hhmmm... heres MY opinion.. (gets flame shield up)
aeris dying was the best thing to happen to the game... with out her dying, the game would just be- another game that was ok... instead of the best game in the multi-verse. It just added to the story, and gave it more to work with!

TT.TT It's been 2 years, and I'm not done mourning.
._. But it's true. It definitely made the game more heartfelt onto an emotional level. Besides, if there's anyone out there in this forum who likes Tifa ('cause this is an Aeris forum), if Aeris didn't die, there wouldn't be a Tifa.
Literally. Tetsuya Nomura once called the director (Yoshinori Kitase) and suggested Aeris' death, and create a character called "Tifa" and make her a lead female, because no FF game had 2 main females. So, Aeris died because of a single phone call that shaped game history.
WAAAAH, AERIS! TT____TT WHYYYYYY?! ...x.x Oh yeah. *sobsobsob*
But as a funny musing, during the development stages of Tifa's costume, there was a version of her with pants. >.> Practically all the judges were men. What, oh WHAT do you think THEY'LL pick?! -.-
