The Witches of Eileanan, by Kate Forsyth.
This is merely the first of a series steeped deep in magic. Every book beautifully written and imaginative. Every character fully created with a chance to meet each one and see it's motivations. There are six books in all and she has started a second series based in the same world, but some years later, that is just as promising.

One series I'd have to recommend is the Dark Tower series by Stephen King. There are seven books in all: The Gunslinger The Drawing of the Three The Wastelands Wizard and Glass Wolves of the Calla Song of Susannah The Dark Tower The only one I didn't particularly like was The Gunslinger, but only because there's a lot it doesn't tell you that you need to know. After that, the books are excellent.

Empress Orchid by Anchee Min
A superbly written book written in a similair vein to that of Memoirs of a Geisha. Set in a China nearing the end of the 19th Century, we follow the story of Orchid, a teenage girl who submits herself for consideration as one of the Emperor's 3000 concubines to save her family from poverty. However, when she enters the Forbidden City she realises that, in order to survive she must adapt and learn to play the game of deceit and treachery that lies within the heart of Imperial China.

Shakespeare(sp?), William: The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet ((BrainMagMo))
My favorite lines from it (Juliet to Lady Capulet about Paris): I'll look to like, if looking liking move: But no more deep will I endart mine eye Than your consent gives strength to make it fly. (Translation: I'll only check him out as much as you're making me.)
