people do. It's a very popular color."

"I bet he can," Maia said. "Tell me about colors we can't see," She invited Dari. What was it like to see all those colors no one else could see? And What color was the ocean really? "What do you see when you look at the ocean?"

"Everyone says blue is a calming color, but I lived in the ocean so I never saw it that way. Its so full of life!"

"Hah." Toby leaned back and looked to Dari. He'd asked the same question a long time ago and they had never come to a satisfactory conclusion.

"I-- hm." Dari's face blanked and he peered off through the floor. How to describe things that others couldn't fathom? "It's hard to explain. There aren't words for any of these things. It's like the rainbow, but different? The ocean is myriad colors, but it is mostly blue, yes, because the sky is mostly blue."
PostPosted: Sat Aug 15, 2015 11:07 am

"Well, we'll have to to think of words." Languages were somewhat lacking, she decided, if they couldn't describe things unseeable. "I heard the ocean reflected the sky, but I don't think it'd be clear If it didn't." Maia considered. The ocean got darker and darker blue the deeper it was, until finally it was black.

That was a reasonable enough idea. Of course his people had had 'words' for colors as far as they spoke, but it wasn't exactly comparable to human speech. Dari nodded.

"That's a fair theory." Without light it might be something else altogether, but they'd never know, at least not now. "Tap water is clear, though, regardless of where it comes from. Mostly clear, anyway." Hard water was still a thing.

"This has gotten very philosophical very fast," Toby mused.

Maia yawned. She rubbed at her eyes and said, "I think the salt makes the ocean darker than regular water. But lakes look green and sometimes blue. I heard they clean the tap water, maybe that's why it's clear?" she leaned back on her seat.

"Philosophical means thoughtful, doesn't it?"

"It does," Dari said with a nod. "There's the blue from the sky and then the color of the water and everything inside of it. Humans don't want to drink water with moss in it."

Toby yawned and stretched out, arms laying across the back of the couch. Water contamination. Very entertaining. Bah.

...well, that was probably why Dari was talking about it anyway. He turned to the alien briefly.

"Not quite," Toby said, "Close, though." He rubbed an eye.

"Or salt water. But salt water tastes awful." She made a face. "People are strange, though. They like to let small fish nibble at them and they think the fish are eating the dead skin. I think they're trying to eat them. Sharks are fish: and they certainly don't appreciate being nibbled on then."

Maia shifted positions to make herself more comfortable. Dari was very nowledgable, but this subject was also lacking any entertainment.

"Salt water will dehydrate a person far faster than no water," Dari responded. He thought it might be working. "Some fish only eat dead flesh, just like some... other things only eat dead flesh. There has recently been a video on the internet about a small fish that bites a man's n****e, though."

"...why have you watched that?"

"I didn't go looking for it."

Maia leaned against Dari, giving another yawn. "There's these sharks called cookie cutter sharks and they make a small hole in a whale and eat them. Sometimes they eat other things too. Maybe that's the fish."

"You found me on the internet too. You should show me how to look up videos tomorrow."

"Actually, they're a very small carp," Dari offered. He was full of useless information, it was true, but sometimes it proved to serve a purpose. For example, he was now boring a tea-drugged selkie to sleep.

"It's scarily easy," Toby said, "The internet's full of fake crap. In fact it's probably mostly fake crap."
