"Why would I complain about that?"
What he would complain about is the convenient fog that obscured his vision then. After stepping on some caltrops, he scowled and grabbed Chel's hands to hike himself up.

"'Cause-"
The room started to rumble and Chel's eyes widened. "s**t."
She grabbed his hand and ran forward, pulling one of the shards off the altar. "Grab one and let's go!"
Then she slammed her hands into her pocket and furiously scrambled to pull her pendant out, just barely making it back home at time.

It was hard to maneuver with her yanking him in one direction, but thankfully long limbs finally came into play. Grasping at the nearest shard, Jack then pulled at his pendant and hastily uttered the code to get him back to base before the room crushed him.
Both of them arrived right in front of the infirmary, though at least this time neither of them had to actually visit it. Exhaling, Jack uncurled his fingers and examined his shard and scoffed. "Of course the one I grab at random has a tree inside it." It was green with new life at first, but it began to turn the fiery colors of autumn before their eyes.

Chel hadn't even had time to look down at her hand. It was a mostly unassuming piece of glass, and Chel was almost worried that she'd picked up a completely useless shard. If she stared at it long enough it began to slightly hum though, so she had confidence that it was something magical.
It had, however, cut into her hand slightly and she let out a small curse under her breath. It was a shallow cut across the center of her palm from gripping the glass so tightly, but still enough to bleed. Both shards were handed over to the techs for examination and Chel moved towards the medical supplies to bandage her hand. "One day I'm gonna go somewhere and I'm not gonna get cut up or nothin'. Just you wait."
Shards were returned to their respective owners and Chel's hand was as good as it was going to get. "Pizza?" she asked, looking at Jack somewhat expectantly.

Jack, who had had similar thoughts about the wound, merely pat her back in solidarity and quiet amusement.
"Pizza," he agreed with a hint of longing. The break burrito had been a shitty breakfast, and it left even the normally bird-stomached a*****e hungry for more. "What kind? I'm thinking Supreme."

"I'm thinkin' the meat pizza in the fridge with some s**t thrown on it," Chel said tiredly. There was no way no hell that Jack was going to get her to go shopping after an entire mission. She already hated shopping.
---
And she did just that. A digiorno's meat pizza sat on the kitchen counter and she had peppers, olives and capers out so far with the intention of grabbing more. Too tired to shop but not too tired to cook.
"You wanna help?" she asked, brandishing a knife from one of the drawers.

"I dunno," he said with some cheek, "do you still not trust me?" Especially with kitchen tools.

"You're still caught on that?" Chel said rolling her eyes and handing him the knife. It wasn't THAT hard to chop up vegetables to throw on a pizza.
She stepped beside him and leaned on the counter to watch him with amorous eyes. "Yer not gonna rest 'til I say somethin' like ooh Hawthorn I trust you with mah whoole laaaife."

"It's a joke." Was he still not good at those?
It was his turn to roll his eyes as he started to cut up some vegetables: black olives, orange bell pepper, and red onions. "Thought of a movie yet?"

"So was mine," she said cheekily. She stepped behind him enough to put her cheek on his back; not enough to restrict but enough to hold.
"I dunno. We gonna actually watch it or not?"

He clicked his tongue as he continued to dice the vegetables. "Nasty," Jack accused. "This look like enough?"

Chel chuckled something low into his back, tiny vibrations on his spine. When he asked, she looked around his side and shrugged.
"Do as much as y'want. Great thing 'bout pizza is that y'can't have too much of a good thing."

As it turned out, she was right: despite dumping the vegetables on top in a thick layer, the pizza ended up pretty good. Combined with what soda they had in the fridge, he could have almost believed this was just a college dorm hang out sort of day.
But the repetitive spelunking adventures wore on him more than he thought. Jack found himself yawning not long after he had eaten his fill, and after excusing himself to take a shower (something nice and warm to shake off the mirror chills), he was honestly ready to just go to bed rather than get to any further shenanigans with Chel. And at a normal time to boot.
"I don't think I've even asked what these shards do yet," he realized rather belatedly as he slipped on a fresh band tee.
