Challenge #5: Time After Time | 1910s!

"Who hopeth, endureth all things?
Who thinketh no evil, but sings?
Who is divine? This Bird."
The Blinded Bird - Thomas Hardy

About This Look: In fashion, the 1910s really spelled an opening of the style; removing layers from outfits, lessening the intense shapes made by corsets. Though the s-shape created by cinching and thinner lace corsets there are still things to be clung onto. I wanted to really broadcast the widening of colors - pinks and blues were becoming very popular as more silks and imported goods from overseas everything was changing.

With Zanna's outfit, I wanted to lean more on the texturing and decoration that would happen in parties; being able to revel and drink spiked tea while hearing the latest gossip about the whispers of war. She wears a simple blouse and bodice, something fitted but soft to conform to the body and create that s-curve that was still important in the everyday figure. Finding a good hat to match was a challenge but the Unexpected Invitation proved to be an unexpected match!

Though her blouse was a perfect match, finding a skirt to replicate the style I wanted to go for was a little challenging. During this time, skirts were becoming a little shorter at the (gasp) ankle, and the silhouettes were less defined and more cylindrical. With what I found, several felt lacking in the softness of that age, instead using Seeker of Light layered with Wondrous Miss and Diamond of the First Water we created a gown that felt opulent - a gift from overseas and something that feels timeless.

I didn't want to go overboard with the accoutrements, but I wanted to add something close to a Chatelaine - a utility chain hooked to a belt loop with many different trinkets used in daily life. The Severed Bloom was the best fit for this, creating the look of a chain across her waist as an accessory and the scissors at the end adds to the look and the feel for the peace. As we could not change the hairstyle for Zanna's look but to further tie in the piece, I found a White hair pin and used it to help keep up her hair and add a little something, as those were also common to keep for ladies on the daily.

For the background I wanted something simple, as this is a tea party for an elegant lady, so when our shooting location had a window with a castle in the background, I simply had to.

What is Zanna Wearing?

Rosamund's Revenge (Peaceful Kingdom)
Pick Your Nose (animated style dark)
Haunted Saga (Academie Cinched Blouse)
Haunting Louis (Balcony View)
Curls of Serapherins
Bubblegum Wonderland Carousel (blouse)
Unexpected Miserable Invitation (hat)
Luminescent Diamond of the First Water (Headpiece)
Luminescent Diamond of the First Water (Gown)
Seeker of Light (Overskirt)
Soft Wife (Pin)
Clouded Usakeiko (Face)
Obscured Severed Bloom (Belt)
Luminescent Daughter of the Sea (Pearl Necklace)
Wondrous Face-slapping Miss (Dress)
Treasured Dynastic Ribbon (Sprinkles)

Emergence

About: Where I live, we get approximately two weeks of spring before we jump headfirst, screaming and crying, into the humid hell that is summer. But those
two weeks are the best goddamn two weeks of the year. The days promise warmer weather ahead while the nights reminisce about the more temperate winter
days we just left behind.

I wanted to capture that sense of transition with Cressida's spring look. I chose to combine the deep jewel tones of winter with the brighter, more pastel colors
of spring. The overall effect is one of emergence, the brighter tones popping out of the deeper background to conjure the image of growth. I imagine Cressida
as a representation of the Roman goddess Flora, whose festival hearkened the coming of spring. Like Flora, she is wreathed in flowers and comes bearing the
gifts of spring (thank you, Simple Esse!).

As for item combinations, I really enjoy the way Blooming and Withered work together as color schemes. They complement each other while still maintaining
their distinctness. I love it when I find a great color combo like that! I also spent awhile working on the head to make sure it balanced the bottom. I had waaaaaay
too much going on up there in an earlier version that I then pared down to what you see now. It's clean while still feeling organic.

A Neon Paradise

About: This challenge. This challenge.

This has been, by far, the most difficult challenge I've faced so far in this competition. I found myself overwhelmed by both choice and limitation. I wanted
to create so many incredible looks but was stymied again and again by the lack of this item or that. A strange dearth of shoulder pads. An annoying inability
to layer the right skirts. I created multiple (multiple) full looks that just didn't feel right until I finally went back and reread the brief.

When I think of the 1980s, I think of neon-colored optimism twinged with an edge of disillusionment. I think of vibrant tones, bold prints, and a sinking feeling
that Reagonomics isn't for the rest of us. So I decided to scrap the goth look (as much as I liked it) and instead set Cressida high in a skyscaper, covered head
to toe in bright, clashing colors. I took a lot of inspiration from this fabulous article and combined it with the worst the 80's had to offer.
It was painful building this look. Painful.

As for the clothes, I am really happy with the way the Sweet Lovebirds sweater blends with April M. I went through many color options but decided that
one was the best combo. I was also happy to find the Byul glasses! I have a picture of my dad wearing glasses that look exactly like them, and they always
scream "80's" to me.

For the background, I chose something opulent but slightly empty. Sort of like how capitalism is an empty promise amirighthahahaha I didn't want the background
to compete with the vibrancy of Cressida's outfit lest she get lost in the noise. And I don't believe we have any mall backgrounds... right?

Challenge #5: There Is No Green Screen
Designer: Sleepy
Model: Kimber

Spring is slowly creeping its way into our lives, but also Winter still refuses to release her chilly grip from us.
Kimber here is ready for all the cold and frost to finally leave us for good, but for now shes still gotta keep a little warm, so shes rocking a comfortable soft yellow Cardigan from the User Image Blooming Lost Unmurin set. I myself enjoy a good house coat/cardigan, no matter the seasons, and with Spring being such a fickle time, expecially early Spring, they are basically a necessity!
I didnt want to oversaturate Kimber with all the soft colors, so I opted for some comfortable black skinny jeans and a brighter green shirt.
The jeans and comfy brown loafers come from the User Image Terrabloom, while the brighter green silky shirt is from User Image Serene Garden Fae.
I really wanted to add some floral accents, but I didnt want to drown Kimber in flowers, so I opted for a floral sunhat from User Image A Plethorta of Blooming Pots, as well as a few loose flowers for her hair from User Image Gardealle's Soft Friends.
Overall, I really think this gentle look suits Kimber really nicely. Shes ready for the everything to warm up and is excited to tend to her garden once again, but until then, shes keeping herself warm from the still chilly air, while enjoying the early greenery and warm sunshine!

Challenge #6: Time After Time - 1920's
Designer: Sleepy
Model: Kimber
Submission Status: Complete!

User Image

Alrighty, the 1920s!
This time around, its not the theme itself that gave me a hard time, but the time period I was given. The 1920s, from what I could find, was all about the loose, straight dresses and Flapper inspired styles. And even the more elegant dresses I found, being evening tea dresses, I couldnt find much of anything to match it here on Gaia. I scoured over 80 pages of just "vintage", and even tried to narrow it down to key words like "frock", "cloche", and "flapper", but sadly the only decent items I found were, you guessed it, flapper dresses. I didn't want to do a Flapper, so I opted for the next best thing, mens styles!!
Now, back in the 1920s, women did wear mens styles a bit more often, mainly for outdoor jobs and sports, but it was growing ever more popular to just wear pants and knickers for their overall comfort, especially if you were an active woman back then!
And Kimber is, indeed, an active woman!
Kimber is seen here embracing the freedom that wearing mens clothes can give, sporting a comfortable pair of trousers from the User Image Regal Wyrd Collection.
She has opted to pair these trousers with a delicate blouse from User Image Independent Secret Character, accented with a soft black ribbon.
Kimber is also wearing a User Image Beary Jolly Cloche hat, as well as a User Image Melancholy Runcible Knife half jacket.
Kimber is embracing both the feminine and the masculine of the era, and she is ready to take on the world!

Inspo photos:
User Image My original plan was to try for a tea time style outfit. Sadly, despite my searching, I couldnt find any decent straight dresses besides the "Flapper" dress, so I scrapped the look entirely and went for the more masculine style.
User Image This image here was the push I needed, and I honestly enjoyed seeing all the masculine styles of the 20s. It was quite a treat!

Description: I thought about what I liked about springtime at first. Was it the flowers? The weather? Picnics? I decided to go with a fruity citrus based theme because I absolutely love all kinds of fruit (mango is my favorite!) What’s better than enjoying a nice drink with a lime and a passionfruit in the springtime? I tried to incorporate elements of multiple fruits - mainly strawberries, oranges, melons, dragonfruit, passionfruit, and limes to name a few. Since fruits mainly are green, red/peach, or yellowish orange, it was easy to choose which colors I wanted. I didn’t want to do anything too pastel, as Harper already has light hair and pale skin, so it would look a bit washed out if I did, plus I know many people default to pastels when they think of spring.

I originally wanted to do an Easter theme, but it didn’t look how I wanted and it would have felt too camp (which would have been cool) so I decided on doing something fruity instead. As for the outfit, it reminds me of Strawberry Shortcake a bit, which obviously is a staple for fruit-related fashion. I gave her an apple shaped hat but in a salmon-like color because the raspberry red/pink one was too bright. I wanted the red in the outfit to be more subtle. I thought about doing a bonnet-like hat, but the ribbons and the size of the hats felt like too much. Also I didn’t want to overdo the amount of fabric, because springtime is when you’re usually wearing slightly less clothing because of course it’s getting warmer! I chose an armmod showcasing fruit for the theme, and wanted to include ribbons and bows. Overall I’m very happy with this look, using no background actually was easy because I hyperfocus on backgrounds! I did a rosy makeup look that still looks soft to complement her features and the outfit. The outfit is giving springtime picnic vibes, which is exactly the look I was going for!

Description: So this was the hardest challenge I’ve had to do so far, easily! I was not familiar with 1900s fashion AT ALL. I was only privy to other decades like the 50s, the 70s, even the 1880s, but I wasn’t sure about the 1900s, so I did a bit of research. It was so difficult to find a gown that encapsulated the 1900s (the Bower series seemed to be the closest but I didn’t want to use a whole set and I wanted more dimension). I also wasn’t sure about the colors, but I knew I wanted it to be a bit more neutral but still with color. I settled on navy & brown, which complement each other pretty well!

The 1900s had one big staple - BIG AND WILD HATS. Colorful hats! However, I wanted the hat to fall over the head instead of behind the head (which a lot of the big straw hats did). Also, 1900s fashion is defined by tiny waists with romantic large gowns. I tried my best to encapsulate all the 1900s themes with still looking cohesive. I’m okay with this entry, I think I did my best and I started overthinking so I didn’t want to do anything overcomplicated. I wanted her to do an 1900s activity instead of just looking nice, so I chose an armmod so Harper can drink her tea! I also wanted a fancy but vintage background to complement the outfit, so I chose a ballroom background. Finding a good corset to complement the outfit was hard as well, so I actually combined the two. All in all I think the outfit is fine enough, but wow was it hard to find the right sets to combine!

As you guys know I'm very keen on research for any challenge but I never really know what spring wear is suppose to look like.
Where I live it tends to be a very short season going from too cold to very suddenly too hot with little moderation.
I also have never paid much mind to what I'm suppose to wear seasonally and I am more of a wear what I like and curse the weather kind of girl.
I have been know to wear sundresses in the snow.
Which is why I immediately decided to hop on to good old(sadly actually newer and worse) google and try and figure that out.
Fortunately its the right time of the year to see whats not only generally right for spring but whats on trend.

Naomi is looking spring fresh in her ensemble.
Which is using items in color scheme blooming.
Now I never rely on a single color scheme but I had a good reason to this challenge. Now why is that?
Well for 2025 two of the colors for spring that designers have trending are Pistachio Green and Petal Pink!
Which means not only is Naomi looking great for any years spring but she is also completely on trend for RIGHT NOW!

I went with the loose flowing pants from Tsunbani no Monogatari which also have sandals so Naomi is comfortable for a warm but not hot day.
The simple green top with the patterned tie bow went great with the shawl arms from Strength of the Pride and I finished the look with a lovely pair of earrings, a floral crossbody bag, and her headband.

This is the fastest I've turned out a look and I am completely satisfied with it!
I'm honestly really happy that for this challenge there was no background I feel like the small details and simple outfit stand so well on their own here.
I also want to say this challenge was so fun for me it felt just as light and airy as spring.

Floribund

Abundant with blossoms, spring comes once again.
After all, there will always be flowers for those who wish to see them.

gaia_sakura

Much like spring feels like a breath of fresh air after a dark and cold winter, this challenge had me invigorated after struggling over my gothic look! Spring is my absolute favorite season, and each and every year I look forward to the signs of flowers returning, bringing life and color back to the gloomy New England landscapes. This winter was rough on me for many reasons, but joining Project Catwalk and using these challenges as a fun little creative outlet has genuinely been a bright spot in these past few months.

The arrival of spring always makes me feel a little more like myself again, so for this challenge I wanted to return to the soft, light colors that I most enjoy working with for avatar building, and revisit some items I really loved (but ultimately felt didn't work right) for earlier challenges. I created for Pearl my ideal romantic spring outfit--a flowing dress with a lace-up ribbon bodice, billowy sheer sleeves, and a gathered, ruffley hem, paired with a wicker bag, both resplendent with floral details throughout. For an extra little feminine touch, I added a girlish ribbon hairclip that is accented with a strand of pearls, and I loved how perfectly it sits with Pearl's side-swept bangs and flouncy curls.

With no backgrounds permitted, I thought this was the perfect opportunity to instead use a statement accessory to help fill the void: the decked-out floral parasol from Flowerfall, which I have had my eye on since working on my audition entries! This gave the inspiration for my entry title, as "floribund" means blooming or blossoming, but also references a the floribunda variety of roses known for their dense petals and lush clusters of blooms, which closely resemble the flowers decorating the top of the parasol.

Finishing off the look, I gave Pearl some petal pink makeup that emphasizes her youthful beauty. I especially love the blush that sits higher on her cheeks paired with the soft pink shadow, as I think it feels evocative of a fresh-faced spring maiden!

Vintage Vixen

I was so excited to have the 50's as my assigned decade, as it's one of my favorite periods for women's fashion. When I think of this period, the image that comes to mind is the cinched waists, voluminous hems, and clean A-line silhouettes that Christian Dior popularized after the end of WWII, a style he called The New Look.

...However, finding items that authentically represented the typical 50's dress silhouette in the way I wanted was impossible! As many have probably found by now, Gaia has slim pickings for items that accurately depict historical fashions. Most of what comes up when looking for items from this decade is diner waitresses and poodle skirts, which felt a little too kitschy for a classy lady like Pearl.

So I pivoted. While full skirts and crinolines are the typical image of the 50's, this decade was actually the first where shorts became more acceptable for women to wear outside of athletic activities and posing for pinup photos. In gathering references, I was drawn to photos of glamorous young women strutting the streets in their short-shorts, paired with crisp cotton blouses that show a little neck and collarbone. I chose an item that evokes gingham, one of my favorite nostalgic fabrics that feels emblematic of the era. I also wanted to recreate classic 50's combo of statement sunglasses and hair tied back in a bandana or headscarf, and was pleased to find some items that felt accurate to the look. With such a summery outfit, a California boardwalk felt like the perfect backdrop for Pearl to show off those gams!

Spring is finally here!
Oh, do I love backgrounds.
This challenge was hard as I KEPT getting drawn to backgrounds and had to basically feel like a kid getting their hand swatted with each glance lol
At first, I wanted to make Priya feel like winter shifting into spring. However, changed the idea due to an item was attached to her back seemed too much like a background.
After the scrap, I wanted to keep orange flowers as part of her color scheme as they flattered her skin tone.
Playing with different silhouettes I became obsessed with the arm pose. Which led me to have an inspired look of flowers reaching from the soil.
Her complexion felt perfect for early spring soil as flowers emerge from every angle.
The leg pose I felt sold it further as it had vines wrapping around her legs, and the flowers bloomed into her dress of wildflowers.
I wanted her to feel enchanting since I often feel ever enchanted by the coming spring and the new life it brings.
I hope you adore Priya in her floral glory.

yum_checker __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ yum_checker

I was given the 1970's for this challenge and HOLY HECK, what a challenge it was.
Gaia I have found isn't well known for its 70's era clothing/styles. I searched high and low for anything to represent bell bottoms that weren't just a gold shop item.
Same with finding anything with patterns and their matching colors.
A lot of 70's fashion seemed to be bold or muted color palettes, mixed with patterns and from unique silhouettes to the most body forming, often making someone look from head to toe.
I also found they loved these newspaper boy-style hats(so did I when I saw them). As well as jewelry that stood out or accented the neck or arms. Platforms were also all the rage.
With all this in mind, they also liked to keep things as cohesive as possible. At least from what I could tell from the fashion photos and some old photos posted in articles I found.
I wanted to combine these specific elements as disco was popular in the late 70's and probably in part what it is best known for.
Since Priya was on the dance floor I wanted her to stand out with her popping color pallette.
The disco floor color choice was also inspired by 70's home decor that was rich in oranges, yellow, and off-white/white. (Not counting the many pops of color you might find)
I hope you can get groovy with Priya's blast to the past!

۞Dirty Thirty's
۞User Image
The 1930's were characterized by it place between the two World Wars and the Great Depression.
More women entered the workforce during this time and the Fair Labor Standards Act was enacted protecting American citizens from discrimination on the basis of age or sex.
Fashion for women became more conservative than in the 20's with longer length dresses and more traditionally feminine shapes.

The first thing I needed for this look was a dress the right length.
Daywear dresses in the 30's came in at mid calf and it was a challenge finding a dress with the right style.
Gaia has very few fitted mid calf dresses I found 2. Fortunately the dress from Draconic Matriarch had the right bodice and length.
I still needed to cover her shoulders for a daywear look as enhanced shoulders were part of the look and a lady in the 30's would not be caught dead without gloves.
I chose Su-purr-ior Catch Meow for the sleeves and gloves it also came with a handbag which was also needed.
proper stockings and shoes, a coat, and the Opulent Dame feathered cap finished off her outfit. I also added the collar and tie because I found the neckline too low.
The only other main detail was choosing a thinner brow which was still in fashion at the time.

I wanted to show a woman working a professional field rather than a housewife.
While the styles and cuts would be similar for daywear the colors and prints of fabric would be different and have more feminine accents.
I choose a simple and classic navy blue as my focal color for this outfit with accents of white and cream because it looked stylish but serious.
I imagined her as a journalist and wanted the background to reflect a big city that wasn't quite so modern.
I like the hazy sky as it subtlety suggests evidence of the dust bowl which towards the end even blew into the cities further away from the plains.

I'm very satisfied with how this look turned out I feel like it captured the time far better than my 20's look from cycle 5 and it shows the growth in my abilities which feels really amazing.

Following the 50s and into the late 1960s, women would find lively entertainment on the boardwalk. Join Marina for her stroll through history with her fashionable headbands, pointed-toes flats, and fun but "dusty" color-coordinated set.

I actually asked my grandmother about 60s fashion for this one, and she raved about the matching color-coordinated sets and straight-legged pants that took over the scene around 1967. All the while, she reminisced fondly over the moments she had walking the boardwalk and her time sailing with my grandfather. While I can't say too much about her experience since I haven't lived it myself, my goal was to capture the trends she remembered so fondly in her youth with this look, and bring some of that old time spirit to today!

Designers, you all should be SO PROUD of yourselves for what you did in this double header!
There were multiple perfect scores given out, judges were screaming praises, and most of you
were separated by just a matter of points. This was definitely one of the hardest ones to judge
yet, and I want to thank you for that. Keep up the good work, keep listening to feedback, and
don't be afraid to push yourselves! Especially in this next challenge, there is room to really
shoot for the moon, to go big and bold, and I hope all of you do.

ThoughtsofaDame — Naomi
• You killed it this week, the judges were impressed how good Naomi looked in both entries,
you got multiple perfect scores for the decades challenge in particular. You should be proud
of yourself!
• The biggest thing you need to work on is color shading. In the spring look a couple things
were too light, and on the decade look the background was a tad too dark.

torimani — Harper
• Judges were dying for some strawberries after your spring look, and your decade look
transported us right back in time, great time!
• Like Dame there were some coloring things, but there was also the arm holding the saucer
in your decade look. It disappeared in a weird way that stood out to the judges.

Eziara — Imani
• You came in third by a single point, you were fantastic this week! Aside from generally liking
the looks, the judges also just really liked the way you formatted your posts!
• The skirt length of your decades look was just wrong. And we know there are limitations to Gaia,
but it stood out to us. One judge suggested maybe some tights would have helped, or something
similar to help fill out the bottom a little.

Picaru — Pearl
• Look, you know what you're doing with Pearl. You're super talented and you know what looks
good on her, and that shined this week. From the pose to color scheme, Pearl looks great and
there are always details for us to look at and enjoy.
• You've given us a lot of looks of soft Pearl, and we really loved seeing Pearl in a vibrant and
saturated look for the decades look. We'd love to see you dress Pearl up more in bold colors
like this, mix it up from the soft looks.

Kr-E — Priya
• You gave us a lot of details, and your descriptions were particularly strong. You were clever
and creative with these entries, and we loved seeing that.
• Both looks edged on too busy, some judges thought it worked perfectly for the spring look
and some didn't, all agreed there was a lot going on in the decades look. Sometimes you
need to just take off one thing, or when it comes to the background desaturate it a little in
some way to make sure the outfit is always the thing that shines.

Ananemain — Cressida
• We loved that you gave Cressida an unexpected color scheme for Spring, and dressed her
in a quintessential 80s look that bordered on tragically ugly but in the best possible way for the
challenge!!
• We shudder to think what the spring look would have looked like if you hadn't pared it down,
there was so much happening everywhere we looked. We also are shocked that there isn't the
picturesque mall background (sent me down a rabbit hole looking for one so thank you for that
haha) but we do think there were a lot of better options and ways to meet that vibe.

wishflower — Maeve
• Both of these looks were cute, solid, flattering on Maeve. Good color schemes, good details -
personally I was obsessed with the frosty eye make up for the 90s look that really sold the time.
• These were cute looks, they could have been more detailed. More accessories on the 90s look
would have anchored it more in the time. Also, while we liked the anchoring of the spring look, we
felt like the vest was just a little dark. The looks just needed to sing a little bit more.

actualdeerooze — Zanna
• These were cute looks! You can always make Zanna look adorable and purple is really her colour!
• The looks were fine, and in a challenge where so many looks were on another level, that just
wasn't enough to boost your score. The hat was also a problem, mainly because of the view
where it disappears. You only need to present one view of the look, and if you give us more,
we will judge more and it usually doesn't go well.

Sleepy Luna Moth — Kimber
• Both of your looks had good bones, and we LOVE that you gave Kimber pants for her decade
ensemble. We also really appreciate having the references linked in the description!
• These looks were so simple babe! Sometimes you only need a handful of items to make an
amazing look, but when you use very simple items to do it, they were just...fine. And there was
room to explore more, give us more story in the description to back things up or add just a few
little accessories or layers to the look to push them over the edge from simple and fine to simple
and stunning.

supersunshine506 — Marina
• Thank you for your description on the boardwalk look, and giving us some insight into you and
why you chose that design! That description was easily the best part of your entries this week.
The way you built the jumpsuit for this look was also impressive.
• The description for your spring look was easily the worst part of your entries this week. It was
practically non existent! We need to know more about your thought process, why you chose one
item over another, all those details. You also suffered from showing us every view, because in the
back views items glitch and cut differently in a way that doesn't work.
