Guard met guard, and in the instant of arrival there seemed to be a note of aggression in the air...

"--Good of you to have me, old boy," --it was cut off by the victorious voice of the count. The look in his eyes was that of a man liberated by a long day of combat. Some men simply lived to prove their superiority. His men nodded as the count began to push past the red-headed man with a hushed wish: "... Do continue to stand tall, my good man; it suits you better than the finest silk on a duchess' shoulder."

"His lordship would have a word with the regent," stated the burly farmer turned lieutenant on the--if you must--left of the count. There was, after all, good reason for his lowered level of announcement. Since the beginning of this whole arrangement with Youkimi at the head of the nation, Dixon had found it increasingly difficult to catch the former baroness alone. Obviously, this presented a problem to the man who had buried his darkest deeds in the largess of her discretion: so too did everyone in Titania step around or perhaps even through the count; none save Bernard his butler, that duke of Phobos, and the one who gave him the confidence to lead when he could not, Youkimi Kai, walked with him.

Baroness Youkimi Kai

Glances were questions among the guard, and were answered with the slightest of gestures. These seemed almost a code to the untrained eye, but those accustomed to the humble discussion of ladies and judges in a courtroom, they were able to see for themselves quite obvious meanings in what was shared. It was fair to say that not everyone looked for these subtle clues.

"Thank you, sire." The red-headed phoenix smiled at this praise, not having been expecting it, but also appreciating that there was someone here who knew and understood the hellfire of a half-breed princess' disapproval. He moved aside for the count and began to direct his fellow guards to let the count pass.

"Captain, see to it that these men are given drinks and rest."

Takahiro bowed to the baroness, the nation's regent, and affirmed the command. He then turned to the visiting soldiers, and as warmly as any would greet their own warriors, Takahiro began to lead away the Count's guard and soldiers, taking them to where they could wash up and be taken care of until they were called.

The baroness greeted the count with a nod and accepted him inside the structure. It might take a moment, but she expected to find a quiet space for him to clean up if he wanted to. He looked.... a little more dirty than usual.

Unfortunately, for the first time in a very long time, Youkimi didn't know what to say. She didn't know what she could ask.

"Welcome back to Kaishin."

That was safe.

"Thanks for having me," returned the count with a sort of temperament that would suggest equal parts relief and gratitude. It really was a ragged struggle out there, and in the moment he found the cool, resting smile of the baroness a sort of salve for the knicks and cuts that dotted his visible skin; suffice to say it was very lucky to have a book with him--no... just a pamphlet--with him, for he needed some prop to give his arm an excuse to fold to his side. In the time it took Youkimi to find him a seat a couple beads of sweat began to crop up on the brow of our warrior-count. Still, he was able to cross his legs and look wonderfully poised... Somehow. "I was afraid I might never see you again," chuckled the count, perhaps afraid instead of looking the baroness in the eye for too long; he could of course manage for the moment by adjusting his jacket, fumbling his papers around...

"Hasn't been too rough, I hope," asked Lieutenant Tegan--burly, black-haired, leather-skinned son of a gun from the hinters of Etelan. He was an Errutchi: a man so gentle and powerful and like stone in every way but his heart that he was called by a dialectal portmanteau that meant something along the lines of Loving Son of the Mountain King. His hands looked quite ridiculous wrapped around the small cup with no handle handed him by the staff there. "Regent Kai must have a lot of unwanted attention."

The baroness took one of the other seats in the room. There was something familiar and comfortable about having someone she knew closeby again. How long had it been since she saw him scuffed from a fight? ... Oddly, it brought to mind brief memories of a time being a refugee, and yet even before that, when the Count's bold personality lent him to warring with those who gave him offence. His fists were callused by those fights even before he began to tame his passionate energy.

He was right... It had been a very long time since they had been able to sit down and talk. Though, his words surprised her a little. He was afraid of not being able to see her? Just when she thought she might have been able to gather enough to be able to hold a casual conversation, or even one that was related to work, business, or politics, it all went out the window as soon as she heard these words.

"You were?" She seemed momentarily oblivious of the servant who had entered the room and who was trying to hand a cup to Youkimi. After a moment of no success, the servant turned to Dixon and offered him something to drink.

Konoe Takahiro

The knight removed his helm and took up a spot not far from the lieutenant. After names were exchanged, it was easy for the guards and warriors to behave as normal. Yes, there were still many guards about the estate, but he could sit down for a little while an converse with their guests.

"Enough to keep us busy, but nothing life-threatening yet." Takahiro smile somewhat and took up a cup for himself, balancing the small dish on his fingers in something of an elegant manner. "Yes... Lady Kai has been receiving more attention than she's used to, especially with the passing of our late queen. May she rest in peace. ... Add onto that the demands of the emperor, the needs of the nation, and how little she looks like a warrior, it is easy for many to presume that she can be taken advantage of."

Certainly when one tried to compare Youkimi with anyone else, this was a risk. On the other hand, there was much that she kept concealed that didn't even meet public scrutiny or was enough to be passed along as rumor. She didn't attract that kind of attention. On the other hand, maybe all attention was elsewhere, as someone who wasn't a warrior wasn't as exciting as literal bloodshed the next country over, or the illness in some parts of their own nation.

"What has been your place in all the hostility?"

"Some of your lighter wine, my good man," ordered the count with a bemusement in his face, not taking his eyes from Youkimi. "Of course," he admitted with a small and casual shrug. "I can't tell you how poor Bernard worries about you, running the nation with all that moxie, mm?" He couldn't say, likely because the butler hadn't said much about it, but Dixon didn't need to mention that. He found it easier to speak to her, to hold eye contact, the more she seemed to stammer.

"... Perhaps we've both been a little too busy." He waited til the other was out of the room before going on. "Any given day feels like that terrible racket when Solidon branched off," confided the count, bracing himself lightly on the arm of his chair. "...--That is to say," he corrected, "that all these things have pulled me away from the progress I wish to make."

════════════════════════════════════════════════════════

"Suppose that's what people like us were born for," concurrent without so many words, as usual, Tegan crossed his arms and leaned against large barrel near the tent they were assigned to wait in while the others spoke of whatever was important to them. He'd never quite understood it himself; only enough to know that its importance was such to guide his strong hand in whatever way was best. Those things needed time--time enough to be bought by pleasant conversation with another whose way of life he had only just begun to know.

"I have been my plough for a sword," answered the large man, running a stony hand over the back of another with a kind of hollow rasp that spoke for his way of life. "It's very... Tiring," he said, not lifting his eye to Takahiro until an unheard syllable had passed afterward. "--Fighting doesn't suit us--any of Titanus' men--very well at all." Short on words, he would only follow with, "Now I am in charge of a legion of men, going wherever the guv tells us." When he spoke, his voice seemed to carry its own harmony in an octave deeper. Like a giant was always right over his shoulder.

The servant bowed an excused himself to retrieve the drink in question only after pouring a cup of tea for the baroness. Then the two were left in relative silence, which allowed for more casual conversation between them. This seemed so familiar, especially as Dixon seemed to relax.

Youkimi seemed to gather her nerves together. Bernard worried, Dixon had said. Then that was fair, she supposed, as it only made sense for Dixon to relay the concern of his confidant and butler. One shared a great deal with those who were close to them and who helped them navigate their private lives. She nodded slightly at this and also as she remembered the civil war of Solidon.... That recent events somehow entirely shrouded that event was something of a miracle, as it lessened the chance of Ethe being invaded, but at the same time, it did not seem to strengthen the people, either.

There was still the terrifying and hellish thought that somehow, or at any moment, one of the people that you trusted in a position of power, would turn it against you or their neighbors. Youkimi doubted her ability to keep the peace in Ethe now and again.

"Perhaps." She lifted the teacup, each motion as deliberate and practiced as it had ever been, though in such repetition seemed to come grace and ease that suggested effortlessness. Keeping her eyes on the teacup allowed her to gather her thoughts a little more easily. "I miss having the time and the energetic promise that came from Ethe's rebirth. This conflict is tearing apart our trust in our neighbors."

Konoe Takahiro

Takahiro lifted his drink to his face and tasted the flavor of it as he listened to the lieutenant. He heard from Hisoka's occasional letters that the soldiers and militia he trained had varying expectations of themselves and to the work, and so to hear it in person was interesting to the knight. He was of a select few who had not trained to bring a shield to battle, as it was impractical to use while on the wing, but this wasn't the kind of training that Hisoka had been teaching this militia.

Takahiro was intrigued. Perhaps he would ask the demure one later more about his experience.

"Are you displeased with being a soldier? I was under the impression that you were trained to be better able to defend your homeland and little else."

"Oh?" raised the count, "Why's that?" Certainly Dixon had his hand in plenty a foreign deal. It was as if he was an ambassador more often than a noble in the service of his people. That same willingness to help others was what kept him reaching out to the leaders of neighboring nations. And yes, he did have a sort of pointedly confused face on, knowing that it was perhaps his only way to nudge the baroness to do right by her own code always--to never grow weary unless it meant all of them could rest.

Not in so many words, thought the Erutchi, that he wanted very much to go home, that he did not like fighting in any capacity. Something in the way he carried himself spoke this long before his soft, deep voice was able to articulate it; and it did take him a moment to find the words. "I... I am." Slumped over, eyes resting their attention in the palms of his large, flat hands. "All that has brought us much trouble... Much trouble."

Youkimi smiled dryly and lifted the tea to her lips again. The servant returned with drink and cup in hand and offered it to Dixon. It was a wine glass, fashioned out of the ash, and etched with intricate and beautiful patterns, and impressive to look at if one turned it slowly against a light source. The servant would pour the glass until it was half full, and would stop there unless told otherwise.

When asked if there would be anything else, perhaps a meal or some kind of snack, Youkimi suggested some small morsels they could enjoy. The servant bowed and excused themselves again.

Youkimi's attention returned again to the question. "Yes. When the queen was alive and the land was alive, the people were energized. They were happy and content, and there was not war outside of our borders."

She lifted her eyes from the teacup and over to Dixon. Her smile softened somewhat. "We cannot regain that easily, not with what I understand of the fighting's progress.... and not with the vested interest of a few of our own in that fighting."

Chusi was one bold example, and Youkimi could only guess what Dixon was up to, but especially with the rumors among the people about the return of the princess and how she was fighting for her crown, many in the populous had taken up arms and had gone out already. She didn't have enough information to know how many had been conscripted into the princess' militia....

It was strange to realize how little control she really had. It was humbling, and at the same time terrifying. She couldn't protect the people if the war turned to their borders also.

"I hope it ends soon.... but wars never end as quickly as one would wish... There are too many conflicting interests."

Ah....

The knight heard this and he was reading the man's physical behavior. He was down, and the worry and memory weighed heavily on him. He was tired of the fighting.

Takahiro's smile slowly fell and he took up a more contemplative and serious expression. This man wasn't a warrior, it wasn't what he was brought up to do. He mentioned a plow.. this man was a farmer and he was being asked to play the role of a soldier.

"Trouble?" Takahiro asked, carefully probing for more clarification on this.

"Youkimi..." What the count could not understand, scintillating glass in hand, was how anyone could go on harboring that much worry in them. He was never lying when he said he was concerned for her. So many nights he practiced giving orders as she might have wanted in the unfortunate event something might happen. For Christ's sake!

"--Haven't you seen just what we've done since the queen left us? Haven't you seen the borders secure! I'm sorry, I am, but I can't help but wonder how many victories you allow yourself..." Dixon, as usual, seemed to take this all very seriously. His hand found his chin, stroking a flat circle around his mouth once before finding more words for what he felt.

"... The way I see it," he began again, focusing not on his emotions, "is that none are seeking us out in battle--save some dragon barbarians, but this is my fight." He found it difficult to sit up straight, showing an unfortunate grimace as he unfolded. "Mightn't we focus on that?"

════════════════════════════════════════════════════════

A solemn nod. "Yes." The man found himself in the heat of battle against dragons twice his size, not allowed to transform into his phoenix form, because he wasn't part of that division... "Trouble."

Out there it was just his large innox blade and the tenacity to make it back to his simple life that kept him sharp enough to stave off their attacks. "... Don't you think so?"

The blue-plumed phoenix smiled slightly. There were points in what Dixon shared, though he sounded concerned. Was there exacerbation in his tone? Could it be true that she didn't allow herself victories? It seemed very much to be the case, but with so much left to do, what could be counted as victories and what could be merely counted as steps in the right direction? The nation was productive and economically strong, but even as she looked over all they had done, it seemed as though it could all be so quickly ripped away.

There was little that was simple in a nation, whether it was growing, failing, or in flux because of recent success. She lowered the teacup and began to fill it anew.

"Yes, we can focus on that." She lifted her eyes again to the count across from her. He made many small moves of discomfort... Would he prefer an actual chair? "Are you alright?"

The knight swirled the portion of the drink that remained in his cup around slowly as he pondered. Not much was spoken, but there was a great deal relayed in the tone that the lieutenant used.

Trouble was too soft a word for so heavy a voice. It was the tone of a man so desperately out of his depth that he might well be prone to night terrors and never finding a way to sleep again. It was the tone of someone far away from home, tired, and who had no desire to be long away.

"Anytime a soldier is away from home, or on assignment, there is trouble." The knight acknowledged, but slowly, as though he was thinking over the words anew even as he spoke. "Trouble is what makes soldiers in the first place."

Once her dance with Roland had been completed and the revelries had followed suit Evelyn had found herself changing out of the pink attire that she had adorned for the crowning ceremony and instead she had changed into something that she considered to be more useful, a purple and black dress with an accompanying red swath of fabric and a gold and turquoise shoulder plate. She had opted out of wearing the official crown to Kaishin, instead wearing a simple circlet of silver that had been molded into a waning, full and waxing moon.

She had landed outside of Youkimi Kai's personal residence about an hour ago and she had stared up at it since then. Part of her was irritated at the woman for having made things a lot harder then they had to be. She however sighed as she walked until she could be seen by the guards. She was here alone. She looked at the guards and simply said to one of them "Please go inform the Lady Regent Kai that Evelyn Lionis is here to retrieve something precious and to speak with her on a few matters" she said and then said nothing more. The revelries of yesterday were over, it was time for her work to begin.

Baroness Youkimi Kai

The knight was adorned in the same manner that the guards were, and he carried himself well as the crowned empress introduced herself personally. That she came alone suggested a great deal of confidence, but also was a hint of trust that she was not going to be shot down. That was good, as Kaishin had no qualms with the crown of Lionis, though the matter concerning Ethe itself was still a talk of discussion alongside the work to find a cure for the Typhoid. Word had it that an alchemist had discovered a cure, but without verification, all the people could do was await further word.

Despite the rumors circulating in what counted for news these days, the ones who were loyal to the regent did not exclude the traders. The Kai family themselves were based on trading lines as knights that defended those routes. That the Baroness was able to help as many as she had during the ashen years was dependent upon wealth her family accumulated in trade. She was neither ignorant of how it could be managed, but also of the laws concerning trade. How else would Ethe have managed to recover from the volcano without this key understanding of economics and law?

The captain of the guards wore metal that was somewhat bright, as it was newer, but it had dents upon it that suggested it was dinged once or twice, either in active combat, or merely because of practice. In either case, it held up well, and despite appearance, moved well with the man.

He bowed slightly. "The Lady Kai has been expecting you. If you will please follow me, your excellency."

The knight then turned and led the way to the main building. Compared to earlier structures, this one had a square shape protected by a wall, but archery towers throughout the estate that were each armed with bowmen and access for any of these guards to suddenly take wing, if necessary. The main structure was a single floor, though a higher balcony around the outside suggested that this building was easily dependable, despite largely being made out of wood.

Inside the compound-like residence, the servants were at work, and generally minded their own business. The walls were simple, and seemed to be made of wood and paper. A few sculptures and paintings decorated the way from various craftsmen. One was a vibrant rendition of the exploding volcano, with the ash muted and the fiery rock burning brighter than the fleeing wings of the phoenix. Another was a traditional print on a thin banner, bound to the wall, of the baron, who passed away at this location years before, and passed the title to his surviving daughter. Yet another image was a strange sculpture of circles and space, appearing to have the flow of water, the shine of glass, and yet the weight of stone.

Yet, contrasting the art was the simple layout altogether. Each piece was vibrant and colorful, yet the overall structure was humble and muted, with wood bringing warmth to the building, but not distracting from the walls and how the rooms were divided. This was a building meant to house many, and one could see from the slight wear on the door frames that yes, this building had.

The knight led to a door protected by a fabric banner, upon which was the Kai family crest that had been lovingly stitched, and the quality showed. The knight lowered himself to his knees, and thus below the banner, and he carefully slid the door open.

"Lady Kai, the Lady Lionis has arrived and would have a word with you."

From within came the voice, partly distracted, but polite nonetheless. The sound of a pen came from a table inside. "Thank you. Show her in, Takahiro."

The knight bowed and stood. He moved the banner aside, revealing the room itself. Like the hallways, which were uncluttered and simple, the room of the baroness was humble and contrasted what power she had in the nation. There were paintings from artists, humble pieces of decoration that were about the room, each with a touch of love and appreciation in their design and carefully arranged, but on the wall, resting on two simple wooden pegs, was a worn scabbard of a slightly curved sword. From the hilt hung a small blue crystal affixed to a chain. One could easily be distracted by this artifact, which easily was older than everything else in this room, even the baroness.

The lady, in her blues and blacks, sat on a pillow, in a room with very few furnishings. She whispered something in traditional Ethian, and the servant with her bowed before excusing himself. When Evelyn entered, she stood and gestured to one of the seats that was available in the room.

"Welcome to Kaishin, your majesty. I trust the weather was favorable for your flight?"

Evelyn followed the guard into the compound, the warrior that she was was aware of the archer holes and the defences of the building as she went though it. She wouldnt know all of its strengths and weaknesses but she would know what she could see.

She would stop when they came to the Baronesses current room of resident before being allowed into the room. She would take a seat on a cushion before looking up at the Baroness and answering her "I took other means of transportation here but the weather does look nice enough for a flight back." she said to her "I've come to bring my son back with me, but before that I thought I would speak with you one last time about your choice" she said to her "I have thought upon it and I have asked for advice on the mater, and I've been getting mixed answers" she said to her as she leaned forward slightly "I was advised by one to occupy Ethe with what remains of the Lionis soldiers, then I was advised to coerce Bellris into attacking, then...who would advise me but Councilmen Roland Bellris then and to quote his words, just let Ethe go."

Evelyn said to her and then smiled "Clearly I'm not a fan of any of these since the first two go against my policies while the second one puts my and my son in future danger" she stopped "So I would like to pose something else. After looking at the records in the Lionis library early this morning I found that my family did put quite a lot into Ethe. The only things I want from Ethe before you declare independence is that I want to pull everything that my family owns from Ethe and since you wont allow me to claim Palude in exchange, I would instead like to request 20 miles of land in Palude. I've looked though some of the Lionis records from back about five years, which was about when we last got a report from the Watercress family that use to govern Palude prior to their disappearance and I do know such a thing is possible" Evelyn finally leaned back now "Such land does exist in Palude and I am aware that things do change in five years, I would be willing to speak with any families that might have moved onto this land and provide compensation if they choose to take it" she said to her, lowering her eyelids slightly "Its also no use to Ethe in the ways of mineing or food production so it wont be of any loss economically." another pause "It wont belong to the Empire but it wont belong to Ethe either, It will be for personal matters and a benefit to the populace of all Kingdoms once I enact plans if I am granted this."

Baroness Youkimi Kai

Records were tricky and dangerous things sometimes. Even the official record could be changed with a clever hand and convincing parchment. How many volumes of their history was still in confusion and were already lost? But, these thoughts aside, Evelyn was trying with the resources she had, and that was to her credit.

The servant returned, bringing a tray that bore a teapot and a few cups, each carefully painted with delicate flames that traced outlines of flowers. The servant set the tray on the floor and delicately poured for the ladies. He would also silently ask after whether sugar or cream was wanted for the tea. When he had served the initial cups, he bowed, and excused himself again after receiving thanks from Youkimi.

The baroness patiently listened to the requests as well as the reasoning that Evelyn was giving, and already the slant appeared in the words, which betrayed much of what Evelyn was feeling. Initial confusion from varied sources she turned to for council, one of which was named, and was an individual that Youkimi knew of. Interesting that he was quoted here.... and why him specifically? That seemed a strange note when the other two were nameless, here.

Evermore, this would be a question, but it need not be one that was voiced by the raven-haired woman.

Youkimi drank her tea in silence, thinking and contemplating what was being said. Fortunately, unlike Bellris, she could speak for her nation and not give the new empress the run-around about needing the united decision of a council.

It was a little worrisome, however, that Evelyn wanted land for personal reasons. Without an understanding for what that land would be for, it might lead one to believe that land was merely being taken by the crown for personal gain. Evelyn, however, was upfront about it, so Youkimi felt that the empress was not being malicious in her purposes. She was also grateful that the woman was upfront with her.

"If I may ask," Youkimi lowered the cup and balanced it gracefully on her fingers. The style of these teacups was different than those found in other nations, lacking handles. To avoid the heat, one needed to grip the cup closer to the edge, and almost with their fingertips. "Why do you think Ethe desires independence?"

That she was willing to talk about the details was helpful, but Youkimi wanted to know more about what Evelyn was thinking of this situation. She didn't want Ethe to leave the empire, as she was unduly afraid of the comfort of Lionis, thinking that they cared about what happened in Ethe. There were more things to be concerned about than what the nation recently impoverished by a volcano was up to.

Evelyn took one look at the tea cup and smiled slightly, thanking the servant but ultimately refusing, she knew her limits and such a cup wasn't possible for her use. It seemed far to delicate and she was out of practice when it came to delicate things.

At Youkimi's question Evelyn smiled at her, she had not been expecting it but it wasn't one that put her off "I do not know the true reason, you've never stated as to why you think it is in Ethe's best interests." she said to her "so I do apologize but I can only give my best guess" she watched as she let the cup balance on her finger tips "When Lionis was in power everything was in balance, as my families motto says: Protect and punish - Bring Justice, that is what my family brought to all the Kingdoms for two hundred years." she said to her "Even when we had Emperors that wavered from that motto we had uncles that took up the mantle when the rulers did not or Empresses that filled in the gaps in order to create a true and just monarch. If this continued without interruption I know factually that Bellris and now Ethe would not have any reason to do what they have and are trying to do."

Evelyn tapped her fingers "But as I have been told from my childhood. One week link in the chain of a mighty dynasty can bring it all toppling down. Though you have never seen House Lionis turn to such corruptions you have seen that such things are possible when Emperor Azazel came to power. You have seen that when that possibility becomes a reality that it is no longer beneficial for, in this case Ethe, to continue its passive continuance as part of the Empire my family forged. You rightfully believe that if this has happened once that it might, and will likely, happen again. Probably not in your lifetime but eventually it will, even if its in another two hundred years." Evelyn frowned "That trust that the Lionis Line built up for two hundred years means nothing to you because you weren’t alive those two hundred years in order to see what goods and what evils might have been committed, you were alive to see what happens when an incapable leader is in power and you want to spare the future of Ethe from such atrocities that you know to be true, weather its from secret reports you've have smuggled out of the capital or from first hand accounts" the longer Evelyn spoke the more blunt she became. She clearly wasn't an idiot, she knew that everyone in any field of power had some sort of spy some place

"Other reasons are likely that you want to build up Ethe as a better Kingdom, able to sustain itself as much as possible so as to make sure that betrayals and suffering can be kept to a minimum. Its also likely that you believe that Ethe can already fend for itself and does not need the backing of the Empire." Evelyns eyelids lowered, making her look slightly bored, but she wasn't "Pulling from the Empire will give Ethe a dignity it does not have with the Empire always looking at it from over its shoulder" She tilted her head slightly "Have I missed the mark or is this roughly what it is?" she asked her.

Now this is the Law of the Jungle -- as old and as true as the sky;
And the Wolf that shall keep it may prosper, but the Wolf that shall break it must die.
As the creeper that girdles the tree-trunk the Law runneth forward and back
For the strength of the Pack is the Wolf, and the strength of the Wolf is the Pack.
