Haunting
The groan hurts more than Abbi thinks it will because it means she's upset Chel in some way, either by aggravating her to wakefulness early or because she said too much or-- Or something! "Sorry, sorry." Abbi whispers back, waving a hand around. "I just wanted to, yanno, come check up on you! I should have waited, I'm so sorry."
But she doesn't leave. She lingers, and stubs her toe against the floor, and looks around at the machines. She sneaks fleeting glimpses of Chel and even in those small snippets of her hair and her mouth and her hands and the set of her shoulders something seems... Not all there. "Its... Like probs mad hard to talk... I can um, I can give you my phone? I got this cool thing set up where like... You type the first letter of the word you want and it, um, it kind of guesses what you might want to say and gives you choices?" Even with her best rationale, Abbi never fully understands Chel's hurdles when it comes to the written language and even as she says its feels the suggestion is poor. But she has nothing else, and she worries so dreadfully and misses Chel so much...

Haunting
Normally Chel would have entertained any number of Abbi's requests. Getting to watch the girl babble and fuss was one of her favorite pastimes actually, especially if it meant riling her up. It was a bit like winding up a toy and watching it go, or pushing a skateboard to move forward. Effort, but worth it.
Now she was guarded, quiet and tired. She waved a hand at the offer of a phone. Not only did the idea of reading make her want to vomit, but she also had no reason to talk to this nurse.
"Do ... your job," she said quietly, pointing to one of the machines. The faster she did whatever task there was, the faster she'd leave.

AdaptThis time more slipped through the cracks, where his face wrinkled, what his eyes showed, fleeting but poignant. He reached over and stroked some of her bangs from her face. Jack kept it simple. "Okay," he murmured. "Did you have a strange dream?" Yes, no.

Before she could answer his question, she jerked to slap his hand from touching her hair. Except she couldn't react fast enough, couldn't reach with so many delicate needles taped into her arm. She was stuck with a half-hearted motion, needing him to stop, but unable to communicate as much.
Fear ripped across her face, and an apology too.

He immediately pulled away and held his position awkwardly, reading her fearful look with a concerned frown. "Just checking them," he announced after a moment, hands up briefly in a peaceful motion before moving to make sure she hadn't yanked something out. Idle motions to buy her time to answer properly.

BouquetJason didn't want her to be in any more pain then necessary, and quickly finished up with the new set of bandages. Though she was still in considerable pain, regardless of what he did. He checked her records again. Was she on painkillers? He assumed she would be on them, but perhaps the dosage could be fixed so it would hurt less? But he knew not to mess around with that unless he made her even more ill then she was now. The moon hunter frowned, reading her sheet again and then shrugging to herself. Sure he read a ton of books but he was still learning things. chiickadee HI SORRY FOR THE LATE TAG I was at a wedding OTL

It took Chel a while to calm back down and her heart monitors showed it. She couldn't even hide her discomfort from him. Chel was nothing if not an open book, but even she hid things between the pages that were meant to stay secret. She didn't like being splayed on the table for anyone to manipulate, even unintentionally. It hurt that she couldn't even be treated like more than an injured animal. Everything hurt from her physical form to her bruised ego.
To his question she answered with a knocking yes followed by a pleading stay?
- with me? - with this condition? - with this uncertainty?

Even if she wanted to be bitter, he did the bandages well and it felt somewhat better afterwards. Good work wasn't without commendation.
"What?" she asked him, gesturing to the sheets. What was on there that required a frown?poke mattix congratulations mr and mrs poke!!

He refrained from the impulse to touch her again, let her cool down, and answered with a firm, Yes I stay. Even if he wanted to leave, could he at this point? After every trial and tribulation, personal and external? After committing himself to this vessel, after months before that of dragging and being dragged inexorably closer and closer? Jack couldn't remember if there was a conjugation for will always stay, but repeating the phrase was good enough to get his message across; it seemed better than reminding her, I love you.
"I'd be the shittiest boyfriend otherwise," he added at an attempt at levity, as if he didn't already almost feel like one.

Curiosity
It was late, and cold. Getting colder. Basically the basements sucked and he couldn't sleep, so Rhys found himself up and meandering through Deus. He'd been at it maybe for an hour or so before his wandering feet found their way to Chel's room again. He'd passed through and dropped in once or twice after that initial meeting but never for more than a few minutes at a time. The "why" was a mixed bag of not having much to say and not knowing her well enough to stay for no other reason than because, so as promised he was...around.
Another minute or so passed before he poked his head inside, curious if she'd be awake or not. Patients were typically asleep at this hour, and it was just some convenient for him that there was no night-shift Lifer there to tell him to buzz off. If one came around to tell him just that he'd probably move on, but until then Rhys figured he was in the clear.
"Yo," he whispered, "you up?"

BouquetOh, s**t he was busted, might as well fess up and ask. "O-oh" He blushed. "I-I was just trying to s-see if you were prescribed painkillers. S-since you're in a lot of pain, I m-might be able to inquire about g-getting you some, or c-changing the dosage."

WoundsThe girls hands fell to her side, expression fading from mild confusion and concern to something unsure and painful. "I don't mean someone else,"she insisted, voice a lot softer now. "You're Chelsea Craft. I met you the first time you had one of those bracelets on," she pointed to the one on her wrist. "You transferred to Death not long after we met n' helped you get acquainted with all the paperwork our Division is responsible for." What else, what else. Any little detail. Any little thing she could say that might jog the other memory. What happened to you?"You introduced me to Jack. Promised me you won't let me turn into a monster." There was a certain desperation settling into her tone. A mounting sense of dread she didn't know what to do with or how to barricade against.

Boyfriend. He hadn't said that up to this point and it hadn't occurred to her that that was what he was. All he knew was that he was Jack, that he loved her to a point that scared her, and that it felt safe with them. Enough to build a trust, but not enough to connect.
Boyfriend. So what did that mean? What did this aggressive shove of emotional attachment <******** mean?
"Not bad," she said, covering his hand to keep him from repeating the motion. Not a shitty boyfriend. She just wasn't sure she was a girlfriend.
She drew a question mark in the air, or more accurately she drew the squiggle that meant question or continue. She wouldn't give up at this.

"Miss me that much?" She was doing better now, able to do sentences. It had been quite some time since his last visit and Chel had been improving slowly.
"I'm taken ... apparently." It was a slow wheeze of air after that as she tried to catch her breath. Her phrases didn't sound so cool when they were pushed through a tiny airhole.
