Kaveri laughed herself, she knew that while she was rather padded in terms of weight and could pack a hell of a punch, she couldn't take out anyone that was armed. She's tried that many times before and got arrested for it. "Forty-one, yeah? Huh... I think that means we're next-door to each other. Kind of. Diagonally, anyways," the vulture-woman grinned. "I'm in forty-four, upstairs. As far as I know, nobody's living below me. That's probably a good sign as any that they're not going to take any more people... but if that were the case, I'd be living in just one house, not a duplex, right?"
The reference to the panda goes over her head, as she had yet to meet Nita -- it was rather embarassing of her to go so long without meeting her neighbours, but she had been rather introverted lately... especially since her transformation, and even moreso after the Aubrey incident. "Man, I feel so lame for having not introduced myself to you or... the panda... earlier. I usually don't forget about stuff like neigbours, and we probably should all probably stick together and keep some semblance of a community in this awful place."
She smiled, giving a light shrug. "I guess it's easy for me to forget things like that sometimes. Most of the time I'm just hanging out back digging around with my vegetables... I've been trying to get them back in order. They got pretty trashed when I left for a little while."

Alec pondered the thought of more newcomers arriving. If there was a vacant lot beneath Kaveri, what was to stop them from bringing in someone else? "It'd be weh'd, seeing some'un, ye know.... no' lack us. No' changed." He wrinkled his nose at the thougt before heeving a sigh.
"Ah, d'n worreh abou' i'." He chuckled and waved his hand when she mentioned how weird she felt not knowing her neighbors. "A' wandeh a lo' bu' a' still manage t' miss a' lo' o' pehple." Smirking again, he motioned to the vulture lady as an example. "If ye eveh need anehthin, jus' knock!" He figured he might as well extend the welcome now. She seemed pretty nice, this lady. "Jus' yanno... knock loud. M'music's on loud." Laughing, he slowed his pace. "Ye go' a garden? Thas cool." Garden tool. Now it made sense.

"I was one of those not long ago," Kaveri mused, remembering just how clueless she was when she first arrived here. If she could, she would go back in time and punch herself in the face for ever believing the story she was told to lure her here. "This s**t -- the neck, the claws -- all recent developments. Probably... hell, two weeks ago?" She shrugged. "I lost track. It was right before this whole goddamn mess started."
"Ah, music," the vulture-woman said wistfully, "I love music. All kinds of music. Makes me wish my fingers weren't all ******** up like this so I could play my banjo again. I can still kinda play, but it's all clumsy and awkward and playing's hard." She looks down at her hand, wiggling the two fused-together fingers. "And in some cruel twist, I bet once I re-learn to play, I'll be losing even more fingers or something. I don't know. I don't even know what the ******** I'm becoming, and honestly, I couldn't care to figure out what it is. ******** those doctors."
"Yeah, it's small -- but I don't trust anything out of the cafeteria, so I make my own food," she nods in response to the comment about the garden. "My crop's a little thrashed now, but I usually have stuff like carrots, tomatoes, lettuce... and broccoli." She laughed, putting her hand back in her pocket and hooking her thumbs in the belt-loops. "I wish I had the foresight to bring my own pot seeds, if I'd known it was allowed here."
But Billy was growing pot, so she wouldn't have to rely on the labs anymore for that. And that reminded her, she should check on how he's doing. She hasn't seen him since she invaded his garden before she changed.

Alec was about to get excited, hearing that Kaveri was musically inclined, until he realized her instrument of choice. Holding back the urge to laugh immaturely, he simply moved on. "Ye, a' changed a' couple o' weeks ago meself." He muttered, still scratching at the grey skin behind his neck. It was feeling dry and raw, maybe he'd gotten sunburnt or something. "A think is somesorta shawk." Shrugging placidly, he turned his head towards Kaveri and curled his lips to point at the sharp protrusions as somesort of proof. "Hawd t'say." Suddenly reminded of the baffling texture of his joints, he scratched at the brown and barky skin subconsciously.
"Fair play." The teen nodded approvingly at her attempt at independance, the idea of them lacing the food never really occurring to him. Then again, until recently he'd never thought the staff to be that malicious. He looked at her again and laughed when she mentioned growing pot. This girlie was turning out to be barrels of fun.

"You too, huh? I sympathize," Kaveri said, "It seems a lot of people have changed lately. A couple of my friends -- the one you just saw being carted off to the big house -- have changed within the last week or two. It's like a contagious rash." She makes a mock-itching motion, careful not to cut herself on her own talons.
"I dunno," she looked over Alec, wondering what he could possibly be turning into. "It's hard to tell at this point. And as for me, no animal I know looks like this. I seriously wonder what the ******** up with this neck."
She grinned and reached up to pretend to strangle herself as she walked, making gurgling noises as her head swung back and forth. "This ******** thing, I tell you. It makes me look like a living funhouse mirror reflection." The woman laughed, cricking her neck and holding it at a comfortable straightness again.

Alec watched Kaveri and laughed, finding it refreshing for something to make fun of their changes, no matter how drastic they seemed. "Ye don' look too bad." He reassured with a smile but continued to laugh at her antics. "A' fookin hope is no' c'ntagious. Th' girl above me changed joost before me too."
Glancing up, he realized he was just where he had intended to go as he stared at the familiar duplexes. "Guess this is me stop." He scoffed and offered Kaveri a wave. "A' think imma take a showeh. Ma skin's itchin lack hell. See ye 'round, aye? D'n be a strangeh."

"I guess it coulda been worse, but lemme tell you -- when it happened, it hurt like hell," Kaveri shrugged, "hopefully that'll be the worst of it and whatever else is to come is a much easier ride."
She curled her lip at the mention of the other neighbour changing. Was there something in the water?
"Well, it was nice meeting ya," she waved back, going to climb the stairs to her own duplex. She had that Garuda mask she was working on, as well as her protest sign that needed to get started after this little incident with Zach. "Seeya, dude. Take it easy, don't let the man keep ya down, alright? You have a nice evening."
And with that, she disappeared behind the door of duplex 44.

(( NEW RP ))
It was only after Josh had unpacked and organized his duplex - entirely - that he decided to leave in search of those pain killers Sabin had told him about for his arm. He left, making sure to lock his door, and walked towards what he hoped was the town center. If not, he would just have to wander the 'village' a little more until he found it. Either way, it would be a nice walk, and he wanted to look around his new home anyway.
The 'village' seemed like a cozy place, if not a little too uniform, with all the buildings looking alike. Even so, that didn't bother him.
Luckily he was able to find the town center without too much trouble, getting some asprin to take with him back to his duplex. He read over the label as he walked away, and placed the bottle into his pocket. Now he just wondered where would he go to find some new reading material. Surely there was a library of some sort around here somewhere, right?

Kaveri usually had no reason to be in the center of the village, often finding solace in the garden behind her duplex or inside painting her mask. But today she decided to head to the cafeteria, especially upon realizing there being free clothing, so she emerged out with a small stack of pants and shirts over her shoulder and a tofu sandwich in her hand.
As she started to make her way back home, she spotted an unfamiliar figure -- most likely one of many, although from the back he looked rather... un-changed. The vulture-woman hesitated, taking a small bite out of her sandwich as she looked on, taking a cautious step forward and closer to the man. No tail, no signs of pointed ears, from the back, he looked completely normal!
"Er... Hey! You new here?"

Josh stopped when he heard someone call out to him, and he turned around to greet the woman. "Yes, I just arrived not long ago, I'm Profe..." he began to introduce himself, but trailed off when he finally got a good look at the woman.
Oh my God.
What was wrong with her neck?
He knew he was being rude, staring at her with a slightly horrified expression on his face. And it didn't apprear that he neck was the only thing strange about her - his eyes travelled down to see her clawed, greyish looking hands as well.
Joshua couldn't think of a thing on Earth that would cause this to happen to a person. And she was a person - right? He opened his mouth to speak, but nothing came out at first. He cleared his throat, and tried again.
"Are you - I mean - I... your neck... I don't mean to stare, I apologize, but - are you alright!?" Yes, there was a hint of panic in his voice. He was sure there were a million other things he could have said, but he certainly couldn't think of them. What were you supposed to say when a woman with an unaturally long neck spoke to you? Surely that wasn't... normal.

Kaveri cocked her head to the side, leaning it at an angle that would be impossible for most humans. She was used to the reactions her neck got by now, and gave a small, helpless shrug aided with a smile.
"I'm fine. It hurt when it first happened, but I'm getting used to it." She chuckled and waved her hand dismissively, and it hadn't occured to her yet that this poor guy had yet to, uh, discover the 'wonders' of this island. The fact that she's so casual about talking about her transformation could even be rather unnerving -- it was almost like she was talking about a new tattoo or piercing. She didn't think there would be anyone new on the island so soon after the last mess...
Kaveri straightens her neck back up, rolling her shoulders, chewing on the inside stud of her labret as she thought about what to say next. Maybe she could divert attention away from her neck! "So, what are you in here for?"

When it happened? Okay, so that ruled out a birth defect. But how could something like that have happened in the first place? And even if it were from an accident, would it even be possible to move it around so well? He couldn't wrap his mind around what he was seeing, trying to think up explanation after explanation, but none of them making any sense whatsoever.
His thoughts were interrupted when she asked him a question.
"What? Oh - oh, yes. I... I'm a teacher here. Professor Rivers. Are you, ah, a student?" Yes, a change of subject is good right now. Just... don't look at her neck. Easier said than done.

"A teacher?" Kaveri parroted, smirking with mild amusement. Did Moreau think he could round up his lovely experiments and have this man try to teach them to be human again despite their animal instincts? The mental image of hideous animal-men shoved into those little plastic desks made Kaveri giggle, reaching up to cover her mouth. The poor man looked so uneasy, she thought to cheer him up with dumb humor (and still under the assumption that he knew what was going on here).
"So, ah, what subject do you teach? Anthropology? Humanity 101?" Kaveri asked, then tried not to laugh again when Joshua thought she was a student. Did she really look that young? "I dropped out of high school years ago and couldn't afford to go to Evergreen. Can't say I'm a student."

"Ah, well, I majored in English Literature... I haven't revieced my teaching schedule quite yet. Dr. Duvert explained that I have a week to get to know the place and meet the other people on the island, before I will get my schedule. I believe he is the anthropology teacher here, is that right?"
Dropped out of high school? He frowned a little, wondering why anyone would want to drop out of high school and try and get into Evergreen, of all palces. She couldn't be a teacher, then - could she? Perhaps that was why Joshua was accepted - the teaching standards here might very well be low. Which he didn't agree with, as he was fairly sure he wasn't a bad teacher.
"Are you a teacher, then?"

Kaveri thrummed with mild interest as she took a bite out of her sandwich. "They're planning on putting a school here?" The vulture looked curious and amused, evident by the smirk tugging at her lips. "Sabin, apparently, is a man of many professions and many stories. I'm sure you've already heard things from the other islanders..?"
When asked if she was a teacher, Kaveri snorted. "Oh, not really... but if you asked me how to garden or something, I could probably help out with that. I know how to grow nice healthy organic vegetables without the use of pesticides..."
"Most of the things I know are skills that can't be taught, you kinda have to learn them on your own." She smiled and shrugged, absently patting the folded clothes thrown over her shoulder.
