Uh...correction: Gou Hiwatari appears in the manga. In the manga, Kai has a different past. For those who haven't read the manga and don't want to be spoilered (is that a word? xd ), DON'T highlight the next paragraph. But if you want to know because they don't sell the manga where you live or something, then go ahead.
Anyway, Kai grew up in Japan and was close to his dad Susumu. But because of a choice Soichirou - Kai's grandfather - forced Susumu to make, they were separated. That was when Kai was only eight or nine years old; at the same time, he was made sole successor to the company in his father's stead. That's why in Volume 3, Soichirou orders Kai to 'stop this foolishness', meaning Kai should stop Beyblading. And the reason Kai blades is also stated in the flashbacks in Volume 3. He's trying to gather all the sacred beasts so he can use their power to destroy all Beyblades; he blames the tops for the 'loss' of his father. Man, that's ironic... xd
Just a bit o' background info, yeah. (Oh, great; Deidara's taken hold of my mind, yeah...) :XP:

I got it from Volume 3 of the manga. As for Kai's father's name being Susumu, that part I got from my Japanese email pal. 3nodding

Definitely fanfic-y, the name 'Luna'. Especially given the setting. Why would a purely Japanese kid have a mom named 'Luna'? Anyway, as far as I know (and I've read practically the entire series), Kai's mother is never named, only his father.
But that still doesn't satisfy my curiosity regarding the identities of both Hiwatari moms (Kai's and Gou's). Did that make sense? And sure Kai's mom made a tiny appearance in Volume 3, but all she did was hug Kai before the 9-year-old tried to run after his dad, after which Soichirou restrained him. Kai's mom was shown crying in the background in that particular panel (grandfather restraining Kai). But we still don't know her name!
