Today I learned that... Username: Kamiki Topic: Geisha What's so interesting about that? Geisha have their history in Japan originating in the Edo era, and the tradition continues to this day. The more brightly colored, lavishly decorated Geisha are the maiko, or geisha in training. The house they belong to is called an okiya. Since the prestige of Geisha became world famous, especially after WWII, many prostitutes and courtesans started calling themselves "geisha girls," even though true Geisha do not participate in simple prostitution. Today I learned that... Username: Kamiki Topic: tea farming/production What's so interesting about that? Camellia sinensis, the plant used to make green tea, actually as a large plantation in the US, in South Carolina. The US has tried tea production since colonel Georgia in the 1770s. There was brief success in Hawaii from 1887 to 1892, but eventually lost out to the production of coffee instead. However, in recent years there has been a revival in interest in using Hawaii to grow tea due to the decline in Hawaii's sugar production. Today I learned that... Username: Kamiki Topic: koi What's so interesting about that? Koi fish are a common symbol in both Chinese culture and feng shui, often depicted in artwork, tattoos, furniture, and of course, live fish used in landscaping. The oldest known legend of koi is this: Chinese philosopher Confucius had a son in 533 B.C., and King Shoko of Ro presented to him a black carp (magoy). According to this legend, all modern day koi are descended from this magoy. Koi started being raised in rice paddies, primarily for food, in China until the art of koi keeping was taught to the Japanese, who then started to raise koi as pets in ponds in their gardens. It is lightly processed, so it has lower concentrations of caffeine than some other types of tea, like black tea. Green tea is the norm in many Asian cultures, including that of Japan. A powdered form of a certain type of green tea, matcha, is a popular flavoring for many snacks, including chocolate, and is the tea of choice for the Japanese tea ceremony. Green tea is high in anti-oxidants, and is found by many people to be a soothing beverage. Prize preferences: Orange koi otter, silver koi otter, gold koi otter, black and red koi otter, reroll

Nyx Queen of Darkness Today I learned that... Username: Nyx Queen of Darkness Topic: Koi What's so interesting about that? Koi isn't the actual name for these kinds of fish. They're called nishikigoi which translates to "brocaded carp". It's a fitting name since normally koi are used or ornamental/decorative purposes. The word Koi in Japanese sounds the same as the word used for "love" which koi have become symbolic of. Prize preferences: Orange with teapot, Gold with Teapot, Silver, Red, Seathi Today I learned that... Username: Topic: tea farming/production What's so interesting about that? In 1744, tea was first introduced into farming in North America in Savannah. In the southern states, there's a good-sized farm in South Carolina though most other states boast of only small growing plantations. Over the next few years, the plan is for most of the smaller places to increase their output by using some kind of mechanization Several other farms across the States are looking to become commercial.
