Magiale looked down at the parchment she was supposed to be filling with words, a frown evident on her pale features - features that looked almost grey in her badly lit room, in the middle of the night.
Her thoughts wandered down to where Raphael was, down in the basement, in that little crate - he was probably asleep right now, like she should be. But Magiale was not able to sleep, not until this little note had been completed and safely sent.
She had a lot to say, as it were. She just didn't know how to begin.
They had had a nice vacation, hadn't they? A three month vacation, she estimated, just exploring. Magiale loved adventure, loved going out to do things that weren't routine or expected of her. And most of all, though she didn't admit this to anyone, she loved escaping her parents. That had been the main reason she'd encouraged them to live in Gambino during the school year. If she'd had her way, they'd be gone during the summer, too.
Telling them about the trip, however, had not been an easy task for her. They had just come back, and suddenly she was telling them that she was going away, to spend alone time with her fairy. Her mother was immediately skeptical.
"Haven't you been spending alone time with that fairy the entire rest of the year? Why not spend alone time with your parents, eh?"
Magiale squirmed uncomfortably under Mrs. Irving's gaze, in a well-done portrayal of Raphael, though she hardly realized it.
"Anyway," her mother continued, "nevermind that he's a 'harmless' fairy, or whatever. Does such a thing exist? Your father and I have been thinking - "
"That's funny," replied Magiale, impatient, "I didn't know you and Dad could do that."
Before either of them could admonish her for that retort, Magiale had swept down the stairs of the basement, told Raphael that they were leaving, and then proceeded to place a gigantic purple tophat over her bunny ears.
Raphael looked at her curiously, the little round yellow gemstone in his hands.
"This hat," she stated, looking at Raphael's curious glance, "is going to be your shield. Gaia is not always a nice place for small fairies to be wandering about." Her last words had an edge of warning to them.
With Raphael tucked safely in her hat, Magiale took a small bag of belongings and gaian gold and went out the door. She didn't look back at that house, and therefore didn't notice her parents watching her leave silently from their living room window.
They'd passed through Barton town without incident. Magiale bought a cherry popsicle from a passing icecream man and handed a bit of it to Raphael, who emerged from eating it with red stains all over his face and hands.
It was not long before they'd passed out of the border of Barton and the civilized towns, and found themselves in a large, unmapped forest. And that had been where their adventure had begun.
Magiale yawned down at the piece of paper.
Of course, that had had nothing to do with what she was writing now. Fuzzy had not been there while they dodged tree-gaurdians and avoided forest sprites and nymphs. Nor had he rescued Magiale as her hat was barraged by foreign fairies, convinced that it was one of their own kind that she hid therein. And it had not been his laugh she had heard as a centaur, who called himself Adau, led her to the other side of the unmapped forest.
The two adventurers had then squeezed through the valley of two gigantic mountains that seemed to rival one another in height. And then, on the otherside, found not the town that a local map had promised them, but a bleak desert, apparently cursed by a vengeful sorceror not too long ago.
So they crossed the desert, and the incident of the ice cube shortage occurred.
In fact, they had not met Fuzzy until they had been about to leave the oasis town, three weeks since they had first left home.
She had not recognized him when she saw him - dressed in white instead of black, but still covered heavily, a mask over his dark face.
He had approached her, and when he spoke, his tone was surprised.
"Magiale! What are you doing here?"
She looked at him, surprised.
"Fuzzy? Oh dear, fancy meeting you here." She gave a nervous smile and attempted to walk away.
"Magiale," he repeated sternly, "now is not a good time to be here, whatever your reason. The desert is newly made, and not safe. Why aren't you at home?"
She looked back at him with a sniff, "I can't stand being home, right now, especially with Mom and Dad there. And I thought Raphael might like some fresh air."
He frowned.
"You have your fairy with you? I must warn you - "
"Don't worry. He's hidden." She pointed at her hat with a grin.
Fuzzy shook his head, "He's not hidden well enough. Someone looking for him could easily find him, Magiale, and right now, there is someone looking for him.
"What?"
"We must leave for the north immediately. Follow me."
Fuzzy moved forward briskly, his white robes billowing about him and swirling up the sand.
"W-wait, who's looking for him?"
"Not now."
So they walked in silence. After awhile, Fuzzy slackened his pace slightly and walked beside the struggling Magiale.
"Don't look behind you, but someone's following us," he whispered to her out of the corner of his mouth, "he's been following us for awhile now, and I doubt this is a coincidence. I suggest you go on ahead - follow this path. I will catch up with you shortly."
Magiale nodded and continued along the desert road. She tried not to flinch as, ten minutes later, she heard a blood-curdling scream behind her. Another ten minutes, and Fuzzy was again walking in front of her, the only evidence of his scuffle being a long, red gash on his shoulder. She didn't ask any questions.
~~
Magiale looked down at the paper again, and, with a sigh, put the pen against it and began to write. It needn't be anything fancy, right? Thankyou letters never needed to be too eloquent, so long as they brought home their main point: that the writer was thankful, grateful, and glad, that such a person as they were writing to existed, and had helped them as they had.

Dear little pieces of paper,
It has been a long time since I have written on you. I think I may have misplaced you, but now you're here again, and that's good. It has been about a month since the older lady and man have left. Magiale called them "Mom" and "Dad", explaining that they were her "parents". I don't think I quite understand what parents are, exactly, but Magiale and I left before I could really find out. We went on an "adventure" as she calls it, and it was fun. We went all over the place. I remember we met lots of people. They were very kind, but Magiale said we had to move on, and I never actually saw any of the people, just heard their voices. It was a shame too, since some of them actually knew I was there and wanted to see me. It's strange when people actually want to look at me. They were all very kind. I think Magiale could have been nicer to them...though, as I already know, Magiale knows what's best, right?
I flew by the new shop the other day. I didn't enter it, I just passed by it. I don't think anyone was there. It looked kind of scary, especially since it was so close to the remains of the other shop. I wonder if it's as dusty?

Raphael was sitting on a large, dusty tome - or rather, to him, it seemed like a large, dusty tome. In truth, it was just a really old hard-cover book that he'd found sitting half open on the ground. Interested, he had flown over to see what it said.
The words were penned in neat, fluid handwriting, and the pages were yellowing and dog-eared in the corners. It was clearly some old diary, considering the date at the top - December 22nd, 1933 - and the "Dear Diary," just under it.
Despite the neatness of the handwriting, Raphael found himself having trouble reading it.
So, of course, he was doing other things.
In his hand he had his plastic rapier - it had become a bit worn, despite never being used, and right now it was chillingly cold.
Raphael had slowly discovered, after a bit of experimenting, that he had the power to make things colder. The fast approach of wintertime, of course, rendered this skill unnecessary, but he still found it interesting.
Still concentrating on keeping the rapier as cold as he could, Raphael stood up and swung the yellow thing forward and sideways, watching it swish through the air. He did this again and again, until he accidentally lost his grip on it and it went flying through the air, landing a few feet away.
With an embarassed smile, Raphael flew over to retrieve the rapier again. There really was no reason for him to have an embarassed smile, as there was no one else around, but it was habit, and he made sure to accompany the embarassed smile with a blush as he went back to the half-open book.
"Raphael!" called Magiale's voice from upstairs - it was early in the morning, yet she knew by now that Raphael would be awake - "breakfast!"
The fairy obediently flew up the staircase and smelled fried eggs. Magiale had a plate of fruit cut in tiny chunks on the table - that was for Raphael. He landed next to it and took a piece in both hands.
"Sleep well?" Magiale asked cheerfully.
Raphael nodded, his mouth full to bursting with watermelon.
"Great!" she grinned. Clearly, she was in a good mood, a strange thing for her in the mornings, though Raphael didn't make the connection.
"I'm gonna go running today, Raph, so you'll be able to take care of yourself, yeah?"
Raphael nodded again. He had so far able to take care of himself when Magiale was at school, so this weekend run wouldn't be too hard for him.
One strange thing he'd noticed over the past few months was the lack of Simara and Aramis. Lately, they rarely appeared, only visiting once or twice a month or a week to say hello or go to sleep. It had confused Raphael that they did this, but he didn't bother them about it - they also seemed more grumpy than usual - even Simara, who was always grumpy.
After Magiale had shoved some eggs and orange juice down her throat she was out the door, and Raphael began to eat a piece of pineapple, musing silently about...stuff.

Magiale's run had taken just a bit longer than she thought it would. She'd run a mile, then stopped, too tired to run any farther. And then she considered running home again, until she came across an ice cream shop she'd never seen before! She just had to try it out. When she left the shop, with a ice cream cone in hand, she considered going home and sharing some with Raphael, but then she remembered that he didn't like ice cream. With a shrug, she had gone next door to look at a pair of leather boots thatt was on sale. 30% off! She was poor, but she could still ogle them, couldn't she? And then she reluctantly left the boots behind to look at a rather cute looking dress next door - it was filmy and silky but it also would look horrible on her, she realized. Pouting, Magiale then...
Yeah. By the time she was finished looking at stuff, it was well into the evening, and Magiale realized with a start that she had left Raphael alone all day! Oh no.
Magiale sprinted the whole way home.

"Raphael?" Magiale called out after she had entered the house. She turned on the light - the house had been empty and dark for the entire day. In the kitchen, she found the partially eaten plate of fruit she'd made for Raphael that morning.
"Raphael!" she called again, "I'm home!"
Magiale disposed of the plate still almost filled with fruit and set about washing the dishes. She wasn't particularly worried about whether Raphael was still alive or not - he was usually pretty good at taking care of himself. He had, after all, been doing so for a little more than a year.
Magiale suddenly found herself pondering all the things that had happened to her since Raphael had entered her life. For one thing, the cooking clock had broken - she scowled at its still ticking remains. She'd had to learn how to cook, and how to wash dishes - but it was all good. Life skills anyway, right? Finishing the dishes, she set about cooking dinner - spinach, mashed potatoes, and chicken - and some tomato bits and cottage cheese for Raphy, and some peach bits, too.
"Raph, dinner time!"
Magiale's call seemed to ring out in the house, the eerily large and empty house, echoing against the hollow walls - there was something oddly chilling about the house that she couldn't explain. And she hadn't seen or heard Raphael since the morning.
"Raphael?"
Magiale descended the stairs of the basement, taking care to make sure it was well lit before she went too far.
"Raphy, dinner time!"
"Okay!" said a tiny voice. Magiale frowned. That wasn't Raphael's voice.
"Who's there?" she asked. The voice was coming from the crate, but she couldn't see inside it.
The voice sounded confused, "I-I don't know..."
"No, I mean, who are you?" Magiale corrected herself automatically. Somehow, she already knew the answer.
"Raphael..." he replied. He had been told that one was supposed to reply to a "who are you" question with one's name, unless the person asking said question was somehow dangerous.
"Raphy, your voice has changed!"
"Yeah..." the voice sounded puzzled.
"Come out where I can see you!" Magiale demanded, suddenly excited.
He obeyed. Slowly, hesitantly, a slightly larger, blushing Raphael wandered rather awkwardly out of the crate, yellow gem in hand.
"Raph!" Magiale squealed, "you're an adult! You've grown!"
Raphael still looked rather...out of it.
"R-really?"
He looked down at his hands. He didn't feel like an adult. Weren't adults strong and tall and wise and mature and teachers to all? He didn't feel like any of those things.
"This is sweet," Magiale gossipped on, placing Raphael on her shoulder, "you were a bit of a late bloomer - well, actually you emerged from your bloom pretty early, if I remember correctly - it was awhile ago.." she squinted, as if she were trying to see something far away, "anyway, but yeah, you took a long time to grow into an adult. Most didn't take more than 6 months, if I recall correctly." She shrugged.
She went up the stairs and continued cooking; adult Raphael was chewing on cottage cheese curds nearby.

Though Raphael was now an adult, Magiale couldn't help but notice how little he seemed to have changed.

Certainly, he was taller, and looked older than she did, and moved a bit more awkwardly - but despite the physical, he was still the same Raphael he had been before his growth. She figured he was like a child in the body of an adult - and despite herself, she was glad.

The two were eating a late lunch in the kitchen - Magiale had recently come home from school and had immediately prepared a couple hard boiled eggs and orange juice, saving some raisins and carrot chunks from lunch for Raphael. Magiale was also filling in the letters of todays cross word puzzle in the newspaper, watched curiously by Raphael.

"Say, Raph," she suddenly said, "what's another word for binge?"

"Binge?"

"Yep."

Raphael pondered for a few minutes, but couldn't think of anything. He shook his head - supposedly shaking one's head was the way one said one didn't know.

Magiale shrugged and moved onto the next word.

The silence of their meal was punctuated a few minutes later by the phone. Magiale looked up in surprise - nobody ever called! She quickly picked it up.

"Hello?"

"Hello, Magiale," replied a woman's brisk voice - her Mom.
She attempted to hide her disappointment.

"Hi Mom. What's up?"

"Nothing much, honey, but I've got some bad news."

Of course. Why else would Mom call?
"Did something bad happen?"

A sigh.
"No, but you see, honey, the heating bills this year are bordering on the
astronomical - "

Talking about money. Typical.
" - and as you're the only person in that house - and it's such a big house! we'd really suggest that you move out - stay with one of your friends. You have a few of those, don't you? We just can't afford to keep the house heated during the winter."

"I see."

"I'm really sorry about this, dear, but I can assure you both of us gave the matter a great deal of thought - "

Without her input, of course,
"And it'll be for the best. Really!"

They finished the conversation. Magiale was the first to hang up after they had said their goodbyes.

Magiale sighed. No heating? She could do without - and Raphael could, too!

Magiale

The taller Raphael entered the newer headquarters with wide eyes - he had never been inside before. It was bigger, and...less dusty, he noticed with a little disappointment. He had kinda liked the dust of the old shop.
He entered what he supposed was the lounge and hovered in the center of the room, not sure what to look at first, or perhaps afraid that too much exploring would be nosy and rude.

Ice Queen
He had to get help... It was the only thing echoing in Aleric's mind as he made his way into the waiting room of the shop. Soho had started bleeding after Silva had hit her, but the problem was... she hadn't stopped. Even after Aleric had found out what happened and healed her.

This was beyond him. So much bigger than all of them... and he was afraid that Silva would do something... He dropped down on one of the chairs, breathing hard. Never had he felt this weak before... And once in a while his fingers and toes went numb...

He had to get help for all of them.

Magiale
Raphael noticed something coming from the room he had left. He wasn't quite sure how he noticed it, or what it was exactly, but he did. It was nice, and it was comforting. Without thinking, he went back to the waiting room.
The sight of another feien caused him to falter...though the face looked familiar. He shyly flew towards the chair where the other Feien lay, but didn't say anything.

Ice Queen
His eyes had closed... but he opened them with a little effort. It was another feien. He took a deep breath, forcing himself to be polite. "Hello... I think I know you..." He said, a little, slightly forced smile pulling on his lips. "But I believe you were... shorter."

Magiale
Raphael nodded, a blush coming across his cheeks at being directly addressed. He smiled as well, though something seemed wrong about the way the other feien seemed to be gasping for breath...and just lying there.
"A-Aleric, was it? ...You look - tired."
Tired didn't seem to be the right word, but was all he could think of.

Ice Queen
"It's umm..." He took another breath. "It's okay... really." He said. He didn't want to worry the other feien, and he could already tell that he was. A little. "Just a little... food poisoning." He pushed himself up to his elbows. "Have you seen any... of the people that work here?" He asked.

Magiale
Raphael had no clue what food poisoning was, but for the sake of not being annoying, he didn't press the subject. It was good to know that Aleric was fine, though - Raphael had thought, for a moment, that he wasn't.
"People who work here?" He pondered the question. He'd never actually been to this shop before, so...
"No..." he answered apologetically.

Ice Queen
"Oh." Aleric said. He was so weak, though, that he didn't think he would be able to make his way home yet. But he didn't want the other feien to know that. "Then how have you been?" He asked. Obviously the other feien knew nothing about the cupcakes. That was for the best.

Magiale
He flew over to sit on the arm of a nearby chair, as hovering in midair was becoming tiring.
"I...I've been well." He wasn't quite sure what else to say to the question. Magiale, he knew, sometimes went on play-by-play accounts of her entire life story, but Raphael wasn't that good at that kind of story telling.
"I grew up." he tried.

Ice Queen

"It's a very important transition." Aleric said softly. "Some adults I've met have yet to do that." He lowered himself to his back again, his fingers going through one of their numb phases again. He hoped the numbness wouldn't travel upwards. The very idea of his entire body unable to move sent a flare of panic through him.

But then he felt his fingers again. He took another breath. "Have you enjoyed being an adult?"

Magiale

Some adults haven't grown up? Raphael furrowed his brow slightly.
"I, don't really feel like a grown up, to be honest..." It was true. He'd acknowledged that he'd gotten taller and that he moved more awkwardly, but an adult?
Raphael thought about it, not noticing how obviously stressed the other Feien was. Aleric had said he was alright, right? Perhaps he just liked lying down.

Ice Queen
Aleric laughed, just a little. "Then how does it feel being taller?" He rephrased. At least the male was honest. Many lied about just how "Grown up" they were. He himself wasn't sure there really was such a state.

And no doubt that state came with far too much responsibility for most to want to achieve.

Magiale
This was a question Raphael could answer.
"Awkward...and strange!" he smiled, thinking about it. "My wings are larger than they used to be - and they get caught in places sometimes." He shrugged. Curious, he continued polite conversation,
"What was it like when you grew up?"

Ice Queen
Aleric blinked at the question. Then hesitated. "In all honesty, I don't really remember. Since I'm an ancient I came from a stone, fully grown." He shook his head. "But I'm sure I was awkward at first as well."

Magiale
Raphael felt a little embarassed.
"Oh, so you don't rem - " he stopped himself. What if he was being rude?
"I-I met a stone once," he said reflectively, trying to remember. It had been awhile ago.
"Could you...could you see anyone... as a gem?" It was a stupid question, but Raphael was thinking of his last meeting with Celaien, and this feien seemed like a well of information.

Ice Queen
"Actually, I don't remember much about being a stone, either." Aleric said thoughtfully. "As far as I'm concerned life started as an adult. I don't mind, though."

Magiale
"Oh..."
So perhaps Celaien hadn't noticed him. Hm.
"I don't really remember being a bloom either, though Magiale's told me that I was one for a little bit," he said. It seemed strange to him, though he didn't say so, to not have a childhood to remember.

Ice Queen
"What memories we don't have can be replaced by memories that we make." Aleric said philosophically. "Although I don't remember my childhood I have wonderful memories nonetheless."

And he would be sad to see this life go... Silva, Soho... all the people that he had become friends with... "Value what memories you do have." He said softly.

Magiale
Raphael started slightly at the strange thought that Aleric had known what he had been thinking - but perhaps he was just imagining things. Anyway, what Aleric said sounded smart and wise.
"It's good you have good memories," he agreed, "I...um,"
How should he finish the sentence? He paused.
"I'll value them, the ones I have."

Ice Queen
"So will I." Aleric said hoarsely. "So will I." He fell silent for a moment, memories flashing through his mind. Was he going to die? He wasn't sure... He was more worried about Soho than himself.

"But there's always new memories to make, right?" He offered.

Magiale
"Definitely!" Raphael agreed. He supposed memories only stopped being made after you died, and even that rule didn't seem to apply to Aleric.
He shifted slightly in his seat to look more closely at the other feien.
"You look...tired," he repeated, blushing slightly. "I'm...I'm bothering you, aren't I?"

Ice Queen
"It's fine..." Aleric said. "I'm fine... I just need to... Sleep for a bit." His eyes drifted closed and his breathing grew shallow.

Magiale
He was right - Aleric was tired.
Not quite sure what to do, Raphael stared for awhile, despite knowing that staring was rude - and then headed out the window towards home.
Half an hour later, a human figure came into the waiting room. She had Raphael on her shoulder and looked down at the fairy on the chair.
"You're worried about him, eh? Well, he looks like he took nap, but he might catch a cold...."
Magiale took a handkerchief from her pocket and carefully covered the fairy, taking care not to accidently jostle him.
"There we go. Hopefully his owner will find him."
They left.

"Well, it's good to know you're making friends, at least," Magiale smiled.
Raphael blushed and nodded.
"You really should go outside more often. It's autumn, after all - nice and cold outside."
"It's also cold inside," Raphael pointed out politely.
"Ah...I noticed," Magiale's smile was a little forced as she shivered beneath three layers of wool blankets. The house apparently had horrible insulation...probably because of all the windows.
Raphael was playing with his paint set and a piece of 8x11 computer paper. His designs, however wonderful they might have been, were impossible for Magiale to see, since her eyesight had yet to stop deteriorating. Nonetheless, she encouraged him and enthused about how wonderful his artwork was. Raphael smiled and said thankyou and was too polite to point out to Magiale that he was actually writing a journal entry.

Quote:
Hello big piece of paper! I've never written on you before. Magiale gave you to me and told me to draw on you, but for some reason I did not feel like drawing today. I don't know why. Maybe writing is a better way for me to tell what I'm feeling, rather than images. There was a weird book that said stuff like that. Magiale told me about it.
The other day I met the feien who talked about soccer again. He didn't talk about soccer this time - he talked to be about life instead and stuff and I was really confused and acted like an idiot and repeated the stuff he told me in answer form - that weird conversation tactic of telling a person what they just told you. It's really weird, but for some reason I started using it. Anyway, he didn't seem to be doing too well, so I bothered Magiale about it. I really didn't want to waste her time, but I was concerned, so she put a blanket on him and left. I haven't gone to the shop since, though, so I don't know how he is right now.
Anyway, today is Halloween. Magiale has piles of candy in front of the door, but she says she's staying at home this year. She seems almost like Aleric in that she doesn't seem to like moving.

Raphael stopped - he had been pressing too hard with the paintbrush and his hand was feeling kind of sore. Stretching, Raphael took of into the air and flew in circles over the paper, looking over his 'handiwork', whilst Magiale looked on enviously. Boy, wouldn't it be fun to be able to fly...
PostPosted: Fri Nov 25, 2005 7:58 pm

The fire crackled and popped merrily in the middle of the yard, smelling strongly of burning leaves and sounding suspiciously like rice crispies. A stick with a marshmallow on the end was held above the flame, turning this way and that, held by a hand hidden beneath five layers of wool blankets. Magiale sat in her yard, her cold, dry yard - honestly, there wasn't any difference between the house and the yard, except that the house would burn down if she tried to build a fire in it.
Near the fire she had pitched a crude tent out of canvas and a couple of sticks. It stayed standing more out of luck than out of structural soundness. Nonetheless, it was a comfy tent, filled to the brim with blankets, pillows, bottled water and chocolate. Oh yes, the chocolate.
Deeming the marshmallow nicely roasted, Magiale drew it from the flame and sandwiched it between two graham crackers and a piece of chocolate. Aah.
"Want a s'more, Raph?" she asked, turning around to look for the fairy.
Raphael, who was a good distance away from the flame, shook his head politely.
"Thank you for the offer."
Magiale squinted.
"Does that mean yes or no? I was never good at this politeness stuff."
Raphael blinked.
"I-it...means..."
Raphael hadn't realized it before, but saying no did seem rather rude, didn't it? On one hand, it was wrong to intrude and take someone else's food, or stuff - on the other hand, wasn't it also wrong to refuse the performing of services? Eating someone elses food wasn't exactly a service, but refusing it still involved saying no.
He shook his head. He knew shaking your head meant no, but perhaps Magiale didn't know that.
"I'd like a s'more, yes," he said finally, "i-if it's not too much trouble."
"Not at all!" grinned Magiale, and she popped another marshmallow on the stick and stuck it in the flame, "I always liked making s'mores."
"What are they?"
"A marshmallow and a piece of chocolate between two graham crackers," she recited. She had known Raphael would ask that question, so she'd made sure she wouldn't be caught off guard. She congratulated herself for her quick thinking.
Raphael flitted as close as he dared to the burning flame and watched the marshmallow cook.
They sat in silence for awhile, Raphael watching as the marshmallow slowly browned.
"What do you want for Christmas, Raphael?"
Raphael was startled by the sudden question. Magiale was looking into the fire rather thoughtfully.
Raphael suddenly remembered Christmas last year, how he'd gotten a feien named Maquinar a lollipop - he wrinkled his brow. Christmas. The time of giving presents. The birthday of Christ. Santa Claus, and secret Santa Claus.
"You don't need to give me anything," said Raphael apologetically.
Magiale turned on him, shocked and appalled.
"*Not* give anything to you for Christmas? Are you mad?"
"I - Did I seem mad? I'...I'm sorry, I'm not mad...I - "
"Well, you seem mad to me! Honestly, not want anything for Christmas?! I know you're grown up and all, but that doesn't excuse you from getting any presents!"
Raphael winced. He'd gone and done it now!
"I- I'm really sorry - "
Magiale rolled her eyes.
"You're really weird. Did you know that? When I was a kid, *I* certainly didn't not want a present. As a matter of fact, I was one of those awesome brats who always got what she wanted. I know you're not a kid anymore, but you got to be more bratty."
"B-bratty?"
"Yeah! Whining, always wanting your own way, snarling and scowling and crying whenever someone says something mean - it was rather fun."
It was Raphael's turn to look shocked and appalled.
"I - I, I'm sorry, I couldn't do that,"
"And why not? Ah, sh - shoot."
Magiale scowled heavily as she took a badly charred piece of carbon out of the flame.
"Sorry about that, Raph. Shoulda been paying attention. I'll get another one up in a jiffy - "
"That's alright," said Raphael kindly, "I don't want to trouble you."
And before Magiale could assure him that there was no trouble at all, Raphael was gone.

Raphael's breath was fogging in the cold air as he flew towards the shop. He was familiar with the phenomenon by now, of course, but it still fascinated him. He breathed in and out, purposefully trying to create as much fog as possible. Raphael never made as much fog as his bond did, though he made just enough to prove that there was some kind of heat within him, even if his element was cold.
He flew through the window he had flown through last time, landing on the window pane. The Raphael-made breath fog disappeared as he came into the waiting room and looked about curiously.

Athan walked steadily down the street towards the Feien HQ. Truly, he had no real desire to be out in the cold weather. He disliked the cold quite a bit and greatly preferred the warmth of spring and summer to the nipping chill of fall and winter. Either way, Lorelei had insisted it was absolutely necessary for her to get out of the house, and seeing as his house was in another dimension, he had to be the one to open the portal to Gaia.

He likely would have complained a great deal more, if not for the fact that he hadn't taken the time to really interract with her all that much. Plus she'd been trapped in his dusty old house (though she didn't at all mind the dust since it was her element) for weeks now and was beginning to grow restless.

Lorelei sat on her bonded's shoulder with a smug sort of look on her face. It had been relatively easy to play upon the man's conscience to convince him to take her out of the house. He truly was a nice guy but she had had more than enough exploring of the house, and now wanted to peek about the Feien HQ some.

Upon seeing the building she glided away from Athan with her red bat-like wings outstretched fully. She smiled faintly as she hit the buzzer and flew inside.

Magiale

Despite himself, Raphael jumped when he heard the buzzer. He turned from staring at the waiting chairs to face the entrance instead. He immediately noted the little red feien entering, as red wasn't an easy color to miss, but didn't notice the bond.
Hovering in the air, he paused before remembering himself. He flew towards the red one with a hesitant smile. Best not to make them come for you, Magiale had said rather recently. He didn't quite understand why, but that was what she had said.
"H ello," he said in a small voice, hovering about a foot from her.

Reyna Crelos
"Uh.. hello," Lorelei replied as she eyed the other Feien a bit curiously. She'd seen plenty of her kind before, but she hadn't really done much socializing. She was typically a bit too preoccupied to pay much attention to anyone or anything else. She paused for a moment, hovering midair before deciding that it couldn't hurt to attempt at being social. "I'm Lorelei... and your name is?"

She idly glanced behind her when her bonded entered the shop with a faint scowl on his face. The sour look melted somewhat when he was greeted with a warm burst of air after stepping out of the cold. "Going to the kitchen for coffee," he muttered faintly as he dragged his long trench-like coat tighter about himself and headed towards where he remembered the kitchen to be the last time he had visited.

Magiale
Raphael realized, quite suddenly, that this other feien was actually shorter than he was. He'd met shorter feien before, but it was a rare thing. He blinked, a bit disoriented as the bond went into the kitchen. However, he smiled again as they entered introductions. He was relatively familiar with the process by now.
"Raphael," he answered, floating backwards a bit despite himself.
"It's nice to meet you, Lor ah lye."

Reyna Crelos
"Nice to meet you as well," she answered with a small smile before idly ruffling her bright blue and yellow hair with one hand in an unconscious gesture. "Have you been here before?" she asked curiously. She'd only been to the HQ once when she'd first been bonded to Athan, but that wasn't information she was going to readily volunteer. She wasn't exactly forthright when it came to divulging information of any sort.

Magiale
Raphael, on the other hand, didn't seem particularly hesitant about divulging information.
"I've been here only once before," he admitted. Aleric did not seem to be here as he was last time, however - perhaps he had gotten better.
A bright tinge came to his cheeks as he managed to stop himself from drifting backward. He had just noticed it when he'd tried to speak - how stupid of him!
"I really don't know much about the place," he noted humbly. "Have you been here often before?"
The question seemed the polite response, at least to him.

Reyna Crelos
Lorelei paused a moment as she eyed the other Feien. "Mm.. not very often," she replied. It wasn't at all an outright lie. She hadn't been there only but once before which was the equivalent of not often. She smirked at that thought before shoving it aside, as she noted that the other Feien seemed a bit nervous. He kept backing away from her.

Did he possibly think her a threat? She found that thought rather amusing, though she wasn't truly the sort to instigate a fight for no reason. Wrestling in general sounded fun, just for kicks. She was fairly certain that she could take on the other Feien easily enough, though that wasn't something she at all intended on doing. Raphael was nervous enough as it was, and he seemed to be a bit older than her. Underestimating someone so easily probably wasn't too bright of an idea.

"Do you know where the kitchen is?" she asked simply. That was where Athan had said he was going and she hadn't paid attention to which direction he had gone off to.

Magiale
Raphael shook his head apologetically, blushing.
"I never really explored the place," he said, "but I think it's nearby. Well, actually..."
He thought further about it, and then turned towards the hallway that had lead him into the lounge before.
"I might have passed by it once," he admitted sheepishly. "I - I think I can show you."
He began floating towards the hallway, struggling with whether he should go off immediately and expect her to follow, or whether he should wait for her to answer.

Reyna Crelos
"Alright," she answered as she flew after him, "Let's go!" She beamed brightly as she allowed her wings to carry her high up into the air before dashing back down again to rush past Raphael playfully. It made her rather giddy, and it was excellent excercise in her opinion.

Despite the tall, vaulted ceilings in Athan's home she'd stayed rather low to the ground. She'd discovered fairly quickly that things within that house weren't always what they seemed, but this place was intended to have Feien flying about. That was the reasoning her mind supplied her with anyway.

She paused before one of the open door ways in and peered inside. The kitchen! And there was her bonded, brooding over his cup of coffee, still bundled up to ward off the chill.

Magiale
Raphael nodded and smiled as he found himself following after her instead of leading. At least she was beaming, so that was a good thing. He gaped at her acrobatics and also looked after where she was peering.
"Um, I think this is the kitchen," he said rather unnnecessarily. Even though he was almost in the kitchen, he was once again attacked by doubt and hesitated there, watching the human.
"That is your bonded?" he asked politely, but once again unnecessarily.

Reyna Crelos
"Yes," she replied as she headed up towards the table and landed a little ways away from Athan's coffee mug, "This is Athan." She glanced back towards the other Feien and then to her bonded, "That's ...Raphael, wasn't it? Yes."

The man smiled faintly and gave a less than enthusiastic wave as a greeting. Really, he wasn't so bad of a guy, but he was a bit tired. He hadn't been resting well as of late, and being out in less than pleasant weather drained him somewhat. "It's a pleasure," he spoke up in a low, quiet voice as he peered curiously over at the other little fairy. He hadn't seen many of Lorelei's kind, so the novelty of having being around fairies and the like hadn't quite worn off.

Magiale
Raphael smiled politely as he came into the kitchen finally, nodding.
"I am Raphael, yes. It's nice to meet you as well," he said to Athan. Raphael could smell the coffee from the coffee mug rather clearly - it smelled very strong, at least for him. Raphael's wings began to twitch, causing him to turn slightly. He quickly corrected himself.

Reyna Crelos
Athan reached for his coffee and took a sip as he glanced from Raphael to his own fairy. Awkward. He wasn't quite sure what to say to either of them, really. He wasn't really the best conversationalist unless he was selling something, charming someone, or arguing with Reyna. He was a quiet man by nature, but what did one discuss with two fairies?

Lorelei wasn't at all bothered by her bonded's silence. She'd become rather accustomed to it, and almost preferred it in a way. She liked how he left her to her own devices most of the time. It gave her plenty of time to work out ideas for .. well.. everything!

"So.. I'm going to take a wild guess that you came here on your own?" Lorelei asked Raphael suddenly as though the thought had just struck her. At the same time she walked towards where Athan's hand lay on the table. There was a small piece of string dangling from his coat's sleeve. It would be perfect for her little... project.

Magiale
Raphael was caught off guard by the question, but nodded, suddenly thinking of Magiale.
"Yes, I came here alone..."
He smiled sheepishly and stared at his feet. Apparently his feet were nervous, as they were shivering slightly. He was feeling a bit tired just hanging in the air, now that he thought about it. Raphael twitched his wings and lit over to the kitchen table, keeping his distance from the heat of the coffee and the silent bond. He hoped he hadn't done anything wrong.
"Is that okay?" he asked, fidgeting.

Reyna Crelos
Lorelei blinked, a bit taken aback by Raphael's question. "I don't see why it's not?" she offered, "I only came with Athan because.. well.." She trailed off and glanced away from the other fairy as she thought of how she wanted to phrase exactly what it was she wanted to say, or if she really wanted to tell him.

"..because her bonded lives in another dimension," Athan explained with a smirk at the look Lorelei tossed him, "And she can't open a portal to and from Gaia." The man paused for a moment as he took another sip of his coffee. "Unless she's withholding that information, that is." He eyed his fairy warily for a moment, but he wouldn't truly be upset with her if she were keeping that secret to herself.

"I can't open portals," she informed him as she snapped out her wings a bit in a visible tick of irritation. "Can you do anything like that?" she asked as she glanced towards Raphael with a look of curiosity as her anger faded as she averted her attention away from her bonded.

Magiale
Raphael's wings relaxed slightly at Lorelei's response to his question, though his eyes widened at the mention of different dimensions. He appeared to have been completely oblivious to the smirk and look passed between the two.
"I - wow, that's - Portals? I - what are those?" he asked in a bit of a jumble, not particularly coherent. The idea of dimensions sounded familiar, however, and his natural curiosity began to perk a bit.

Reyna Crelos
Lorelei scoot towards the edge of the table so she could swing her legs back and forth. She smiled over at Raphael, amused by his curiosity, but didn't bother to answer. She really didn't know the technical aspects to how Athan travelled two and from Gaia on a regular basis, though now she was curious herself. Perhaps she would make an attempt to wring info from Athan later on.

"Well," Athan spoke up as he realized that his Feien wasn't going to speak up, "The sort I'm referring to are magically constructed and allow a person to travel to different realms or worlds. Fascinating stuff, really."

Magiale
Raphael agreed, settling down to sit down himself, though crosslegged and nowhere near the edge, though actually it was only a few inches away. Partly it was to keep himself from getting too tired, but it was also because standing might command too much attention to himself, since Lorelei wasn't upright anymore.
As for Athan's words, he only vaguely understood what he was talking about, but smiled all the same.
"It does sound fascinating. You live in...another world? What is that like?"
That question, Raphael realized with an inward grimace, was one of those ones that he couldn't quite decide was polite or not. He fidgeted again, twiddling his thumbs as he spoke.

Reyna Crelos
"It's a lot like Gaia but with a lot less people," Lorelei answered, deciding to volunteer a bit of information. She'd discovered that when she'd briefly skittered outside to peek around the house. There wasn't much to see. Nothing but a few sparse trees and grassy land as far as the eye could see, and in the middle of it all was Athan's house. It was safe to say the man appreciated his privacy. There was no one to bother him for miles.

Athan merely nodded in response, quietly agreeing with his Feien as he downed the last of his coffee.

Magiale
"There are a lot of people in Gaia," he agreed. Even though he had only ventured out of the home so many times, the times he had ventured out he had always seen plenty of people, out and about.
The kitchen seemed oddly dark, despite being lit. Raphael frowned and stood up, even though he hadn't been sitting very long at all.
"I'm terribly sorry, but it was nice meeting you both, both of you," he said, flustered.
"I - I, well, I think I should - well, it was, maybe we'll meet again, or hopefully - "
He gave up and settled with a blush and a smile, and went into the air to leave.

Raphael smiled at the falling snowflakes. Ah, it was really winter now.
Magiale was in the yard, picking up her sleeping bag and shaking it of the snow. She was grumbling. Raphael came over curiously, looking at the way the tent was now covered in snow.

"Honestly, Raphael, can you believe this? Those weathermen are always wrong."
She scowled and trudged back to the house, where she tossed the sleeping bag to the floor to dry. Then she went back to the snow covered tent and rescued her chocolate.

"Mine." she mumbled at Raphael defensively, and then she shivered back to the house again. It wasn't any warmer than outside, Raphael noted, but at least it was dry.

"Would you like to play outside?" asked Magiale as she picked up todays newspaper and started the crossword puzzle.

Raphael turned towards the window to watch the snowflakes fall. He hadn't realized how much he had missed the snow, how much he had missed winter.

"I thought so," Magiale said with a sigh. She opened the door and gestured for Raphael to go outside, which he immediately did.

Had the snowflakes gotten smaller? Raphael frowned as he inspected one, though it floated away too quickly for him to know for sure. So he instead watched another snowflake, tracing it in the air until it fell into the mass of snow below. Smiling, Raphael followed the snowflake, landing in a soft, comfortably cold pile of fluffy snow.
It was freshly fallen snow, not yet turned gray or brown or yellow - just white. Peacefully, Raphael felt himself slip out of consciousness...

When he awoke again, he found he was surrounded in white. Pure white. Alarmed, Raphael scrambled out of the snow. He was covered in it. His hair and eyelashes had become dotted with icicles. He blinked at them, but the icicles seemed to like him too much, so he didn't try to disturb them again.

He slowly stood up on the snow and looked up at the sky. It was dark and gray, much darker than it had been when he had fallen asleep. He looked at the house behind him, and saw that the lights were all turned out, and that Magiale was nowhere to be seen.

So, he mused, he would have to stay outside for now. But that was alright, he'd always liked being outside. Perhaps he could get inside the shed again.
But just as he was about to stretch his wings, he heard a rustling sound nearby. He gave a start.
"Hello?" he called, his feeble voice barely audible even to his own ears.
There was no answer. He waited for a bit, in case they saw him, but whoever had rustled the bushes did not appear.

He frowned. Was it a ghost? He didn't exactly want to find out, so he immediately took for the shed, a giant triangular mound covered completely with snow. The door was not completely closed, and though he was no longer a tiny juvenile, he could still weasel himself into the building with relative ease.

Raphael was silently watching the rain, his legs crossed and his hands on his knees. It had started raining earlier this morning, slowly and lightly, efficiently eating away at what was left of the snow. He was in his shed, peering through the crack in the door that had admitted him inside ten days earlier. Was it spring already? The snow had not even lasted two weeks.

He sighed and looked at the soaked papers of his journal that he had decided to take outside. The paint, luckily, appeared to be waterproof, but that still didn't allow him to write. He had tried writing in the snow, but that was now a futile effort, since the rain had washed his snow journal away before he could finger in two words.

There was a certain something gnawing in his head, making him want to fall asleep, though he wasn't sure what this certain something was. As far as he knew he had plenty of sleep, closing his eyes as the sun set and opening them as the sun rose. That was what Magiale said he should do, anyway.

The rain began to let up somewhat as the day progressed, though by then it was too late. Raphael slipped out of the shed. The snow still cushioned his feet comfortingly when he stepped out, though it was brittle snow, and seemed like it wouldn't last long, particularly as drops of water kept falling on it from somewhere above. A brown, wrinkled leaf was poking its way out of the dying snow nearby. Curious, Raphael stepped over to the leaf to take a look.

Just then, he heard a crash behind him and felt his back sprayed with flecks of icewater. He turned around in alarm, noticing a broken icicle laying where he had stood just a moment before. Had it fallen? Frowning slightly, Raphael looked up at the top of the shed. It was a long way up, and apparently it was where the steady dripping was coming from. One drip suddenly caught him full in the face. He shook his head and rubbed the water out of his eyes.

Another drop caught him in the arm. He liked the cold, but he was not sure he liked water so much as to enjoy being dripped on. So Raphael bent his knees and took off from the melting snow, enjoying the gentle rush of cold wind that met his take off. The wind was not as cold as it had been before.

Raphael turned midair and went for the roof of the shed, where he could now clearly see the icicles, or what was left of them, anyway. It seemed most of the water was coming from the rain, not the icicles. Most of them had fallen already.

"Raphael!" cried Magiale's voice from the house.
Raphael allowed himself to fall towards the house, catching himself with a stretching of his wings at the last second. Magiale blinked at him.
Raphael looked sheepish.

Magiale rolled her eyes at him and held out a cap of apple sauce.
"I made it myself! Be sure to tell me what you think!"

Raphael nodded and took the cap of applesauce from her. It was in a water-bottle cap, dark blue in color, a little wide but made easier to cary by the little ridges at the edges. It was a good bowl for a feien. Some applesauce spilled over the edges.

"Thank you," Raphael said with a smile. He turned to fly away.

"Come inside, Raphael!"

Raphael turned around and came inside.

"That's a good boy. Too gloomy outside, don't you think? But at least it's getting warmer!"

Raphael took a bite of the apple sauce.

Dear Diary,

I know I should be writing in these more often, but quite frankly, I haven't had the time. The parents cut my power before I could write anything. They could have at least given me a warning.
Allow me to explain.
Currently, diary, if you haven't noticed, this is not the Irving household. Apparently my mom decided that a house that she only spends three months in is not a house worth paying taxes for. Funny that she just decided that now. Must have something to do with real estate.
We packed out just moments before this weird lady put a "For Sale" sign up front. I'm sure she'll have plenty of luck selling the place, ha. Mom will have to bring herself over there to clean it, 'cause I'm certainly not.
John offered to let Raph and me room at her apartment. I haven't seen Aramis and Simara in ages, so I just hope they won't try to come back to my old address. That would give the new owners a nice surprise, if new owners even come. John's in college, but she's got a nice job. I'm going to get a job pretty soon, too, so I can pay half the rent. I doubt Mom would lend me any, though I suppose I could sucker Dad into something.
Anyway, I'm sleeping on the couch, which is fine with me, 'til we can get a futon or something, or maybe I can get my apartment. We had to drive out to the city to get here. I think Raphael was a little sick, but he got over it pretty quick. We didn't have very much to pack. Raphael has his old crate settled in the empty space between the couch and inner most wall. There was a lot of stuff in that basement Raph was in, but I think that Mom had someone move it out into storage or something.
Yeah. Certainly a nice way to spend the first part of the new year.
I celebrated New Years at home this year, at least. Raph and me had nice little mini party, and we made wishes when the clock struck midnight. I kinda wonder what Raphael would wish for. We also came up with New Year's resolutions. Those were fun. Raphael didn't know what his goal should be, so I decided he should talk to someone new every month. I'm not quite sure if he understood me, but it's a good goal. I hope he tries.
Anyway, John's come in. She's really hit it off with Raphael, I think, after she got over the "little naked man with wings" thing. We're probably going to eat Chinese or something. Neither of us can cook that well.

"Hey, Raphael, I dropped a needle. Could you find it for me?"

Raphael looked up from the Cosmopolitan magazine he stood on.

"Where'd you drop it?" asked Magiale curiously. She sat on the floor between the coffee table and the ten year old television, completing a crossword puzzle with the aid of a magnifying glass.

"Near to the couch, I think," replied John. She had an old sewing kit out and was trying to fix up a pair of jeans. "That was my last needle. I keep dropping them..."

Magiale rolled her eyes and went back to her puzzle.

Raphael flew over from his magazine and hovered before John, expectantly.

"I think it should be around here - " John pointed to the area near where she was sitting. The carpet was bumpy and light colored, with suspicious looking stains and hairballs and plastics here and there. Naturally, a needle could be more easily found in a haystack.

Raphael fluttered down to floor level and looked around. He knew something about what needles looked like, because he'd seen one before, back at the old Feien shop.

The fibers of the carpet were large and tangled. Raphael knew by now that the safest thing to do was stay off the carpet, because it was easy to get a foot stuck. So, he hovered slightly above the carpet, looking for a glimmer of something shiny.

He found something almost immediately. It was under the couch, and it shone silver where small specks of light struck it. He went to look at it.
It was a quarter. John wasn't looking for a quarter. Nonetheless, he carefully removed the object from the carpet, fluttering out to place it on the coffeetable. Then he returned to looking for the needle.

John grinned at the fairy.
"Look at that, Magiale! This guy is pretty useful." She held up the quarter. Magiale, who couldn't see the quarter, ignored John and went back to her crossword puzzle. Of course Raphael was useful. She knew this already.

Raphael found himself going increasingly farther beneath the couch. The light faded as he went, to the point where he had to reach his hands out and feel for things.

The carpet was coarse and wiry beneath his fingers. But then he felt something that was smooth and crinkly. Paper?
He decided to take this as well. It was a full sheet of 8x11 paper, and he had to fly backwards to drag it out.

John looked at the sheet.
"What's - Oh!"
She snatched it from Raphael, folded it up, and crammed it in her pocket. Raphael looked at her curiously.
"You don't have to take anything else out," John suggested, "I'm sure the needle didn't fall too far beneath the couch. It's probably out here somewhere." She pointed to the ground where her feet had been resting before.

Raphael nodded and looked. He hoped he wasn't taking too long!
After a few minutes, Raphael noted a thin, shiny object next to one of the coffeetable legs. He reached his hand into the crevice and pulled out...two needles. Pleased, he flew up and put both of them on the table.

"Awesome!" said John, "thanks a bunch!"
Raphael blushed and nodded, and went back to his Cosmopolitan magazine. John took one of the needles and threaded it. And Magiale, sitting as she was next to the TV, suddenly sat straight and still - and collapsed on the floor, tearing off her gigantic glasses and pulling at her hair.

"Magiale!"
PostPosted: Tue Feb 28, 2006 11:30 pm

Magiale blinked blearily and slowly opened her eyes. She had to squint to adjust to the light.
"Hey, Raph, I think she finally came to."
A yellow figure came into her vision. She blinked some more. It took her a few moments before she realized who it was.
"Raphael?" she said, or rather, croaked. Her throat felt unbelievably dry.
"Have some water," said another voice. This one was her mother. Magiale stiffened, despite herself.
"None of that, now," said Mom, still dark and pretty despite her age. She took a cup, filled it, and handed it over.
"You've been out of it for awhile," said John. She was sitting on a chair in a corner. The room was painted grey, from what she could see, and the furniture was mahogany.
"Where am I?"
"This is our summer home, don't you recognize it?"
Magiale blinked again.
"It looks a little different."
"Obviously it would," Mom said with a laugh, "since you're not half blind anymore."
Magiale looked at her strangely. And then it hit home. She felt at her face...and at her head.
"My ears!" she exclaimed.
"And your hair," said Mom. She pulled out a makeup mirror that she had apparently been saving for this moment, and gave it to Magiale, who took it with shaky fingers.
She had changed.
"What...but why? How?"
"Your curse had a limit, apparently. It was scheduled to disappear after 17 years."
"But...my 17th birthday was two months ago..."
Magiale's mom smiled slightly.
"You were cursed in Febuary."
Magiale shook her head, thoroughly confused.
Raphael flew down and patted her forehead.
"Ha, Raph. I can see you clearly now."
He smiled.
"You slept a long time."
Magiale's brow furrowed slightly.
"How long?"
"Three days," he said.

"Oh dear," she said, after a pause.
It was funny. She felt deaf, and she felt as if there was something clogging up her nose. But her eyes - it was a wonderful thing, to be able to see clearly.

Dear Diary,
Okay, so I finally got a job. Yay! I'm working at...Mcdonalds, though. Kinda stinks. Literally. I don't know if I can stand so much grease in one place.
Anyway, apparently employers are now preferring old retirees to teenagers. What's up with that? Apparently we don't have enough work ethic or something. Whatever.
Raphael's been mostly staying here at John's place. I think he might have gone out a couple of times, but I haven't been keeping much track, I'm afraid. He's such an independent guy, I think. He's in his crate right now. He's shown an unusual interest in architecture, which I think is weird. Is he planning on building his own house or something? Bleh. I don't know a thing about house building, though, and John's in economics or something so the most she knows is some weird stuff about real estate.
Speaking of college, my parents are getting on my back about it. I'm not smart, though, so I don't know what they expect me to do. John says I should get into the social sciences - probably just so she can talk to me about how messed up the economy is, or something. I dunno. Mom wants me to get into medical science. Come to think of it, can feien go to college? They should have a college of some kind, I think. They have brains too, don't they? Humans shouldn't be the only ones who have to suffer through school. Boo. I wonder if I could get Raphael to do my homework for me. His writing's a bit small though. I suppose I could teach him how to type.
Anyway, I'm going to go running now. And then take a shower. That sounds good. John's...partying, or something.
