Student Name: Lailah
Stage: Junior

Response: Lailah wasn't too much into baking or cooking. She could barely pay attention long enough to actually do it without burning something, but she was interested in learning at least and to see if she could do it! Which is why she had joined the baking class that the Academy offered as an elective. When they were assigned to take a recipe and add a twist to it, Lailah had decided on something that was... a bit easier than what others had done. Just some monster cookies! But since it was December, she decided to add some peppermint pieces in them so that they could have that nice mint twist!

When she had crunched up a few candy cane pieces and decided to use them in her recipe it... didn't turn out like she thought it would. The peppermint pieces wouldn't stay in the cookies and if they did, they melted to the point they were practically peppermint lava pockets!

She was concerned that she wouldn't be able to what she wanted with them, and that she would have to try something harder that weren't cookies, but when she had talked to a couple of other classmates about her concerns, they introduced her to something wonderful! There were semi-sweet mint chocolate chip pieces that she could use instead of the regular ones! Lailah didn't realize they even have those, and was amazed at what they came up with to make cooking easier! She would have to try it more often from now on!

And so, she used the mint chocolate chips instead of the regular ones, and the cookies came out perfect! Or at least according to her. Not too many others seemed to be interested in the cookies with the mint twist in them. All they could do was conclude was that Lailah had weird tastes.

Cucumber bread
Well Leto didn’t quite understand what had convinced him to try baking class. Maybe it was they hadn’t touched baking in life skills although when he pulled out the cucumber bread recipe he had to change out cucumbers to squash due to allergies and then he accidentally added salt instead of sugar when it called for sugar to the receipe. Suffice to say he was really happy this was just participation points. Thank goodness take out had been invented or hopefully health microwave meals. He wasn’t too good at baking obviously but couldn’t be good at everything right? Yeah so not telling Vega at all... or any of his siblings. Hopefully they didn’t want any homemade goods from him for gift giving occasions.

Cucumber cookies

Huginn stares at the thing that was supposed to be his assignment. He had been trying to make cucumber cookies. However he wasn’t really a fan of cucumbers so he had switched it out to a sweet squash only he had accidental added in an extra egg when he was making it and well suffice to say the outcome was the disaster he was staring at. Well one couldn’t be good at everything. Just one of those days he supposed. He did try to eat it but the smell from it was weird and he decided to be safe. So he just waited until he got the participation grade and slid it in the trash.

Oreo lava cake
Oran wasn’t really hopeful considering how the rest of the day was going but she was good at baking. She often baked with her sister in law to make tasty treats for everyone. So she tried an old faithful. Deciding to add only 1/8 of Oreo pudding and putting the other 1/8 of the called for pudding mix as creamy vanilla as her creative twist. Unfortunately her first mistake was using something with a beater and when she was setting the speed some one bumped into her causing her to switch the speed to high... suffice to say the bowl went flying across the room causing several students to duck. She sighed and hobbled over to pick it up. There was enough to bake a couple cookies. She glared at them daring them to be anything but perfect.

Carmelitas

Considering her last attempt at baking during her junior years oiche had decided she would take baking again so she could master it which she needed after her some what crazy day, so she gathered her supplies and read the instructions making sure to follow them to a tee. Well mostly to a tee, she used sea salt instead of regular salt and added vanilla. When it came out oiche could have sworn it glowed. Okay so it didn’t glow but it was perfect. Proof a girl like her who had started with no baking skills could learn how to bake. She bit into one of the pieces and happily ate it.

Response:

Ioan had spent a fair amount of time looking for a recipe to replicate for class, settling on some kind of bread recipe. He wasn't the best cook, but baking made more sense to him in terms of practice, and he really enjoyed making something fresh and delicious like breads and pastries. For class, he settled on what looked like an interesting bread pudding with cardamom and rose water, hoping the flavors would play off each other.

The first attempt, Ioan had followed the recipe with little deviation, only changing up some of the interior flavors -- swapping out raisins for currants for a different flavor, and removing the cardamom entirely so he could increase the rose water. However, when it came out of the oven the first time, the bread pudding had barely set at all. In fact, it almost came out... soupy.

"Did I add to much rose water?" He mumbled to himself, tasting the concoction anyway. He grimaced at the taste, and resolved to try again, starting from the beginning. Ioan stuck with his original substitutions, but he drew back significantly on the rose water, hoping the taste would still come through without so much... water.

The second time was a significant success, and Ioan had to stop himself from preening at the end-results. Instead, he ate his own bread pudding, and resolved to leave some others behind for the other students and professors to indulge in.

Student Name: Rosalie
Stage: Senior

Response: Rosalie had been eagerly awaiting this class. She'd heard about it as a junior from some of the other seniors that took the class. So, when her teacher announced it that very day in class, she wasted no time in pulling up the recipe she wanted online. Originally meant as a lavender shortbread cookie recipe, with some more specific searches, she managed to find one that was a lavender and rosemary shortbread cookie! Armed with flower shaped cookie cutters, she got to work. She started by mixing up the batter and sprinkling in the fresh lavender and rosemary that she'd brought into class just for this exercise.

Then, adding a sprinkle of this and a bit of that, the batter started to turn into a workable dough, which she rolled out and used her daisy shaped cookie-cutters. Occasionally, she pressed a sprig of lavender or rosemary onto the cookies for an extra touch, before she slid them onto a cookie sheet. She used the leftover dough to create tiny leaves, shaping them with her hands the best that she could. Then, she placed the tray with flowers and leaves into the oven.

She set the timer and waited. And waited. And wai-there was the timer! Quickly putting on oven mitts, she brought out the tray and let them sit for a bit, smiling at their golden brown color. Thrilled that it had worked out so well, after they had been left to cool, she began to remove them from the cookie tray and plate them, so that her teacher could come see them and try one for herself. With how well they came out, she just hoped she had enough for her classmates!
