(( events occurring IC mid-April)) Prolixity's journal Gaia has seen fit to gift Abishai with a child of his own, a tiny kitsune baby with white wings. The cathedral is really no place for a baby, and so they will be staying here for a while. Blue is delighted. Merlyn has taken the change in routine as he takes all changes in routine: with a squalling fit about it the first time a change occurs, then calm acceptance. Strange child. Probably it's genetic. Not that it's much of a change in routine. Shai spends more time here than he does at home, these days, and has gotten far more comfortable with the children. A good thing. It's kind of a package deal.

Prolixity's journal Merlyn has taken very easily to the concept of toilet training, thankfully. It took Anen a little while to get accustomed to the concept; it only took Merl a couple of repetitions of the explanation that the potty is really just like the litterbox, only you flush it rather than burying it. Thank goodness for feline instinct. "BATMAN!" "Indoor voice, kiddo," Prox shushed Merlyn. The kitten squirmed in the shopping cart seat and pointed at the package of underpants again. "Batman undies, Daddy!" "What do you say when you're asking for something?" Prox smiled. "Pleeeeeeeeeease?" Merlyn stretched out, trying to get at the package himself. Prox took the package off the hook and handed it to his younger son. "Here you go, kiddo. Let's go buy these, and then they'll be all yours, because you did such a good job learning how to use the potty." "Batman undies, Batman undies, Batman undies," Merlyn said gleefully, and kicked the shopping cart until told to stop.

Arafel Arafel smiled slightly at the familiar sights and smells that rushed through the door of the clinic. She skillfully manuvered the twin-stroller through the doorway, vaugly wondering how long it had been since they were last here... Even after all that had happend so far it seemed like only yesterday when she had first stumbled apon the clinic. Either way, it was nice to be back... Arafel had figured she and the twins had needed some time away from the house, it had become a fairly depressing setting after the mysterious dissaperance of Freize.
Iteru was quietly taking in the sights as they entered, having lost his energy from playing with the toddler infront of him on the way there. There had been much fun of hair chewing and ear tugging while Futoeki struggled to return the playful attack. And now he was seeming to doze off as he often did after playing.
Futoeki was still lively as ever though, curiously straining to see over the back of his seat in wonder of what had happend to his playmate. "Bohda?" he questioned, having learned a few new words since his first.
Arafel smiled a bit "He's sleepy..." she informed the bluehaired twin.
"Sleeefeee?" Futoeki repeated curiously. "Sleesleesleesleee" he giggled a bit, throwing his arms in the air as he decided to start screaming slee over and over again.
Arafel flinched a bit, "Shhh..." she hushed at him, trying to hold back a laugh since that would only encourage the tot to continue.Prolixity "DADDY FASTER!" "Indoor voice, Merlyn." Prolixity kept hold of his younger son's hand as he opened the door, making sure the kitten wasn't going to bolt off into the waiting room of the clinic like a cyclone with feet. Since Merlyn had figured out how to balance on two feet, keeping track of him had become even more of a full-time job than it already had been. "There might be babies sleeping, so we need to be quiet." "Faster," Merlyn whined, and tugged on his father's hand. He paused for a moment when he spotted the stroller, ears going up with curiosity. "Who that?" "Who is that," Prox corrected patiently. "I don't know. Let's go see. ... Indoor voice!" he cautioned, as Merlyn scrambled over the minute he was released. Junyi Jokeph was torn. Did he interfere with the trance Luna seemed to have put herself in, or did he leave her there, sitting upside-down in one of the clinic's hard plastic chairs, legs crossed at the ankles and her frilly skirt barely protecting her modesty? With a sigh, he simply remained motionless for the moment, keeping a ear open for any improper doings. Luna seemed simply content to sit in the clinic with her mind open, listening to the thoughts and emotions of those projecting them, and he wasn't going to stop her. Arafel Arafel's attention was brought as a child bolted up to them. A smile tugged at her lips as she knelt down to greet the newcomer "Hello there..." The sight and sound of children alone was enough to brighten her day, and new peopel always seemed to distract the twins from the thought of their missing father.
Futoeki perked up, "Boohaaa, Ook!" he pointed to the child next to their stroller, only receiving a sleepy toddler's half attempt to look where he was pointing. Futoeki was well aware that he wasn't realyl going to get a responce when his sibling was like this, and if he kept trying Arafel was likely to scold him to let the other boy sleep... So he let it go, deciding in his toddler mind his brother could join him later in figuring out what the new thing was. "Slee..." he mumbled the word, before something hit him... Yes. This new person must be a slee! That was the only logical answere. "Sleeslee!" he exclaimed happilly, nearly pulling himself over the side of the stroller while pointing. Oh yes, he was a genious. Prolixity "Hi! Who is you?" Merlyn peered over the side of the stroller with great interest, holding onto it to keep his balance for the moment. Two others! And a mama. And there was someone over there who felt weird, but she wasn't actively poking him, and so he ignored her for now in favor of the people his size. Prox padded after Merlyn at a more sedate pace, smiling. He dipped a quick bow to the woman with the two toddlers. "Hi. Merlyn's loud, but friendly," he said. Akivara Kita ran up the sidewalk, looking over her shoulder and almost stumbling several times. Eventually the little hell-hound girl made it through the door, looking around in a paranoid manner before stuffing herself into a seat not visible from the front door and windows and curled into a ball, making herself as small as possible. Junyi At Merlyn's notice of her, Luna turned her head slightly toward him, not quite looking at him, but more looking through him and the toddlers and parents. There was something... weirdly familiar about him, but she couldn't quite place her finger on-- Ah! There it was! It was there when she'd spoken to Ilex before. And that meant... She lowered herself from the chair awkwardly, skirt falling over her face as she flipped backward. Her feet hit the ground with a loud clack, and as her skirt finally righted itself, she made her way over to the others, gaze fixated on Merlyn. Ruveila Hokuten The doors to the clinic opened to reveal a silver hooded and cloaked figure that smelt of sunscreen and rose petels. her eyes glowed blood red from under the hood of the cloak and where her hands were exposed, snow white skin was shown in her tiny digits. She could not have been more than 5-10 years old and a few strands of dark raven black hair fell from under the cloak. The figure darted into a lesser lit corner of the main room of the clinic and sat down. Arafel Futoeki blinked as he was questioned, taking a moment to place the words. Oh wait! He knew this one, "Fuutowkee." He smiled widely as he stated his fairly hard to say name and slapped his hand against his chest. With that he pointed back at the boy infront of him "Slee." He nodded once, before going off on a toddler ramble of repeating things again "SleeSleesleeeee."
Arafel had paused to take a moment to tuck in the tired toddler, carefully putting his favorite blanket over him. As soon as the fabric touched him he seemed to "knonk out." Smiling a bit she turned back to the scene infront of her, raising a brow at her own child "Futoeki, I don't think he's sleepy..." She only earned a confused look. Shaking her head a bit she turned to look up at the other parent "Oh, Hi.. No worries, Futoeki and Iteru are loud as well." She almost laughed, fairly was an understatement... "I'm Arafel, and... This is Futoeki and Iteru." She gestured.
Futoeki lost his attention to the boy infront of him as he heard someone else enter, tail wagging excitedly. And then another girl was walking over. he almost looked overjoyed at the sight of all the people, much opposed to Arafel's reaction, looking much like a puppy as he struggled against the stroller's seatbelt. "Nnnn... Go!" he whined at the belt, commanding it to free him. Akivara Kita stayed in that position for a moment, then risked a peek. She saw Razito walking quickly by, and he cast an annoyed glance inside; Kita shrank back, waiting a moment or two longer before peeking out again. Razito was gone. Kita sighed with relief; Razito wasn't very happy right now and she didn't want to face him. She got to her feet and looked around, seeing who else was here, and wondered what she could do until Razito came back on the other side of the street. Prolixity "I Merlyn." The kitten blinked at Futoeki, and repeated, "Slee? What that?" He paused, thought about the sentence, and corrected himself. "What is that?" The girl who felt weird was coming over towards them. One ear swiveled, and he peeked out of the corner of his eye at her. "I'm Prolixity." Prox sat down in a nearby chair, keeping a sharp eye on his young son and the other children. "Nice to meet you. They're adorable." He nodded towards the toddlers in the stroller. Someone scuttled in the door, and Prox tensed slightly. The way the girl moved set off reflexes developed in other times, on other worlds. Was she being pursued? Why had she come to a clinic to hide, if that was the case? He resolved to stay alert, just in case. Junyi Luna blinked, head tilting at the adults and the two toddlers that hadn't yet caught her full interest. She then turned to Merlyn, head tilting even further as she studied him. Yup. Definitely had the right ears for that. With that decided, she smiled brightly, leaned forward, and gave his cheek her most polite lick. There! She did it right, right? whee Ruveila Hokuten Novena looked around briefly before sliding her hooded cloak off and the silvery garment hit the floor silently. Her raven hair fell down and stopped just above her ribcage. Her skin was pale milky white and her eyes an intense ruby red. She gazed around briefly and looked over at the group of children and parents, sipping a red liquid from a small cup with a clear straw.
Anyone that had the sense to tell such things, could identify the liquid as blood and a few other non Gaian herbs mixed in it. Her body smelt of layers of sunscreen and rose blossoms. She looked for all the world to be albino if not for the hair on her head and eyebrows. She was definately not of this world. She slinked along the dark portions of the wall, almost as if the sun scared her as she neared the other children, looking quite lonely but yet curious. her long elf like ears twitched slightly as she picked up sounds. Arafel Arafel tensed as more people seemed to flood into the clinic. Her shoulders seemed to hunch as she'd occassionally glance here and there to keep check on them, as if she felt they might jump her at any moment. And who could blame her... "It's nice to meet yo..." she froze as a scent hit her more cannine-like-nose, blood? Her tail rose a bit, quickly looking over her own children, then around the center for the source of the smell. Her eyes locked on the liquid a woman was holding, leting out a sigh of releif. No danger...
Futoeki continued to struggle against the belt "Go!" he commanded again. Ignoring the question for the moment.
The struggles caught the mother's attention as she tried to relax herself, leaning foreward to undo the strap and carefully move him to the floor.
Futoeki grinned as he was freed, then returned to his 'conversation' "Boodah slee." he pointed to his sleeping sibling. He froze as the girl licked the boy infront of him, then bursting into a fit of giggles. "Keeee!" he exclaimed to the sight of the kee, or kiss, he carefully situated his feet under him to pounce forth upon the kitten-boy. "Kee!" he exclaimed again, giving a much more sloppy and wet version of what luna had just done, tail wagging rapidly. Prolixity Prox watched the pale girl sliding along the wall cautiously, his nose also picking up the scent of blood. Vampire, perhaps? She wasn't acting like a predator, though, and he cautiously mentally marked her as not threatening. He turned his attention back to the children, and realized belatedly that Arafel had said something. "Ah, excuse me?" he asked, one ear going back in embarrassment. He blinked at Luna. What - ? Merlyn's ears flicked. This girl said hi like cats did! He arranged his ears and tail for a proper hello and stretched up to lick her cheek in return, and then licked Futoeki's cheek as well, just as pleased to be properly greeted by everyone. New friends! Junyi Luna squealed, eyes instinctively squeezing shut as Merlyn licked her cheek. The squeal quickly gave way to a giggle, which, in turn, gave way to squeals of laughter. Tickle! was the only word she managed to project as she leaned toward Futoeki and repeated the process with him, as well. There! Now they were ALL friends! Akivara Kita stopped herself from laughing as she watched the group lick each other, and shook her head. As dog-like as she might be, she'd never think of licking anyone. She thought it was kinda gross. As Kita caught the scent of blood, she gulped and raised her hands to her head, holding it, while dropping into the chair behind her. The glow of her eyes grew brighter as she struggled against something unexpected rising in her mind, something violent. The inner hell-hound growled at this resistance, it wanted to kill and to eat! Kita's eyes snapped wide open as she realized what her instincts were telling her to do, and gulped with fear. She didn't want to hurt anyone, but all she could do was fight while the smell of blood was in her nose. A sudden idea coursed through Kita's brain, and one of her hands left her head to plug her nose. Though she could smell, all she could smell was her own hand. With the blood smell gone, the inner hell-hound diminished, and she sighed in relief, though still didn't take her hand off her nose. She looked around embarassedly, ready with an excuse for anyone who'd noticed her acting strangely. Ruveila Hokuten Novena grew close to the children and put her cup away. She then knelt down with them and realized they were almost all bigger than she was. A pale hand gentle readjusted her robes and as she spoke, her voice was an elegnet and soft toned one, alamost like the whisper of wind on a cool day. " Why.. you lick.. faces?" She asked, her eyes squinting slightly at the adults, almost liek she had trouble seeing them. She shifted her position and a tiny hint of wings on her back emeged, looking identical to a bat. She then tugged gently on her large and long white ears. " I called.. Novena..." Arafel Arafel blinked, having forgotten her mannors and flushing some. "Oh i was just saying it was nice to meet you..." She gave an awkward smile. Jumping a bit as Futoeki lurched foreward. "Futoeki don...!" She trailed off as the child returned the animal-greeting. She smiled some, releived that her pup's strange ways hadn't gotten him rejected. She let out a soft laugh at the sight of a pile of children all exhanging licking greetings.
Futoeki's tail seemed to wag even more. "Yaaaa!" he cheered, throwing his arms in the air only to lose his balance and fall to the ground giggling. Yay for friends!
Arafel's own tail wagged some behind her... It reminded her of the way her and her brother would play and greet eachother when they were just pups... Those actions had been rejected by others though, thank goodness times were changing. She froze once more as the sudden feeling of danger struck her senses, she shook her head... hoping that feeling would pass. You're just being paranoid... she scolded herself, uncontiously reaching a hand into the stroller to place it on her other child, the boy giving a shift and grasping hold of her hand.
Futoeki looked up as another potential friend reached them, "Fuuutooowwkeee." he pointed to himself, struggling out the difficult vowels again. Tsh, why was everyone making him say it? Prolixity Something? Something scary! Merlyn's ears flattened abruptly against his head. With a swirl and puff of warm air, he changed shape and went leaping into his father's lap in kitten form, tail puffed. "Scary, Daddy!" "Ah, I'm sorry, I didn't he - Merlyn? What's wrong?" Prox's other ear went back as he cradled Merlyn, glancing around the room with a frown. "Scary thing," the kitten said. "Mad thing." He couldn't explain the burst of anger and fear, but it had frightened him. He peered at the other children to see if it had scared them too. They'd heard it, right? Junyi Luna heard it loud and clear. Her head jerked abruptly upward and she whirled around, hair and skirts flying as she locked eyes with Jokeph, who looked ready to fight to the death for her, grab her and run, or both. The smile disappeared from her face. Jo will protect us, she projected reassuringly at the other children. Me too. I'll protect you.Akivara At the sudden outbursts, Kita looked around in confusion, still plugging her nose; she wasn't sure if the source of the smell of blood was gone. "Whud's goin' on? Why's eberybody scared?" she asked, sounding congested from her plugged nose. Ruveila Hokuten Novena took all the sudden fear around her as being because of her and the girl's lower lip trembled and she realized she had no one to run to to comfort her as the tears beagan their swift trek down her pale face. She managed to choke out a few words before going silent. " I sorry.. no mean.. to scare... going 'way now.." She managed to get out inbetween silent sobs, wrapping her arms around her knees and burying her face in her silver robe covered knees. Arafel Arafel jumped slightly at the sudden movement infront of her, feeling her heartbeat jump as something had just moved fast past her pup... But it was only Merlyn.... She blinked, looking a tad befuddled at the kitten-once-child. He felt it too? So it wasn't just her being paranoid then?
Futoeki looked confused at the two as they went serious suddenlly, looking even more confused as the girl's voice was in his head. He wrote that one off though... Personally, he had been too busy playing to have noticed the abrupt change in the room. But now he was staring at the other children confused and concerned. If they were scared, he should be too right? Common toddler logic afterall...
Arafel jumped in at that moment, smiling brightly as she often did when she felt awkward. "Shh..." she muttered to the group of children, hoping the parents didn't mind her butting in... "It's gone now, right? So it's okay..." She nodded, leaning her free hand foreward to rub Futoeki's dog-ear.
Futoeki grinned, loosing all signs of going into crying-save-me-from-the-bad-thing-I-don't-know-about mode as he was petted. "Uuuhn!" Futoeki whined as the new friend was going to leave, quickly acting by crawling after her and giving her a wet slobbery friendship lick.
Arafel paused to look back over her shoulder to the clogged voice, tilting her head to the side as she noticed the woman holding her nose plugged. Still, she had little to speak of since her own behaviors were far from normal. "I'm not sure." She admitted, "Just.. a bad feeling.." she turned back to the toddlers, curiously wondering why they had noticed it too and what exactly it had been. Prolixity Merlyn's ears came back up slowly, and he peered back over the protective circle of his father's arms. "Pro-tect?" he inquired, and lifted his head. The thoght and the accompanying feelings were comforting. There was a girl crying! That was bad. It was bad when anyone cried. He wriggled loose and jumped down, sneaking over to bump his head against the crying girl's hand. Blue liked that, so maybe she would too. Prox slid down to kneel on the floor and pat the girl's shoulder gently. "It'll be okay, kiddo," he said awkwardly. Where was her parent, anyway? Junyi Luna bit her lip, gaze flicking from Arafel to Prox, and back again. She finally turned her attention back to Arafel and tapped her temple as if to say "I hear it in my head." With that, she idly began to brush the dust off of her dress, cautiously opening her mind again. Akivara Kita still hadn't made the connection between her reaction to the smell of blood and the sudden burst of fear in the room; at home, she was used to that sort of thing being private. "So everybody's okay?" She risked letting her fingers off her nose, though kept her hand on it just in case, and sniffed. If the scent was still there, it was masked by fear, air conditioning, and other, stronger, smells. Ruveila Hokuten Novena felt the lick on her face and lifted her head to regard the licker and looked into Futoeki's eyes and then felt the nudge against her hand and petted the kitten form Merlyn beside her. She then looked up to the adult speaking to her. She sucked up her tears as best as she could and managed a small smile.
" Thank much.. not use to friend.. or nice people.." She spoke and then, assuming the licking was some sort of acceptance into the children's little group, she leaned over and licked Futoeki's cheek and then the side of the kitten's face. She felt hair on her tongue but just swallowed it. She tended to accidently injest her own hair all the time and it did not bother her. She then regarded Prox and bowed her head respectfully, though a smile was firmly planted on the girl's face now. Arafel Arafel looked at the girl curiously, her head? It took her a few seconds but realization struck her and it showed in her expression. She nodded a bit... The girl saw or heard something... She smiled to Luna, trying to be reassuring. Arafel was around children often, special children... but children none the less, and she never was one to underestimate them. So she made a mental note to watch Luna in paticular... as well as merlyn perhaps, since they both seemed to know something.
She turned back to Kita, nodding some "Yea, I think we're all fine now." She paused to look over the children. Meryln seemed to be over whatever had happend, now concerned about the girl that had felt rejected. Futoeki and Prox had done the same, thus Arafel hadn't felt a need to help in the matter. Luna seemed to be getting more comfortable as well.
Futoeki grinned as more people joined him and the lonley girl, as he had so dubbed Novena. He clapped his hands as there was a lick returned, yay now there were four friends! Life sure was good. And for the moment, Arafel's initial plan of distracting him from his missing father was working splendidly. Futoeki wiggled with happiness, feeling the urge to play-wrestle as he often did swelling up inside him until he just cound't resist it. He promptly fell to his back, grabbing hold of the nearest object, which happend to be prox's pantleg, to chew on it harmlessly with light growling noises.
Arafel blinked at the scene "Futoeki!" she scolded, hoping he wasn't actualy biting the poor adult as she edged herself over to save the poor pants. Prolixity "Yeah, I think we're all okay." Relieved, Prox moved to go back to his seat, only to be halted by the sudden attachment on his leg. He blinked down at Futoeki and chuckled. "Little hunter, aren't you?" He tugged his leg gently away, smiling. That was better. Nobody was being loud and scary anymore, and his new friend was playing. Merlyn-kitten pounced up onto the nearest chair, then flung himself back down towards Futoeki. "DEAT' FROM ABOVE!" Junyi Boys. Luna simply climbed into the chair next to Arafel, peering up at her with wide brown eyes. Why are you going to keep an eye on me? Was I bad?Ruveila Hokuten Novena watched Merlyn just with some accute interest. She then remebred something she loved to play with and she had it with her. She reached into the small pants under the robe and pulled out a big bouncy ball, as big as her hand almost and lobbed it at the wall. She squalled with glee as it bounced off and came back to her. She repeated the same motion and watched it sail wide and to her right. Arafel Arafel chuckled at the sight of the children playfighting... Indeed, boys. Not that she couldn't say she had acted the same way when she was younger... She froze for what seemed to be the bajillionth time that day, looking back at the girl. She bit her lip, mind reading perhaps? Arafel decided to test it simply answering in a clearer than normal thought. No, not at all... I was just curious as to what you heard and I felt is all. she explained, suddenlly feeling very awkward around the child as she tried to make sure her thoughts didn't run off on something she didn't want shared.
Futoeki rolled, tail thudding against the floor of the center as he lost his prey. Drat. He let out a loud squeal as Meryln dive bombed him, promptly pounced and quicly returning the playful actions of rolling about in a classic tussle.
Prolixity Prox took his seat again, relaxing back now that the crisis was over. "No claws, kitten," he admonished. Merlyn tussled with Futoeki enthusiastically, clinging to the other toddler's clothes. That wasn't using claws, right? He bristled playfully and yowled at the other child. "Get you!" Junyi Luna smiled faintly at Arafel, smoothing her dress. Something bad, She explained. Dangerous. She giggled faintly as she sensed Arafel's awkwardness. If you think about something you don't want to think about, you'll think about it. You know? She tilted her head to the side. I can't hear what you don't talk about. Promise. With a final smoothing of her dress, she smiled brightly. My name is Luna Edae.Ruveila Hokuten Novena trailed after the ball and caught it. She then walked back over and slammed itintot he wall again, looking freaked when it headed right for Merlyn's head. " Um.. Fire in teh hole!" She ylled as her aunt Malice had a habit of saying. Arafel Futoeki giggled, grabbing and hugging at his new 'foe' Rolling about with tiny yips and nips that would never actually touch Merlyn. "Nuh!" He grinned, continueing to struggle back and forth to gain the winning position of having the other pinned.
Arafel nodded a bit, rather impressed with the child's talent. Alright. I'm Arafel. I don't have a last name. She explained the missing peice of her name, smiling a bit and looking to the tussling toddlers once more. She gave a tiny shake of her head, noting the occassional fidget and whine from Iteru... All this commotion was starting to disturb his nap. Her eyes moved towards the clock on the wall.... Hm. It was nearly time for Futoeki's as well.
Nodding to herself she stood, turning to the Luna "It was a pleasure to meet you, you're very sweet." Arafel gave her a smile and a pat on the head as she often did when she found something cute and likeable. "But I think we'll have to be going..." She then turned to Prox and Futoeki's new playmate. "It was nice meeting you too..." Though something in her mind reminded her she had seen prox somewhere before. "Come on pup..."
Futoeki looked to his mother just as he was about to gain control, quickly getting pinned as he was distracted. "Nnn..." he whined, not wanting to leave, and allready slightly fussy from being close to his nap.
Arafel knelt down, holding her arms out to call him over.
Futoeki nodded, pushing himself to his feet, wobbling and falling after a step then crawling the rest of the way... Much easier. Arafel scouped him up, already he was starting to get that glazed sleepy look. With that she carefully tucked him into his part of the twin-stroller, moving it back towards the door with a wave towards everyone, somewhat releived to get away from the crowd... Even if they were all nice and good people she couldn't help but feel nervous around them.
Prolixity "Nice to meet you." Prox nodded to Arafel and her children as she left. Nice woman, cute kids. A flash of motion caught his eye, and he reached out automatically to catch the speeding ball. "Careful!" Merlyn pouted. His playmate was going away. ... And Daddy had caught the ball! He shapechanged again and held his hands out. "Mine!" The girl had bounced it towards him, after all. Junyi Luna yawned quietly behind one hand, watching the others play. Before she had the chance to project any feelings of tiredness, she was already being swept up by Jokeph, who kept his eyes firmly fixated on the door as he carried her out. He was NOT happy. Luna did have the chance to wave at Merlyn, though. I'll play with you later--With that, she was gone. Ruveila Hokuten Novena decided to let Merlyn have the ball, after all, she could get another one easy. She yawned softly herself and rubbed at her ruby eyes as the pendant around her neck began to glow. " Mama is coming.." Prolixity "OKAY!" Merlyn yelled after Luna. She was nice! He liked her. "Indoor voice." Prox handed the ball to Merlyn. "Here, go give it back, kidlet. It belongs to her." He smiled at the girl. Had they caught her name? A little sulkily, Merlyn pushed himself to his feet and went to give the ball back. A nurse came out of the back hall. "Merlyn Sarihe," she read off the clipboard in her hand. "That's us." Prox stood and scooped Merlyn up. "I don't wanna - " "No shots today." The catboy carried the toddler back towards the examination rooms.

Guild RPProlixity's journal We ran into Luna again in the park today. Fortunately, the encounter went better than last time; they played and conversed for some time before we had to leave. There was only a minor ripple at the end. I'm not sure what happened, but Merlyn ended up with a pulled tail, for which he insisted upon a band-aid. Thankfully, he doesn't seem to hold it against Luna. He has mentioned her a few times since we got home. Their conversation seemed to be not entirely verbal. Perhaps I should get him tested for psychic ability ... ?

"Daddy, wake up! Daddy!"
Prox mumbled into his pillow and peered reluctantly out from the warmth of the covers and Shai's wing. "What's up, kiddo?" he said sleepily.
"I can't put my shirt on. It's too little," Merlyn pouted.
Prox opened the other eye, his brain registering that his son had, indeed, had one of those odd, overnight growth spurts. He groaned and hauled himself out of bed, pulling his bathrobe on. "Let's go get down the clothes box."
"YAY!" Merlyn darted away down the hall towards the storage closet. "I WANT THE FISHY SHIRT!"
"Hush, everyone's still sleeping." Prox followed at a more sedate pace. "You can have the fishy shirt, but you need to be quiet."

Prolixity's journal The kidlet has grown again. It's a good thing that I had the foresight to stash away a few sets of clothing in a larger size for this probability. A few of Anen and Kher's old things should fit him decently now. I fear what Merl and Blue will get up to, now that they are about the same size. The terrible twosome, or somesuch. When Reverie grows, I think I will have to fear for the whole house's structural integrity. I think I'll take Friskit up on her offer to take the littles out for a day at the zoo sometime. I'd say she has no idea, but she does have Samael, and, well, she's Friskit, so I think she's well enough equipped for it. Time to start being serious about the reading and writing. Merl doesn't like to sit still for the lessons, but I won't have him illiterate.

Fallout
Merlyn crouched on the floor beside Blue's bed and tugged at the blanket-covered lump that was his brother. "Blue? Blue, wake up," he whispered.
The Tall Tale turned over. "I'm sleeping," he said.
"Blue, I had a bad dream."
"Go get Dad, then, maybe it's a wilder. Teratus can make it go away. Or the new one."
"Nuh uh. I don't wanna. Dad's having blood dreams too and he's so sad it hurts and Shai's all full of worried and I don't wanna go in there."
Blue peered at his brother for a moment, then scooted over, leaving space in the bed so that Merlyn could climb in. The kitten did so, cuddling his little rubber dragon tightly against his side for comfort.
"What happened?" Blue whispered.
"When the new one came, Dad was suddenly all full of so much sad he couldn't hold it all, and it hurts. I don't like the new one." Merlyn huddled under the covers, ears flattened.
Blue curled against his brother's side. "How can you tell?"
"I can hear it." Merlyn blinked at Blue, confused. "Can't you?"
The Tale shook his head. "You can't see my ghosts, though," he pointed out, reasonably enough.
Merlyn nodded and put his head down on the pillow, silent.
"If you kick me I'm gonna kick back," Blue warned, and pulled the covers up to go back to sleep.

It was something Luna would have to look into making a habit after work. Home was noisy. Outside was noisy. But the clinic? Now that was nice and quiet. It was a little more uncomfortable sitting upside-down in the clinic's chairs now that she was nearly grown, but that didn't deter her. Who cared if she was covered in dirt? She knew where the mop was. She could clean up after herself. Her dirty work gloves and canvas apron occupied the seat next to her, and she'd removed her muddy boots when she entered the clinic. Her socked feet probably smelled a hell of a lot worse than the boots, but at least she wasn't tracking mud. And as she relaxed, eyes closed, her hands folded over her chest, she projected one thing: the feeling of complete relaxation that could be taken as an "Mmmmmmm~" A grey blur burst into the waiting room. Merlyn darted across the room to the receptionist's desk, delighting in his newly gained height and balance, and tried to haul himself up to the counter to look over it. "I'm HERE," he said to the receptionist. The young man behind the counter, who could see only a pair of small furred hands, said kindly, "I can see that." Prolixity followed his son into the clinic more sedately, heading for the counter to check in. He nodded to Luna on his way in. A tall, blue-skinned male followed him, eyes darting everywhere. Merlyn ceased his attempts on the fortress of solitude that was the desk, and spun around to see what else interesting might be in the room. "Luna!" he said delightedly. He grabbed the blue person's webbed hand and dragged him over. "Luna, look, I brought Lapis!" Luna's eyes slowly fluttered open, and she found herself staring at the upside-down image of Merlyn. Mmm?Pause. Oh!She didn't yet right herself, but she still smiled warmly at Merlyn. Lapis?Merlyn grinned back, ears perked happily. He radiated cheerful pleasure at having found his older friend here. "Lapis is a comet serpent, except he went to Khia's and went in the lab, so now he has legs and feet, and he keeps tripping over them, and he doesn't like it yet but he's got hands so he likes it a little bit," he explained, rather garbledly. He was like this, he clarified mentally. Lapis fidgeted uncomfortably. He certainly didn't look a great deal like Merlyn's mental projection at the moment, save for the blue skin, the flexible spines drooping from his back, and the thick black mane of hair. However, he was very readably possessive and protective of his charge, and even this new weirdness wasn't going to keep him from following and looking after the boy. Luna glanced from Merlyn to Lapis and back, a slow smile spreading across her face. She understood THOSE projections. He sounded a lot like someone ELSE she knew. Didn't he, Jo~? wink If Jokeph could speak, he probably would have replied with a "Hmph." So how WAS Merlyn, anyway? Luna finally righted herself, rubbing at her dirty cheek with one hand. He looked like he had grown quite a bit since she last saw him! And at this rate, he'd be bigger than she was! Lapis subsided into a chair, trying to coil his legs under him uncomfortably. He watched Luna closely. "I'm good! I'm big, I can reach the counter now," Merlyn told Luna proudly. "I can get my own cookies without a chair, and I have a fish shirt." He tugged at the shirt he was wearing, clearly very proud of it. I picked it myself but I was too little for it and then I got bigger.Oh, did you? Luna reached out to poke the fish on Merlyn's shirt. It's a very nice fish shirt! Does the fish on your shirt have a name?Merlyn blinked. He had never considered that. "Nuh uh. Help me make one up?" Hm. Well, naming a shirt-fish was a big deal! Luna pursed her lips in thought, considering the fish on his shirt. Morty?Uh uh, that's a cat name. Merlyn pondered the problem with great seriousness. "Bubbles is silly," he mused aloud. Is silly a good thing? Luna wondered. Mister Bubblesworth!Merl burst into giggles. "Mister Bubblesworth!" He poked the fish on his shirt and declared solemnly, "Mister Bubblesworth likes it." Prox returned to the seating area just in time to catch this declaration. He raised one eyebrow, decided not to ask, and sat down to peruse one of the outdated magazines from the table. Mister Bubblesworth. Luna repeated proudly, nodding her head for emphasis. So, what did Merlyn and Mister Bubblesworth do today? Did they have fun?We went to the grocery and to the beach to see my brother and then I played in the garden and now we came for my check-up," Merlyn recounted. "Daddy says I have to take some tests." He plonked down to sit on the floor, tugging his little rubber dragon out of his pocket and fidgeting with it. But they won't hurt, he added. It sounds like you had a lot of fun! Luna grinned at Merlyn. And I'm glad you're taking tests that won't hurt. It's never fun to take the kind that hurt. A sympathetic nod. Just to see how loud I can talk and how soft I can hear with my head, Merlyn offered. "Without being out loud." He tossed the dragon toy to Lapis, who obligingly caught it and threw it back. Oooh, I had that one, but not here. Luna tilted her head. Those are easy tests. At least, I thought they were."Shai can do it too but he can't do the tests, so I'm gonna do them here," Merlyn explained. Catch! He tossed the toy to Luna. Luna's hands automatically reached up to catch the toy, peering at it intently and giving it an appreciative squeeze. It's cute! Where did you get it?"There are lots at the shop with the dragons," Merlyn nodded. "That one's mine." He held his hands out to catch the dragon. Hnn! Luna would have to look into getting one of her own. Unwilling to throw the dragon, she leaned forward and gently set it in Merlyn's paws. Aw, you were s'posed to throw it. Merlyn looked vaguely disappointed and stuffed the dragon back into his pocket. "You're all full of dirty," he observed. "What did you do?" Didn't want to hurt it. If Luna were speaking, she would've been mumbling. I came here straight from work, she explained. Jo and I make the soil more nutritious for the plants at the Sprouts Nursery."S'just rubber. When I was really little I bit it all the time," Merlyn offered, ignoring the fact that it hadn't been all that long ago that he'd been really little. How do you do that? he inquired, curious. We-ell... Luna brought a finger to her lips, thinking of how to explain it to him in a way he'd understand. She settled for projecting the memories she had of the soil being too alkaline; too bitter for the plants. And the only thing that would make them better was acid. Dirt that was less bitter by adding sour. And Jokeph was very acid. A loogie into the dirt, mix it up, and then Jokeph and Luna would tend to the plant itself. Jokeph was always good with plants, having the soul of one himself, and Luna was good with Earth, having that as her element. Together, they were an unstoppable force! Merlyn absorbed the information interestedly. It was fascinating. Why does adding sour make it less bitter? he inquired. The concept had come across slightly muddled from the comparison. And how come Jokeph is sour?Science lesson time. Well, bases were bitter, and acids were sour. Lemons had acid in them, and that's why someone could taste them and go ihhhhhhhhhh! Luna made a face to demonstrate. And baking soda was bitter, and that's why someone could taste it and go ewwwwww! Another face. And when you put them together, you get a really nasty reaction of lots of fizz and mess. And salt. But they also cancelled each other out, you see? Of course, when there was soil involved, there wasn't very much in the fizz and mess department, but there was still cancelling out going on. "I like lemons," Merlyn remarked absently, and thought about the science lesson. Was vinegar an acid, then? It was sour, and it made a huge bubbling mess with baking soda. And the resultant liquid hadn't tasted like much of anything at all. "Why does it make salt?" And is it bad for plants to have too much of the other way?Yup, vinegar WAS an acid! And as for the salt-making, now that was a complex process that involved ions and things that even Luna didn't understand. And it was definitely bad for plants to have too much acid. Luckily, Jokeph's acid could be refined to make antidotes, and that helped. How did Jokeph make acid? Most people didn't make acid, Merlyn was pretty sure of that. Was it on purpose? Luna didn't know. It was just how Jokeph was. That's why nobody is to touch him. Ever. Except Luna, who was immune, but Jokeph didn't really LIKE to be touched, so she respected that, usually. Unless she just really needed a hug. "That wouldn't be fun," Merlyn said, frowning faintly. How did he do things if he couldn't touch people? What happened if he bumped into someone? And hugs were good, it wouldn't be good to not have them. Jokeph wears clothes, Luna noted. He can bump into people, but he doesn't like the feeling at all. And he can do things just fine without touching anyone. She smiled sweetly at Merlyn. Did he want a hug? Maybe sit in her lap? Even if she WAS dirty? Merlyn didn't mind dirt! He liked hugs, too. He scrambled up to climb onto Luna's lap, ears perked. It was just about that time when a tiny naked man, no more than an inch in height, ran through a gap in the door, tiny limbs flailing and his but beautiful hair flapping in the breeze. (And other tiny parts of his anatomy either flailing or flapping in the breeze, but if I, the narrator, were to describe them all, it would take all night) "SCREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE," he screeched as he ran through the clinic and exited out the back. A blue, birdlike creature flew after him, flapping as hard as she could just to keep up, shrieking in harmony. "STREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAK!" And as quickly as they appeared, they, and their antics, were gone. Almost as if someone were quadruple dog dared to streak through the clinic. Or send them streaking through the clinic. ............"Bzuh," Luna declared, watching them go before wrapping her arms around Merlyn and resting her chin on top of his head with a gentle lick. She... was just going to ignore that. Lapis stared. Prox, all too familiar with the pair of small beings in question, put his magazine down and put his face in his hands. He might have been laughing. It was hard to tell. Merlyn blinked and twisted to look. What had that been? Luna didn't know. Luna really didn't want to know. sweatdrop Merlyn pointed after them. Hadn't that been a Dream? Hey... wait! Yeah! Luna recognized it! Jokeph has one who helps translate his sign language! That means it was Daddy's fault. Merlyn turned to stare accusingly at his father. The older feline had just managed to compose himself. The stare set him off again, and he laughed silently into his hands. ...What was so funny, Luna wondered? "Chee," the elder feline said, as though that explained everything. Merlyn was confused. He stuck his tongue out at his parent and turned back to Luna. Well. He had gotten a hug from his friend, so all was well, even if there were crazy things around. Crazy things were kind of normal, anyway. "Chee," Luna repeated, wrinkling her nose. Sounded like a food. At least the distraction was good for interrupted scary things. Like learning! Luna winked at Merlyn. Any more, and it would've been like going to school, hmm? School. Merlyn wrinkled his nose and expressed distaste at sitting still and reading things. He liked DOING things, but not TESTS and WRITING. When they went to the beach and learned how the ocean made waves because of the moon and the way the shape of the beach was, that was fun, though! Luna always learned better that way, too, she admitted. That's why she chose not to go back to the Academy back on Neilan. She wanted to learn things her own way. I have to go and take tests when I get bigger, though. Merlyn made a face. "So Daddy said I have to learn how, so I can." Tests aren't so tough. Luna winked again. You just have to learn how to make good guesses and narrow down the choices. You'll get the hang of it in no time."I'm smart," Merlyn asserted. "I'll do good." Right! Another lick. Now, don't you have other tests you need to be doing right now? Elle wanted to sneak into the GMFC. She was very good at it now, she doubted anyone would notice! But she had to fight that. She had to walk in, and sit, look normal, all while pretending she wasn't a jittery fluttery teenager. She saw Luna was in there before she'd entered, and for a few moments Elle froze. Then she forced herself to keep moving, step by step, right on into the GMFC. Just act normal. Calm... normal... "Hi." Elle told them both. Merlyn groaned and slid obediently off Luna's lap, ears flattening. "Don't wanna," he said. ... Oooh, a new person! "Hi!" Oh, it'll be fi-- Luna's thoughts trailed off as she glanced up at Elle. She quickly recovered, however. Ah! Merlyn, this is my very good friend, Elle! Elle, this is my very good friend, Merlyn. Merlyn, Elle. Elle, Merlyn."Hi!" Elle told Merlyn, eyes only glancing up to catch Luna's eyes for a few seconds. She grinned shyly at her for a moment, unable to speak, then redirected her gaze back to the kid. "It's nice to meet you, Merlyn. Are you also a prisonor of the clinic, merciless to wait for tests like we all are?" She said that all very seriously, but Elle was grinning too. Something had definatly softened. "Uh huh, I have to go see how well I talk with my head," Merlyn nodded. He bowed to Elle, as he had been taught was polite, and said "It's-nice-to-meet-you!" Then he glanced back to catch his father's eye for approval. A nurse emerged from the back hallway. "Merlyn Sarihe?" "I gotta go, maybe we can talk sometime," Merlyn said to Elle, mostly managing not to pout. He hugged Luna one more time, then dragged over towards the nurse. Lapis got up and followed his young charge, eyeing Elle suspiciously. Prox smiled to the young woman - she looked familiar; was she the daughter of someone he knew? he'd find out later, perhaps - and padded after his son.

Last week, Merlyn had grown. Blue was not so sure he liked this new development. "Hey," the Tale said, and poked at Merlyn's shoulder uncertainly. "That's my shirt."
"I'm big enough for it now," Merlyn said, as though that settled everything.
"But it's my shirt," Blue protested.
"Not any more," Merlyn declared, and went back to his game.
"Fine, then I'm taking your fish shirt."
"Nuh uh! That's mine!" Merlyn twisted around to pout at Blue. Unattended, the character on the screen fell into a pit; the resultant telltale sound effect increased the young feline's pout.
"It's mine now, unless you give my shirt back," Blue insisted.
"Fine." Merlyn set the controller down, hauled the shirt off, and flung it at his brother. "You can't have my fish shirt."
"Okay," Blue said cheerfully, and escaped with his property.

Merlyn fidgeted impatiently, swinging his legs off the side of the branch. He wasn't sure what it was that Anen wanted to talk to him about. It was vaguely possible that it was some kind of present. He could hope, anyway, right? He had come out to the garden, bored with tagging after his big brother; Anen was terminally slow, and he was probably going to be talking to Blue and Papa and Reverie a while yet.
Merl turned to rest his back against the tree trunk and braced his foot against the branch he was on. Part of the good part about being a kid was that climbing trees and reaching things was so much easier, even if it did mean that now he had to do chores with Blue and take lessons for longer every day. What was it like to be a grown-up, like Dad and Papa and Anen? There were a couple of pictures on the mantel of Anen when he was a kid, which was just plain weird. As far as Merlyn was concerned, Anen had always been a grown-up. Except, of course, that he hadn't always been, because everyone started as a baby, or at least a kid.
That was a thought. Reverie had started as a baby, Merlyn had seen that with his own eyes. And Blue ... he wasn't real sure, because Blue had been there before his memories started being clear, but he thought Blue hadn't been a baby when he came to live with them. What was the difference? And Dad had told him, not too long ago, that Anen and his girlfriend Naia had had a baby (which made him an uncle, which was really kind of cool, honestly). So how did babies get to their dads?
"You look like you're thinking hard," Anen said from below the tree.
Merlyn wrapped his hands around the next branch up and hauled himself up so that he could hook his elbows over it and dangle his footpaws in the air. "Where do babies come from?" he asked his brother.
Anen sputtered and turned red, which was interesting. "Ask Dad," he hedged.
"Cool! Will he turn red too?" Merlyn tilted his ears at Anen, curious.
"Oh, probably," Anen said dryly. He hauled himself up into the tree, somewhat more cautiously than Merlyn had. He had four hands to brace himself with, but he was also bigger and heavier.
"Where'd your wings go?" Merlyn inquired, and scrambled up onto the branch to sit.
"Seung has them," Anen said. The question had made him feel both happy and sad all at once, a strong, radiating sensation like a cold flame. A little like the Door-fire felt. That was confusing and interesting all at once. Merlyn wasn't quite sure how that worked, but Anen was saying something else now, and Merlyn had to drop the thought to pay attention to what his brother was talking about. "I think this was supposed to belong to you," Anen was telling him.
Curious, Merl leaned down to have a look at what Anen had. Was it going to be a present after all? "What is it?"
The Fa'e slipped a ring off his finger, a heavy silver thing with a blue stone. "I have my own threads to follow," he said, not answering the question. "I give up my claim on Dream, in favor of Merlyn kai-Jerek Sarihe, if he should be found worthy."
Merlyn blinked. It was like Anen wasn't talking to him at all; and maybe he wasn't, because Merlyn could see, clear as sunlight, the blue fire springing up in a nimbus around him as he spoke the words, swirling around him and whirling downwards into the stone of the ring in his palm.
It was as though, suddenly, something was looking at him, like the doctor had when they were giving him tests for his mind-talking. He was being examined, tested, observed. Merlyn held very still, eyes wide; there was a kind of snap, like something breaking, and when the sensation went away, the ring was in his hand instead of Anen's.
Merlyn shook his head, trying to clear it. Something felt funny, except that it didn't. It was like something had been sore, and suddenly stopped. That was the only thing that he could compare it to. He held up the ring, fascinated. It looked smaller than it had a moment ago. Actually, it looked like it would fit him. He tried it; it fit his finger perfectly, though that really shouldn't be possible, since just a minute ago it had been on Anen's finger, and Anen's fingers were much bigger. "Cool," Merlyn said, pleased.
Anen laughed, the faintly worried expression he had been wearing slipping off his face. "Ask Dad to tell you about that too, okay?" he said.
"Will it make him turn red?" Merlyn asked hopefully.
"Probably not," Anen chuckled, and climbed down out of the tree. "Come on, fuzzball, I want to see if the rock shrine is still in the woods."
"Cool," Merlyn repeated, and scrambled down to follow his brother.

The ninja stalked into the room on silent pawpads, skittering around the corner, darting from hiding spot to hiding spot. Silent and unseen! His target was on the couch, absorbed in a book. All the better to sneak up upon.
Lips twitching with the threat of a smile, Abishai kept his gaze solidly on the book in front of him. He paused only long enough to take a sip of coffee long since gone lukewarm, then set the cup aside -- and out of danger -- before returning to the book. Ninja? What ninja?
Closer and closer - target in range! The ninja remembered just in time that real ninjas don't emit terrifying battle cries, and made his pounce in total silence. Well, mostly.
Willingly, Abishai made a surprised squeak, then laughed and grabbed hold of Merlyn, tickling him playfully. "Pounce me, will you? I'll teach you to pounce, you little ninja," he declared, grinning like a loon.
Merlyn squealed and squirmed under the tickling. "No fair, ninjas aren't ticklish," he declared, trying to poke his papa in the ribs between flails.
"You're not a ninja yet, you're a ninja in training," Abishai countered with a giggle as he squirmed in return.
This was an interesting thought. Merlyn paused to contemplate it. "Can I have real ninja stars when I'm a real ninja?" he asked.
"We'll talk about it when you're older," Abishai decided as he drew Merlyn in for a snuggle.
"Ninja stars are cool." Merlyn settled down for a hug. "They're sharp on all sides, so no matter what part hits first it sticks."
Abishai chuckled and squeezed Merlyn gently. "So ninjas are better than pirates, huh?"
"Um." Merlyn sat up and thought about that. "You can't say if they're better or not, because they're diffrent," he decided, chewing on his lip in deep thought. "Like you can't say pizza is better than spaghetti because they're both cool and they're not the same."
"Oh, good, because I really like pirates," Abishai offered with a sparkle in his eyes. "I'm glad to know they're just as cool."
"You can't be a ninja and a pirate both," Merlyn pointed out. "Because ninjas can't swim."
Abishai smirked, tickling Merlyn's side. "Or maybe that's just what they want you to think, so you never know they're coming for you from another island!"
Merlyn shrieked gleefully and lashed his tail. "Nuh-uh, now you're making it up," he accused.
"Says who?" Abishai grinned and tickled Merlyn again, the bridge of his nose crinkling a little in amusement. "Ninjas can go everywhere!"
"Ninjas use boats," Merlyn said disdainfully, squirming off the couch so as to be out of range of tickling. "'Cause they don't swim."
Abishai smirked, leaning back and crossing his arms. "And if I brought you a ninja who could swim, what would you do?"
"Um." Merlyn sat on the rug and considered this dilemma. "Ask him how he learned to swim?" he offered uncertainly.
The demon grinned, deeply amused. "See, what would a ninja do if his boat got overturned in the middle of the ocean? A ninja has to know how to swim, so he won't drown!"
This was clearly superior logic, and Merlyn was quiet for a moment, considering it. Finally, he declared, "I gotta learn to swim," with the air of one who has come to A Conclusion.
Abishai nodded sagely, though his eyes were still twinkling. "I'd say that's a very good idea. But make sure it's me or your daddy who teaches you, okay?"
"Okay. Why?" Merlyn idly flexed his toeclaws into the weave of the carpet.
"Because that way we can make sure you're safe," Abishai explained. "While you may be a ninja in training, your daddy and I both still want to make sure you don't get hurt."
"Okay." That made sense. Merlyn flopped backwards on the carpet and stretched one foot up towards the ceiling, splaying his toes. "Vati was climbing my tree," he said suddenly.
Abishai considered that as he drew his glasses off. "Does this bother you?" he asked quietly.
"It was my tree first." Merlyn slid his toeclaws out, stared at them, resheathed them.
"That's not an answer, Merl."
Merlyn put his foot back on the floor and sat up again, chewing on a thumbclaw. "I dunno." He thought about it a moment longer, then added, "He's always mad, and I'm not trying to hear, I know I'm not supposed to, he's projecting."
Just beyond the doorway there was a soft, furious squeak; Abishai looked up and called, quite calmly, "Come away from there, Vati. Remember, I told you to not eavesdrop." Mayavati hesitated, then stomped out into the living room, angrily. "You little mindstealer!" he growled at Merlyn, chittering. "What do you think you're doing, listening to my thoughts?!" "He just told you you're projecting," Abishai said quickly, trying to calm the rising storm.
"I can't not hear you, you're really loud," Merlyn said indignantly, jumping to his feet. "I'm not trying!"
"I'm not being loud, you're listening in!" Vati shot back. Abishai rose, stepping between the pair, hands out to warn both of them off. "Merl, Vati, enough. Vati, yes, you're projecting, I can feel it too." As Vati opened his mouth to protest, Abishai shook his head. "No. Don't argue. You're projecting. I know you don't think you are, but it's not fair to Merl to yell at him for something he can't control."
The anger radiating off the squirrel child was making Merlyn's fur rise along his spine and don his tail. "I don't want to listen," he snapped. "I don't like being mad because you're mad!"
Somewhat taken aback, Vati blinked at Merlyn, then bristled and turned away, running off. "Vati, get back here," Abishai called, then sighed, sinking into the sofa with a groan when he was ignored.
There was a small swirl of warm wind, and Merlyn plopped down on the rug in kitten shape and began vigorously and angrily grooming his ruffled fur down. His tail beat a rapid pattern on the floor.
"I think he's jealous of you," Abishai murmured to Merlyn.
"Huh?" The small cat looked up, ears flipping up with surprise.
"You've been with your daddy since you were born, and I came into the picture not much later. Vati keeps getting abandoned by the people who are supposed to love him and take care of him. He thinks that's going to happen again here," Abishai explained softly.
Merlyn's ears drooped as he took that in. His tail curled tightly around his feet. "I wish he wasn't so mad," he said very quietly.
Abishai tilted his head slightly, curiously. "So he wouldn't project so badly?"
"Then he wouldn't be all spiky," Merlyn tried to explain. He changed shape again and wrapped his arms round his knees, hunting for the correct words to explain. "He pushes the anger at us, and it makes me mad, and then I say stuff, because I'm mad, and it makes him madder."
"Come here, kitten," Abishai murmured, opening his arms to Merlyn. "Maybe if you can just find a time to be around him when he's not mad? I've seen him not-mad when he's curled up in a tree..."
Merlyn uncurled himself and went to get a hug. "But then he gets mad 'cause I followed him," he said, and sighed. "You should go and give him a hug too, Papa," he added.
Abishai hugged Merlyn tightly, then tucked the kitten against his side as he stood. "Let's both go give him a hug."
Merlyn nodded and followed, mentally bracing himself to come back into contact with the swirl of snarling hurting anger that Vati carried with him.
When they found him, he was outside -- up a tree, as Abishai had predicted. "Come down," he called up to the squirrel, and received a chittering, angry, wordless response, but finally Vati slid down the tree, arms crossed as he glared at the pair. "What?" Vati muttered, then blinked and froze, eyes wide, as Abishai hugged him. What the hell was going on?!
It was hard to think through the haze of someone else's anger. Merlyn flexed his claws into the ground and concentrated on blocking it out. When the tenor of the projection shifted over into confusion, it was a little easier. "'M sorry," he said, and watched his feet. "I didn't mean to listen."
Vati refused to return the hug, but at least it calmed down the chaotic swirl of his mind a little. "...Yeah. Whatever. Just try to keep it to a minimum okay?" he muttered, glancing first at Merlyn, then away, awkwardly.
"I'm trying," Merlyn said, half-offended, half-plaintive.
"Okay." Vati pulled himself forcibly away from Abishai, still not sure how to respond to the gesture, then huddled back against the tree trunk. "Just not a good idea for anybody, really. ...I'm going inside." He turned away, heading for the door.
The muddy mix of emotions was too much for Merlyn, and he started up the tree, using the best method he knew so far for escaping someone else's feelings - putting distance between them.
Abishai watched the pair, then sighed, trudging inside as well. Life never was easy, was it?

"Dad?"
"What is it, Merlyn?" Prox looked up from the paperwork involved in the latest lot of trade jewelry. He never liked paperwork, but there was always paperwork involved in the trading process. The interruption would have been welcome - if it weren't for the fact that Merlyn had an all-too-familiar photo frame in his hand and the look on his face that meant he knew this wasn't going to make his father happy.
"Who's this in this picture with you?"
Prox took a breath, trying to ignore the frozen feeling in his chest, and composed his expression carefully. "That's your other biological father," he said, as neutrally as he could. "We separated when you were still a baby. He's dead." Silently, he added, and I'm glad, with a cold miserable twisting fury he was astonished to find himself still capable of feeling.
Merlyn stared at his father for a long moment, then looked back down at the photo in his hand. His whiskers came forward, then drew back flat against his cheeks. "I hate you," he said, loudly, and flung the picture against a wall. His running footsteps echoed down the hall, as did the slam of his bedroom door.
Prox buried his face in his hands, breathing through the fury and hurt that rushed alternately hot and cold in him. Why had he never found the right time to explain? What would he have said if he had tried?
When he looked up, Blue was staring at him from the doorway, silent as a whisper. The Tale met his parent's eyes, and padded silently into the room to stretch up and kiss the feline's cheek. Then he turned and padded on ghost-quiet paws down the hallway after his brother. Prox stared after his young sons, the high emotion draining out of him and leaving him feeling empty and exhausted inside.
He rose from his desk and went out the study door. He'd get nothing done, now, until he calmed.
--
Blue slipped into Merlyn's room and shut the door behind him again. He had heard the garden door close, understood that their father had gone into Dream to exorcise his own ghosts. Dad did that, sometimes. It wasn't bad. He just needed to stop seeing his ghosts before he could be okay again. Blue rather wished he could stop seeing ghosts as easily as that. "Hey, stupid," he said to the space under Merlyn's bed.
"Shut up," the space under the bed answered in a voice choked with tears.
Blue dropped flat on his belly and wriggled under the bed to curl up next to the ball of grey-tabby fur that was his brother, in cat form and coiled tightly in on himself. "I heard," Blue said.
"He never TOLD me," Merlyn muttered into his paws. "He felt all guilty and awful inside when I asked, it was like he was yelling in my head and it hurt. But he never told me."
"It's a ghost for him," Blue explained. "He's scared of it."
"What's he scared of?" Merlyn said rebelliously. "He shoulda told me I had another dad."
"I don't know," Blue said, thoughtful. "But I smelled the scared. I think."
Merlyn shifted, curled his tail tighter around himself. "Why'd my other dad leave? Didn't he want me?" he whispered, not meeting Blue's eyes.
"I dunno," Blue answered. "You're stupid but that's not enough to make anyone go away. I think."
"You're a big butt," Merlyn replied automatically, but he sounded comforted.
The proprieties of etiquette were satisfied. Blue didn't answer, but shifted until their sides touched and kept his brother quiet company.

Everything was so messed up. Why did it have to be like this? What had been so wrong with him that people had kept shoving him away? Tail curled tightly around his body, Mayavati huddled in the crook of a tree, perched right where the strong trunk split into two and went off at angles; there was a huge psychology textbook in his lap, almost heavier than the squirrel-child himself was, and he was pouring over it, trying to figure out what the adults knew about him that he didn't. Maybe this way he'd be able to find out why he was so unlikeable.
Merlyn slunk up to the foot of the tree, his ears at an uncertain angle, tail low. He had cheated a little to find Vati, opening his patchy mental shields long enough to catch the mental tenor of the squirrel-child's mind; if Vati knew, he'd be angry again, but he hadn't listened much. "Um," he said.
"...What." It wasn't even a question, it was more of a statement. Vati glanced down at Merlyn, his own ears back as he carefully refrained from chittering with agitation.
"'m sorry," Merlyn said, and crawled up into the branches, tucking himself into a crook of a branch nearby and winding his tail around his ankles.
An apology? Now that was odd. Vati eyed Merlyn suspiciously, his own tail curling more tightly around his body. "Sorry for what?" he asked cautiously.
"Not gettin' it." Merlyn rested his chin on his knees and watched his toes intently.
"Not getting what?" Vati prompted, irritably confused.
"People not. Not wanting to - " Merlyn stopped, flexed his claws into the bark. "I had another dad," he said.
Vati started to speak; stopped; chittered softly and nestled back against the tree a bit more. "...Tell me," he finally murmured.
"I dunno much," Merlyn said quietly, still watching his toes. "I found a picture. Of Dad with someone. And I asked, and he said - " He hunched his shoulders, stopped speaking, and curled his claws into the branch with more force.
"Said what?" Vati tugged his shawl down around him, hugged the corners to his chest.
"That it was my other dad. And he left when I was still a baby. And he's dead and I didn't know." Merlyn scratched furrows in the bark. "And, and. I thought. If he went away, didn't he like me? And. I mean. I. You - " He stuttered to a halt and flicked a miserable glance at Vati. "'m sorry. I just felt like I should say."
"...People're assholes," Vati muttered. "People that're supposed to love you, supposed to take care of you, they just stop loving you, if they ever did in the first place, and they go away. Everyone goes away." A pause. "...It's not your fault."
Merlyn chewed on his thumbclaw, frowning fiercely. "I don't. I wouldn't. If I were grown up. When I grow up if i have kids I won't ever go away from them. Not ever."
"Can you promise that?" came the quick question. "Can you promise you won't die or get hurt or go away anyway? You don't know what's coming. No one does."
"If I get hurt I'll get better, Dream will make me," Merlyn shot back, angrily. His ears flattened back against his head.
Vati blinked, attention instantly caught. "Dream?" he asked, curiously. "What's Dream?" Apparently no one had yet told him about the details of the world that was under the care of the Sarihe.
Derailed, Merlyn blinked at Vati. He flapped a hand at the wild tangle of forest at the foot of the garden. "'S down there. Except you shouldn't go too far in, because then you can get lost and not get back to Gaia, and Dad would have to come get you, or me, because I can talk to Dream too," he said, with a touch of pride.
"It's a forest?" Vati asked, ears perking forward as he inspected the forest from where he sat. "And it talks?"
"It's a world," Merlyn explained. "That's just the Forest, and it comes up in our garden because it's Dad's so we have to be near it even though we live in Gaia too."
"...Prolixity owns a world?" Now there was a mind-boggling thought.
Merlyn tilted his head and thought about that. "It kinda owns him," he said thoughtfully. He held his right hand out, displaying the heavy blue-jeweled ring on his forefinger. "See, this came from Dream, because when I grow up a long time from now Dream will take me too."
Vati inspected the ring, his ears flattening again. "'Take you'? What do you mean, 'take you'?" It was Twenty Questions time, apparently.
"Blue said the word for it is sym-boat. No, um. Sym-bi-ote," Merlyn pronounced carefully.
"Symbiosis," Vati mused thoughtfully, his gaze turning towards the Forest again. "And the entire world talks to you?"
Merlyn nodded. "It has a mind," he offered. "Not like mine because it's not in a body but it does. Um. It's not very loud because I'm only the Heir but Dad can hear it all the time."
"What about Abishai?" Mayavati asked next, hugging his tail closer. "Does he hear it too?"
"I dunno." Merlyn poked at a flake of bark. "Dream likes him but I dunno if it talks to him."
Vati nodded slowly at that; moments later, he offered, awkwardly, "Don't worry about apologizing. I guess I need to stop... thinking so loudly. Or whatever."
"I'll get better at not listening," Merlyn muttered.
"Not your fault," Vati mumbled, clearly not used to trying to be comforting.
"Is, sorta. That one." Merl unfolded from the ball he had curled into and hauled himself up onto the next branch. "I'm practicing shields," he added, defensively.
"Good. ...I want to learn telepathy," Vati said after several more moments of silence, the bottom half of his tail starting to lash back and forth.
Merlyn tilted an ear at Vati. "You should come see Miz Leila when I go have my lesson," he offered hesitantly.
The squirrel blinked up at Merlyn, his own ears swiveling forward again. "Who's Leila?"
"She's teaching me how to shield right." Merlyn draped himself over the branch.
"...I'll talk to her," Vati decided. Hopefully she'd be able to help him do something with his mind. It wouldn't do to just be normal.
Merlyn peered down at Vati. "You can have mine," he offered.
Vati eyed Merlyn right back, once more suspicious. "Your what?"
"Empathy. I don't wannit," Merlyn mumbled.
"Why not? At least then you'd be able to tell when someone's lying to you," Vati muttered back, clearly sore over the issue.
"'Cause it hurts when people are really mad or sad and I can't shield enough. And I don't like feeling things just cause someone else is feeling them. Like when Blue has the bad dream that the Dreams can't chase off and he screams in his head and doesn't wake up." Merlyn shuddered, the fur on his tail puffing slightly.
Vati curled in on himself a bit, hiding most of his body behind his tail. I'd do anything to keep from being lied to again, he whispered ever-so-quietly in the back of his mind; he said only, "I'd go hide then."
Merlyn nodded a little and started slithering down from the tree, seeming subdued.
"Why're you leaving?" Vati asked quietly.
"I don't wanna make you mad," Merlyn said.
"Look, I'm not mad, okay?" The squirrel eyed Merlyn hard. "I didn't mean that you should go hide, idiot."
Merlyn paused, balanced on the branch. "Okay," he said after a moment, and curled back into the hollow of the branch. "What're you reading?"
Vati turned the book and offered the cover for Merlyn's perusal. "A book on abnormal psychology."
"It's a big book," Merlyn said doubtfully. Then he paused, ears swiveling as footsteps approached.
"Hey, kiddo."
The ears went flat. "Go 'way."
"Hey. Merlyn. Listen to me," Vati muttered, then thought at the kitten, careful to keep it from being too loud. Thought you said you were never gonna go away. Give your dad the same chance. And, that said, he grabbed his book and skittered down the tree, quick as a flash.
The thought was neither loud nor clear enough for Merlyn's senses to catch in its entirety, but the ambiguous, half-uncomfortable swirl of emotion behind it was clear enough. "S'not fair," Merlyn muttered, and descended the tree more slowly, shoving his hands in his pockets and glancing sullenly up at his father. "'M here."
