That type of scar is deliberate, dragged across his face. It would have bled alot....
It was probably just added by Kishimoto-san to give Iruka's character a defining feature so we would recognize him easier, as he isn't a major player through the whole manga - no matter how many fans protest - and he's had it in every single picture of him we've seen.
He grew up in a shinobi village, so it could've been anything from being abducted as a kid to a deliberate act of violence by someone he knew.
O.o? Eh.... yeah, there's probably a bad memory tied to that scar.

No one really knows where it comes from,but it says on Wikipedia under Umino Iruka that is indeed a scar and not a birthmark.

I personally think it was a show off attempt. Like trying to use a hard to use ninja weapon, and falling and hurting himself. It would explain why he tells no one! ^_^ Cause he would be to embaressed!
Either that, or he did it on a dare and cut across his nase WAY to deep when he was little and got the scar.

Kabuto medic-nin i think the fox but not sure Nuh-uh. If you look at the flashback scene in episode one, he has the scar, and even there it still looks like it was an old wound.

I though he got it when he was little ^^ He was trying to impress his dad with his kunai...-.- but hit himself in the face xd So it left a scar right above his little nose!
