Nintendo Punk 05
we had a sectional today, was stupid, got nothing done, then DL fought on the field, HOW FUN!!

Apparently we were too slow, so our DL instructor made us do a lap at the end of practice, full speed, after we ran the show 3 times. He ran with us though. It was an intense practice, because we only have 3 left until All States.

GASP! I was just rifling through the various posts one here, and I saw someone who doesn't like tradition grip!! AAHHH! There's a reason that they call it traditional...IT CAME FIRST!!!!!! lol jk. I've been a drummer waaaaayyyy too long, and I have completely lost my mind. I started when I was three in the Colonial Williamsburg Fife and Drum Corps, so that's where my lust for traditional grip comes from. I can't play any other way. Match grip hurts my wrists. Damn carpal tunnel...Anyway, I played with them for a little while before I realized that they suck and I moved up to New York and joined the Civil War Troppers....that was fun...and hard. I was eight! Anyway, then I got into high school and moved back down to VA and joined up in marching band. Do you have any idea how hard it is for a rudimental drummer who is used to reading swiss music to switch over to random notes on one line? Everyone thought I was stupid...heh. Then I got the hang of it and took over as section leader in my sophmore year. Marched in a 4A band for my high school career.. GO RAIDERS! and we pwned....and then I went to college...I love college...LONG LIVE THE MARCHING ROYAL DUKES!!!!

..and colonial fife and drum o.O I luff my snare drum...

I can still play better matched than traditional I think. Just not as expert control on my diddles traditional left. At the start of the season there was a big war between those who were matched trained and those who were traditional trained smile .

You can get more power out of a matched group which is an upside. As for which is better for pure control, I believe it's matched as well.

I love playing traditional actually, don't want to move off snare line at all, but it is only used for a look or for playing on a tilted drum, that's it.

Actually, that's true. It's a lot easier to play on a tilted drum when it comes to tradition grip, but visual wise, if you can pull it off, tradition looks a lot cooler. There's a lot of things you can do with traditional grip that you can't with matched too. For instance, back sweeps and backsticking is just a whole hell of a lot better traditional than matched. I can see where you're coming from with the power thing, but traditional gives you phenominal force when it comes to playing correctly and efficiently. The left hand is often weak even when it's your dominant hand(I know, I'm left handed), so a lot of power is forfeited when you first start. (Plus is hurts your wrist and gives you blisters) but I love traditional...if you've ever seen a big (even a little) fife and drum corps play, there's a lot of noise...and I do mean ALOT.

Drums: Yamaha Field Corps SFZ (good stuffs)
Sticks: Ralph's or Dennis's (snare drummers should know what I mean)
Practice: Xymox Snare sound, Patriot Brass and Aluminum sticks

Rudimental Drummers are Gods.

Traditional looking cooler if you can pull it off... that depends on what you are playing. If I went to a punk-rock or heavy metal concert and I saw a guy rocking out on a drumset traditional style, it would not look cooler. It would look goofy, odd, and just out of place. It fits in a jazz setting, but a lot of jazz players will play matched anyways.

I play jazz matched, good crazy feels just can't get as much without being matched. Playing a simple groove or perhaps a ballad in a jazz piece though is nice to play traditional.

For marching I agree that traditional looks cooler though. And you made a good point about the backsticking.

I remember when I first started playing traditional, I was just trying to do a simple triplet grid and I couldn't get the power to get real accents on my left hand. I felt so useless smile . I just decided to throw my arm down. Like crazy a** monkey arm convulsions on my left hand to try to make it accent. Ended up making my left bicep sore from playing. lol... such terrible form. But was all I could do in the beginning to get the right sound to come out. Man am I thankful I've moved past that.

lol. Yeah. Agreed with the differnt styles.. I play matched on jazz too, actually. I've never been really comfortable playing rig tradtional because it too hard to play fillers. Can't reach the floor tom without like wrenching my arm out of the socket. It's lovely..I swear. Weird thing is, left handed as I am, I can't play set with the left handed set up either. Well, I tried once, but I missed the second tom twice. It was sad.

But yeah, traditional takes some practice, but it really depends on how you learn. You should have seen me trying to play marching snare match grip for the first time. My marching band made fun of me... I simply could get the power I wanted, sorta like you couldn't with traditional. And I looked like an idiot. But hey, whattya gonna do.
