Instantly, the boy recoiled, looking as though he'd been struck in the face. However, he just as quickly recovered, looking more skeptical than ever as he regarded the woman properly.

"'Guests' is putting it mildly. But I guess you could say that. Sure, why not?" He retorted rather edgily, burying his fists deeper in his pockets. "Do we look like staff to you, lady?"

It was appearent the woman was new to the lab, but Shawn couldn't help feeling the least bit resentful. No, he did not belong to those lying, under-handed scientists, no matter what they thought of him as. He wasn't working for them and he certainly wasn't there by choice.

Sighing, Darrow started to wonder if he was the only one on the whole goddamn island other than the scientists that had any clue as to what was going on. Everyone else seemed to have been invited. But of course; he was just the nobody that had accidentally found himself stranded in the middle of their little game. He hadn't been in any life-threatening situation, nor had he been invited. It was simply a matter of bad luck.

"Oh..." Karen said, her face contorting into a frown. "Well no need to be so loud..." She complained rubbing her temples. "So what are you here for? I'm here doing an article on the work of CRONOS... I think I may have an interview with Dr. Hakan later... I'll have to see... I really didn't get him to nail down a time earlier when I first interviewed him..." She shook her head. "And maybe I can find Hayden again..." She was thinking out loud now, not really talking to Shawn anymore.

"OH! How rude of me to drift off like that! I'm Karen, I'm a freelance wirter for a small newspaper, and you are?"

"Loud?" He repeated, anger increasing steadliy along with his voice. "You think I'm being loud?" A sinister chuckle escaped him and he continued in a quieter voice. "You haven't seen loud yet. Not loud like loud can be on a god-forsaken isle like this one."

At her explaination, Shawn raised a brow before reaching up to rub his temples. This was just getting too weird. Why would they bring publicity to this place if everything was under-handed and criminal here? Was he just being too paranoid? But no; he couldn't forget the locked door, the sleeping gas. Something about this whole place was wrong, no matter what everyone else said about it. If only he could figure out what...but until then...

The boy shurgged. "I got here by accident. Pure chance. And all I know is I want to get out of here as soon as possible." Again, that 'Dr. Hakan' name popped up. That was the second time since he'd spoken to Demetri that morning. Must have been a character of authority around there.

However, just then, a name popped up that made Darrow freeze in his thoughts. "What did you say?" he asked, his shocked voice barely a whisper as the woman spoke her own thoughts aloud. In a few moments she was past it though and had already forwarded onto the introductions. But Shawn would not be distracted. "Hold on. Who was that you mentioned just now?"

"Hayden, he's a guard here... About yea tall?" She motioned with her hand about what Hayden's hight had been. "Really handsom?" She chuckled and covered her mouth with the back of her hand. "And quite the gentleman at that," She smiled, remebering how he had walked her back to his room.

Darrow clentched his fists ever tighter in his pockets. "Guard...yeah, I know him," he mumbled through gritted teeth, his gaze straying from Karen's.

"That's the guy, alright...seems he's the only staff I've met since I've got here. filled me in on the whole 'lab research' thing. You could say we're pretty close friends." In a sense. It wasn't totally lying, but if he could get this Karen to tell him where she had last seen the guy, maybe he could have a nice little chat with his so-called 'friend'.

"Oh really!?" Karen nearly squealed clapping her hands. "He really was the nervous type, adorable as hell though!" She laughed and and shook her head. "Sorry about that, I have my moments, I swear, It's cause of my mom, she's blonde..." She laughed a little at her own joke before sighing.

"If you're close friends then maybe you've seen him? We uhm... uh... Have some unfinshed business..."

"Nervous? Gee, I wonder why..." His voice dripped with sarcasm as he rolled his eyes. Shawn withdrew his hands from his pockets to fold his arms over his chest. "I'm sorry if I failed to notice the 'adorable' part..."

At Karen's apology, he gave her a bored look. "Whatever...you can keep your excuses to yourself. It really couldn't matter less to me if your mother had pink hair. But I do need to find out where that Hayden guy is...I've got a bone to pick with him."

He glanced up at her question with un unexpectedly icy expression. "Actually, haven't seen him since the day I met him, but I'm just as determined to find him as you are...though, for varying reasons, I suppose."

Karen frowned. "You're not going to hurt him are you?" She didn't want to see him hurt, she did like him after all, even if she really didn't know him well. Well she was going to be on the island for awhile, so there would be time for that... and if she got some of her needs fufilled at the same time, more power to her!

Her opinion of Shawn was going down hill, first, he didn't introduce himself, second, he was acting like a big JERK! He didn't look that old either!

Raena smiled slightly at Shawn's comment. At least she wasn't the only one as freaked out as she was. Sam seemed to be a bit unwary, but on the inside Raena was terrified. Blinking, she remained silent as he turned his attention to another new comer as they talked about some...Hayden fellow. Who was he anyway? She had never heard his name pop up until now.

"Hay...den..." she said, allowing the name to roll around in her head, just to make sure she had never met the man before. Nope, nothing. Shrugging, she continued to listen. Perhaps she could learn a bit more about this guy. Better then moping around at this moment in time...

Shawn threw the reporter a sideways glance, his mouth twisting into a thin, cunning smile. "Hurt him?" he repeated, as if he couldn't believe Karen had suggesed such a thing. "And what gave you the idea I'd do anything of the sort? I only want to repay him for the kindness he showed me. Wasn't that similar to your intentions?"

The disrespectful fifteen-year-old had carefully made sure he had avoided the question of his identity, especially as the woman had introduced herself as a writer for a newspaper. He certainly didn't want his name showing up in any reports back home in Goldenrod. As if he didn't already have a bad enough reputation living as a homeless, abandoned kid on the streets. So far, he suspected his change of topic had worked, as the nosy writer hadn't inquired any further as to his name.

As long as he could keep her distracted, he had hopes of actually getting her to leave him alone. His angsty attitude seemed to have diverted her attention for the moment to the guard called Hayden. Why had he ever called out to her in the first place? Him and his stupid curiosity!

"Look, lady - Karen. All I can tell you is that the only staff you'll find here is the guards posted around the field. I can't see what good it would do you to interview them, unless you wanted a full report of what we've been doing wandering around here for the past few hours." He nodded toward the door from which Karen had come.

"If you really want to get some information you should be looking in there. There's nothing for you out here. Trust me." For once his voice was serious and steady, and his sepia eyes met her own brilliantly green ones that looked out from behind her glasses.

It was if he were trying to give he some clue; daring her to take his hint and discover for herself what he was far too frightened to speak of out in the open, with guards and cameras and who knew what else around. Someone needed to know the truth. Someone needed to be aware of the reality behind it all, and if Shawn could have chosen one person out of all he had met so far to make them realize, it would have been Karen.

She seemed so naive in her adoration for Hayden and her enthusiam for being on the island. Shawn doubted she really had any inkling of the situation. Then again, after how he'd behaved toward her, he couldn't honestly expect her to follow his advice.

Samantha Hakan

Samantha had remained quiet throughout this exchange; partially out of respect, but mostly out of distraction. Her head was pounding now, going so far as to momentarily black out her vision once or twice. As she started to stand, she stumbled, falling onto all-fours on the soft grass with a curse.

"Dammit..." Her voice was soft, fighting to mask the pain even as she brought up a hand to rub her forehead. Eyes closed, she started to shake her head, then realized that was a bad idea. "Maybe I really have overdone it..." She waved away any hands; she wouldn't allow anyone to help her. She wasn't helpless...not anymore.

"You lot have fun," she muttered, finally staggering to her feet. "I'm out." Motioning to one of the guards to open the door for her, she made her way slowly over to the building and disappeared through the open doorway. Maybe a nap...

Malice the Arbok

Malice let out an unhappy hiss, rather uncharacteristic of the sluggish arbok, at the guard as he finished prodding her out into the exercise yard. She was rather happy he made a hasty retreat, fearing the large serpent; humans should know their places, though few actually did.

The snake let her slitted eyes scroll over the open yard, taking in the lovely views of benches, sky, dirt, and of course the cold metallic glint of barb wire fencing. Yeah, this looked like a theme park. She wondered briefly where Mickey Rattata and Donald Psyduck had gotten off to, a sarcastic smirk tugging at her mouth.

The yard was pleasantly empty. The arbok counted her blessings; she didn't want to have to eat anything that wanted to be perky and talk in her general direction. Raising up, the large reptile pushed her body onto the top of one of the picnic-style tables and basked in the warm sun. The tip of her tail dragged back and forth along the sand, creating an ever deepening rut.
