Phantoms of the PastShiloh was silent, even after Jamie spoke. It wasn't that he was at a loss for words, or even that he found it necessary to let everything sink in, but... there was something tranquil about the absence of sound. No, that was wrong, it wasn't a total absence; there was gentle breaking, the occasional shuffle when someones blanket moved. Shiloh didn't mind.
"From now on, yeah." he sounded so much more tired than he did earlier, and not in the cute sleepy sort of way. This was a more serious exhaustion. In the same vein, he was content. "We'll look out for each other, 'kay Jame?"

Glub Glub"Wow... I never thought about that. Jeanie and Jamie..." Looking both perplexed and amused, he shook his head. "Noooo, there's no theme. That... that would be too hard. There's too many. Just... look at all the ones you drew already." He added the last part for emphasis, because honestly, Shiloh hadn't even scratched the surface and he'd already drawn so many.
"But, um... they do all have names, though. Except this guy..." Huffing a bit as he pushed himself up, he walked over to a considerably smaller tank housing only one fish. "I just got him from the breeder so, um, he's in quarantine. Still needs a name, too." He was a pearl gourami with a rather impressively bright splotch on his chest.

Phantoms of the PastDespite having tried to avoid silence a moment ago, Jamie did nothing to interrupt the peace Shiloh let fall between them. It wasn't comfortable in every single sense of the word, but there was something sobering about it that made it feel okay. For once, the silence didn't make him awkward. Instead, he simply waited for Shiloh's reply.
"Yeah..." he responded, tired too, tired enough to understand the exhaustion. "We will. Promise." It would take some time for Jamie to let all of his guilt go whenever he needed Shiloh in the middle of the night, but from now on he'd work towards not hesitating to call. They would look out for each other.
"Do you think... you could get back to sleep?"

Glub GlubShiloh looked down at the paper. Huh. Guess he had drawn a lot.
Well whatever. Shiloh watches Jamie as he meandered around, actually getting up to follow him to the tiny tank. "Why you gotta quarantine him like that?" honestly, Shiloh could probably guess; diseases and all of that—but Jamie was fun to tease, "I bet he's all lonely over here. Poor guy." he tapped at the glass a little, but stopped himself from continuing it.
"I'm thinking Phineas." Shiloh announced, "'Cause, like, he's got fins y'know?"

Phantoms of the PastIt was a bizarre pact that Shiloh wasn't expecting to forge, but here they were. He couldn't say he was mad about it really; it was scary, but it was a first step. Jamie was someone he felt he could maybe trust, and it was obvious that Jamie needed someone to be there for him too. They could help each other, support each other. What a funny thought.
"Me? You kiddin'?" Shiloh laughed a little, breaking any tension that may have lingered from before, "'Course I could. You're the one that woke up from a nightmare." Which, well, was true.
"What about you?"

Glub Glub"Oh, um..." Jamie was seconds away from answering Shiloh's question, but then he puffed out his cheeks, looking a bit indignant. "H-He won't be alone forever," he promised with a huff, stooping a little to better see into the tank. The fish looked completely unbothered as he swam around, even with Shiloh's tapping, all he did was lazily drift to the back. If Jamie was bothered by the tapping, he didn't comment (thankfully, Shiloh had stopped quick enough). "He's gonna go in that one over there."
"Phineas..." he repeated, then turned to look at Shiloh, a dumb smile on his face. "That... That's r-really cute! Phineas. That's your name, little guy." Sure, Jamie hadn't been expecting Shiloh to offer up a suggestion, but it was obvious he was pleased about it.

Phantoms of the PastAdmittedly, Shiloh's laugh was definitely enough to lighten the mood. The fear and self-loathing from earlier had largely left him, and though they'd taken a small detour into serious territory, Jamie still felt at ease after the horror he'd been feeling when the call first started. "That's true," he agreed, but didn't sound put off by the reminder. Yeah, he'd had a nightmare, but Shiloh had been there for him.
"I think I could now though..." Cue that perfectly timed yawn. "I'm feeling kinda tired... Maybe... we should both get some sleep and talk later."

Glub GlubShiloh looked over at the tank in question. "I think he'll like it," he said offhandedly. When he turned back to Jamie, he was smiling and sparkling and it caught Shiloh off guard for a second. Who'd have thought that kid he met at 3am on some street corner would turn out to be this sort of person. He reached out and ruffled his hair playfully.
Shiloh couldn't help it.
"'Course it's a cute name. I wouldn't'a said it if I didn't think so."

Phantoms of the PastJamie was tired. Shiloh was tired. Things would be okay, if the tone of Jamie's voice was anything to go by.
"I think that'd be nice." he murmured, voice drawling back into a calm exhaustion once again. "Tomorrow, yeah?" of course they'd talk tomorrow. In the short time they've known each other, 'tomorrow' had become a place of comfort for Shiloh. If the present sucked, there was always the next day, there was always the future. Jamie would be there.
"'Night, Jamie."

Glub GlubThe startled expression on his face hardly lasted long enough to matter before a pleased one took over and a small laugh slipped out. If there was one thing Jamie liked, it was physical affection. Both of his parents were very touchy, but peers... Well, back in the day, if someone touched Jamie they were usually shoving him. This sort of kindness, just a simple hair ruffle, was more significant to him than Shiloh probably knew.
"It's so cute," he repeated, practically beaming. "Oh, and um, I mean I don't wanna interrupt your drawing, but... maybe we should finish with Glubby's tank. Since you suggested it I... I'm kinda... excited."

Phantoms of the Past"Tomorrow... definitely. Goodnight, Shiloh." There was a smile in Jamie's voice as he spoke and a slight hesitation before he pulled the phone from his ear and hung up. In the fading light of the screen as it went from bright to dim to darkness, he gave himself a moment to let everything settle. There were a lot of things they'd need to talk about, he thought, a lot of unanswered questions.
Right now, though, what mattered is they both had a chance to rest. What mattered is they knew they had each other to talk to when the sun finally rose on a new day. Jamie was satisfied and happy and when he laid his head back down on his pillow, sleep graciously took him quickly. For the rest of the night, he didn't dream.

Phantoms of the PastShiloh was tired, but he didn't go to sleep right away.
He didn't really think, either. He laid there, eyes closed, hand still carefully cradling his phone. There wasn't another text, and his phone never buzzed with another incoming call. All quiet on the western front over here.
Yeah, Shiloh was waiting to see if Jamie called back, just in case. After a couple minutes (maybe... maybe thirty minutes) Shiloh finally threw in the towel, called it quits. Jamie was alright, and he yawned.
TEXT TO JAMIE kno ur sleepin so i hope ths dosnt wake u but i hope u sleep good. im here if u need anythin. thnkin of u ok? ttyl Shiloh hit send and closed his eyes again. After a few more beats of silence, he gently lulled himself back to sleep.

Glub GlubShiloh was glad that the action was well received, or else he probably wouldn't have tried to touch Jamie again for a long time.
"That's fine." he looked to the half filled tank, "Honestly, I was going to suggest we at least fill the thing before I started drawing, but..." and he laughed, "You just looked so damn excited."
He set the notebook down, going over to retrieve the hose again.

Glub Glub"I was really excited..." Giving in and being honest, Jamie looked sheepish, but was still smiling. "It's just... so cool, y'know? But... now it's back to business!" Serious face, serious face... except Jamie couldn't hold it very long at all. Letting out a laugh, he trotted out of the room to start the water back up.
"I um... would love to see you draw more, though... Sometime." As he came back around the corner and into the room, he'd obviously settled down, but that smile wouldn't go away. Admittedly, it felt nice to keep grinning, like a the weight of years of holding back were slowly beginning to lift from his shoulders. Jamie was having such a good time.

Glub Glub"Obviously." he said with a tiny laugh as Jamie wandered on to rectify the water situation. Shiloh stood there dutifully with the hose.
"Sure, sure." he could make time for that, even if it meant bending some personal rules and making amends with himself. Usually he hated the feeling of someone breathing down his neck. With Oliver, he was content to let him watch. Jamie gave off the same vibe. Friendship was weird, but decidedly nice.
"Maybe after we get the tank and the fish all set up." never mind that it would likely take a few hours, if not longer (Shiloh didn't know much about fish, admittedly).
