"We'll if will help you out Natalie, then I'd be willing to make the sacrifice and sit around and eat her food," he said trying to look serious, like it would be hard for him to do that, but he couldn't keep a straight face and instead broke out into a grin.

Carver couldn't keep a straight face, either; he broke out laughing, and bit off another hunk of his sandwich. This time, at least, he chewed and swallowed. "Well, I suppose we'll have to take up chess, won't we, Tristan? Just to add that little extra bit of respectability to this fine establishment."

"Maybe I should get some house plants. You know, decorate so it looks like a good old-fashioned park." Natalie grinned, stiffling her laughter long enough to take another bite of her own sandwich, chew, and swallow safely.

"Sounds like fun. I've always wanted to be one of those crotchy old men who sit in parks and stuff," he said still unable to keep himself from grinning. He polished off his sandwich, it was good, he couldn't help but eat it quickly.

"The ones who wear socks and sandals and play chess," Carver added, also finishing his sandwich with surprising alacrity. "And complain about the young people walking over the grass."

"I could always carpet the place in astro turf..." she murmured, thoughtfully, then munched on her sandwich a little. "Though that may be going a little too far. Maybe I could just get a windowbox. Or something."

"We could always complain about how much a nickel got us back when we were young compared to now instead," Tristan said, "But the socks and sandles, that sounds like fun."

"Exactly." Tristan was treated to a rather antiquated high-five, as if Carver had never, in fact, actually done anything so risque as a high-five (and it was up to a jury if he had.) "Natalie, you don't know what the cost of a dollar is. When I was young, you could get a can of cola for fifty pence."

"Yeah, but wasn't it harder to GET said dollar?" She snarked, finishing off her sandwich. "That's how I always understood it."

"Yes, but you can't comment," Carver remarked gravely, but his green eyes were smiling at her. "You're young and therefore pernicious."

She crossed her arms defensively, sticking out her tongue. "But I'll always have a leg up on technology compared to you old-timers. Well. At least when it comes to sewing machines."
Turning on the sink, she began to clean up, busying herself with rinsing off the plates. The sandwiches hadn't made much of a mess, but she'd learned a few years back, when she started living on her own, what a b***h dishes could get to be if she didn't stay on top of them.
