When I was in seventh grade I used to tap my foot all the time during when we would play music. But when I got in eighth grade I didn't really need to tap my foot. I just didn't feel like it. I can keep tempo very well without tapping my foot. It is funny when I look down the front row and all the clarinets and flutes are tapping their feet. But it's not bad to tap your feet.

My BD encourages it right up until 2 weeks before a concert, where he goes ballistic to get us out of the habit before we mess up and tap on the Risers.

I tap my foot within my shoe most of the time. You're not really supposed to hear the tapping. I remember our first jazz festival in the eighth grade. We (the trumpets) were all on the same riser thing, and the sixth graders tapped their foots. Not only could I hear the beat, I could feel the beat without tapping my foot in any form.

Many musicians do it all the time. Just because someone doesn't do it doesn't mean they're far better than everyone who does - it just means they can keep the beat in their head instead of using a physical counter to do so.
I do it all the time. ^__^

I am a firm believer that tapping one's foot is a GREAT way to keep tempo; if you are a beginner. Once an instrumentalist/musician gets past junior high school, they need to know how to keep a tempo in their head and not with their foot. I can tell you from experience, most good directors/instructors will undoubtedly throw you out of the room for a few minutes, or the rest of the day or whatever for tapping your foot. In elementary school when you are a beginner? Good deal. In junior high when you are an intermediate instrumentalist? Not a huge deal...but you'd better figure out a way to stop doing it before you go to high school. High school musician/instrumentalist? Don't do it. Don't even get me STARTED on college band.

LOL. Yeah, our middle school band director almost strangled anyone who tapped their foot in class because well, face it, IT'S ANNOYING. haha. I mean, if I was the BD and I saw my whole class tapping their feet, I'd go ballistic. Since my middle school played at a high school level, we were required to look neat and anyone caught tapping their foot was asking to get yelled at. High school, I don't think my BD cares that much, but no one in my class does it anyway. It makes you look like an amateur, and with the level of musicianship in our band, you don't want to look like that. I mean...our band is full of All-State/All-Eastern people...embarassing it would be if you're tapping your foot next to those guys....even worse if you ARE one of those guys, lol.

There's nothing wrong with taping your feet if it isn't too loud. I'd rather tap my feet than get off on a tricky rythem. Taping your feet isn't for babies.

I know that I do it on occasion. Our band director doesn't really have a problem with it, as long as you don't tap it really loudly
