Robinpaw was tired enough to sleep through anything, but when she felt Riverpaw get up from her spot next to her, she blinked her eyes open blearily and looked around. Cats were stirring, she observed as she woke, stretching. She padded over to Riverpaw who was standing with Littlepaw. Her kin-mate seemed to be muttering something about getting herbs.

"Is someone sick?" She yawned. If someone got sick in the night, she had no doubt that Littlepaw could help get them better. As the Medicine Cat (apprentice or not) Robinpaw had complete faith in her kin to help.

It was then that she noticed Sunseer nearby. There wasn't any heat coming off of him, like there was Riverpaw, who stood next to her. Robinpaw drew back, her ears flattening as she gasped in dismay. She looked to Riverpaw and then to Littlepaw and walked around to stand by Littlepaw's other side.

"I...I'm sorry, Littlepaw." She mewed. The rubbed her shoulder against the other she-cat's and stared at her, their mismatched eyes showing that they were kin, if not their pelts. She didn't know what else to say and she found herself gazing around for Skysong, the newly named deputy, who was nearby. "What...What's going to happen now?" She asked the silver she-cat with wide, scared eyes. Was MountainClan coming to an end? But their journey had only just begun!

Silverstreak had slept through the night, surrounded by the warmth of her family. When she woke, she felt both rested and unnerved. It took a moment to realize why as the stirrings of other cats served to help her wake. Before she was able to identify the unfortunate happening, she saw the lizard next to the group and she smiled down at it. It still carried Dawnbreak's scent on it. She would wait for her siblings to wake to eat it with her. She appreciated the gesture, of course, but she wouldn't eat when her sisters, or Stormsong, could be eating instead.

It was then that she noticed the huddling group of apprentices and Skysong lurking nearby. Her ears perked, her eyes becoming concerned and she heaved herself to her paws to address the deputy. As she approached, she noticed the body of Sunseer that the apprentices were crowded around. Her stomach gave a lurch, but she kept moving towards Skysong. Her tail wrapped around to the pale she-cat and she rested her tail tip on the deputy's shoulder.

"What shall we do now?" She asked. After a long pause, she added in a softer mew. "We can't stop here, just because..." She wouldn't look in the direction of the body. "He wouldn't have wanted that." She finished, hoping she didn't look as lost as she was beginning to feel.

Dustfeather woke to the familiar sound of a pained yowling. Such things were unfortunately commonplace in MountainClan. Yet, Dustfeather was never able to sleep through the sound and as some others may have been able to do. Besides, this sound was different. Even before he woke fully, he was able to identify the mourning yowl of a young cat.

Blinking open his eyes, he shifted slightly and looked beside him at Duskwing, who still slept. He smiled down at her and moved slightly to lick her ear, before he got to his paws. He looked around him, trying to piece together who may have passed in the night. It was then that he saw three apprentices, Riverpaw, Robinpaw and Littlepaw, gathered in front of a body. As he strained to see who it was, his legs nearly collapsed under him when he finally managed to identify the source. Sunseer.

"No..." Dustfeather's mew was hoarse, stricken with guilt at the sight of their leader. In a crashing realization, Dustfeather's throat tightened as he whispered. "I did this. I killed him." He hadn't brought anything back from the hunting patrol. He had thought that by not eating anything himself, there would be enough to go around to everyone else, but... He shrank backwards, almost toppling over Duskwing. "I did this. I'm the reason he died." He repeated, eyes wide and guilty and scared. Who was he to call himself a warrior, if he couldn't even ensure the life of his leader?

Graypaw had trouble sleeping at first. Everything sounded different. She started at every new sound. It took a long time for the gray apprentice to fall asleep. The rising sun awoke Graypaw and she wondered when she'd fallen asleep last night. She slowly began to stretch.

Graypaw was startled when voice began speaking with pain in their tone. What was going on. She wiggled around until she heard the news. Sunseer was dead. The apprentice crept back to her mentor.

User Image

Splitnose debated getting back up to help hunt, but that was just so much work. He sighed and wiggled into a more comfortable position. Maybe he'd hunt in the morning after a good night's sleep. Splitnose groaned as he heard the other cats starting to rouse. Was is morning all ready? He draped a paw over his eyes. Just 5 more minutes mom. Then maybe he'd get up.

Voices aroused him again later. What? What was going on? The tom slowly sat up. What? His eyes widened as the news sank in.

User Image

Stormsong make sure his siblings were well settled before curling up himself. He purred to help them fall asleep in the strange surroundings. At least they still had each other. The sound of distressed voices roused the gray tom from a fitful sleep. Stormsong lifted his head and saw movement near Sunseer. Rising up he moved slowly closer. Something was wrong with their elderly leader, he could tell. After a moment of watching, he knew. The leader was dead.

He sighed and lowered his head. He hadn't expected to have Skysong as a deputy for so short a time. This was going to be a harder trip than any of them expected. He sat and watched to see if anyone needed his help.

Flamepelt watched as the other cats settled in for the night. He sat with his front paws together and his tail wrapped around them. Cool blue eyes looked out into the night, keeping watch so his clan could sleep safely. He'd found another to take his position as guardian and gone to sleep late. Flamepelt roused at the sound of distressed voices near him.

"What's going on?" He murmured drowsily. He sensed Littlepaw moving away. Flamepelt watched her go off to check on Sunseer. Judging by her reaction something serious had gone wrong. He moved closer to see what. Seeing the still form of their leader, he knew. Flamepelt moved over to Littlepaw and leaned silently against her shoulder trying to offer what support and comfort he could.

Bloodoath had curled up next to goldenleaf once he was satisfied she had eaten. He fluffed up his fur and blocked any wind from getting to the pregnant shecat, but he slept uneasily. He heard Skysong stir and he voice. He looked up and saw with a heavy heart skysong moving to get littlepaw. He watched a moment before moving to sit up a bit. He looked toward Sunseer and his resting form. Sunseer's scent was cold. He frowned as he watched littlepaw. And then that sound. He glanced sharply to Goldenleaf and flicked his tail over her shoulder in silent comfort. "I think so...." He looked sad but he was more worried in the long run. They had JUST gotten a deputy... how long until Skysong chose one this time? At least Skysong wasnt blind though. He turned his ears back as the medicine cat apprentice went on frantically. He had lost his parents and all his family as well. He felt her pain and while he would love to make the pain go away for her... he knew he couldnt so he stayed where he was. He glanced to Goldenleaf hoping the stress wasnt too much for her and the kits.

Dawnbreak had slept so well between her sister and splitnose. But her tail had been trailed out and when littlepaw raced through that tail was subjected to a painful step. She came awake spitting but watched littlepaw go. The whole tone of camp was somber in the morning light. She watched, her head drooping as Silverstreak walked over to confirm her fears. But she glanced to Dustfeather. "Stop...." She frowned. Duskwing would probably treat him with kid gloves but she looked to him with a glare before turning back into a sad look. "It just wasnt your day for hunting.... And if sunclan wanted him... no amount of prey we brought back would have kept him alive.... but there isnt time to feel guilty." She herself had been thinking that if she had brought more prey back then maybe this wouldnt have happened. But no... sunclan wanted him... and sunclan had taken him.

There were things to be done, patrols to be made, perimeters to be made secure. Dawnstride was used to doing these things alone, and doing it now was no bother to him. Of course, there were usually more around to regulate his actions, but with the pell-mell of moving... Suffice it to say that the ginger tom had been able to overwork himself more effectively than ever before. So much so that when Sunseer called for hunters, he had been asleep on the edges of the forest. He had slumbered so long after they returned, and into the morning's light. And when he woke up...

Littlepaw's cry of pain was one he knew all too well. One he had hoped not to hear again. Shrugging himself into a groggy kind of awake, Dawnstride moved closer to the knot of apprentices surrounding their snow-white deputy. Only once he neared could he see the motionless form of their former leader - and only then did a familiar weight, crushing and volatile, settle inside his chest. Like jaws around his heart. Against his will, teeth grit in his skull. "Little..." The male murmured, his pain a quiet, ever-so-faint echo of what she must surely bear. Sympathy would be a poor salve, but it and cold reason were all he had to give.

User ImageSkysong stood there, ears pressed hard against her skull, her eyes unable to look away from the lifeless form at her paws. She heard nothing, not Littlepaw's wails of sorrow and panic, not Dustfeather's guilt. All she heard was the blood pounding in her ears and Sunseer saying her name. This way her responsibility now. All of this was on her. She had to fix it. Had to stand up and take hold of the situation.

And so, with a deep breath and a shaky release, she did just that. She stood, shook out her fur and stood before Littlepaw's panicked form. "Stop, Littlepaw. There is nothing more that can be done. Hush." Her voice was firm, but not unkind. Her ice-colored eyes had melted and her sadness could be seen in them. Sadness and determination. She would not allow this to happen again. Ever.

"Flamepelt, take Littlepaw over to the shade. See if she has anything in her bundles to calm her. Keep an eye on her for me, please." The deputy turned to Dustfeather and saw Dawnbreak do exactly as she would have done. Skysong offered a nod of agreement and then turned to Silverstreak, "We shall bury him with the respect he deserves. He hunts with SunClan now." She looked over the growing crowd and saw many hungry faces looking back at her. She raised her head, they were all looking to her for answers. She raised her eyes to the sun, she was looking for answers too.

Splitnose

Dawnbreak glanced to Dustfeather and flicked her tail in sympathy over his shoulder before she went to say her respects to their leader... previous leader... and then went to take comfort in splitnose. She pressed against the tom's side. "You ate last night right?" She gave him a worried look. She didnt want him to end up in Sunclan. She gave a worried purr and snuggled gently into Splitnose. It was unsaid between them if they were mates... But she was going to take comfort where she could.

Bloodoath waited beside Goldenleaf a moment and then moved up. "Shall I bury him skysong? I can catch up if you want to go ahead." He frowned ready to help them move on in anyway they had to, and digging a hole was something he could do. He glanced at the body, their new leader and then back to the clan. Was this really what sunclan wanted? They sent them on this journey only to kill their leader.

User Image Duskwing was up far before the first sign of sun. She hadn't slept well with a pit of worry in her stomache, but didn't feel up to really getting up until Dustfeather had left and then nearly collided with her when he shrank back from Sunseer. She flinched at her sisters harsh words to Dustfeather, but it was needed. She was a little grateful that she hadn't yet seen Sunseer's limp body. He was like a second father to all the clan cats and she didn't want to see him lifeless. "Dawnbreak is right Dustfeather." She rubbed his side trying to comfort him. Inside she was torn, she had hunted her heart out and it still wasn't enough. She moved closer to Robinpaw to try and comfort her apprentice. She rubbed her side against Robinpaws fur as a somber greeting and to show her some comfort, seeing any cat dead was rough and she had sounded scared. She finally saw Sunseer lying their limp, her thoughts went back to seeing her parents cold and dead in their little nest. She shook her thoughts away to try and stay in the moment.

She looked to Skysong as she spoke, and nodded in agreement with her words. Now was not the time to falter, now was the time to keep this hurt little clan together and safe until the words of Sunclan brought by Sunseer come true.

User Image Deadeye sat slumped watching the entire scene. She had dozed for a minute and awoken to the wail of Littlepaw, of all the cats it was Sunseer to pass on that morning. She didn't wail for a lost friend, nor did she follow the cats leading Littlepaw away. She grieved in silence, watching and listening. She couldn't find it in her heart to try and interact with any of the cats as she didn't want to believe the beloved leader was truly gone.

She looked over the clan, it was hurt, but not broken as evidenced by Skysong assuming the position of leader. She made her way over to the group she might not be able to help Sunseer see his dream now, but she could still help the clan he left behind find it.

User Image Lilacmoon was awoken by the wail of Littlepaw. She knew that wail, it was one she'd come to know and fear over the past months, a wail full of sadness. Her heart plummeted seeing the tiny she-cat next to her father in a state of despair and frantic to try and save him. Her chest seized with hurt to see her leader lying so still and his lone surviving daughter having to see him in such a state. "Oh, Littlepaw, I'm so, so sorry for your loss." She padded over to the little she-cat and helped nudge her away towards the shade. She curled slightly around the little Medicine Cat apprentice to try and protect her from her inner demons.

Nothing she could have said would make it better for Littlepaw, her entire life had collapsed in on itself. She only hoped a calm caring voice of soothing words could help her find a space to start to heal from her sadness. "I know its not fair little one. He had given so much of his life for the clan and he was so proud of you when you became a Medicine Cat apprentice." She rubbed her face and chin against Littlepaw's neck and cheek. "He's with Sunclan now. He will always be watching over you along with your mother and brothers." She didn't purr at Littlepaw as this hurt couldn't be soothed away like that she kept the apprentice close hoping she could find some form of comfort from it.

Graypaw remained close to Goldenleaf. She really didn't have much to say, but she'd rather not go ahead until Sunseer had been properly sent to SunClan.

User Image

Splitnose quickly joined the cats saying goodbye to Sunseer. It was heartbreaking to think he wouldn't be able to finish the trip with them. Instead he'd finish with SunClan. How many others would too?

Afterwards, he curled up with Dawnbreak. He gave an noncommittal shrug. Splitnose tried to reassure her by washing her face. Was he doing the right thing? He wasn't sure if he was helping or not.

User Image

Stormsong nodded approval as Skysong said they'd bury him right. Of that he approved. He approached and bowed his head to Sunseer. Afterwards he approached Skysong, "I can help with whatever you need."

User Image

Flamepelt blinked to be called upon to help the medicine cat in training. "Of course Skysong," slowly he nodded to Skysong and rose to his paws to carry out the order. "Come Littlepaw, come over to the shade." Gently he pressed his nose to her opposite shoulder of the direction he wanted her to go. "Go sit in the shade and I will bring your herbs to you."

Once he got her moving, he bolted back for the packets of herbs and hoped she had something in them to help.

User ImageSkysong nodded to Stormsong and Bloodoath, her eyes still distant. "Yes..." She sighed, "If you don't mind. Somewhere that the sun will see him." She laid down beside her leader and for a moment she let herself bury her face in his cold fur. They had not been the closest of cats, but her faith in his strength had never waivered and no, to have to bear that same strength when she wasn't sure she would be able... Skysong took her moment to grieve and then, gently, closed her leader's curious eyes.

The day went by slowly, unbearably slow. At last, she could take it no longer, she stod, ears drooped and her tail dragging. With a hoarse voice, she spoke, meeting eyes with the dark grey she-cat, "I'm going hunting. Duskwing, you are in charge while I am gone. Prepare them, we leave at dawn." And with that, she turned and left.

Silverstreak nodded at Skysong's words. She was opening her maw to volunteer to bury him when Bloodoath appeared to do just that. She glanced back at her kin and she spotted Dawnstride nearby. Still, she felt obligated to see Sunseer buried and while she had no doubt that Bloodoath might be able to manage on his own, she still approached him, skirting around the body of their fallen leader.

"I'll help you, Bloodoath." She mewed and stood beside him, looking at him, rather than at the body at her paws. When Skysong finally started off on her own, she mewed. "We'd best get a move on too." She told the tomcat, though she was staring off after Skysong. Now Skysong would be their new leader, she supposed. She had put Duskwing in charge until she returned... Did that mean Skysong was considering making Duskwing the new deputy?

User Image

Dustfeather had been startled out of his guilt at Dawnbreak's words and he shrank away, even if he could hear the reason in them. He purred weakly at Duskwing when she nuzzled him, but he was unsure of how to proceed. Eventually, cats began to approach Sunseer to say their goodbyes. He was among them, but soon retreated back to Duskwing's side. When Skysong left to go hunting and put Duskwing in charge, he looked to her.

"I'm here to do anything you might need of me." He mewed and then with a half-smile added. "Though that would be the case even if Skysong hadn't put you in charge, you know."

User Image
Robinpaw remained by Littlepaw's side, occasionally looking up when other cats spoke in her vicinity. She managed a purr when her mentor approached her and returned the shoulder rub, before Flamepelt approached to bring Littlepaw towards the shade. Exchanging a look with Riverpaw, she nodded towards Littlepaw. They should go with her and help Flamepelt look out for her, she tried to convey to her dear friend. Then, she padded alongside Littlepaw, glancing up at Flamepelt. She blinked gratefully at him when he went to go get Littlepaw's herbs and she settled beside her kin.

"What herbs are used as a stress reliever?" She asked Littlepaw gently. "Will you teach me their names and what they look like?" Maybe talking about herbs could help get Littlepaw's mind off of what had happened, at least for a little while.

Riverpaw stood near Littlepaw and Robinpaw, watching the clan wake up and react. She was relieved when the warriors started taking over caring for Littlepaw. Though she wanted to help, she had no idea how and it made her feel better once the warriors starting taking charge because it gave her some direction. As Lilacmoon and Flamepelt took Littlepaw into the shade, River caught a look from Robinpaw. She returned the look with a nod and slow blink.

Following Robinpaw's lead, Riverpaw followed the warriors and Littlepaw. She waited for the others to settle around Littlepaw before she took her place in the ever growing pile. While the others spoke calmly to Littlepaw while Flamepelt went to retrieve the herbs, River sat silently with them. She didn't feel the need to talk, not that she knew what to say anyway. With everything going on, she also didn't want to overwhelm Littlepaw more than she already was. Hopefully the others didn't mind her silence.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. The sun was hanging low in the sky when Skysong returned. No, she was no longer Skysong. Sunseer had given her a new name, and nine lives to go with it. She entered the camp with a sense of confidence. She was Sunsong now and with SunClan's gifts, this clan would fulfill their destiny, find their new home, and flourish under their guidance.

She dug her claws into the bark of the tree they rested under and lifted herself onto it's lowest branches. With a calm voice, she called her clan, "All cats old enough to catch their own prey, gather beneath this tree for a clan meeting." Her blue eyes shone in the setting sun as she watched her clan gather. She had so much to tell them.

Pigeonpaw felt lost and confused throughout it all. So much had happened. Sunseer gone... Skysong was supposed to be the leader... right?

She crept out to where her mentor was. Sure, Skysong looked exhausted, but there couldn't be even more unfortunate news, right?

What good timing Silverstreak seemed to have, for when she had returned from burying the fallen leader, Skysong had returned too, to call a meeting. She looked up at the she-cat and found herself smiling a little, though it felt out of place in such grim times. Skysong certainly sounded like a leader, she had thought. So, moving in between other cats as she tried to locate her sisters and brother, she found herself stopping short as she came into Dawnstride's path. She perked her ears and after a brief moment she asked.

"Will you sit with me?" And beckoned him over to a spot that was closer to Skysong's tree.

User Image

Dustfeather had stuck to Duskwing's side, ready to do anything she might ask of him, including going out to try and hunt again. Yet, before he knew it, it seemed, Skysong had returned and was calling to the Clan to gather before the tree she was perched upon.

"Come on," He mewed to Duskwing, his tail curling around hers. "Let's go see what she has to say." For all he knew, Skysong could be naming the new deputy!

User Image
Robinpaw had not been surprised when Littlepaw didn't answer her question, but she still worried for her kin. She found herself sitting up besides Littlepaw and grooming her pelt.
"When I'm through with you," She mewed in between licks,"You're gonna outshine all of SunClan, Littlepaw!" She said, trying to think of anything else she could do to help.

Not long after, Skysong called everyone together. Nudging Littlepaw to her paws, she started to ease her towards the area that their Clanmates were gathering near and she mewed.
"I'll sit with you, don't you worry." She mewed, glancing over her shoulder to Riverpaw. She'd come with them too, right?
