A shrug.
"I don't know. People don't change unless they want to."

Claude gave a slight nod. "Correct." She trailed off for a moment, feeling that curiosity to start rapid firing questions gnawing at her, but kept it in check. Small steps and a different approach. "Were you hoping I had?" A pause. "Have you?"

There was a long pause in which Chance considered both of these questions and also one more: where was the damn portal.
"Maybe," he said evasively. "And...maybe."
It was not an answer either way.

Claude turned away from him, a small smirk tugging at her lips. What she heard was a yes and a yes, disguised under maybes the way Chance would say with this new found pouting streak he had. She scanned the area, looking for the portal as well, musing that they had found it to get here easily enough. "Please do tell." She murmured.

There was a long pause.
"No," said Chance delicately, and kept walking.

"Then I can't answer your question." She replied simply, and left it at that. After a moment she started to veer off towards the portal, having caught sight of it.

He was annoyed. And he was annoyed that he was annoyed in the first place, because Chance had never been one to get overly emotional over things, after all.
Claude's back was given a disgruntled look.
"You're all fun and sunshine," he muttered, traipsing after her.

Claude stopped, and spun on her heel to face the other. She crossed her arms. "And you're still acting like a petulant child." She dead panned.

There was no reply to this, at least not vocally. Chance gave Claude the dirtiest look he could muster and stalked past her to the portal.
"Thanks for your help," he said flatly. "And thanks for the totally unhelpful assessment of my character."
Then he slipped through the portal, annoyance flaring.

Claude sighed, and wondered how on earth any progress was to be made, because for as clever as she was, she was stumped. She immediately turned and followed him. "A totally true assessment. I don't know what you're expecting of me, and you are expecting something, yet you refuse to say."

He was still annoyed. Damn it.
Chance turned to her once they were through the portal, mercifully back on the island.
"I just want you to understand that you can't change me," he said flatly. "You keep saying you just want to help, but I have no need, nor desire, for your help. We got along just fine before you decided that it was your duty to become my therapist."

"Chance, this is the proverbial dog chasing his tail. You're stuck in this circle of a conversation, and I can repeat myself repeatedly, but you can't look beyond yourself to get it. For the last time, I don't want to change you, and I'm not making it my duty to be your therapist, because you're a ******** lousy patient for starters." Once outside the lighthouse, she stilled since she didn't care to carry this conversation back to the dorms where there'd be more people. "Why we're having this repeated go around is from a lack of communication. You say things, but want others, and I'm trying to figure it out, but you throw nothing short of a fit and I don't know what I make of it. It's like a large ball of knots. I'm trying to untangle the strings and you're knotting them worse. That's all." So many words out of her mouth. Sigh.

He stared at her for a long moment, stunned into silence by the sheer amount of words that had just escaped from Claudia Morgan's mouth. Chance didn't think he'd ever heard her say that much in all the time he'd known her.
"Wow," he said, after a moment, his tone musing, as though figuring out a particularly curious puzzle. "So you can say more than a sentence at a time."
A sigh escaped him.
"It's not a fit. I'm not a child. I'm trying to just go about my life the way I always have. But as long as you can just accept that, and don't try and change me, then I'll..." A hesitation, as he clearly was annoyed, though at himself or her, it wasn't clear. "...I'll try not to do this whole...tangled knot thing."
He waved a hand in her general direction.

Her flat stare was bordering on skeptical as she crossed her arms and stared at him. "I feel like you're patronizing me. It is a fit, and you're right, you're not a child, but you still act like one." Her lips twisted briefly. "A friendship, as with any relationship, is give and take, and you're not doing much giving back."

He gave a sigh of impatience.
"I'm not ******** patronizing you, I was trying to work with you," said Chance, sounding vaguely irritated that she hadn't picked up on it. "I was legitimately attempting to work out a way to get around this, and here you are telling me I'm childish again."
He all but through up his arms.
"What the hell do you want from me, then?"
