OMG TO ALL YOU SAX PLAYERS: DO NOT USE RICO REEDS. NOT RICO, NOT RICO ROYAL, NOT RICO JAZZ. There is a reason that they are cheaper than all the other brands! They give you a thinner sound, and no playing strength whatsoever, nor do they train your tounge to become faster or stronger. I can not tell you how many sax players go playing with ricos for years before they audition for something and they dont make it because THEY USE A TERRIBLE REED AND HAVE BAD SOUND. If you switch reeds, it may be more difficult at first, but it will help you master your sound and you will sound better than ever before. I PROMISE.
And another thing, you should be moving up in reed thickness about 1/2 a size every year from the year that you start playing, or every 2 years. I have been playing for 6 years, and I play on Vandoren 3 1/2 or 4.

I don't know about you but I haven't ever had any trouble with Rico's..... except when their dead, but that doesn't count, because that goes for all reeds. Honestly I've been one of the better musicians in my band while playing on a Rico. Switching to Vandoren didn't change anything.

i totally agree with you there..i am one of the best sounding saxophones and i just switched to a Rico 3 but Rico is the only type i will get a guy at the store asked me if i wanted the Rico Royal and all of the other ones i said no ill just stick to the rico..

MMK. i have many questions about reeds. like how do you make your own, and where do you get the stuff to make your own. another question is how do you flavor reeds or where do you get flavored reeds? and also do they harm your instrument?? (i play an alto sax, and i use Gonzala reeds from argentina.)I would like to get some spearment flavored reeds. but at what general music store? around me that i know of we have an eastside music and an A&G music store.

Nah, i agree with the Robot Dragon guy. Rico's break sooo easily and they are cheap for that reason. vandoren's are better but there is a new company that my lessons teacher(who also teaches the elemtary schools of the district) let me try out, and they are called gonzalla's. they might be a little but more expensive. but you get more of htose good reeds htat last you a long time in the boxes. you know how when you play on a knew reed and it takes you like a good tow to three days to get used to the reed and make your tone good? well on gonzalla's you just suck on it the first day and it's like you've been playing on it for a week! All i'm saying is that Gonzalla's work for me. i guess that what works for you is a reed of inconvienience. byt he way i play a saxophone on gonzallla uhm...2 3/4 thickness...i think. i was a 3 on vandoren and on rico but that's another thing, gonzalla's are stronger so they give you a better tone and i guess don't break as easilly.

just wondering- what are the best reeds because i use a rico 2 1/2 and it work pretty well for me but some times it is hard to tune up because of my old hand-me-down sax that is over 30 years old! and how in the word do you make reeds? i have never heard of that!

The best reed...?

It's all up to the performer smile

But if you're looking for a higher-quality reed, try out a Vandoren Traditional. Ricos are great for tight budgets but every once in a while it's a good idea to spring for better quality.

Yeah, for me, I had to pay for my own reeds, so I got Ricos...
But some guy donated Vandoren reeds for the bass clarinets. mad

Malachipony: Lol, I use Rico 2 1/2 and the bari sax I use at school is over 25 years old. When my BD told me that, I started freaking out and obessively cleaning the mouthpiece. xp

hey kidd. i'm wondering htis too! how do you make reeds?? anyone?? do you like take a potato pealer to a piece of bamboo?? idk, but rico's are bad vandoren's are ok, but the best reed tht i have come across are gonzalla's. they're a little more expensive but have great quality, they are strong, have alot of those kind of reeds that like last you a month in each box, and they give great tone. but it really does depend on the musician. cause for some people rico's and vandoren's work. but i used to use them and my henver i got a new one my Lesson's teacher would have to take out his little reed tools and fix them.

i like to use hemkies. they really attack in pitches and has a brighter sound for Jazz band. i also like Vandorens because its plays a soft melow sound for concert band. the standart Reeds (rico) are the average of all of them. if i remember, Ricos work well with the student edition instruments. even though there are better reads you can use for different reasons.

I desperately need a different brand of Bass Clarinet reeds. I currently use Vandoren, and I can usually find one decent reed from the box of 5. But at $10-15 I find it crazy to only have one from the whole set. Then, of course, the reed doesn't last more than two weeks. I loved my Vandoren Bb reeds, but the bass clarinet reeds are disappointing.

Does anyone use synthetic reeds? I've heard split things about them. They last longer, but sound worse... etc.

I saw that a few others have bass clarinet reeds, and I'm considering ordering a box each of: Rigolli, and Grand Concert Select.(Possibly a synthetic) Does anyone have any suggestions?

You can order reed flavors online, you simply soak the reed in the liquid. I personally wouldn't, but I don't think it would harm your instrument.

on the clarinet i use between a size 4&5
on the tenor sax i use between a size 3-4

Mitchell Laurie are my favorites with a close follow by Vandoren V-12

I'm an oboist/saxophonist.
I make oboe reeds, but I'm not so good at it. I also play english horn, but I can't make reeds for it.

Yeah, I play alto, too. Bari saxophonists are sorta out there, but it's all good. They are woodwinds, after all.

eek wow the only time my BD assigns a size two reed is when a woodwind just started and still cant get a note out other than that hell asign a 2 1/2...shocked a BD would assign that low for just a beginner on clarinet (especially someone thats good on the saxophone)..what sax do you play?
