Wait, so Sonic and Mario are rivals? Since when? I guess it sort of makes since because they come from two different companies, but Sega now works for Nintendo.. don't they?

Well, back in the old-school days, one might consider them rivals. The two large consoles back then were the Sega Genesis and NES. And their main characters? Sonic and Mario.
No, Sega doesn't work for Nintendo, nor is it a subdivision of Nintendo. The two are seperate companies. But due to the failure of the Sega Dreamcast (thanks to the PS2), Sega started becoming a third-party producer, making software and not hardware.

O.o Hmm okay, thank you... but now that that's settled I have an even bigger question.
Why do people pay attention to the condition of the company if you're not working for them?! Well I guess if you're really into game productions...

Well, we all have our favorites. I'm a fan of Nintendo and Sega, because they have great games. So if Sega decides not to make game consoles, I should be concerned.
This is just back-of-my-head knowledge. I don't pay that much attention.

I have a Dreamcast.... that hasn't been given back to me yet, and it's been a year. sweatdrop Ah well, we live. It wasn't as if I played it a lot. Sega has a lot of good games. 3nodding

=3 I heard one memorable thing about it. People get so excited that the wireless remotes fly from their hands and smash into the t.v screens. Breaking it of course. XD It's funny because it isn't my t.v
