Obie bit back the comment that bubbled up to the tip of her tongue. She was really heading into things that she a) didn't fully understand and b) was not really any of her business.

"I'm sure she and I would have gotten along real well," she smirked sarcastically. She didn't understand people like that, when they spend all their time pushing the people they're supposed to love into becoming something they're not. Her parents had tried, or rather had hoped to try, to get her to become her sister, but it had backfired quite nastily in their faces when she refused. Blinking back the bitterness she wished she could get rid of she made herself smile again.

"I suppose I should be glad that Ne-chan has a mind of his own then," she smiled. "And a mother who wouldn't do such a thing to him," she smirked.

Lahleh smiled and nodded.
"Nope, as far as I am concerned Ra is his own person." She sighed and looked down at the picture again. "I thought his father was stronger."
She smiled back at Obie and turned the page again. "Sorry to tell you all this, I'm sure it is the last thing you wanted. To hear my problems. I'm just a bit stuck for people to talk to, Darya thinks I'm silly. Because if he knocked on the door tomorrow I'd welcome him with open arms."

She swallowed again and wiped her eyes.
"Sorry." She said again. "I didn't think I would get this upset over a bunch of pictures."

As she wiped her eyes, Obie reached out and took her hand in hers and squeezed it gently.
"Don't apologize," she smiled softly. "You can ask Ra, I'm always getting onto him for apologizing when he doesn't need to." She watched Lahleh for a moment and her smile softened more before she glanced back down to the photo album.

"And I don't think you're silly, you know. Things ended unnaturally. There's no ill will, dislike, hatred, or lack of love there," she said, reaching out to run her fingers gently over a smiling younger Ra. "Just poor decisions," she said, and looked up to judge Lahleh's reaction to her words, hoping that she hadn't overstepped her boundaries.

Lahleh looked up at Obie and smiled, how true her words were.
"I cannot express how pleased I am that Ra-ne has you." She said flicking through the album to the end. "And I know it has not been long and I am going to scare you by saying this, but I hope that in a few years you are a real part of our family. Not that everyone hasn't adoped you anyway."

She smiled and played with her wedding ring, which she still wore in some vain hope.
"What do your parents think? Would they aprove of my son, do you think?"

Obie smiled rather warmly at Lahleh's comments. She would be lying to herself to think that she hadn't had the same hope a few times since arriving. The first snag was at the "a" word. Not that there was anything wrong with it, it just wasn't a pleasant one for her to hear. The second one was a lot more obvious, and she knew there was no escaping it. Smirking wryly, she glanced out across the living room before looking down at her hands in her lap.

"No. They would not," she replied honestly. "But their opinions no longer matter," she said, glancing up at Lahleh.

Lahleh smiled and closed the album.
"It is not good that, like Ra you have feel that way about your family. But, like him I am glad you have made the decision to not let them rule you."

She gave a small laugh and looked up with a warm smile.
"I have more than enough family, you can have them. I think Parisa had adopted you already. Which is good. She has only her grandmother as a female role model. Not a good thing. I am glad my husband did one good thing when he returned. He convinced his brother to let her come to university here. It makes me believe he has not been totally lost."

"They are not my family," she corrected suddenly without thinking, then bit the inside of her lip. After a moment, she looked back at Lahleh and smiled. "So it was never really an issue," she amended with a small shrug.

"But I'm honored that you think your family thinks so highly of me," she smiled warmly. "Especially Parisa. I know she is very special to Ra."

Lahleh raised an eyebrow at Obie's words. She did not push the matter, it seemed to be something she was confident with and she did not wish to upset her further. At her second statement she nodded.
"More like a sister really." She said with a smile. "I have had enough of the depressing talk. Ra tells me you want to go into pediatric medicine?" She asked tapping her manicured nails on the leather album. "What made you decide to choose that path?"

Quote:
Obie laughed softly at her direct change of topic and reached up to shove some of her hair out of her eyes.
“Um… I went to visit someone in the hospital and there was a little girl there who had very bad burns on most of her face and upper body. The two of us played with her and the whole time all I wanted was to help her. I think that was the first time I had ever really been around children, and of course there’s my friend’s son, Yuki, whom I adore. I just… really like kids and I’ve always wanted to go into the medical fields. So it just seemed like the right place for me,” she smiled happily.

Quote:
Lahleh smiled and nodded.
"I think it is one of the best fields to go into, believe me having spent a lot of time in and out of hospitals with Ra-ne I know the importance of a good pediatrician. Especially when the child has to go through distressing treatments." She smiled looked across to the picture of Ra's graduation. "I think it is the same for Rashne. He wants to save people as he was saved to give something back." Nodding to herself she reached up to adjust her headscarf absently.
"His father is a doctor, a good one too. I think you'll make a really good pediatrician. You have a very gentle manner."

"Ra has told me as much and I think that it is an honorable notion for him to have," she smiled warmly at Lahleh. "And thank you Lahleh. That really means a lot to me," she continued, a different kind of warmth filling her. Ra had told her much the same, but it almost meant more coming from his mother. Perhaps because of the lack of maternal advice in her life, she thought to herself as she studied the beautiful woman beside her.

Lahleh smiled warmly. She really didn't think Ra could have done much better for himself. Obie was obviously a girl who knew what she want and was not submissive in the slightest. She would definitely keep Ra on his toes.

She was about to speak when the doorbell rang.
"Could you answer that dear?" She asked. "I'll go and make us some tea."

Obie smiled and nodded before rising to her feet. As she made her way to the door, she found herself wondering when Ra would be back. Even if they couldn't be close, she preferred having him near so she could see his goofy grin if nothing else. Smiling at that, she swept her hair back and pulled the door open with a bright smile.

On the doorstep stood a familiar man, white streaking his short, black hair. He was dressed casually, jeans and a shirt, his unmistakable grey eyes looking at Obie in slight confusion.
"Oh, sorry." He said taking a step back. "I believe I have the wrong house? I'm looking for Dr..." He trailed off for a moment, wondering what name she was using here in London. Her maiden name or the one she had spent most of her career using. "Dr Kusani?"

Obie blinked in surprise and forced herself to remain where she was, though she was sorely tempted to take a step back away from the man before her. Away from the man that she and Lahleh had just been speaking of. Away from the man she was terrified of meeting for fear of him managing to take Ra away from her. Clutching the doorknob tightly, she swallowed and glanced back into the house for a moment.

"Um, no. This is the right house," she replied, looking back up into his familiar grey eyes. "I am a guest of... Lahleh's." She wasn't sure what she should do, if she should let him in or ask him to wait while she went to get Lahleh from the kitchen.

Lahleh came to the door, a mixture of emotions and questions. First was anger, why turn up on the most innapropriate of days? Then there was hope, could he be here to make everything right. Fear, was he going to convince Ra to go back with him.

Her hands shaking a little she came to the door. and smiled as brightly as she could manage.

Ra arrived home several minutes later with both his uncle and his cousin Firuz.
Darya greeted them at the door and told Ra about their unexpected guest. Suggesting he and Obie go for a walk whilst his parent talked, she gave him a list of things to get from the shop and urged them both out of the house.

Walking through the local park hand in hand Ra had been silent since they left the house, a thousand thoughts whirling in his head.
"I don't understand." He said squeezing Obie's hand. "Why today?"

Obie had been pretending to watch the people of London as they passed by them, and on a normal day, she would have found the walk quite refreshing and interesting. But instead, she could feel a growing knot of fear working itself into her stomach the longer Ra remained silent. When he finally spoke, she released a breath she had not realized she had been holding and looked up at him.

"I don't know Ne-chan," she replied honestly and softly, returning the squeeze to his hand. She wanted to give him a better answer, maybe one of hope, but she couldn't do that to him, not when she had been there when his parents had seen each other for the first time in such a long time. Not when she could feel the tension between them almost immediately.
