I groaned when I saw the written by credits, but I am now prepared to eat my words. Wowsers! I rather liked that episode. One of my favourite characters is back and, if you stretch a little, you can find references to the Seventh Doctor. What more could I want?

I wonder why Derek Jacobi was reminding me of Ian Holm the whole way through though - although perhaps my near-obsession with that actor may have something to do with it smile

And yes, I managed to remain almost spoiler-free. Here's hoping I can continue that for the rest of the series. Still, it wasn't entirely successful - thanks a bunch, BBC News Ticker!

The question that now arises is, what am I going to do for the next 6 days? Other, secondary questions are:

Where was the middle eight? Curse you BBC!
Why is the BBC's clock different from every other channel's, such that I have to set the recorder to start one minute earlier, yet still have to add another minute on the end, otherwise (like this week's) I lose the trailer?

I wonder if we'll actually see what Utopia is in some later episode.

I must say I enjoyed the latest episode a lot more when watching it for the second time.

Not entirely sure why that is, but it's not the first one I've felt slightly disappointed by at first which has improved remarkably upon second viewing.

It's partly a question of expectations, I think. Some films are like that too.

Another very enjoyable episode! smile

Simms certainly seems enjoyably bonkers enough to carry the role off as the Master, although perhaps a tad excessively so at times.

I shall refrain from spoilers, as I know at least one person here who is in a rather soggy tent rather than parked in front of the TV in the warm. wink

Personally, I thought RTD managed to fumble it completely. Nice mentions of Gallifrey, but why the in your face random cameos?

The last cameo I remember was Courtney Pine in "Silver Nemesis" - and at least it wasn't that blatant.

Gah.

I enjoyed it.

At least one cameo was a cunning reference to the Sea Devils.

Since I'm going to be in a tent next weekend, as well, I'll be scratching around frantically for a copy of the last couple of episodes. confused

I may be able to arrange that, my mum taped the last episode and will be taping the next one too. She's developed into quite a Who-aholic in her old age. biggrin

I should also wind up with both on tape, so in theory....

I would say don't bother, personally. You're missing only a festival of lame & cheese and the creation of a new companion cult. Oh and rewriting some Time Lord facts too...

Hmm.

I must say, I was sorely disappointed. I even slept on it before posting or discussing it in the hope that it might seem better in the morning!

I've been looking forward to the finale all week, and weirdly enough, I still feel like I haven't seen it! It's like my brain is denying it. razz

There were a few good points here and there, but it was hard to catch them as they briefly bobbed above the surface of the ocean of cheese.

For a regular episode, I'd give it a 4/10. As it's a season finale, I'd be a lot more scathing. wink

I've been playing catch-up.

Bartender, get me a retcon.

Please.

Better make it a double.

A REALLY BIG double.

NOW.

And the season started out so well... What the heck was RTD smoking when he wrote that?

There're certain aspects where my canon's going to be falling back to fanfic and theorising - which at least puts more thought into things than the flippin' writers do...

I do wonder why I keep watching and inflicting this upon myself. Then I go "Oh yeah, Blink and Human Nature and, indeed Utopia."

I should really just realise that I am not the target audience and that the things I want (such as pacing and an actual plot and a little less deus ex machina) are irrelevant to today's yoof.

I am reminded of an episode of DangerMouse where the writers deliberately painted themselves into a corner. They then had DM extricate himself from this situation using something called "DM's X Machine". I nearly laughed myself sick...

Damn it.
12 excellent episodes, and RTD goes and loses it. The strain of writing Utopia must've been too much for him.

Roll on Season 5.
