User ImageIt'd seemed like they'd wandered enough to get themselves lost, well, at least Rowan had wandered enough to do so. He revealed that it'd probably best to take a break now, and Alistair agreed, helping the kid set up camp. The man was getting ready to make some tea for himself when the younger Knight spoke. Well, this was a pleasant surprise, Rowan was apologizing for allowing them to get lost. It took Alistair a moment to recover before he responded. "Happens to the best of us."

It was then that the kid further elaborated. He admitted being troubled by his past, or perhaps this was the result of who he was being in the present. Which really had a greater weight on the other? Alistair remembered seeing him soon after being brought back by Blake, checking up on his younger sibling before Cheyenne had closed the spell. He wondered what he'd do in the same situation, if his wife brought him back. It's not like he could relate. "I understand. It's not as though they aren't there for you to return to, but it isn't as if you could without possible issue. Honestly, I wouldn't know what to do in your situation, either, but..." his voice trailed off for a moment. Alistair took a sip of his tea. He was bad at things like this. "I don't think it's in anyone's best interest if you continue believing this isn't a life worth living. Perhaps it isn't now, but you can always make it one. It's not as though you don't have that option." He was smart enough to not cause his previous family any extra pain by approaching his sister, by pretending to be someone else when Blake brought him back. Alistair might've done something similar in his shoes, but what he was doing now wouldn't aid anyone in the long run. "You've been brought back from the dead. It'd be a shame to waste that."

Alistair, himself, had met death quite a few times, nearly dying for various reasons. The experience was eye-opening, and the man had vowed at a very young age to live his life to the fullest. This, however, was't a second chance, Rowan couldn't be who he was, magically return to his world and life as though nothing happened. He didn't escape death but lost to it. The young man's being here now was only because of his meddling daughter. Alistair sighed. Despite his new life being an affront to nature and the ways of the world, he might as well roll with it. Blake's success in doing so was a "miracle". He and Cheyenne had never thought that'd be the case when they gave her the tools necessary to do so.

Rowan simply looked at the ground as he listened to what Alistair had to say to him, the man explaining exactly what sort of situation that Rowan was in. Even if I wanted to live some kind of new life... how could I with everything that's going on? My own Mage is directly connected to my former life... and how is that going to help anything? I'm supposed to live this new life to the fullest while still being surrounded by my past like this? Rowan thought to himself, his eyes narrowing as he stared at the ground feeling a lot of frustration building up. "So what... I'm just supposed to live a new life and be a different person forever? Forget it all?" He muttered to himself, upset at what this conversation had turned into. "And what? I'm supposed to live happily ever after with Blake and make her dream of having some sort of heroic Knight come true!? I'm sorry, but that's not who I am. That's not how the world works." Rowan stated to Alistair this time, a bit of anger and bitterness starting to show itself in his voice. "I think I'm done with this conversation. I don't want to think about that woman..." Rowan stated, standing up and gathering up their supplies.

He wanted to get moving as soon as possible so that they could cover some ground and get his mind off of the current situation. After about twenty minutes of travel, the two came across something rather strange, which was on their map for some reason as well. It was a chest that was half buried with shovels laying around it. Obviously someone had been trying to hide something in the forest when they had been attacked. Rowan looked at it for a second and then picked up a shovel. After about thirty minutes of digging, he uncovered the treasure chest and opened it up to find out what was inside. What he was greeted with was a belt of some sort with a nice design to it. While it was not much, he was grateful to have found something in the last eight hours of searching. "Having something to show for all our hard work is definitely a relief." Rowan stated, content at having discovered the belt. Despite his gratitude, he could not help but wonder why these people were going to such lengths to hide this treasure from sight.

"I don't know why they were trying to bury this thing... but we should get going before whatever got them comes back looking for more people." Rowan stated, taking the belt and replacing one of his old ones with it. Unlike the coat, this was something that he could wear all the time without having too much difficulty. After all, not every place was in the middle of the mountains or Winter. "Alright boy, just a little bit longer. Then you can rest for the day. At least you're not having to carry anything today." Rowan stated to the bear, patting it on the side gently. For some odd reason he was starting to get attached to the creature, and a side of Rowan that was hardly seen was starting to show. It was genuine care for something. "Alright, let's go!" Rowan called out to Alistair, climbing up onto the bear and beginning to ride off in a direction. Their journey was not going to end here, nor were they the subject of absolute back luck today. Maybe whatever cloud was plaguing them had finally cleared up enough to show them some fortune. He could only hope that they remained so lucky.

After traveling around thirty or so minutes through the forest, Rowan quickly realized that their luck had not changed at all in the slightest. It was simply a small mistake on the world's part for granting them a slight bit of treasure for all their hard work during the day. Now, they were back on track with the same results as six hours ago. Absolutely nothing. There was not a trace of creatures around, and it seemed as if the world had just been wiped clean of anything. It was so silent, that Rowan thought that they might have actually stumbled upon something without even realizing it. If that was the case, however, then surely they would have seen something by now. Soon, he discovered exactly what that something was. About the forty minute mark, he discovered strands of silk lining the ground, large strands. It made him feel uncomfortable, almost like he was walking into the same situation he usually did in the forest. As he continued forward, he realized that it was, indeed, the exact same situation he was so used to. They were spider webs, and there was a lot of them around the area.

"Well, I think I know what took out those people near the treasure chest. I was hoping it wasn't this.... but it seems like this forest's most notorious creature is behind everything once again." Rowan stated, referring to the spiders that inhabited this forest and attacked in large groups. They were the most common type of enemy to find here aside from wolves, and they were also the enemy that most commonly obliterated exploration parties. This was because spiders were experts at sneak attacks, and most parties were not prepared for such things when they set out on journeys. They are used to creatures walking up and fighting them, or making a lot of noise when approaching. Spiders, however, silently descended from trees or randomly popped out of holes in the ground to drag travelers to their deaths. They were, by far, the strangest and most dangerous creatures in this forest. Some, however, would argue that and say that the dragons were. Rowan disagreed with these claims though. "Keep an eye out. We don't want to get jumped by these things."

User ImageThe kids reaction cemented just how bad this man was at talking to people. This is why you have few friends, Alistair. "It's not about that girl's naive ideals. All I'm saying is that you have the option to do what you want, nothing more." When Rowan said he was finished with the conversation, Alistair dropped it, however. For the next while, the air was pretty tense between them.

Fortunately, things were looking up when the two came upon a dig site. Someone had been trying to hide a chest. Inside was a some sort of belt. To the naked eye, it seemed pretty average, but there had to be a reason behind the actions of whoever had been attempting to bury it. "Something tells me that it's either expensive or embued with whatever properties it may or may not have," the man murmured shrugging. "You're right. We should keep moving, though."

It was a little while before the two came upon the trail of what could only be assumed to be a spider, multiple, probably. The webs were far too numerous and large...they were probably giant. The man sighed, a little frustrated. "If they show up, we should eradicate them. Otherwise, they'll keep attacking travelers." Alistair grabbed one of his chakrams, ready to defend himself if the spiders did, indeed, try to get a preemptive move on them.

After following the spider webs quite a ways, Rowan and Alistair finally stumbled upon where the spiders had decided to set up their living space. It was a dungeon of all things, covered with webs and spiders everywhere. On trees, the ground, even suspended midair by strands of webbing. There were numerous spiders... yet they did not seem to be that big. In fact, they just seemed to have the advantage in numbers. "That means they're all too weak to do anything to either of us. Finally, a dungeon that doesn't look like it's falling apart and enemies that we can tear through. They may be spiders, but at least I know how to fight them pretty well." Rowan thought to himself, hopping down from the bear and moving behind a tree as he watched the creatures from afar. If he wanted to do this right, then he would have to kill most of them and send them running in panic. If he did that, then Alistair could finish off the rest of them while they were too preoccupied with running away from the two of them. "Alright, you take out the stragglers and runners. I'm going to run in and cause some mayhem." Rowan stated to them an, moving slightly from behind the tree.

It did not take him long to send all the creatures scattering about and trying to get away from him as quickly as possible. After running through the center of their little platoon they created, he started mowing through them with his dimension warping ability, killing two or three at a time as he dashed through them. They quickly realized that whatever sort of battle this was, it was not going to be a winning one. Especially considering how deadly the man seemed to be. To preserve their life in some way, many of them started running off as quickly as they could, some even leaving behind the food they had wrapped in their webbing. It was too dangerous for them to stick around and try to fight the young man. By the time he made it into the dungeon, he realized that he had not exactly made one calculation. Their was a mother to this faction of spiders, and it was actually rather big. As such, he had a very difficult time fighting her. Not only was she huge, but she was also very quick. The two of them fought for what seemed like twenty minutes, most of which was Rowan using dimension warping to keep her from murdering him outright. After a long, difficult battle, however, he stood atop her body victorious over the creature. "I hate fighting spiders... You're probably the most annoying enemy in this forest."

Walking into the depths of the dungeon, he finally discovered his prize and claimed it with some discontent. While he had been expecting something worth the effort it took to fight the dungeon, all he had found was a jewel that had been hidden away within it. The jewel did not even have anything to do with the spiders at all, not even seeming to be remotely arachnid-shaped. I guess they must have taken over this place after whoever built it hid this jewel here. Those people were probably turned into food for these things.... What a terrible way to go... Rowan thought to himself, feeling as if the creatures had dealt and unfair fate to whatever travelers or forest-dwellers had come across them. Now, however, the roads should be a little bit safer with this little spider-nest being obliterated. With that in mind, Rowan made his way out of the dungeon, eventually finding his way out of it and meeting up with Alistair. "We got a jewel out of it. Definitely not the best thing in the world, but at least it's something." He stated to him, putting the jewel away in one of the bags and climbing on top of the polar bear. "Let's get out of here. I'm sure all that noise attracted something." He stated to Alistair, leading the bear to start walking in a direction away from the dungeon. If they wanted to make it in this forest, they needed to play it smart. Aside from the hour it took them to find the place, they also lost an hour exploring the dungeon.

After their little adventure with the spiders, Rowan was starting to think that their adventure was finally starting to pick up for once. Aside from the large amount of fighting that he just partook in, there were also some good rewards that he managed to get, and they seemed to be making good time. If this keeps up, we might be able to pay rent for the next two years. I'm sure Blake would be happy if we managed to get that much money built up. Rowan thought to himself, feeling as if he was finally contributing to their living situation at least a little bit. For the past few months, he had been living with Blake solely on the money that she was making from her job. With this, however, they would be living in good conditions for quite a while. Maybe they could even try to purchase a house if he got some more gold or items. A house? What.... what am I thinking? I.... I don't wanna live like that. Especially not with someone I can barely stand being around. I was supposed to help her heal, not stick around and babysit her for this long. Why am I even considering this kind of stuff? Is it because of the old man? Rowan thought to himself, looking back at Alistair with a slightly disgruntled expression.

After about an hour of exploring, he noticed that the trees were starting to thin out considerably and turn into trees that he had never seen before. Soon, the ground was shifting from grassy to mostly dirt, and from there it turned into sand of all things. Before he knew it, they had ended up just outside the forest and staring into a vast, desert-like area with nothing but rocks, sand dunes, and canyons for miles. "What the.... just what is this place supposed to be? Where are we?" Rowan asked, mostly himself, as he stared around at the barren landscape. If he thought the snowy mountains seemed empty, this place made it seem like a land brimming with life. "It's so empty.... and there's hardly any plants." Rowan stated, hopping off of the polar bear and walking around for a little bit. This place was new, and something he had never before seen. Such a strange place was bound to fascinate him at least a little bit. Within four days they had discovered two new lands and a kingdom. Just what sort of journey were the two of them having right now?

"I don't think it's safe to be exploring this place right now. Making camp out here without knowing anything about it will just end up getting the two of us killed probably." Rowan informed Alistair, climbing back on top of the polar bear and directing the creature back towards the forest. "We'll search the edge of the forest a bit, and then we'll come back here tomorrow and explore this... whatever this is. I'm sure that there's going to be a lot of stuff here." Rowan stated, looking out at the desert as the bear began to walk towards the forest once again. "I think.... I prefer it somehow. It's almost like.... it's my natural habitat. Then again, maybe that's some sentimental crap that I'm starting to think. Geez.... I don't want that idiot's ideas rubbing off on me. I don't wanna be that way at all." Rowan began stating, getting a bit upset that he may be starting to sound like Blake all of a sudden. "I guess we'll have something else to send them a message about soon. We better find some more stuff worth talking about before we send another message." Rowan stated, trying to make general conversation once again.

User ImageAlistair sighed when he saw the dungeon riddled with arachnids. They were everywhere. So they wouldn't be spotted, he moved behind some brush for cover. "Sounds like a plan." As soon as Rowan charged forward, the creatures instantly scattered. Alistair moved from his cover before throwing one of his chakrams. It lodged into the face of right before he stepped to decapitate another. As the kid continued on, more and more of the spiders made their way out the dungeon. Their sheer numbers were annoying, but Alistair ended up dismember or beating on them all. Rowan returned from the dungeon with a gem in his hands. "Perhaps it'll sell for something if it doesn't have any magical properties," the man murmured, wiping some of the spider's thick blood from his coat.

Soon, he wouldn't need it. As they continued on their journey, the forest was becoming less thick and much hotter. Grass devolved into dirt, and soon they could see sand for miles. This place was absolutely devoid of life, and he was so warm that he may've even considered taking off his coat. Did they just find the other end of two extremes? Alistair was slightly, only slightly, less surprised by this places existence, remembering rumors of a flaming man from a land of sands. "I've heard of this place, but no one has outright reported its existence to the Kingdom yet." At least the mountains looked nice. This place was wholly barren. "Agreed. It'd be best to camp in an environment with which we're familiar. How do you think our new friend will fair here?" he asked as they turned back toward the outskirts of the forest.

Alistair chuckled when the mentioned that this place could be his natural habitat. Barren and dry, funny, but he said something about an idiot's ideas, and he could only assume Rowan was talking about his Mage. "I would say positivity has never killed anyone, but I'd be wrong if I did."

Living Eternally

~Rowan~

"There used to be a point to everything, but since that day I can't seem to find myself caring about anything anymore. It's not because I don't want to, but because it's best if I don't."

Rowan was surprised when the ground sudden gave way underneath him and the dire polar bear. He figured that they would suffer a nasty fall until the bear grabbed onto the edge of the ground and Rowan fell backwards into the pit. The creature, struggling, held onto the edge of the pit and kept half of its body on the ground while screeches sounded from overhead. The bear began barking as Rowan picked himself up, dusting off his clothes as he looked up towards the sky very irritated. "Who puts a pit trap here of all places!? Who does that!?" He shouted angrily, upset by what was happening. Meanwhile, above ground, the dragons landed all around the place, surrounding the group and looking towards Alistair hungry. They were definitely babies, yet they were still dangerous and could take down even Knights if they were to suddenly get serious. They slowly began to walk towards Alistair while Rowan continued to try to climb out of the hole. The situation, overall, seemed to be a rather hopeless one. That was, of course, until Rowan did manage to get out of the trap.

Grabbing onto the back of his bear, Rowan began to climb up the creature in an attempt to use it to get out of the hole. After a few attempts, he managed to make his way up the bear's back and climb out of the hole. "Finally, I thought I'd never get out of that thing.... geez." He stated in exasperation, looking towards the creatures that had descended from the sky. As soon as Rowan was out of the hole, however, the baby dragons froze and simply stared at him in terror, unsure of their life choices. While younglings and adult dragons ignored their fear to fight Rowan, seeing him as their mortal enemy, baby dragons were governed more on basic instinct, and that instinct told them that they should be utterly afraid of whatever it was that was equipped to Rowan's arm. As such, they immediately began squawking and running about, unsure of what to do. Within a few minutes, the creatures began flying off in different directions to get away from the young man as quickly as they possibly could. Watching them, Rowan simply sighed as he helped his dire bear get out of the hole. "I guess Gram does have its... strange benefits.... from time to time."

After a good five minutes of helping his bear, Rowan finally managed to free the bear from the hole, the creature barking and hugging him for saving it. "Alright, alright. I get it. You're happy. No need to freak out on me." Rowan stated, trying to get the creature off of him, yet he was clearly not upset by the creature's gratitude. Sighing, he started to set up camp on the edge of the forest, getting everything ready for a night of rest. "I would have liked to do something before we set down for the night, but I guess whoever set that trap had other things in mind. I wonder if they got eaten by those dragons while making it. That would make a lot of sense to be honest. It would explain why it was in the middle of nowhere with no one around to try and make use of it." Rowan conversed with Alistair, debating the usefulness of such a trap. This whole day was pretty tiring to be honest, especially since everything happened at the very end with nothing happening at the beginning of the day. Things like that were always tiring. Let's just hope the desert's going to be more... prosperous. Rowan thought to himself, beginning to cook some food for the two of them.

"Even if you tell me that there was a point to bringing me back, that still doesn't seem to mean anything to me. All I am is a weapon, and that was all I was trained to be, since the beginning."

Oh no! You've fallen into a trap and alerted a nearby enemy!

Walking along the path away from the desert, you suddenly hear the sound of cracking as leaves and brush fall under Rowan, releasing him into the depths of a pit trap. Overhead, you hear a familiar screeching. There are nine baby dragons coming for you. Although children, they're still rather large creatures. Prepare for a fight!

...Unless you are literally the bane of dragons.

User ImageThe man's eyes widened when the ground cracked and the bear dropped into a pit trap with Rowan on it before the thing caught itself and Rowan fell. Alistair ran up to the edge before hearing the screeches of juvenile dragons that began landing all around the hole. The man slowly reached for his chakrams as the bear tried to pull itself up, the dragons snapping ravenously at the air. "You okay?" he asked before hearing the kid shout exasperatedly about the situation. "Because we have a bit of a situation here." The dragons had Alistair backed up toward the pit. He ground his teeth. These would be easy if he'd had more mana from Cheyenne, but there were quite a few of them, and Rowan was trapped in a hole. He'd have to take these things on himself.

Alistair spun on his heels when he heard Rowan's voice above the hole. H-had he climbed up the bear?! The man stared at him for a moment before the dragons started freaking out. Their reaction brought Alistair's memory back when he saw Rowan face the dragon the first time. The thing had started acting up when he realized exactly what was going on. Was this the same? It must have been Gram. All nine dragons screeched as they took off as quickly as possible. Alistair gave out a rather relieved laugh. "Yeah, it does." This bear, this kid, these dragons... the man sighed, worried about the day ahead of them tomorrow. At least they had a winter season in Carmillion and the forest so snow wasn't totally unknown, but this new place...all Alistair knew was that it was covered in sand.
