"Dat's good," Kaveri nodded, straightening up and reaching over to brush some dust off Zach's shoulder. She didn't quite understand why Zach was worrying so much, surely whoever it was that was leaving behind carcasses for her would have already tracked her down and made her their dinner by now. Eau de decay seems to be a good cologne for warding off predators.
"I'm pretty sure dey were done wid whatever I was eating," Kaveri said, not wanting to admit that most of the carcasses she collected were at least a couple of days old. She couldn't stomach fresh meat very well anymore. "Don't worry about me, man. I'll take care of myself. How are you holding up dese days?"

"You- you were eating the animalsss?" He blinked, then looked back at her. Double-standards. She'd eaten a rabbit before in front of him, to his horror. She wasn't supposed to be some killer bird, she was supposed to be Kaveri! And here he was thinking she wouldn't fall prey to the whim of instincts. What kind of bird ate such huge animals? All he could think of were birds of prey, but they only chased after things they could lift up, like snakes and mice. "I'm jussst worried for you. The sssecurity here really isssn't asss foolproof asss they claim it isss. You can get hurt."
He hunched over and hugged his knees. "I've been fine, I guesss. What happened here though?" He gave a nod in the direction of grey face and long fingers.

Had her face not gone rather blue with recent changes, Kaveri would have paled rather visibly. "Well, I-- I can't really-- not eat anyting else anymore," she said, her voice going really small and rather shamed. "I just take what's left over and make sure I'm not stepping on any toes and leave."
She swung her head in the direction of Alec and Tommy. "Not entirely sure, I came out of de jungle just before dat whole... freeze ting happened. And dose guys had Aubrey in a chokehold or someting."
Alec was getting help, it looked like, but the other guy was just laying there. Kaveri stared at him for a few moments. He looked like something you'd find on the cover of Weekly World News or some other supermarket tabloid.
What an unlucky b*****d he must have been.

He considered asking her why she didn't just get meat from the cafeteria, but was distracted by the recent events. Both his wings twitched again. "I didn't know they could do that till now..."
Nervously, he felt for his limp tail with a spasmic hand to reassure himself he still had one. It felt like he was grabbing a snake, not an appendage of his own. The two battered kidnappers looked pretty pathetic. Curiosity tinged his shaky voice. "Were they trying to kill her?"
