[ A ] few weeks, no more, and much had changed within the Heart Village. Firstly, people had begun to act differently, no longer recognizing the terms of Shinobi as colloquial and seeming to have forgotten the more common names of some class of shinobi. In fact it wasn't so much a suddeny choice, but a sudden loss of understanding. With it his own abilities, his journals had changed to include terms and knowledge he hadn't previously had, though the parasites and his own memories showed him to not be completely insane. Those terms, and the history behind them, were not forgotten, and from the little conversation he'd dared have with others the past carried these terms, too. Yet there were no Shinobi now, but Arcanists, new terms for old rules that simply failed to apply anymore. All of this and more while he worked alongside the Anzu to form some sort of stable economic relationship, one that either favored the humans or at the very least kept them on even ground. tab It really hadn't been that great of a week. tab There was another part of this change that bothered him, something that spoke to him where it should have before, but for the moment his mind was kept distracted by learning to speak this infernal tongue! As the leader of the village strode through the streets of his market with the short-gaited Anzu diplomat beside him the Mizukage, or Heart King as he'd been recently called, kept his attention sharply on the creature's mouth as it formed the hooting and growling that made up its native language. It wasn't easy replicating those noises, not without others finding out just how his jaws and lips worked differently than others, but he made do as they conversed once more about the lack of measure to ensure that Anzu would not only remain the reserve trade currently but have preferential tariffs on imports. The damned beast had an advantage given they were arguing with advantage, for disregarding their economic structure would have antagonized all three races within their species in an instant. That meant he had to acquiesce, at least for the moment, to their demands while ensuring favorable access to knowledge necessary for them to survive in this new world. tab AS they walked, however, a sharp whistle caught his attention from above. One of his Mist Wraiths had noticed another person breaking free of their chrysalis, meaning another addition to their fold and another mouth to feed. Following the gesture before the Wraith made off he caught sight of a girl dashing into an alley. Whether this was to avoid his gaze or just to hide and think for two seconds wasn't readily obvious, but out of necessity he assumed the former. Act in caution and often be rewarded, as he often taught to past apprentices. tab There would be no way for him to speak to her directly, of course. A King did not run into alleys to speak with potential miscreants, after all. Instead he sent something else: his familiar, even as he gestured to the Anzu to stop and wait for a moment, if he didn't mind. tab Perhaps Alessa would find it odd indeed when the ground near where she stood began to move and shift, as hands reached from within the mud to place two delicate hands on either side and haul a young female, no more than a foot and a half tall, from a hole that sealed behind her. The female short as she appeared was nude, revealing a pair of bat-like wings that extended up and above her before folding into a cloak around her shoulders. Made entirely of the mud about her, the figure looked up towards the stranger she'd been sent to address and bowed slightly, never taking her blank, clay eyes from from the girl's face. "I greet you, and offer you an invitation to speak to one who might assist you, and educate you in a world you will find alien. If you would be so inclined, please follow me and speak with my master."

Alessa continued through the busy streets of the market place, ducking into a short alleyway away from the growing throng of people. It was then that she felt the hair on her arms stand on edge for a moment. Mana? Its presence called out to her instantly, filling her whole body with cravings. She spun around to find the small creature forming out of the ground. Some rudimentary form of familiar or shade. It made Alessa wonder where her own familiar had gotten off to. It was possibly that even he had died after such a long period of time but more likely he was floating through the aether, waiting to be called.
Alessa returned her attention to the mud creature before her. "Lead the way to your master, and be quick about it. I am not fond of waiting."

[ W ]hen the tiny creature provided a shallow bow, a simple gesture to indicate the level of status the creature assumed she possessed (being none), she never took her eyes off of the girl. Turning towards the sharpest route to Hesrik the companion moved off, each step bringing with it a small rise from the earth as if the mud were rising to meet her. She wove through traffic, with people halting or moving out of their way to make room of the little elemental, though there were looks of concern towards her whenever they appeared to think she wasn't looking. Only when she approached the Kokorokage, his bronze skeletal armor flashing in the morning light, did she finally slow and come to a halt. Dropping to one knee with hand to heart the little woman intoned in a passionless tone her arrival. "As commanded, my master," was all she said before she dissolved back into the earth, her body falling into pieces beneath the grey-eyed gaze of her superior. tab For Hesrik's part he watched their arrival with no hint of any emotion. The facemask he always wore covered his jaws, making it impossible to read the majority of his face, while the white hair and corpse eyes gave him the appearance of someone ancient in age. The girl had no way of knowing he was younger than he appeared but that didn't stop him from leaning slightly on the scythe he carried in one hand, feigning some level of dependency on the object for stability. Beside him the envoy of the Anzu hooted, clicked, and chittered towards then girl to offer greetings, something that might well be taken as a threat given the creature's alien appearance and the golden regalia it wore that resembled defensive armor. Without taking his eyes from the new girl's face he translated, the former Shinobi's voice quiet and calm with a slight rasp as one who may be older might possess. "My companion wishes you greetings, young one," he began, gesturing with his free hand towards said companion. "I extend my greetings as well. I am Oragor, the Kokorokage of this village, or Lord if you would prefer the term. I imagine this must be a little unsettling and confusing, and I hope to offer some assistance in adjusting to your new situation." tab Smooth, careful, considerate, and a healthy dosing of fatherly advice crept into his tone as his insistence as Hesrik worked to provide an illusion of grandfatherly concern. Despite the dead-fish eyes he possessed in this form Hesrik was quite keen of vision, and as such he watched her carefully. Beneath his breastplate the parasites quietly shifted closer to the exterior, pressing against his rib cage as they caught her scent. Age. Rage. Annoyance. tab She felt things, which meant she wasn't dead. That was a plus these days.

Alessa's eyes followed the creature as it bowed at the waist, matching its own eyes. It seemed that the creature could at least follow instructions without any hassle as it immediately took of towards its master, parting through the crowd with ease. It seemed that the village was used to the small creature as many halted or went out of their way to avoid it. There was a time when entire throngs of people would have parted at the mere mention of her name but as Alessa moved through the crowd there were smiles and laughter. These people blissfully went about their dailies lives. How long had she been trapped in that infernal prison? Even some of the words they spoke sounded foreign; slang words that she had yet to learn. What new secrets where there to discover in this brave new world?
Alessa was so caught up in her surroundings she almost failed to sense it. Almost like a sweet scent on the wind she was drawn to it. Mana. It called out to her just before they reached this mysterious master. She had felt smell traces of it when the creature had first arrived, but now it was growing larger. However, something felt off about the Mana. It felt... strange.
When pair had finally cleared the crowd, Alessa was greeted with the source of this mysterious power. The gleam off the armor caught Alessa's eyes, causing her to recoil momentarily from the light. When Alessa re-opened her eyes, the creature had vanished and was replaced the strange armored man that creature had called master and his strange companion. Before she could even process the scene, the new creature immediately began chittering and chatting at her in some vulgar tongue. Given her present situation, Alessa refrained from any outward reaction. There was a time when she would have attacked such a creature for being guilty of nothing more than existing. It was a strange world indeed that she had been brought back into. According to the other man, the creature was giving her some kind of formal greeting, or so she would be led to believe.
It seemed that her new found acquaintance was willing to offer her some form of help. Alessa nodded as Hesrik spoke, immediately changing her expression. She let a look of worry cover her face as she looked up at the masked man. "Will you really help me?" Her voice quivered as she spoke, belaying some sense of fear. In reality, no such feelings existed but Alessa had no desire to reveal her cards so quickly. "My name is Assela. N-n-nice to meet you."

[ T ]he taste of the girl's emotions told him all he needed to know: she was faking it. There was no scent or flavor of fear, not a twitch from the beings that lived within him, and that in itself was damning testimony. Feeding on the negative emotions of other beings ensured he would feel them, but to be fair they were not out, not close. If she did indeed feel fear then it was buried beneath a more positive emotion, which in itself would be strange given her apparent terror. Still, what did it mean? The stutter, the eyes, the quivering in her voice, if indeed it was a facade what was her end goal? tab Perhaps he was being paranoid, though that had saved him in the past. tab Nodding to the girl he gestured to his entourage with his scythe, attempting to convey the importance of their existence beside him as he continued. "I will help as I can, though you will need to come with me. I have promised to show them our walls and the technology therein, so it would seem as good a time as any for us to discuss as we travel anything you have to ask." Speaking in the hissing and clicking of the foreign tongue Hesrik explained that he would be bringing the new girl with them in their travels to help her settle into place. This seemed to please the envoy whose lips tilted upwards at the edges, what he learned would be the equivilent of a full grin in humans. tab Beginning his walk forward with the other falling in step behind him Hesrik kept his eyes forward and walked at an even, though short, pace to allow the small girl to keep pace in case she was weakened from her recent freedom. As he did he asked but one question, one he hoped would slip her up if even a little as she thought of an answer. "Tell me, Assela, what were you in your previous life?" It was a question that could prove most useful for him to know but could also prove her undoing if she hesitated too long in reply. A young child innocent of dark misdeeds would likely speak quickly without much thought, especially if she's as innocent or frightened as she appeared to be. tab tab tab

Fear was such a pesky emotion to copy. It had been many lifetimes it felt like since Alessa had experienced anything close to fear. Fear simply got in the way too much to be of any real use to her. Anger. Rage. These were more worthwhile emotions. It was likely that she would need to pretend for some time however. Her body shivered for a brief instant at the thought of needing to keep up the charade.
As Hesrik and his companions continued forward, Alessa did her best to keep up and look worried. She shook slightly and stayed close to Hesrik's cloak. If any of her items had survived her incarceration or even her familiar was present, she wouldn't need to such a ruse but it would likely prove useful until such a time. She spent so much time scheming that she nearly missed Hesrik's question. As eh spoke, she answered in without a moments pause. "I was a magician's assistant, Mister Oragor." It was a well practiced lie, one that had gotten her out of trouble more than enough times and readily explained away her skill with magic or the presence of certain artifacts within her possession.

[ N ]either lying nor telling the truth, from what he could tell. It was clear she was already thinking more than he had when he woke, but then, few had to war with the nightmares in their skull. She eyed him with mistrust, he was willing to bet, though he had no time to observe her directly while he discussed with the Anzu some finer points of their architecture. From what he could translate it appeared they disliked the fortifications because it did little to sway away flying enemies. In fact, walls made those inside more susceptible to death from the skies. The though had crossed his mind, and maybe that would change if they ever saw the array of golden thread that crisscrossed the sky in an enormous net. The Anzu stayed down on the ground out of respect for the humans, else they would have learned long ago of that particular trap awaiting them. tab As they rounded a corner he deigned to speak again, this time gesturing for her to come up beside him with an upraised hand twisting in a "come"motion. "An Apprentice, you say," he began, his voice measured, even, tame as he considered his next words carefully. "I knew many magicians in my time. I wonder if I knew of them. No matter. I have need of such an apprentice, myself being an Arcanist." No stumbling over the word! It sent a roil through his guts at the sound of it, since it was another indicator that the world had changed by ways he'd yet to understand. Terminology he once used freely were no longer part of the communal lexicon. That alone boded ill for other parts of his knowledge that he'd not yet tested. Gesturing ahead, towards the northern gates, he continued. "Or you may leave, of course, but this is a new world. You can find much here to bide your time and peace together a new life. It's just a matter of...input." tab tab

Alessa continued at a brisk pace behind Hesrik and the strange bird emissary that continued to make that incessant clicking noise every time it spoke. Instead of trying ot listen in on the conversation and decipher what was being spoken, Alessa turned her attention to the city itself. Not the boring throngs of people, but the buildings. High walls surrounded the city, more than enough to stop the more conventional armies that would hope to attack. But what of the sky? Clearly the Anzu could merely swoop in as they pleased, or all other manner of flying monsters that had existed in her own time. Things had clearly changed a great deal since her own time.
As the group rounded a corner, it appeared that Hesrik had concluded his current conversation with the Anzu and returned his attention to her. Alessa worried for a moment that he would launch into another series of questions. He seemed to be quite intent on questioning her earlier. At least for the time being he seemed to buy her story of being merely an apprentice. He even seemed willing to take on her services which could be quite the opportunity. "For the time being, I am more than happy to offer you my services in exchange for a few conditions of my own. I seem to have lost many of my tools and will need access to your storeroom and arcane supplies to replace them. [ A ] soft chuckle, dry and rough as sand over bone, escaped from the dessicated male as he turned an eye to his companions once more. Signalling to one of his attendants he directed them in a series of hand gestures of his own design to continue with the tour while he spoke for a time with their new recruit. Having warned of this possibility already the Anzu weren't likely to take insult, something he must avoid for the time being until negotiations were complete. Given the humans' unique situation they were more tolerant than he would have expected of dignitaries or diplomats, and for that he was openly grateful. Turning as he finished back to the girl and forming the last symbol with a clutched fist against the center of his breastplate he raised his scythe and gestured for her to go towards a nearby stall where they were offering something that looked like a...baked potato? "I will cover your expenses for today, if you wish to eat," he began, his husky whisper of a choice revealing no signs of the mirth he had just revealed. tab Moving alongside her if she decided to take it he continued in an unhurried manner. "Access to such supplies and knowledge is not something I give to merely everyone, young lady. You will need to prove trustworthy, and adept, before you will find your way to handling such things here." Tapping a nondescript leather book at his hip, clasped to his belt with an improvised metal clasp he moved on. "As far as historical record goes, however, you may find it lacking. Much of what has happened is...lost. We are only three months since the first of us awoke, not enough time to write about our past. But, I myself...I prided myself a historian. 「XXXX The sudden light and color and sound came as a shock after so long in the dark and silence, floating through the void of wherever he had been. Finn couldn't really remember how he'd gotten there, but then, he probably couldn't have counted to ten with how scrambled his brain felt. So when the light did come, he wasn't really sure what to do with it, even when the void released its grip on him and he fell to the cool and slightly damp ground of... somewhere.
It took a moment before Finn could find the strength to investigate further. But when he did, he was met with humid air and warm smells. Light was there, and if he focused hard enough, he could make out some shapes, but that was the best his eyes would work. It took him a moment to realize, but the shapes he could see--vaguely humanoid and staring at him laying in the dirt, he presumed--were made up of solid colors of varying shades, within which he could see streams and trails of the same color coursing through them. Almost like he could see the veins that made up their bodies. Feeling around himself carefully, his hand ran across a rucksack and, since no one was approaching to take it, he assumed it was his. He pulled it into his lap, rubbing the fabric pinched his hands comfortingly for a moment before he felt like he had enough of his bearings to push himself to his feet.
In all honesty, Finn had no idea where he was. Even if he wasn't half blind, he felt like he still wouldn't have known. Nothing that struck his senses felt familiar. But then, he wasn't entirely sure what was considered 'familiar' to him in the first place. His memory was about as fuzzy and numb as he felt. Ducking his head down slightly in a poor attempt at hiding himself from prying eyes, he half walked, half staggered toward the nearest building he could make out. XXXX」

Alessa followed Hesrik as he spoke, instantly shooting down her own demands. It seemed that he wasn't as trusting as he had first appeared to her. Getting to his supplies would likely take her some time. On a more important note, it seemed that she wasn't the only one who had been imprisoned. The way he made it sound, almost everyone that she had seen thus far in the town had been imprisoned in the same infernal prison. What form of magic could have casued something like this? Is is possible to lay claim to it? Alessa reached into her pocket, gently palming the small sliver of crystal she had picked up earlier.
As Hesrik motioned towards the stall selling potatoes, Alessa turned her nose up, almost in an air of disgust. Potatoes in such a form were the food of the common folk. Barely any nutrition and a bland flavor to boot. Did he really mean to say that a single potato was a meal!? Not wishing to appear ungrateful for the offer of her new 'generous' host, Alessa approached the stall, pointing to what appeared to be the most appealing of the potatoes available. As the vendor wrapped the potato and offered it to her, Alessa turned to Hesrik. "Not to appear ungrateful but do you have other food to offer? I do not know how well acquainted you are with Fae, but I need something with a little more mana in it than a potato. And it feels as if it has been hundreds if not thousands of years since I last ate, it would be greatly appreciated. As for my own history, perhaps I should see how much you are even aware of my homeland, Feindór. There is no sense in boring you with my history if you are blissfully unaware of my people's existence."

[ C ]areful observation would catch her distaste, though not the cause for it. That was something Hesrik filed away in his mind as he watched her select her snack for the moment, and simply stared at her as she asked about food and began mentioning things that were...concerning. Fae weren't exactly foreign to someone who worked with the world of magic during the days of Shinobi, but they were one of the races he'd never met nor found physical proof existed. The treatises on them were written by theologians and bards, not by philosophists and academics. As such the information was at best guesswork, with bits of legends and myths mixed in to fill blanks naturally created by the lack of concrete data. As such it came as a bit of a shock, but the words about consuming mana did glue some bits and pieces together that were quite scattered in his readings. Given the nature of biology a necessity for consuming mana in any form meant a dependency on it, much like humans relied on carbohydrates, proteins and vitamins to sustain a healthy body. This was written about by Skeldric the Mad in his third volume, Of Beings both Legend and Myth, written about two hundred years before the end of Kirigakure. If only the idiot had lived another ten year he might have been alive now to confirm his theories. tab Taking this in stride he considered if there was any food he knew of that would have enough mana to satiate her appetite. There were the so-called "elejellies", filled with raw magical energy, but they were often used as bombs from the upwelling. Perhaps in small portions? Reaching into a pocket at his side he withdrew a tiny glass contained within which sat a tiny blue bead, about the size of the average marble. "Perhaps this is more to your liking," he mused quietly before holding it out to her with his heavily gloved hands. "This is what we call here an Elejellie, a natural fruit that is filled with elemental mana in physical, compressed form. This one is made from water, and grows on rocks near rivers in specific places. If your kind do consume mana this might be the best bet for a staple in mana." tab Whether she took it or not he moved on to the other subject. "As for your home the name does sound familiar. I believe Feldegast the Blind wrote of it in the early twelfth century, though it was at the time believed to be a bout of madness instead of the clairvoyance he claimed it to be. Unfortunately, I would not be certain in naming a specific location for it, though I believe it was mentioned to be on one of the Water Islands towards the Southeast." tab There came a sudden commotion from behind him as he finished, causing Hesrik to turn his head to look behind him at one of his guards. Julius, perhaps, though it was difficult to tell several hundred feet from him. The man was gesturing towards another, a boy who seemed to blink too many times and to look everywhere in confusion. A handsign, and he understood: another Awoken. Sighing softly the elder spoke towards his new companion with an air of calm. "It appears we are lucky today. Another has awoken. Let us greet him, so I do not have to speak more than once on the past." With that he wandered over, his scythe tapping sharply with each step as he approached the young boy who, he was guessing, had a bit of a sight condition. As he neared he raised his voice providing a bit of authority to his tone. "Hello, there, young one. It seems you have newly awoken here, and are having...troubles. I am Oragor, lord of this township. Who might you be?"

「XXXX Somewhat to his relief, someone intercepted Finn before he got too far, clutching his pack for comfort while he staggered about helplessly. He paused the second he heard a voice nearby, since it seemed to be directed at him. A man, or he assumed by the voice, stood a little off to his side, though he had to squint to make out more than just the unsettling crimson aura that seemed to make his form. "Oh, hello. Finn." He paused for half a second before correcting himself. "Uh.... Sorry. My name." Letting go of his practically death grip on the bag with one hand, he rubbed the back of his neck nervously and apologized again. "Sorry, I wasn't expecting to take five steps and run into the leader of this colorful place." His gaze flitted briefly to the blob of color beyond the man he spoke to.
Finn shifted uncomfortably, averting his gaze to the ground in an almost childlike, shy way. "I can't see that good. S-sort of like if you un-focus your eyes until everything is just colors." Somehow, he seemed to shrink into himself without actually moving--which was impressive for his height of at least six-foot-one or six-foot-two--suddenly conscious that the man probably wasn't interested in his problems. "B-but don't let me get in your way. Sorry to, uh... sorry." Finn attempted to skirt around Oragor to eject himself from the interaction.
Unfortunately, Finn still didn't have the faintest idea where he was, nor could he even vaguely find his way around, which led him to misjudge and clip Oragor's shoulder with his own hard enough to nearly end up on his face. Catching his balance a few feet away, and barely keeping hold of his bag, Finn stopped in his tracks, face burning with embarrassment and an uncomfortable amount of anxiety. Slowly, Finn peered back over his shoulder, a horrible amount of worry writhing in him for a reason he didn't know. Its not like he really did anything wrong, but his brain didn't want to believe that. Because with the mistake came with flashes of a dark place that he didn't want to think about in the least. XXXX」

Alessa took the small vial from Hesrik's hand. It sounded like some disgusting concotion. An "elejelly". What a horrid name and it came in such a small vial. How could something liek this ever satisfy her thirst? In Feindor, it was commonplace for food to be grown with an infusion of mana. Specific foods were cultivated over generations to leech mana from the earth and elements to provide for the diets of the Fae. Alessa drank from the small vial, twisting her face as the horrid taste entered her mouth. The only redeeming quality was the surprisingly large amount of mana contained within the small jelly. "The taste leaves much to be desired but perhaps mixed with something it could be made more... palatable. What I would give for a Goldenfruit. As for Feindor's location, I can't give you an exact location, even were I to see a map. I could point to exactly where it is and you would never find it. You need an ocean sage and no small amount of luck to find it, let alone pierce the veil that surrounds it. There is a reason it is known in the common tongue as the Golden Land."
As the pair were speaking, it seemed that yet another crystal had shattered. It didn't seem to be anything out of the ordinary as the pair made their way towards it. How many more crystals remained to be opened? Would this person recognize her?

[ H ]ead cocking to the side as the boy explained himself Hesrik considered the scent the boy was putting off. Fear, but not strong. Apprehension. Concern. Likely from being faced by the leadership of the location when he had just woken and he could see nearly nothing. Not anger, rage, or pain...nothing he'd expected, which showed much about his character. Instead of being guarded he was embarrassed, especially when he bumped into the arcanist and fell to the earth. Instead of attacking, or even defending, he let the boy strike him and watched him fall. Still he stared as the boy turned and looked at him with apprehension as the taste of fear grew, and for a moment he considered how the boy's heart might taste. Yet there was no time for such thoughts, not with others watching, and so he simply turned with his scythe clanging against the stone as he steadied himself and held out a hand, his gloves clanging at the movement. "Please, child," he calmly chided, voice husky and tired as one would expect of someone of advanced age. "You need not worry. There is much that needs be explained, and I find pleasure in assisting those in need." tab A lie, of course, but a white one at best. tab He considered the boy's response about his blindness and found it somewhat intriguing. Without the ability to see he might well take time to figure out that only the young remain, which would, if he was perceptive enough, put Hesrik's apparent age in question. Not that many assumed him to be old but others spoke to him as an elder, and there was no coincidence in that when considering his exterior. Back to the matter at hand his vision would be a hamper to his learning abilities, meaning... tab Stopping that thought in the ground Hesrik turned his head towards his new apprentice whom he'd only just met. She'd been speaking to him about her kind, and complaining about the flavor of the elejelly. Given few he knew could eat the material it didn't surprise him to find they tasted bland or worse. There was a reason he did not consume mana, after all. What did bother him was the lack of knowledge in regards to where her home lay. The middle of the ocean could well place them nearby, since the Land of Water lay many miles from the main land, but it could also mean a problem if her kind came looking for her. Fae were known as fickle beings, the dark ones especially, and while he knew the girl posed no threat to him at this time the same might not be said of her elders. tab "I've heard tell of the Golden Land, and I know of a few personally who have blessed its shores." That wasn't a lie in and of itself, as he'd heard Jack knew of such a place and had described it in detail in his side journal, volume twelve. Perhaps if he learned to find her home he might find the true prize, the island of Jack Harren Snipe. tab Turning back to the new person he awaited the boy's response to the offered hand. "While I lead this township I also ensure to speak to all those who awaken, as I know the fear and confusion that follows one's release. Please, take my hand, and I'll answer your questions alongside my companion here, for you have both awoken closer than expected in time."
