halfeatnsquirrel My parents have actually sold my own Xbox and games before which really sucked because I paid for the Xbox and most of the games! I'm going back home this week (moved away for University) and if it turns out my parents have done that, there'll be hell to pay, because I paid for most of them too. If I were you, I'd unleash hell on earth . . . as long as when you say you bought them, you mean with your own earned money. If it was your pocket money/allowance, they'll still get you sweatdrop

I can relate, for about seven years now, I'm only allowed to play my video games during long holidays. (i.e. Christmas, March Break, summer). So for the rest of the days, no Nintendo whatsoever. =(

My parents would never do that, unless I play video games instead of do my homework. BTW I will never, ever, EVER grow out of video games

If they don't want you to have a videogame console they should either tell you so or not give you any allowance at all. As for the original poster of the thread. Why not show your mom this thread, all these votes against her actions and the reasons given should count for something. I think you should talk to your mom and figure out what exactly she hoped to achieve by taking those games away, it's the only way to argue with her and convince her that what she did wasn't right and robbed you of something you thoroughly enjoyed. I hope she'll give up on this nonsense soon though. In the meantime, hang on in there. *hug*

My mom only took away my video games when I did something stupid. Lets just say I was a very good kid as to not lose my precious games.

Celes My mom only took away my video games when I did something stupid. Lets just say I was a very good kid as to not lose my precious games. At least that's a reason. After all, they are your parents and they are supposed to take care of you. On the other hand, parents are also supposed, in my opinion, to have at least some knowledge of what their kids are interested in. Saying that someone's too old to play videogames sounds an awful lot like someone who really doesn't understand the medium and still thinks it's some kind of kiddy toy.

My mom takes away my beloved PS2 when I don't clean my room. All I have to do is spend 15 minutes to get it back. My mom is kinda cool with games in a way, 'cause she'd play them herself if she didn't have tendonitis.
If you bought your games with your own money, your parents should only be able to hold your games temporarily... after all, it would be a great incentive to get good grades.
And I still have an NES that I can hook up when she's not around twisted I don't think she knows that I still have that.

I'm so sorry for you. My parents would never do that to me and I'm glad about that. When you get old enough to move out then you can buy some more systems and games. Hopefully it won't come to that. Maybe she'll give them back to you, eventually.

LunaW0lf So, this morning I awoke to find my PS2 missing from its spot, and I FREAKED. I walked into my brothers room to see if he took it, and it wasn't in there. I went to my mom and asked her and she says "You're getting to old for games. Besides, you're a girl, you shouldn't be playing so many video games." At the same time, when I signed onto AIM and MSN, a couple of my guy gamer friends told me that their systems had been taken away too. What is wrong with people?!!!!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! My brother says I'll grow out of video games, BUT I CAN'T!! IT SEEMS INHUMANE crying Someone tell me what to do crying I WANT MY GAMES BACK! She even took away my freaking GBA!!!! Have any of you ever gone through this?! She took away all my systems, and I have basically ALL of them except a DS and PSP. *dies* My games crying Well, as for the question, "Should parents be allowed to take away your videogames?" Of course they can and they are allowed. They're parents. Nonetheless, the reason your mom gave for taking your gaming systems is totally messed up. No one is ever too old for games, (videogames, card games, games of chance, board games, paper & dice games, computer games). As long as you can think, you can enjoy a game. The whole sexist bit is hogwash, too, of course. You may very well grow out of having such a "need" to play videogames, but there's nothing wrong with playing them until you become a vegetable or die. xd There are two sides (sometimes more) to every story though. If my child was addicted to videogames, took them way too seriously or allowed them to affect her life outside videogames, (like school, work or health), then I would definitely have to lessen the time she spent playing. 3nodding If anyone has a problem with their parents taking their gaming privileges, try first to figure out their reason behind it, then tell them why you feel you should be able to have them. Compromise if you need to. If you can't think of a good reason to get them back, then you probably don't deserve them. neutral

If they've done it before, it was to my brother/sister, so I wasn't paying enough attention biggrin

If a kid is being a brat, has done something really bad, or is irresponsible then yes I can see taking away video games as a punishment. However, the argument that "you're too old for it" or "you're a girl" is fallacious. I think it interesting that in the same breath some people will say that video games are for kids, but immediately after that they'll complain about the mature content in games. Video games are for all ages. As far as video games not suitable for girls I'm pretty sure everyone in here would disagree to that. I love to play video games and believe me I am very girly in some respects (and also very unfeminine at other times to be frank).

thats horrid. especially if her excuse is that you're a girl and you'll outgrow them. I think parents can take away games if they bought them as punishment for something wrong that you did/if allllll someone does is play games and does no work/school/leave the house.
Girls can play games. heck, people can play forever....i think the largest game buying popluation is in fact 18-> 25.
heck I'm 21 and i play games still and make computer games in a club.

I'm glad my parents haven't said anything like 'you're a girl' yet. They've made me feel like a weirdo for playing games, and they've expressed that they wished I was more 'girly', but the connection has not yet been made between non-girlyness and computer games.
