Marki's head jerked up, so fast you could actually hear some rattling from within the armour. "Some one's telapathing in the building."

"How do you know?" Rita asked, slightly startled. She hadn't felt anything at all.

"Rheana," the velvety voice said gently, "we need your help."
"What do you mean?" Rheana asked.
"This time of rule needs to come to an end. Our official Master Mage is trying to stop us from practicing magic our way. It is our magic, is it not? Forces have been sent to try and stop us. Cervis's forces are not enough. We need more mages if we are to stop this reign of control."
"Cervis?" Rheana asked, confused. Something tickled at the back of her mind, a faint reminder of...something.
"A great mage," the voice replied. "He has joined with Lokran in an attempt to stop this corruption. Lokran should be Master Mage of this land. He has enlisted the help of many great mages, but we need you, too."
"How can I help?" Rheana asked, sitting up.
"You can join us."
"I...all right." Rheana tried desperately to hold onto the thought that was floating in her mind. Something about Cervis, she thought. Who was he?
A tight grip descended upon her mind, making her cry out in pain.
"Shhh," the velvety voice said. "Sleep. These thoughts are not for you to think."
Elmani watched with satisfaction as Rheana's eyes closed. "At last," she whispered. "We are complete."

Rita cast a doubtful look around the room, then shrugged. "All right," she said, "I think Sheliaho's going to be able to find us anyway." She took a step to the door, then hesitated. "After you," she said, gesturing to the hallway.

Marki nodded. "Alright." He drew his sword, and cautiously opened the door. Peering out, he saw no danger, and stepped out.

Rita followed him down the hallway. Unconsciously, her hand ran along the walls until it hit something. "Ow!" Rita yelped. She felt around the wall. There was an invisible knob or something along it. Without thinking, Rita turned it.
The wall whooshed open. Inside was a dark stairwell. Rita gulped and turned to Marki. "Should we go down?" she asked.

Elmani's head snapped up. "Did you hear that?" she hissed to the shadows in lurking in the background. One of them shook its head. "Someone's in the stairwell!"
Instantly, the shadows began moving toward the opening. One small one hung back.
"Go!" Elmani snarled, and it skittered away. Rheana shifted, disturbed by the sound. Elmani tightened her grip on Rheana's mind.
In her dream, Rheana was hit by a sudden headache. She gave a short cry as she curled into a tight ball, trying to fend off the pain.

Marki walked up slowly, "I don't know, someth..." He noticed a movement, something coming up the stairs very fast. "Get back!" he pushed Rita out of the way.

Rita gasped as a shadow flew out of the doorway. It hit the wall and crumpled to the ground. More shadows were streaming out of the opening, and they surrounded Marki and Rita.
"Okay," Rita said in a barely controlled voice, "what do we do now?"

"If i had an army i'd know what to do..." he said dryly, it hit him like a hammer, "Why'd I say that?"

Rita cracked a smile and shrugged. "Well, we don't have an army," she said. "I guess we'll have to fight our way out of this one."

Elmani shook Rita awake. "The enemy has found us," she said, while Rheana rubbed her eyes and sat up. "Come, we must hurry."
"Where?" Rheana asked groggily, standing up. Elmani began climbing the stairs, motioning for Rheana to follow.
"We must escape. Some of our men are fighting them right now. Hurry. We will be able to teleport outside." Rheana followed Elmani as as they climbed the spiraling staircase.
Elmani halted at the top and peeked out. "Ready?" Elmani asked. "Go!"
They burst from the door, only to find two mages standing there, watching.

Marki hit one shadow with the butt end of his hilt, then slashed at another, "Any ideas?"

"Um..." Rita said as she kicked at another shadow. "I could try something. I'm not very good at it, though." Without waiting for an answer, she closed her eyes. Magic glowed in a brilliant circle around her as she drew upon her magic. It gradually grew, spinning around Rita as she tightened her grip on it. She couldn't lose control of it now. She reached out, drawing on the consciousness of everybody close to her. She felt the shadows and grabbed them, weaving them into her magic. They writhed in agony to touch something so pure. Easy, she thought, let it out slowly, don't lose control...She could feel them disintegrating. Encouraged, Rita reached out more and touched an unfamiliar presence. She felt shock, dismay, and then--pain bombarded her as the person tried taking control. She cried out and her magic was unleashed.
Something opened, and both Marki and Rita were thrown into the vortex where the other two unfamiliar beings were headed.
