Trying Not to Pick Sides After a long night of fitful sleep plagued by unpleasant dreams and waking moments marred with homesickness, Fiona had spent several hours in her room before, around noontime, succumbing to the need for food. She was visibly dissheveled, although her attidude still showed loudly in the strength of her shoulders, the sway of her feet, and the strength hidden in her eyes. Recovering from the past few unpleasant evenings, she had hurried to her food and then began to pursue something rather different. The girl spared hardly a glance around for witnesses (just the cafeteria lady, but she was always there) before heading to the cutlery trays. The tray balanced between a hand and her hip loaded with a salad and a plateful of various raw vegetables, Fiona carefully selected utensils that did not seem to suit her meal in the slightest. Serrated steak knifes of varying sizes and sharpness seemed to most catch her eye, and these she was in the process of pilfering away into bundles of napkins. She was, all in all, consumed with her work and oblivious to most else.Nita, on the other hand, had slept very well, curled up with Lauren. She had slept in, finally awakened by the growling of her stomach. After showering quickly and leaving a brief note for Lauren, Nita made her way to the cafeteria. Spying Fiona, she filled her tray and sat down. She cast a wary glance at all the knives and raised her eyebrows at the girl. When at last she was satisfied with her stash of dangerous weaponry, Fiona tucked it all under her arm, took her tray in both hands, and went to sit down. It was then that she noticed Nita (had she been there the whole time? It was like she'd suddenly appeared!) and went over to join her. "Hey!" Fee said cheerfully, much like someone who had not in fact stored away steak knives for safekeeping. "I haven't seen you since-" she stopped. "Yeah. Anyways. The way that ended really sucked. Oh well, remember my mistakes and move on, eh? So what have you been up to?" For whatever reason, the dark circles and rumpled state of her hair didn't really match her chipper tone of voice.Nita took a bite of her sandwich, waiting for Fiona to realize she had company. Or a witness? "Afternoon, Sunshine," she said, noting the disparity between Fee's appearance and her apparent mood. "Hm, yeah, that was an.. interesting night," Nita said carefully. Although the night before had been even more interesting... "Eh, not much. Reading and stuff. I finally got bookshelves in my duplex. Apparently they forgot to put them in mine, so all my books were on the floor." She trailed off, realizing she was babbling, and took another few bites of sandwich. "That sucks," she said, realising too late she had neglected to find a fork to eat her salad with. Oh well. Instead she procured a stick of celery and began munching on it between sentences. "So you're a big reader, then? I never really did a lot of reading- I get distracted too easily. Except when I was little, apparently, I liked it when people read stories to me." Fiona got comfortable in her seat, leaning back precariously on two chair legs. "I hate those books in school you have to read for ISUs, and then write an essay about. Presentations I can do just fine- essays not so much.""Need a fork?" Nita asked, pushing hers across the table. "I picked one up automatically but I don't really need it." She nodded, resisting the temptation to tell Fiona she'd fall if she wasn't careful. "I grew up with my dad reading to me, and I was an English major. Essays I can do, but I get nervous doing presentations." Nita grinned, knowing that Fiona didn't mind being in the spotlight. "Eh, well," she said with a shrug, accepting the fork gladly, "I like to talk. But I figure you already knew that, eh?" Fiona grinned broadly, digging into her salad. As she did so, the girl paused to comment, "Did you know that more than half of the fat people take in from salads is from the dressing? Those little packages you can get are like... pure fat. It's gross." She pulled a face, putting the shallow bowl onto her lap in order to tilt onto only one chair leg, keeping herself up by counter-balancing her weight with her knee underneath the table. It was a miracle she was still alive, because there was a certain natural, unconcious air about the way she did it that implied the girl sat this way most of her lifetime.Nita snickered. "No, really? I'd never noticed," she said drily. "Aww, but I like my ranch dressing." Nita made a fake pouty face. "And I put egg and cheese on my salads, too. Doesn't seem to have affected me too poorly." She looked down at her (mostly nonexistant) breasts and thin waist. Fiona's method of sitting (used loosely) made Nita nervous, and she opened and closed her mouth a few times, deliberating. "Ya know, if you fall over, I'll help you up, but I'm gonna have to laugh at you," she said solemnly, although a tiny smile lurked around the corners of her lips. Fiona snickered, her expression brightening. "I'm good for a bit. When my legs get tired I'll go back to sitting the boring way. Just look out when I'm really excited or really bored, sometimes I try to spin myself on one leg of the chair. Sometimes it works, and sometimes I end up with a chair leg up my nose and my arms bent backwards." She smirked.
"It's fine to eat fatty junk if you get it off later. But people who sit around all day and watch T.V. are just gonna get fat. Then they're all 'I'm eating a salad so that's healthy! Yay me!' but then slather it with dressing. Everyone's a hypocrite.""Oh that sounds pleasant," Nita giggled, absently wondering if chair legs up her nose might explain some of Fee's insanity. Not in a bad way, of course, but it was an amusing thought. "Or like people who drive through McDonald's, get a large fries and a Big Mac, and a Diet Coke." She grinned guiltily. "Although I do drink diet soda, so I guess I'm not one to talk." Nita eyed the napkin full of knives again, not sure if she really wanted to ask, but... "So what have you been up to?" she asked, a bit warily. "Not all that much, actually. Hanging out in my room, chatting with Annie, eating, sleeping. I'm kind of mad at myself for being such a baby about the whole party thing." Fiona bristled. "But damn, I wish people like Awen and Lauren would just shut up. It was my freaking party. I should have just kicked them out before something like that could happen."Nita nodded, her own time being spent pretty much the same way, although she had also been out and about a fair bit. "I dunno, it was pretty fun, other than that last little bit. 'I Never' is an amusing game, although I got thirsty." Nita made a self-deprecating face. "Seems there's a lot I've never done." She frowned when Fee mentioned kicking Awen and Lauren out. "I dunno, they're not so bad. I mean, they have their reasons for what they said..." Her voice trailed off, not particularly wanting to mention how she knew that. Fiona scoffed openly, her mind not really registering that Nita was defending them. "Reasons? Like what, being completely smashed?" She frowned, tilting back and forth on her chair. "Well Lauren isn't free from that excuse. You know the first time I met her, and remember that she was completely sober, she like, attacked me. Seriously. Claws and fangs and animal-like-s**t. All I did was say how it was ******** up that people were tricked and kidnapped and how the scientists were all messed up in the head!" She paused, "Which I seriously thought would be the general agreement around here. Considering we're all turning into freaking animals."Nita bit her lip, not wanting to make excuses for Lauren, but also unwilling to let her be attacked, however vicariously. "Look, hey, I don't like this either. D'you think I really want to be here for the rest of my life, being turned into a red panda? But," she paused a moment, thinking out her wording. "For some people.. it really is better here." She sighed, hoping Fiona would be willing to hear her out at least. Her expression became solemn and the front of her seat came down for a gentle landing so that she could lean across the table a little. "That doesn't make it right." This seemed to be enough of a defense for Fiona's opinion, and so she fell silent as she finished up her salad and began to gnaw thoughtfully on the end of a carrot. After a moment, she said, "And that doesn't change the fact that she freaking attacked me. I don't like her."Nita sighed again, although some very irrelevant part of her was relieved that Fiona wasn't sitting so precariously. "I know it's not right, and it's certainly not legal. If it were, it would be publicized, and maybe people could volunteer instead of being tricked or whatever." She tucked her feet up, Indian style, which was more comfortable for her. "I'm sorry she attacked you, and it seems the feeling is mutual; she doesn't like you either. But it still doesn't give you the right to talk s**t about her, or say that she's crazy. That's not right either." Nita bit her lip to keep from saying too much more. So much for not taking sides... "Talk s**t?" She repeated incredulously. "If I randomly tried to bite you and rip your neck open for having an opinion, you'd think I was ******** bonkers, wouldn't you?" Fiona's temper began to become aroused, but more evident than that was the hurt expression that touched her face at being 'betrayed' by one of the few people she had come to trust.Nita put her head in her hands and shook her head slowly. This was not going well. "Fine," she shot back, "I'd think you were nuts. But maybe your opinions struck a little too close to home. Maybe you should try knowing people instead of just assuming they'll agree with you." Her brows knitted together, deliberately avoiding looking Fee in the face. Nita was anything but confrontational, and she really didn't feel like crying in the middle of the cafeteria. Fiona looked at her closely, shocked. "Maybe you're right. But normally some things are okay to assume. Like if I hit five people in the hand with a hammer without warning them or giving them a choice, would you expect any of them to like it?" But the fire had left her voice, and Fee sighed, turning her eyes away. "I can't... this is just... stupid."Nita almost laughed at that. "You're right," she said softly. "It is stupid, and I didn't mean to yell at you..." She stared at the crust of her sandwich, guiltily. "I guess we're both scared and frustrated... At least I am," she admitted, apparently fascinated by some crumbs on the table. "I'm not afraid of anything," she said in response, puffing up slightly but lacking her customary devilish grin. "But I get frustrated and sad and stuff just like everyone else." Fiona looked off into space across the cafeteria. "I miss my parents, my friends, my life. But I won't let that stop me from being who I am. From fighting against this in any way I can. I won't lose hope." A pause, and then she looked back at Nita. "But I don't want to lose any of the few friends I have here, either."Right. Fiona wasn't afraid, and Nita's name was Mud. All posing aside, the rest of what Fiona said seemed sincere. "I think," Nita said carefully, "There's more to it here than basic Right or Wrong, Black and White, etc. etc. We all have to deal with this crap our own way, and still find friends, even though we don't necessarily see eye-to-eye." Nita nodded slowly and attempted a smile. She finished off her carrot and stood suddenly, taking her bundle of napkins under her arm. "I'm going to go back to my room. I have some stuff I wanna do..." she paused, wondering if she should tell Nita. If she was friends with Lauren and Awen... probably not. Plus there was the matter of cameras in the cafeteria. A compulsive shudder ran down her spine. "I hate cameras so much thanks to this place," she mumbled to herself. "But... I think I'm gonna go.""I already hated cameras," Nita muttered. For her, it was the constant surveillance that was the most unnerving about the Island. She stood as well, figuring she wasn't going to eat the rest of her sandwich, which was a bit dry anyway. She should take something back to her duplex for Lauren, though, if she was still there. "I guess I'll see you around though, Fee." "Yeah," she mumbled, feeling the remainder of anger and surprise melt away, leaving the slightest bit of guilt. "I don't want to make you pick sides," she said quickly, "but I don't want you getting confused and thinking that I'm the bad guy." With that out of the way, Fiona was free to march out of the cafeteria, considering her concerns adressed. "I'll see you later," she called over her shoulder, and then went off in a direction away from the duplexes.Nita frowned slightly but nodded anyway. "Right," she said, as if she were trying to convince herself. She watched Fiona leave, and once she was safely out of sight, Nita put together a couple of sandwiches, grabbed a soda and various snack-foods for Lauren. Pushing away her own vague sense of guilt, Nita walked slowly back to her duplex.

Word Games and Real Names Nita MacNeal Nita just above the tideline on her towel, watching the water slowly creep up the beach as the sun set over the horizon. She had slept in again, and her afternoon had been fairly mundane. More and more she felt the need to be outside, and at twilight she didn't need to slather her fair skin with sunblock. Her toes dug themselves into the cooling sand, her chin rested on her knees. She was quiet, not even listening to music, only the call of birds over head and the far-off crashing of waves against the cliffs. Rex Vadnais As the sun set slowly over the horizon, Rex made his way down to the beach for an evening swim. He'd been restless since his change, slowly staying up later and later into the night, then he'd wake up much later than usual. Sleep was getting thrown off, not that it mattered.
He slipped his shirt off at the tree-line and dropped his towel down next to it. He couldn't wear too many shoes anymore, only sandals. He was about to take off jogging into the waves when he stumbled upon that red-head he'd met before. "Oh, hey Nita!" He said, not thinking twice about the fact that he hadn't hung out with anyone since his change. It had been a few days and he got used to them, they didn't bother him in the first place. However he didn't think about what other's would think of him now. Nita MacNeal Nita jerked around, more surprised at having her thoughts interrupted than by Rex's appearance. "Oh hey," she said, and then: "Oh!" Her eyes grew wide as she realized that Rex had.. had changed. This was the first time she'd seen any Islander after a transformation, emphasizing how drastically different someone could look after just a few days. "When did.." she began, waving a hand in his direction. No use in ignoring the white elephant (or.. lion) in the room. Or beach. Whatever. Nita turned to look at him more closely, indicating he could sit down if he wanted. Rex Vadnais Rex smiled and chuckled a bit, large fangs overlapping the rest of his teeth. He was going to ask her how she was doing before she stated her question. "It happened a few days ago... are they that bad?" He swished his tail and plopped in the sand next to her. he was perfectly comfortable discussing the subject, unlike most islanders. Nita MacNeal "N-no," Nita replied carefully. "Just different. Noticeable... but not bad." She nodded slowly, thinking. At least Rex wasn't supersensitive about his changes. It was actually a bit of a relief. "I asked the labs what I'm gonna be," she said rather suddenly. Rex Vadnais He blushed a bit, scratching at his new chinstrap beard absently. "Well, that's good." He kicked his feet out in the sand and took a long breath, he'd never realized how amazing the jungle's refreshing plants and flowers smelled.
Though his thoughts were shaken as she spoke, "You asked?" Rex leaned back in the sand and propped himself up on an elbow, looking at the girl. "Aaaand...?" Why hadn't he thought about flat out asking before his first change. Nita MacNeal "Yeah, I figured I'd prefer to know. I talked to a.. Dr. Duvert? Sounded French. Anyway, he told me I was the first person to ask in a long time. Before any changes, at least." Nita shrugged. She hadn't told anyone about her conversation with the labs yet, although she'd mentioned the animal to Fee, who hadn't seemed to notice. "Red panda," she said finally. It was still weird to have 'face', as it were, for the serum in her blood. "I have to admit, they're pretty cute." Nita laughed slightly, poking holes in the sand with one finger. Rex Vadnais "Dr. Duvert...? I don't know him, though I think I've heard the name before." He picked up some sand in his paw and watched it slowly run between his fingers, trickling away as easily as water. Though he was surprised to hear that she wasn't the only one who had the courage to ask.
His blue eyes creased in thought, digging through his mind for what a red panda looked like. Obviously Red... but... "Oh! A lesser panda? I like those little critters!" He wasn't sure how she was taking to the news and treaded lightly on the subject's discussion. He didn't want another Zach outbreak... "So, what do you think?" Rex stated vaguely, letting her guide the discussion where she was comfortable.
"Why do you think they chose that? Your hair maybe?" He asked, lifting a hand to motion to her long red braids. "I have no idea why I got a lion..." Nita MacNeal "He seemed okay. A bit creepy, but at least he was fairly straight with me." Nita bit her lip. She really wasn't sure what she thought. There were definitely worse things to be turned into... A brief image of Billy's tentacles slithered through her mind and she shuddered. "Red panda, lesser panda, Ailurus fulgens," Nita rattled off. "I did some research," she explained absently. "Are you kidding?" Nita asked. "It's a play on your name. Rex. King of the Jungle and all that." She couldn't help but giggle. Word-play was something she was good at, even under weird circumstances. And this was about the weirdest circumstance she could think of. Rex Vadnais Rex huffed a little laughed and did a similar rant, "The good ol' Lion, Panthera Leo. You're not the only one that's done a little research." Now that he was confident in the fact that he was a lion, over the past few days he'd spent some time reading up on them. They were actually quite interesting animals.
Then Rex stared off into space, she must have hit the nail on the head. "Wow.. I think you're right!" He laughed and blushed again, feeling a little stupid for not realizing it before. He never really related his name with the latin meaning since grade school. "Though I don't think they knew my rea-..." he stopped abruptly, dropping the sentence quickly, getting awfully close to revealing his name on accident again. Nita MacNeal Nita grinned, much more at ease with Rex than she had been the first time they met. Changes aside, he was a lot more normal than several of the others she'd run across. "Don't make me start singing stuff from The Lion King," she teased. She quirked a brow at him when he cut off so suddenly. "Your real name?" she guessed quietly. "Mine's Juanita, and I can't stand it. I mean, do I look like a Juanita?" She rolled her eyes, hoping that her rather cajoling tone would help Rex open up again. Rex Vadnais Rex pulled himself back to to a normal sitting position and watched the waves roll in, he felt like humming Dock of the Bay. It was an appropriate song for the moment, thats for sure. And Rex was glad that she was loosening up to him, he must have made a bad first impression when he met her on the beach a few weeks ago.
"Lion King?! By goly I haven't seen that movie in ages." He remembered the massive movie collection in the entertainment room. They were bound to have it, that movie was such a classic.
Then he looked down, sifting through the sand a bit quicker. "Yeah, my real name. Christian." He mumbled and turned red again, cutely embarassed about admitting it. Nita MacNeal Nita, on the other hand, was having a hard time not singing "In the Jungle"... Pumbaa and Timon-style. She sat crosslegged, alternately poking at the sand and at the hem of her pants. "I watched The Little Mermaid the other day," she grinned. "With Colche. Hadn't seen that since middle school, I think." The slender redhead watched Rex carefully. "Christian? That's not so bad. If I'd been a boy, my parents were gonna name me Parke. How awful is that? Lucky for my brother, they got past that by the time he arrived." Nita tugged absently on one of her braids. Rex Vadnais Rex gasped, "Colche!? How is she? Aww, I haven't seen her in so long... Maybe I could watch the movie with her, and you could join if you'd like!" He smiled an laughed, remembering his naked cheetah girl fondly.
"I didn't really know my mom long enough to ask her what I'd've been named f'I was a girl, plus it never really crossed my mind." Rex shrugged, "My dad could've cared less. Then I didn't have any other siblings... thank the lord, I'd hate to have more kids spawn from my parents." His sighed, the memories came back slowly but surely... Nita MacNeal "Oh, she's doing fine. She decided to call me Ariel." Nita giggled. "Would you be Simba? Or Mufasa? Anyway, she had a big birthday party the other day and was all dressed up like a princess." Nita frowned slightly and put a hand on Rex's forearm. "Hey," she said softly. "I didn't mean to bring back bad stuff..." Rex Vadnais "Ariel? Ooh, like the Little Mermaid." He laughed and reflected in the sand, "That's my Colche. At first she was pretty dang afraid of me, but I think she's lightened up to me now." He smiled, and averted his gaze to their touching hands. "Oh yeah, don't worry about it. I'm just... I... My parents..." He sighed and finished with untied ends, "Yeeeeaahhh..." Nita MacNeal "She's a sweet kid," Nita agreed. "It's kind of hard to imagine anyone not liking her." Nita shrugged and sat silently, a bit uncomfortable. She felt bad for Rex, and annoyed with herself for pressing the issue. Even if she really hadn't meant to upset him. "I'm sorry," she murmured, reclaiming her hand. Rex Vadnais "Really! It's no big deal. I can accept that they were pretty awful people, but y'know.. whats passed has passed." They needed a subject change as the very last sliver of the sun disappeared over the endless sea, though the light still shone orange in the sky. "Want to swim? The water takes longer to cool down than the sand so it'll feel nice and warm." Plus that was the whole reason he came to the beach, anyway. Nita MacNeal Nita frowned again, but nodded. If Rex was willing to change the subject, so was she. "Sure," she said. "I'm out here a lot at night, since it means I don't have to worry about getting sunburned. Nita held out her freckled arms, the undersides of which shone slightly in the last of the sunlight. "I'm a pale, pale little white girl." Nita pulled off her jeans, revealing the same rather dingy blue swimsuit. She had gotten a lot more use out of it in the past weeks than she'd expected. Rex Vadnais Rex crawled to his feet and chuckled, "I never really had that problem. Good genes I suppose..." He made a few steps towards the waters and said over his shoulder, "Plus I don't have the whole 'girl' thing either." He smiled and jogged into the waves, flipping like a whale's breach before splashing into the water, splashing at the shore to encourage Nita to come in. Nita MacNeal "I burn, and then I peel... and then I get more freckles." Nita snorted. "And no, you're definitely NOT a girl!" Nita waded in, relieved to find that the water was still pleasantly warm. She stopped when the water reached her thighs. "Just a warning," she called out. "I don't swim that well." Rex Vadnais He'd swam out into the deeper water and treaded idly over the slowly sighing waves."Don't worry about it. I dove off a darn ship to try and save Avery! Then I taught Colche how to swim, you'll be safe with me." He smiled and stroked back to where it was easier to stand, the water came up to his chest. His fur and hair matted down wetly across his body and face, Rex shook his head to get his hair out of his eyes and sent bullets of water through the air in all directions. His hair stood on end, stiffer and thickker than his hair had been before he'd gotten to the island... Nita MacNeal Nita bounce-walked out a few more paces, having forgotten how buoyant saltwater was. Of course, water reaching Rex's chest was up to Nita's chin. She stood on tip-toe to keep the waves from splashing her in the face. After dunking herself a couple of times, Nita blew water out of her nose and leaned back, clumsily but effectively treading water. "And I thought kitties didn't like water," she joked. Rex Vadnais Rex laughed and moved in even closer to the shore so it was easier for the girl to stand through the pulsing waves, "Y'okay?" He couldn't help but smile, she was so petite!
He paused, thinking about the water and cats. "To tell you the truth, I frankly just don't know!" he laughed, but continued to analyze, he was still getting used to his new instincts, whether they were wanted or not! "I.. don't feel anything different in the water. It's not any different than normal." Maybe those insticts just hadn't hit yet, though he hoped they never would. Rex loved water in nearly any form, living out of it forever would kill him before the doctors did. Nita MacNeal "Oh, I'm fine," Nita said airily, although she did take the chance to move into shallower waters. "You're just too tall!" She blushed, realizing she'd said the same thing to Lauren only a few nights before. "I think some big cats do like water, though. I've seen stuff on Animal Planet with tigers swimming." Nita shrugged. Red pandas probably weren't too fond of the ocean. Rex Vadnais "Hey, I'm not that tall, you're just a shorty!" Rex laughed and sent a splash her way. He, too, had a memory of Lauren. He really enjoyed her company, though he'd only seen her briefly at the beach party since then.
Rex had a distinct memory of some kind of big cat swimming as well, maybe it wasn't so strange. There were some weird superstitions and presumptions out there, things were different when you were living as that lie. "We're pretty dang cut off out here, on the island... No TV, no computers, no phones." He kicked back in the water and bobbed gently along the surface. Nita MacNeal "Pff, that's what they all say," Nita shot back, sticking her tongue out at Rex. Oh yes. Very mature. She squeaked and dodged the splash, only getting water in her ear instead of full in the face. Nita folded her arms, pretending to be cranky. She sighed. "Yeah, I do miss the internet. And they've got a lot of TV shows on DVD in that rec room, but it just isn't the same." Rex Vadnais Rex caught a wave and floated in towards the shore, scrambling to his feet once again and trudging up to his towel. The moon in the sky reflected on the water's rippling surface, shaking in the wakes' disturbance. He dried off his face and chest, then ran his towel down his legs and wrapped it around his waist. "Well that was refreshing!" He sighed and smiled. Nita MacNeal Nita half-bounce-walked, half-swam back to shore and retrieved her own towel. She brushed the water from her arms and legs, spending a couple of minutes wringing out her braids. Shaking sand off of her towel, she wrapped herself up and slipped her sandals on. She nodded, staring out across the moonlit water. "Mmhm. And it was good seeing you again." A yawn split her face. "All this salt in the air makes me sleepy." Rex Vadnais "Yeah! it was nice to see you as we-!" Rex's sentence was cut short by a large, cat-like yawn. His fangs became much more pronounced and his tounge unfurled like a red carpet. He blinked a few times and said, "I think I ought to get to bed... I'll see you around though, okay? It was nice to see you!" Rex smiled and waved, walking back to his duplex through the jungle. Nita MacNeal Nita grinned, both because yawns were contagious and because of how feline Rex looked just then. "G'night Rex," she called after him. Gathering up her jeans, she walked slowly back to the village, following the tideline until she needed to make her way through the darkened jungle.

Metaplot Thingy Nita will probably spend most of her time in her duplex, reading and listening to music. She might also do a bit of writing. She's been staying up later into the night and taking walks along the beach around sunset. Her visits to the cafeteria are sporadic, and she usually stocks up on food for her minifridge.

Waking Sunlight streamed through the window, making dust motes visible, dancing across the room. Nita groaned and rolled over. The alarm clock next to her bed was blinking 12:00. The power was back. The sun was shining. What day was it? How long had she slept? She pushed herself up and scrubbed at her face with her one hand. She stopped. There were traces of dirt under her fingernails. Nita flung herself out of bed, legs wobbling, even under her slight weight. Standing in front of the mirror in the bathroom, she inspected herself carefully. Her hair was frizzed out, as if she had been zapped by lightning, or attacked by an over-zealous beautician. Faint smudges of dirt greyed her face. The jeans in the hamper beside the sink were soaked and muddy. Twigs littered the floor. Why hadn't she cleaned up? And where had the mess come from? She shuddered and turned on the shower. Hot water. Good. Stripping, Nita stepped into the bathtub gratefully and began to soap herself. Her skin tingled occasionally, which was awfully disconcerting. Rumors of a microchip allowing the doctors to put any Islander under floated through her mind. She hadn't done anything... had she? She shivered under the hot spray. Finally feeling clean, Nita dried off and dressed. Her hand brushed against her shoulder absently. A welt. A puncture wound. Nita sat down suddenly as her knees gave way beneath her. She held her head in her hands as memory crashed around her.

Alec stomped his clunky boots up to Nita's door, grimacing as the thick humidity clung to every fragment of clothing and inch of skin. It was particular bad after a rain and he bet that storm must have been some rain. Palms were strewn across the ground below to create a layer of decaying matter though the sky was beginning to show no sign of any disturbance whatsoever.
Reaching the door, the punk teen wasted no time as he abruptly began banging on the metal barrier obnoxiously. "'ALLO!" He yelled out, slumping against one side of the doorframe as he waited for the inevitable response. She had to be home. She didn't do anything besides sit and read dictionaries all day anyways.

Nita, in fact, had been cleaning her bathroom when the sound of an all-too-familiar voice came through the door. "Just a minute!" she yelled back. She brushed her hair out of her face and pulled herself up.
"Hey Alec," she muttered, peering through the partially-opened door. Nita eyed his footwear and sighed. Maybe he'd get the point and leave them outside.

Alec nodded a greeting, eyes darting down to his muddy boots though by the looks of it he didn't get the gist of her body language. "Aye, wutcha busyin yeself wi'?" He asked the question out of fragments of politeness, not really that concerned with the response.
The boy stared for a moment in silence. Why the hell was she making him stand outside still? "Can a' come in?" He smirked a little.

"I was cleaning the bathroom," she replied. No? He wasn't going to get the unspoken request? Nita suppressed the desire to roll her eyes. "Yeah, sure, come on in." Nita opened the door the rest of the way.
"That was one hell of a storm, yeah?" She sat carefully on the edge of her bed (obviously newly made-up), vaguely gesturing at the chair across the room.

He looked pleased with himself when he was allowed inside, successful in trailing in enough mud with him into the entryway before noticing he was making a mess. Cleaning. Exciting. Just what he expected. "A' slept through most of i'." He absent-mindedly answered as he kicked off one boot at a time. "'appens a lot a' guess."
Noticing the gesture, he moved to flop down into the chair opposite of her. "'s so damn quiet now though." He commented with little focus to the conversation until a stray hand rubbed the back of his neck, a tinge of pain reminding him of his previous state. "An' me fooken 'ead 'urts like a b***h."

Nita winced at the mud from Alec's boots. Ah well, she'd get rid of it when she finished with the bathroom. "You're lucky. There was a lot of thunder, and the power went out."
She nodded sympathetically. Her head didn't hurt, but she still felt weird. Tingly. "I've got ibuprofen, if you want some..." she offered.

He wasn't sure what she was talking about, but he refused to admit it for even a moment. "Ye sure, thanks." He nodded and leaned back in the chair, letting his arms hang down over the sides. "Poweh out?" He furrowed his brow at the thought, having not realized that the island's electronics were even susceptible to such a seemingly common issue.
Alec let the thought rest for a moment before a question sprung into his mind, fueled by curiousity. "'ave ye talked t'anyone else?"

Nita stared at Alec for a moment before going to the bathroom to retrieve the pain-relievers. Had he seriously slept for the better part of three days? "Here," she said, dropping a couple of pills into his hand. "There's soda in the fridge."
She sat down again and watched him carefully. 'Yeah, the power went out, and then it came back, but only some. Like it was on a generator or something." Nita shrugged. Other than that, she had no idea what had happened. "No, I haven't been out yet."

Helping himself to a drink, he popped the medication and downed it with the soda with ease though he grimaced again as he did so. Whatever hit him, hit him hard like nothing he'd ever felt before. He listened to what Nita knew about the situation, peering at her from behind his pop can as he sipped at it once and awhile. He thought for a moment before adding to the conversation again. "Mehbeh I'll take a walk o' somethin. See where's evereh-un." He didn't directly insinuate that she was welcome to come, but he wouldn't reject the company even though it was her.

Nita nodded. "I may do that in a bit. The past few days have been... weird." She shrugged. "Besides, I really do need to finish cleaning." And mop up the mess you made, she thought, but tactfully didn't say. "Let me know if you find anything out?"
