At the familiar voice and termed 'Princess', Autumn turned around, and found Lucas approaching! Smiling despite herself, she waved excitedly, and jogged over to meet him halfway. He really hadn't struck her as the kind of guy to come to this kind of thing, but hey! A pleasant surprise indeed.

"I'm tired, but I'm better. Talked some s**t out with a friend. Got some sleep," she admitted, smiling sheepishly. At the offer of the pastry, Autumn gladly snatched it, and took a bite.

...What? She ******** loved bread. Even if bread made you fat.

"What about you, Mister Steed?"

Nasir was not really pleased to see that look from Cid at either himself or Lucas. Not everyone was comfortable with slightly eerie sounds and after the fog and the creepy fliers ...

Lucas speaking distracted him from saying something to Cid, the hard glint in his face flickering away to something softer. "Ah, okay. Take care! See you later." Hopefully the man actually did come back by later, his abrupt leaving was ...

The humming ended as abruptly as it started and Nasir sighed. His fingers were still tangled with Wil's and he gave him a squeeze back. "Just wait," he said half-jokingly, "we'll find out this was another bit of performance art." Instead of taking his seat again, Nasir was sitting down on the ground next to Wil while the other was in his seat.

Cid ended up having to stop himself from messing his hair up, instead rubbing a hand along the side of his neck. Mostly because he may have slightly overreacted but it was a rare employee that would stay and put up with him and ...

Not the time. He would have to apologize to Lucas later. For now, he crouched down briefly to check on Kally. "You just hunker down here for a bit longer. That humming has stopped and looks like the detective is heading towards the flower booth."

Lucas flashed a grin, pleased to see her smiling and much more relaxed. "That's great to hear. It's important to get good rest, Princess. Beauty sleep and all."

And just like that, there was some sort of weird completed circle of the day; he couldn't explain it, but with the humming suddenly gone, he felt a million pounds lighter. "My friend Nasir made it, so I know it'll be good, at least," he commented with a smile when the pastry was taken, offering her his left arm to take so he could direct her while they walked.

"Other than that awful humming sound about to drive me up a wall, I'm well, thank you. Here for research, as it were." Another smile tucked one corner of his mouth higher than the other. "You're ah -- alone, today?" His eyes flickered briefly around, not catching sight of the rose-crowned feline.

The pastry in one hand, Autumn took Lucas's arm with the other, smiling brightly as they walked along. It was... nice.

"As much as Rosalinde loves attention, she's been surly with me lately. Not too pleased I went three days without sleeping," Autumn admitted, sighing a bit to herself. It was super embarrassing in retrospect, but what happened... happened. No sense in beating around the bush. And s**t, last time she'd talked to Lucas, he'd made prosthetic jokes. He was all about keeping it real. Probably the besst person to keep it real WITH, honestly.

"That, and crowds kinda spook her. She's a magical cat, but a cat nonetheless. I'm really glad the humming stopped, too." Autumn looked around.

"...What was it, anyway?"

It hadn't been as bad as he'd anticipated. No, he'd envisioned those blood red nails sinking into his chest, exuding a poison that paralyzed him as she stole his heart and ate it as he fell. He'd imagined dying alone in an alley, all because he was stupid enough to follow something so obviously supernatural. He'd grown up here. He knew that things like this happened, they'd just never happened to him. He was shaking, but whether it was a result of fright or exhilaration, he wasn't sure.

The young man knew of Detective Mercer even though he didn't know him. He had always just kind of been there. Imposing. Not someone you wanted catching you when you were doing something wrong. Chester had always tried very hard not to do anything wrong and he had succeeded even now, at least in his opinion. Still, he had information about a missing girl, as odd as that information's source had been. Who better to tell than a cop?

"Mr. Mercer?" he said, frowning at his mistake. "Detective. I know something about Doe." It was only then that he realized Jeremiah didn't seem to be here in any official capacity. "Sorry to bother you. I could go file a report at the station, if you'd prefer."

Jeremiah was still with Algie, the tray of cookies in his hand and he had not quite yet made it to Aleksy - or that terrible end of the booths where trouble clearly laid. He was not expecting someone to come up to him, most gave him and Alg a wide berth (because of reputation, because of who he was, just because), and certainly not someone who matched him in height.

"Yes, can I he-" The words did not even leave his mouth before the young man was saying what he did. His face did not pale but his expression shifted, not something carefully neutral anymore but interested and a little hardened. The sunglasses were slid off of his face and into his pocket, blue-green eyes glancing to Algie and then back to the young man.

"It is not a bother. If you have any information about Doe then I can take your statement." Another flick of his eyes towards Algie and the man's pockets where he knew his notebook and pen was (Jeremiah had not brought his own). "Let's find someplace quiet and then you can tell me what you know."

Algie didn't say a word. His hand slipped into his pocket to pull out his small leather bound notebook and pen which he held out to his companion.

"Here give me the tray-" He would hold it while Jeremiah was occupied.

The author wouldn't stray far, just enough to still be present but not entirely invading into Jeremiah's police business. It wasn't that the other wouldn't tell him, it was just that he was absolutely nosey.

He knew what he had seen and remembered nearly every word the woman had said, but as the detective removed his sunglasses and things went from conversational to official, Chester suddenly felt very silly and more than a little guilty. He had no proof, and this whole encounter was something out of a story. His skin prickled, hair standing on end again, and this time he recognized the feeling as exhilaration. He wasn't sure he liked it.

Nodding as Mr. Mixlin took the tray and relinquished his notebook, Chester said, "Yes. Someplace quiet." He didn't think he could stand having anyone here witness him being berated for wasting an officer's time. At least, given their surroundings, he might be let off with a warning if he came across as under the influence of something.

Rosalinde wasn't the only one displeased; the ex-soldier cast a heavy look at Autumn, lips pressed in a tight line, cheeks dimpled with the effort. "She had a right to not be pleased! I'm not pleased, but I promise I wont be surly with you for days over it. But," he added, a little more delicately, "if you need help, you can always call, Princess. I don't know everything but I know how to brew tea and give a decent massage." One handed, but that went without saying. "I can't possibly imagine everything you're enduring but you don't have to do it alone." He squeezed her arm with his prosthetic hand gently, but let the topic go. He wasn't going to lecture, just let her know she had options.

"Crowds have never been my thing, especially ones that wear lime green pants." Dark brows quirked in the most judgmental manner possible, Lucas glancing at someone in passing. The shade was real. "But work said jump, and all I can ask is how high."

Her question, however, was not something he could answer. The man couldn't be certain, but it felt like he was missing something because of it. "I'm not sure." Lucas frowned for a moment, gaze a little distant and unfocused before resting on Autumn. "To be honest, I thought...I thought of you, that maybe it was something more up your alley. But I guess it was harmless, hm? Maybe some mic feedback."

Feedback that hums like a woman. Yeah, okay Lucas.

"Thank you, Alg," Jeremiah responded with that slight smile he had for the other when they were outside and in public. The tray was swapped for the notebook and pen and then the detective was looking around for a quiet spot.

There was a small alcove, back from some of the booths that he spotted, and he tilted his head towards that direction while looking at Chester. Algie was expected to be nearby because Jeremiah knew he was nosey.

He caught the slight change in Chester's demeanor and there was just the slightest softening of his expression, not much, but it was there. Once they were in the alcove, it was apparent that it was a break area for some of the booths. "Don't suppose you mind playing minder, Alg?" With him keeping people out while he talked to the young man.

His attention turned back to Chester and he gestured for him to take a seat. The detective would take one after he sat, clicking the pen and turning through the pages to find one to start to write. "Sit down and tell me what you know." A pause, as well as a slight wry grin. "... though you should start with giving me your full name."

He did as was suggested, scanning his chosen seat for gum or food or bird droppings before taking it. He managed to refrain from the extra precaution of brushing it off that he usually took.

"Chester Nicholas Poole," he said once he was settled. "I'm from Ashdown, but I've been away. I got back last month." Mostly irrelevant, but his brief ramble and the detective's mildly comforting change of expression served to calm him enough to continue on with the ridiculous part. "I should probably start with the humming. I'm pretty sure everyone heard it since some were singing along."

Jeremiah glanced as Algie moved, the other man clearly listening but also keeping an eye out for him, but his attention turned to Chester. The young man's name was written down carefully, the detective making a point to write slow and neat because this was Algie's notebook.

"It is always best to start at the beginning, Chester," he said encouragingly. Another note was made to actually look into who had started singing the song because that could lead to something.

"Yes, it stopped not that long ago." His eyes flicked up from his notes to focus solidly on Chester. "Did you try to find out where it was coming from?" Obviously it had not been from the person on the mic, as that had been a young man - not a woman like the humming seemed to be coming from.

Nothing, his search for the sounds turned up nothing at all, He found himself staring around, up, down, around, just people, so many familiar faces and not one of them looked like they had an answer. He sighed quietly and stilled himself, forcing himself to calm down and breathe.
Strange things invading the town itself, probably not a good sign.

The humming had stopped but, it didn’t really make him any more comfortable with it.
He had two options though, he could go back and try and get the flower crown that he wanted, that he still wanted, if they had any left.

BUT… he could also stop by the booth and see what the crew from the Fourth wall. If anyone knew that something odd was -planned-, well it seemed like Cid would know, maybe that Tom guy he hung out with who did the late Radio show.

Screw it.

There was enough weird in Ashdown that he could stop and get a bloody flower crown before he went back to searching.

He moved back to try and catch up wth Aleksy and hope there was a crown or two left.

Autumn snorted and rolled her eyes. She'd had a lot on her mind, okay? It was easy enough to get roped into stressing the hell out over daily life, without magic getting involved. Being told you were going to fail just pushed it into overdrive. Autumn gave him a very pointed look, and raised an eyebrow.

"I have a lot of tea and a lot of time, you'd best not be making promises for backrubs you can't keep," she jabbed, poking Lucas in the chest with a sardonic (and perfectly-manicured) finger. She was serious about taking him up on that s**t. She wasn't a fool, and she would damn well take a free backrub for all the stress she'd been through.

Autumn couldn't help but laugh a little bit at the odd feedback making Lucas think of her. Admittedly, with their initial meeting, it made sense.

"Thankfully, I'm out of the loop on this one. I'm just here to look cute and check out some merchandise."

"I did. It stopped because I found its source. A woman by herself in an alley, sitting at the edge of a fountain." He hadn't ever been down that particular side street before to know if it had possessed a fountain before her arrival, and he wouldn't volunteer to take them back there unless he was asked. "She was pale and had red hair, and she told me she had a message. I was hesitant to approach because she just seemed... off. The humming made my skin crawl. When I first realized I could tell where it was coming from, I knew I had to go and try to get whoever it was to stop."

The woman hadn't just seemed off, she was off. Even before she'd lurched forward and spoken into his mind, she'd called him human child like an alien come to earth to test human resiliency before an invasion.

"I didn't ask for her name. I don't think it would have been a help."
