As Chao neared the mirror, something manifested, an image of her, but it was different. More ordinary, more plain, and they seemed to be suspended in the middle of the mirror, hovering, sleeping. They did not stir even as they approached and-

Despite Rep not looking at a mirror, he could hear one of the mirrors yelling at him, hitting the other side of the surface so hard that it cracked the glass. They were saying something, it sounded urgent, but it was drowned out by a dull, muffled noise.
If he chanced to look at the mirror he would see instead of his horseman self, some unusual, twisted Hunter version of himself. It looked wrong, the more he looked at it, it looked-

One by one, each mirror too was slowly replaced by the same image, the original one fading away just slightly. The effects from those who interacted with the mirrors however, remained.
"Error," Dorothy said from behind the mirror, "This memory is forbidden and cannot be accessed. Any attempt to interact again with this memory will result in a memory reboot."
It wasn't exactly clear what a memory reboot was, but it sounded ominous.

"Of course you want to help," she said in a very patient, almost patronizing tone, "As we all do, as we are fated to do, as we were made to. I shall speak simply now: the mirrors are but memory fragments. We too, are fragments, as are you, though by no coincidence, your persistence remains. Perhaps there is truth in the matter yet, that conscience overweighs mind, though that is a thought for another time. For the now-"
- She tapped where she placed the flower against Loki's head-
- And Loki for a second remembered something far greater. She saw images - a tree, an island with a large castle - no this had a name to it, and she was something else - was it a Hunter? - something even more - she saw the island covered in green and then she saw invading the island none other than-
- "That will be enough," the High Priestess said, pulling away, and Loki at some point had collapsed to the floor. "You will know soon enough. This cage is not immense enough to contain us all."

Most of the mirrors had been overwritten with Dorothy. However, Adelaide's new reflection was unaffected. It was now gesturing right at Crane, saying something he couldn't hear in panic. It felt like a warning.
Despite Dorothy's intervention, more and more mirrors began to grow around them and just the two of them. All of them had reflections of Crane except one, which was quite empty.

Elaia remained as she was, pressed up against Terr but retracted her arms to rest against her chest. She sighed happily, taking in his words to her. So positive. She almost closed her eyes, content with just staying as she was.
The other mirrors began to shut down, as it were, Dorothy taking control and saying ominous words. It knocked her out of her content little bubble. Her blue gaze instead shifted to the one he had been previously referring to; not taken by Dorothy but still open to him. "Maybe you should go!" In excitement she pulled back from him, her hands shifted to hold onto the fabrics on his chest. "Yours didn't change, mine showed me something amazing and maybe yours will to!" This didn't seem like any radical behavior really, she probably would have still suggested him go. Adventure and all that.
Darkjay was still trembling, unsure as to what had happened and why he felt so petrified by everyone and everything. The deep sadness persisted, as did the sense he was stuck in a dark place, but he could hear Dorothy act like some sort of computer when it decided it didn't want to work.
"I d-don't..." He gulped, shaking like a leaf. "I d-don't understand" He didn't want anything to do with a 'memory reboot' W-what's g-going o-on, w-why do I feel s-so..." He sniffled, wiping away tears.

Adelaide glanced around, then at her reflection before her gaze settled on Crane. "What do you see," she asked again. She looked around them, at all of the mirrors that held his reflection, that held hers. All but that one mirror, in which Crane was absent. "What can you remember? What do the mirrors say about who you are? Who are you, Crane?"

Asuna frowned, stepping back from the mirrors at the apparent error. A memory that could not be accessed--- what was going on? Was what she saw in those mirrors memories? Who's memories? Certainly not hers for she was a horseman, she had always been a horseman.
Hadn't she?
Asuna continued to stare at the mirror where her reflection had been, asking if she was real. She frowned, turning from her mirror and stepping up to a fellow War Horseman who was shaking and trembling.
Who was she, if not herself?
"I do not know what this memory reboot is, either, but should something happen I will not let them hurt you, until you are able to defend yourself," she said in a soft voice, firm yet understanding. No sense in scaring him further.

As she approached, Chao realized that the mirror was even stranger than she had thought. Her reflection wasn't right, instead of looking like her it, was her but it was asleep. The other her looked plainer too. Before she could try to see if she could "wake" the reflection, an image of Dorothy appeared in the mirror. This memory is forbidden? What did that mean. "But why is it forbidden." She asked before continuing. "you are supposed to help us recover our memories."
Wasn't she? That was what the AI had said, but now Chao was wondering if it was true, after all if the goal was to remember why forbid the memory?
The Death Horseman looked skeptical, which was to say his usual dead-pan only one of his eyebrows was arched ever so slightly at his friend's suggestion to go.
There was that warning of a memory reboot. But that bit of information was what caused the earlier heel-dragging to cease and become more open to the idea of exploration. "I would not wish to put you in harm's way," he began. "But we've known each other longer than I can say for anyone else. For that, I will trust your judgement," he stepped through the mirror's threshold, "But you need not join me."
Which translates to Please come with me but I will respect your choice of abandoning me to deal with whatever fate befalls me on my own. Anyone else would have missed reading between the microscopic lines of Terr's words.

Though his personality had been reversed, he could still recall his pride as a horseman, and to have someone offer to protect him was a shameful thing.
"T...t-thankyou..." He felt the need to thank her, she was being kind. This wasn't like him, he should be angered to accept someones assistance but instead he was happy. Just what the heck was going on?!
As much as it galled him, Darkjay felt afraid of her even as she offered protection. Her large wings were frightening, even as his own curled upon himself as a makeshift shield.

Crane glanced from the mirror, to Adelaide, then back to the mirror again, pale brows drawing together. The mirrors were expanding now, popping up like flowers in the snow, growing into existence; Crane could see his own reflection smiling serenely back at himself.
Except for one. Adelaide's expression was calculating; Crane tilted his head thoughtfully at her.
His hands spread out in an easy, relaxed gesture that suggested a shrug, even if he didn't explicitly give one.
"I'm exactly who you see right in front of you. Or not see, as the case may be," he added musingly, regarding the empty mirror. After a moment, he stretched out his fingers towards it, the tips brushing the glass surface.
"How very odd."

Empty glass against the mirror Crane brushed against. And then-
- It looked like a cage on the other side, a most crude, bare cage. Inside the cage were chains, carved in odd runes, similar to the ones they used to chain up Hunters. One of the mirrors next to Crane stirred, it looked like him warped, unusual. It was dressed as a Hunter, their form gaunt and sunken. A dying human. Its lips moved, frantic, emaciated hands clawing at the glass, and then a panicked voice, echoing just barely above the surface of the mirror.
"Don't listen to her, she's one of them." its form faded a bit, just slightly, before matted hair looked back at him, "You have to leave right now, they know, she knows we're missing."
But why leave what wasn't fake in the first place?

For a moment there was nothing but the cool touch of the glass under his fingers, almost liquid in nature. Crane's brow was furrowed, his expression contemplative in nature, lips pressed together as he stared at the empty lack of reflection.
Except -
- except there was a reflection. Or a vision. Or something. It wasn't him; there was a cage instead, chains curling loose onto the floor, markings etched deep. There was no one in it; but the mirror to Crane's left shifted, twisted, and as he turned his head, he caught a glimpse of himself -
Or not himself. Or himself, but -
"What the - "
Crane half turned, staring, the words sinking into him. His blond brows were still drawn together.
"What?" he asked, and his voice was level, calm, at odds with the desperate, frantic creature in the mirror to the side, its emaciated and pathetic form making Crane feel vaguely ill just looking at it. "Who knows we're missing? Where are we missing from?"

Adelaide's gaze flickered between her own reflection, Crane, and the mirror from which his reflection was missing. Her eyes grew cold, and what smoldered behind them was fierce.
"I know," she whispered. Adelaide leaped, legs and wings pushing her forward as her arms slammed into Crane's back. She used her momentum to send him towards the empty mirror. The one that held no reflection of Crane. She was pushing him into it.
"You know too much."

Crane fell through the mirror at the slightest touch, and through the mirror Adelaide could see him wake up through the prison, just slightly.
The reflection, the broken, battered Hunter tethered in chains was Crane now, and he remembered everything, his true memories, that he was actually a Hunter. He remembered, and he was conscious, and in his cage he could see the mirror, the other side of the surface, he could see Adelaide gloating.
A voice whispered to him. His own.
Don't fall asleep. It's the end if you fall asleep.
His eyelids felt heavy.
Adelaide is a true horseman. This information is important. She's one of them. She's a horseman jailer. He needed to remember this, to tell someone. They were doing this to make weapons. They were going to-
His eyes were already closed before he realized it and then he was sleeping.
