If any of his attitude bothered her, Serafima gave no sign and merely chuckled lowly, the sound velvety and feminine. Lifting her napkin from her lap, she neatly laid it on the table. "I see. A born elitist? You must have been fascinating in your previous life," she replied. "No wonder you jib at being assigned to locating some tiny missing creatures, sentient enough to care for themselves... Though they have that awkward trait of needing to share life force. Certainly a draw-back for long, solitary lives." Her palms rested lightly on the table in preparation to pushing out her chair and she looked at him expectantly.

"I don't know how you put up with them," Autry said flatly, resting his chin in his palm and looking at her with wryly hooded eyes. "I don't care what Central says, I just don't see how they can make any useful contributions to our world and society. They don't have our size, they don't have our experience, and what I've seen of their magic isn't very impressive."
He could have droned on but the waiter returned with the receipt. Autry left a tip with a few too many digits. It was sure to draw attention to their charade for weeks to come and neither Autry nor Serafima would be able to come to the restaurant again for months. With a renegade flourish, he signed the words "Edward Norton." It was nothing like the real Mr. Norton's signature. Some waitress would save the carbon and later be very disappointed when her little trophy turned out to be a fraud. "But," she would insist, "it was really him! Who else would have left a tip that big but a movie star?"
Not Autry's concern. With a bit of a slimy smile he slid out of the booth and held a hand out for Serafima. "Shall we be off, Catherine?"

"Very ready, Ed." She placed her hand in his and allowed him to bring her to her feet. Her hand remained in his for a few moments before she smiled, withdrew it, and held her arm out with a faint wink. Clearly, Edward Norton was to escort his good friend out like the lady she was. "And I can't much see the importance myself but they -can- be quite amusing little creatures. Galatea is very intelligent and enjoys learning. Receptive, too. Knows when to speak and when to be absent."

"Then you're a lucky one," said Autry. "My roommate's feien never figured out the latter." He probably had not intended to use the term feien, as he was rather fond of calling the fairies any number of derogatory names, but the proper word slipped out unbidden as he rather deliberately hooked his arm around Serafima's.

"I suppose it all depends." She allowed him to lead her out the door, reflecting that it -had- indeed been a nice meal. It was nice to be with someone Fleet-like again. Even if they clearly were not happy with the Fleet. "Galatea and her friend Hadrian might very well be the only polite, intelligent ones out there. I have no idea. I haven't met many."

"Being away from the Fleet has many advantages," intoned Autry solemnly as they headed out the door an onto the busy Gaian streets. It was dark now, but the streets were well-lit and safe in this area. Autry frowned. "I'm not sure I remember the way back."
He could have used his locator. They both knew he had one to get back to the Fleet. Instead he chose to let Serafima take command. She could send him off with directions if she wanted, or take him back to her home.

"Turn right at the corner" came Serafima's low response and pressure on his arm from hers reinforced the words. "Are you to return to the Fleet tonight? Or are they keeping you on Gaia in quarters?"

Briefly, Autry smirked, but the smugness left his face almost instantly. "I'm supposed to head back, but it's an open assignment." Meaning he could stay if he chose, but if he did it was on his own liability. Since he had the credit card (which was a bit mystifying given his low rank) he could also ring up quite a hotel tab if he felt like it.

"I see." Her answering smirk was masked by the darkness and the slight turn of her head as she twisted to glance at a street sign. "I have a guest room if you wish to use it."

This time, the smile was genuine. "If it's no trouble," said Autry, practically purring with delight. "The barracks may be comfortable, but they just don't compare with real windows and sunlight." And a red bed, and real company in that real bed, but that was a bridge to be crossed later. For now, they were merely a pair of individuals linked arm in arm walking down a street at night.

"None at all. I'll be sure to tell Galatea to give you peace and privacy, too." Serafima shifted her arm against his until her hand could just touch the palm of his hand for a moment as if calling to his attention. Then she returned to the polite positioning once more. "Seeing as how you don't approve of feien."

His elbow brushed against her ribs, perilously close to something else. "I simply prefer more... engaging company," said Autry. That could have been an innocent enough statement. It wasn't.

Serafima smirked and this time he saw it in the glare of a streetlight as they passed. "Do you really mean engaging or should you have said mature?" she asked dryly. "Because I have a feeling that I would not approve of the things you might talk to Galatea about. Technically speaking, she is only a child yet."

"I definitely meant engaging," said Autry smugly. "And children shouldn't be seen or heard when engaging company is around." He looked at Sera, daring twinkle in his eye, lips quirking up at the corners, his arm snug around hers.

"You certainly have very definite ideas about things, Ed," she murmured, amused. Before she could say anything else, however, Serafima looked up to see the end of her front walk. "Ah. Here we are," she declared. "Would you want a nightcap or tea before I show you to the guest room?"
