CartoonKid: You can create avatar edits with almost any graphics program. ^^ As long as you have Pencil/Pen/Airbrush tools that can go as small as one pixel, the ability to choose any color you want, and a layers feature, you can create edits the same way that I do. ^^ You don't need PhotoShop.
You might want to go to the Guilds homepage and then do a search for "avatar edit." You should be able to find the Avatar Editors Guild, where they have a resource link list as well as a critique/help thread.

I have Paint Shop Pro 9 and Adobe 7.0.
I never use adobe because I can never find the pencil tool. I can find the paintbrush/airbrush but thats about it. I was also surprised that I could not find a "paint bucket" tool in adobe either.
I just now opened adobe to find the pencil tool and I still cant locate it. Maybe I am overlooking something simple?

Paint Shop Pro, turn it to 1 and it should act like a pencil tool.

Sashanaru: Adobe what? :3 Illustrator? PhotoShop? ImageReady?
In my version of PhotoShop, some tools share a button. So if you've clicked on the Paintbrush button and want to switch to Pencil, you'd have to click and hold down the Paintbrush button until it coughed up a sub-menu from which you could pick Paintbrush or Pencil.

Meri, if you have the time could you look at this? I'm trying to figure out how to do patterned items but still have the realistic type effect of a flowing skirt. Its not too full, but full enough that there would be ripples. Any tips on how I can accomplish that?

Take a gander at my mix-and-match wedding set. Even the smooth slashed skirt has shading on it. Basically I just shade the sides and highlight the front. As for slight hills and valleys in the clothing, I shade them about the same as I do a deep wrinkle. I just don't make the shadows as dark/sharp. Depending on how the fabric ripples, you may want to scallop or wave the bottom edge of the skirt as well.

About photoshopMeriko I think the last time I checked it was about $700. May I suggest as an alternative photoshp elements -it's around $100 dollars. The only thing that I've really missed in comparison to the full version is the lack of the pen tool. According to Meriko's tutorial you don't really use that for this anyway. I also enjoy that fact that it loads up faster than the full version. Thanks for the wonderful tutorial Meriko. It's fascinating!
