"I grew up around water. When I was younger, it scared me because you were let go with only yourself. It felt endless to me. When we went to the lake, the plants or little minnows would brush my legs, or my sister would scream SNAKE just to scare me. It wasn't that it was just something in the water, it was that it could be anything."
"But then it changed for me. It reminded me of other things more than 'a what if' that never really came. It was my summers. The pools. The lakes. Trips to the ocean to watch boats on the beach or fishing at the pier where you could get icecream after. It was places like my grandmother's who had a lake by her house. I couldn't escape water. It was always there. Instead of a expanse trying to take you in, it also carried you. You could float above it like cold silk and watch birds fly or inside of it, and just feel it's presence all around you. The currents and pockets of warm and cold."
He raised a hand up Lawr's back to rub it slowly. "It's like what I would imagine floating would be like. I don't have wings, but in the water, I can move with all parts of me and go places. When my foot leaves the ground, it's just being able to start."
"What about flying? Doesn't that scare you?"

Lawrence tried to think of something else that wasn't the cold cold darkness reaching up to pull him down, the feeling of lungs that couldn't handle any more. It was a strange feeling, equal parts harrowing and tantalising and it was why he toyed with breathing in far less watery settings. He couldn't relax here though, he couldn't deal with the primal panic.
"Flying is fine." he said, still angling his head away from the water entirely. "It might be dangerous but like everything else that danger doesn't matter, it doesn't trip whatever this is the same way. I might fall to my death when I fly, but it doesn't feel truly real."
He could swim, he liked water that was tame, tame and safe compared to this place. "My encounters with water have been terrible, each run in getting worse and worse."
"Falling from the cliff, with the run in with Kostya, when the lighthouse was wrecked I almost didn't make it to the surface in time, I was very deep down."

And this time the hand at Lawr's back pressed, pulling Lawr tight against him as he thought of that.
"I couldn't find you after the lighthouse broke apart. I looked everywhere. I thought - I thought you were gone. Just like that. Just like before. That I was right there, and in a moment when I needed to protect you, to be there for you, I wasn't." Death was very real to him. In water. In the sky. Everything and anything could change in an instant, and his heart raced at such a grim reminder.
Of a soft face atop a tower.
Of a warm body against you.
Before it all went cold.
Taking a deep breath, he looked up. "Let's go back to shore." And he slowly started to walk up step by step to the shallows again.
