Pull Yourself Together!
Life had been moving in the fast lane ever since Alexa had landed here. There were strange people everywhere she turned, new experiences, horrors she had never imagined in her wildest dreams plaguing her like a horrid sickness, and the burning desire to get to the bottom of the problem she was somehow a part of. The only moment she'd truly relaxed, if only for a moment, was when Maryke's now-lemur body had been so close that she'd managed to touch the silky fur. A single caress had put a halt to her frenzied thoughts. It was like a breath of fresh air in a room filling with gas. But now, she hadn't come into contact with Maryke in weeks. In fact, the only person she had seen since that was Lauren, who was suspiciously homosexual in nature and thought that Alexa was a part of the mafia!
Well, not like Alexa wasn't acting suspicious. I've been acting like a total idiot, she told herself in her brain. She had been hulled up in her duplex again, trying to regain her thoughts, her control... her sense of self. There was no point in running around like a turkish spinning top never wanting to slow down! It was driving her insane, among other things. And yet, the cause of all this frantic movement, constant searching, and step outside of herself was something so simple! Questions filled her brain, never being answered. She wanted them out, out, OUT! She had tried to figure it out, she had talked to people, but she hadn't gotten anywhere! And what was worse, she hadn't even acted like herself once, spare the times she saw Maryke, and even then she was bitter. Oh, Alexa, where did you go?
She had to figure these things out. Her head just couldn't handle it all. She knew so little, even though she'd come into contact with a few islanders. This whole ordeal was overwhelming her. Aubrey had tricked her somehow into coming... Alexa knew that much. That meant that Aubrey was a bad guy. Which made the labs inherently bad as well. This also meant that the injection given to Alexa was going to destroy her somehow, or destroy Maryke, or both of htem. That meant she was on a path that ended in certain death, insanity, or murder. Either way, she was doomed and the end seemed near and bleak. But why had this happened? What was Aubrey's beef with Maryke? It had to have something to do with Billy. She knew something about him now... anyway. He was a sea creature, probably something that squirted ink.... a cuddlefish or squid, maybe? She didn't know... she wasn't sure she wanted to know! At first, she had been pushed to the edge of insanity to figure this mystery out by running around asking everyone everything. That hadn't done her any good.
She'd said too much everywhere she went, her brain had turned off, turned on, gone into hyperdrive and completely shut down. The only thing left for it to do was to return to normal. Generally speaking, Alexa knew she had a good, level head on her shoulders. She just had to find it again. Whatever the reason she was on this island, it was for evil. Evil towards Maryke. She struggled with this realization for quite some time before agreeing, with grim certainty, that it couldn't be avoided. Something bad was looming on the horizon, in the shadows of her still-pending transformation into a beast.
Alexa pressed her body deeper into the water. The warm jets massaged her aching muscles as she tried to relieve the tension and the impending doom and depression of her thoughts. Not even the scent of cherry blossoms was helping her entirely. Fate had finally dealt Alexa another poor hand. She thought that after she had gotten away from her family, the torment would end, but no. Then there were times with Maryke where it was even worse, and then times without Maryke. There was also that period of absolute isolation and lonliness. She had thought that her ordeal was over now that she was with Maryke, in the same place, and then that b***h Aubrey had injected her with some poison. If Alexa thought hard enough, she imagined she could feel it pulsing through her veins, preparing her to be ripped apart by the senses of the beast that was about to be introduced in her. She hated it. She wanted it to stop.
She knew she had no control over it. Aubrey had silently killed her. She had silently won already. It was just a matter of how far Alexa let this plan go on with her as the fodder and the weapon. Alexa knew she was strong, but how strong? Strong enough to resist whatever was going to happen? She hadn't even experienced a change yet! She had no idea what was coming, how much it would hurt, how much it would paralyze or cripple her! There was nothing left to do but wait. She had tried to act like everything was fine, and like she was okay with being on the island and turning into an animal, but the more she tried the more she came back to this fact, and the more real it became. And, on top of that, she knew now that she was to be Maryke's enemy. She didn't have solid proof, she didn't know what she'd turn into, but she could sense it deep within her body.
Maybe I ought to drown... She thought, but she knew that would be hard. It was nearly impossible to drown yourself, let alone in a bath tub. Plus, that would be stupid. She knew that Maryke was hungering for the past, just as Alexa was herself. If she killed herself, Maryke might be more devastated than if she was alive and ready to destroy her at any moment. Alexa's fingers dug deep into her scalp and pulled down at her brunette locks. God, if only she hadn't come! If she hadn't gone to LA to meet with Maryke again, none of this would have happened! She would probably not care about her parents since they were crappy parents, and she probably would still miss her brother a lot, but even without Maryke's business to escape, she would have been better off!
No! Pull yourself together! she screamed in her head. She knew if she hadn't come to Los Angeles, she wouldn't have been wrapped up in Maryke, but she also would have been dragged to the underbelly of New York City, where she knew she would eventually succumb to some lethal combination of drugs. Maryke had saved her life, in that regard... and again, when the FBI was tracking Alexa down. She owed everything to Maryke: her nice things, her loft, her status, and her life. It was better this way. Eventually, things would run their course... but Alexa needed Maryke to survive. Maybe she would never figure out the entire story behind Aubrey, Billy, and Maryke... but maybe that didn't matter. There were more important things to do! She wasn't an animal yet, and she wasn't a tool to the Labs, which she knew were evil, which also made Lauren evil--at least to some extent.
So, there was only one thing left to do: live it up. Enjoy it while she could, worry about things when the time came to worry, and stop digging where her nose didn't belong. Afterall, there was a beach, a sunny day, beer, exotic plants to take in.... everything she could want on a vacation. Why not make this a vacation? But not a vacation away from herself like she thought before... a vacation into herself.
Feeling better after thinking everything through and finally coming to the light at the end of the tunnel, Alexa slipped out of the warm water. Drying herself with a crimson towel, she looked at herself in the mirror, letting the first non-forced smile in ages take over her lips. She liked that look. It was the sweet one she'd lost. No more worries. Moving into the bedroom, she changed into some silky pjs before getting under the blankets and turning out the light. Tomorrow was a new day. A new beginning.

Alexa's time on the island has been arguably lucky. Most of the other newcomers are robbed of their humanity within the first few weeks of their stay, barely having time to come to face with their imprisonment before something even more innate is taken from them. Of course, on the flip side, Alexa has been pointedly human in the face of the other "Freaks". Not yet having gone through the initiation to become one of "them". Now, that time has come. She wakes up suddenly, a mad itchy spot on her left tricep... it bares much similarity to a mosquito bite... except that about an hour later, she begins to feel hot, nauseous, and achy. A slow, building pain begins at the base of her spine as, slowly, a long, hairless tail begins to form growing steadily. While it marches along, vertebrae by vertebrae, the nails on your toes harden and blacken, growing out into small claws. Your ears pull and widen, becoming unmistakably animalistic, and your nose itches as the pores expand, darken, and moisten - pulling smells to your awareness. While your sense of smell is not yet much enhanced, you start to become much more aware of scents, and your nose can pick them up more readily.
