Beth's relief at not being forced to tramp through the snow was short lived as right on the heels of their decision, they were beset by birds. She jumped from her chair with a frightened squeak and decided that her best bet was to fortify the building. She had finally gotten some practice with her whip in, but she did not consider one bird sufficient to improve her skills enough to help with the flock. She quickly ran to the outside wall closest to the civilians. Better to be safe, at the last line of defense. She found part of the wall that had been left alone but one good hit seemed enough to break through. She grabbed a few chairs that were deemed too unsturdy to trust and stacked them on top of one another.

With a shrug, Rob contemplated his options. He wasn't that surprised to find more of his fellow Chosen wanted to stay in the hotel and defend it from the birds, but he wasn't that disappointed in the decision either, despite voting to go out into the snow and look for more survivors. There were likely more civilians inside the hotel than outside, truth be told, and they could actually do more from the relative safety of the hotel. Which meant it needed reinforcing. There were enough Chosen fighting the birds that were getting through -- he could be spared to further fortify the building, at least for now. "Okay." He gave Sid a quick hug as she kissed his cheek, then he fitted the back sheath of the greatsword across his body again, in case he needed it. "I'm going to go patch a few holes." Spotting a small table and a chair, he grabbed them and dragged them over to a broken window that had been covered with one of those heavy shower curtains. The plastic looked a little shredded on the top, but on the bottom had come completely loose, flapping gently in the cold breeze. He shoved the shower curtain aside and jammed the table in the opening, legs out, pushing with all his strength to make sure it was good and stuck in there. That should deter the bastards for a little while, at least. Looking around, he saw Sid and a number of other archers take up position and fire. Good, the place was being defended well. He dragged the chair behind him, looking for more damage to patch up. 216 HP

Mal's short thrust through the patch of wall he was defending didn't do much good; either the bird got out of the way or Mal's aim was off. Either way, he growled in frustration and readied himself to wait for the next bird.

Tara's next shot only managed to graze a bird, but at least it hit. She looked around a bit. Some of the Chosen were fighting, others were working on trying to fortify the hotel further. Both were good options--she just had too much energy and anger to burn right now. A weapon in her hand felt more suitable than trying to assist with the fortifications.

With the obvious fact that her skills as an attacker were less than useless compared to the others, Misha drew back from her gap in the defenses to allow another to step in. She bit her lip for a moment, then exhaled slowly in an attempt to let the anger go.
Turning on her heel, she headed towards the chair she had previously been using. She set her buckler atop it and then, slowly, began dragging the piece towards a tilting piece of plywood that she could only assume covered a window. Fortification was something she could do. It would keep her mind off things.

Beth moved further back, yanking a mattress with her. It was a little thin, clearly too thin to be thought useful, but at this point, Beth was grabbing anything she could. She wedged it against an aperture that would make for a good fall back point but until it was needed, only served as a weak spot. It would buy precious time where it was.

Breathing deeply, Mathilda walked through the hotel, looking at openings and weaknesses. When she turned a corner, she saw two birds, picking at a board. Glaring, she quickly brought down dagger, the blade going through both birds.

Maybe he could find more use for these remaining towels...
Zebulon wheeled the cart through the hotel, looking for a place where he could make better use of these towels. When he found a particularly drafty looking window, he decided that they might be best used here. First, he grabbed a few and jammed them into where he saw gaps in the frame, making the window less likely to move around or get popped out by a particularly determined bird.
Then, he took some of the larger towels and hung them up over the curtain rod to block out some of the wind and make it less likely the birds would be able to tell they were in there. He didn't know if the birds just attacked randomly or specifically aimed at humans, but perhaps it would help if they couldn't tell where humans were.

Sidney James - Bow: Base Damage 6
Drawing back the arrow she had notched, Sid aimed and released again. This time, there was the satisfaction of seeing it strike true and one of the birds wobble in its flight, dropping out of the attack. Her lips curled in a pleased smirk and she flicked a glance back to trace Rob’s progress.
He’d chosen to fortify, which wasn’t a bad thing. They would need both to keep this place defended, and her bow had a lot better range, even if his sword did more damage.
Fighting alongside the other chosen like this… she could feel almost bonded with them. They were doing this together, defending each other and the people here. She’d never had that before… there had only ever been less than a handful of people she had felt she could trust. She wasn’t entirely sure how to feel about it.

Tara swore when the bird she'd been trying to hit dodged her shot, and no other bird got caught in the arrow's path that she saw. Limited number of arrows meant her shots had to count--otherwise she'd have to be trying to fashion more arrows on the fly there...
Or run out and collect arrows.
Yeah. She didn't think that would go over well. Something she'd have to make sure she packed in her emergency bag though, she told herself: a fletching kit, and bundles of extra arrows, if possible. Also. Learn how to fletch in the first place. Ha.

Rob wasn't sure he could actually use the chair, but he continued to drag it along with him as he searched for more damage to the hotel to patch up. Spotting a hole higher up in the wall, he pulled the chair in position to stand on and looked around for something to stuff in there. Then it occurred to him. Couch cushions! If not the cushions themselves, then at least the padding beneath the upholstery.
He dashed over to a nearby settee that hadn't been completely dismantled and tore into the cover, ripping out some of the heavy batting and foam beneath it. Running back to his chair, he hopped up on it and crammed the padding into the hole, packing it as tightly as he could.

Brian closed his eyes hard, wavered on his feet, shook his head, and finally opened them again. Fine. All of the Chosen frightened about a well-fortified building, all the ones afraid to go outside again, they had signed those civilians' death warrants. He had tried. Maybe there would be some time after to go digging, but he doubted it would do them much good without dogs and shovels and special equipment.
Fine. He disagreed wholeheartedly. He hated this, but you didn't deny orders. With his jaw set and his face in a rather unpleasant shade of emotionlessness, he began to attack the birds with renewed fury.

"s**t," was Ewan's first word of choice, as the sudden rumbling in the air signified that the birds, too, had heard their choice. It was like they knew that the Chosen were staying put in the hotel.
Whoever was out there on the mountain was very likely dead. The reality of it wasn't lost on Ewan, but having come from years in a correctional facility, these things happened. People died -- through their own misfortune, or stupid choices, or stupid, random happenstance. Like birds.
He broke a couple of already-broken chairs over his knee with quick, decisive movements, and then set to work fortifying the hotel, trying to patch up holes that were getting bigger. Let other people patch up the newer, smaller things. He wanted to prevent anything bird-sized from getting in.

Cat picked up her bow and ran to a window being assaulted by their feathered foes and scoweled as she drew back an arrow. The time for talking over, it was time to take action! She released her arrow as a bronze beak broke through the window's blockade- the bird shrieking as the arrow struck it and retreating, only to be replaced by another horrid maw.

It seemed that they would be staying in the hotel. He couldn't blame the others for deciding to stay here. There were too many problems with going out to check for the survivors. Too bad they couldn't warn them out there that an avalanche was coming. That was the only problem he had with this plan but he wasn't in charge and wasn't sure how everything worked anyway, so he couldn't go and demand that they do what he said.
However, it seemed that they had managed to make their decision just in time as the birds seemed to be gathering for one final attack. They didn't seem to be concerned with stragglers. All he could do was hope that the avalanche would be effective.
Now though was the time to fortify the hotel. He would attack when he felt he had done as much as he could to strengthen the hotel against attacks. And with that he started to gather materials to block the windows and doors.
