Nechama Cosi Chirpdee Cosi Hi Everybody! I'm a French Horn player, I used to play F Horn, but now I've switched to a double (B flat) horn. *feels happy, can play high notes* So how's everybody? ~Cosi heart I'm doing okay... >_> I started on a single horn, too, and then switched to double when I switched from private to public school. Double horn allowed me to go above a middle friggin' C for the first time, in 8th grade. XD I could get to a high f on single horn. You want to train yourself to get the higher notes on the single horn first so it is easier on the double. Don't use the double all the time; it will ruin your range. Just trying to help smile eek What are you, some kind of super hero?! hehe. The lady who taught me double horn told me to use double for stuff only above A flat... she wanted me to use it for the lower stuff, but ha! I rule the low end.

I played a single horn my first year, but in seventh grade I got a double. I like it alot better. The second horn in my band has a single and borrows a school double. She doesn't use the Bb side though.

My band director is doing this thing where anytime during band he can point at someone and whoever he points at has to play all 12 scales.. ahhh... Do to marching season I'm on mello and I'm having to relearn the scales on it. Stupid different fingerings.

I can get to the point where you have to use trigger to get to... the uber low F, I think. I don't have the air to support it for very long though >_>

You just need to mess around with fingerings and such. Try it!

Cellos have a working range of about three octaves; the lowest string is C, highest C I can hit is c2. I bet I'm the only non-hornist who's subscribed to the hornlist. domokun

(In case anyone's wondering, that's like the octave down from the G that is the 2nd line) and the highest in an E flat. (4th space) because I suck. hehe.

Last night was 8th grade night for the marching band, so the ONE (the low reeds got six 8th graders! and we only got one crying ) eighth grade horn player brought a french horn to play in the stands, because the middle school doesn't have mellophones, obviously. I switched with him most of the time so he could get used to the new instrument and I got to play stand songs on the horn. It was pretty sweet. Everyone near me in the stands was like "AHH! WTF IS THAT?!" when they heard me, probably because most of the non-band people had never seen or heard a french horn before. I was blastin' out the Hey Song like never before. domokun

If you practice tons and tons of scales it will eventually improve your range. One of my horn friends (an excellent hornist) can get my low range and one octave above the E you were talking about. His secret? Technique exercises. And lots of 'em.
