Well, I agree that he has no intention of hurting Sakura, much less kill her. He's has his goal of killing Itachi. Beside Sakura, and even Naruto are still important to him.
And... I wish that Sakura could've at least got one good smack at Sasuke!

Notice how softish the expression on his face looked. He obviously didn't want to intentionaly hurt Sakura. Also, when he strikes he kind of does it half heartedly. He's still believing that he has to severe his bonds, that's the only reason he strikes. He would definitely not kill her if Yamato didn't come in the way. He probably just decided to defend himself or atleast do something because she was attacking him? Well, that's my train of thought.

I'm a major fan of Naruto because of this stuff....
Kishimoto, over the years, has a certain way of drawing things to let a large variety of ideas come into play, so there are different interpretations from different people.
But what I think is that, like others have said, Sasuke's expression looked soft when he saw Sakura, judging by his eyes. Then, when he saw Sakura was really going to fight him, his eyes widened.
THEN, if you look at his eye the third time, there looks like there's a little stress mark (the extra black line) under his eye. Kishimoto, I've noticed, puts stress lines whenever someone in the manga is uncertain, nervous, scared...
Sooo, I think Kishimoto was originally thinking Sasuke would be suprised of Sakura's attack, then, having no other choice, had to give the impression to Sakura that he isn't going to back down.
But like everyone else also said, the angle was a little strange to really hit Sakura directly.

I agree with this <3 I agree too, I don't think he would have killed her. I think he had to do something, he couldn't just stand there as she attacked him. 3nodding

ya i think he wouldnt have killed her he doesnt do things that dont have a perpose like he left becasue he wants to get stronger to kill itachi...anyway so why would he kill the girl that he tryed to protect so many times... wow this really makes you think...

I agree SiretaInDisguise. I think that Sasuke wouldn't have killed his important people off like that. At most, I think he'd just injure them because they're in his way. He hesitated and fought since he was forced to. In the end, didn't you notice that Sakura was untouched? Maybe, Sasuke knew that Yamato was going to be in front of her.

What if Sasuke knew Yamato was going to block the attack and raised his sword?
When I run fast I lower myself the the ground and crouch a little instead of running strait up and down. When Sakura throws a punch she throws herself down to the floor and stops herself with her fist (most offten) lowering herself even more if she had been running like me. She could totally dodge the sword if Sasuke had no intentions of moving the blade.

We also need to remmeber that Sasuke spent the greater part of Part 1 PROTECTING Sakura in every way he could (from freaking out when he'd hear her scream, to jumping in the way of an attack, to harming those who had hurt her when he couldn't protect her, to stabbing HIMSELF in order to save them from Orochimaru). omg i never put it all together like that... it makes so much sense. he was pretty much always protecting her, he tried to kill naruto but i dont think he could kill sakura... maybe after this is all over ( havent gotten that far into the series) he'll explain all of this to us. heart and we'll have sasusaku babies swoons
