"In special circumstances only." He glanced through the progression of laughter with a little smile to himself. Unfortunate was not the word he'd use to describe them.

Afterwards, Jack took photos of her fingers in each chord and texted them to her before he forgot. "You're learning an oldie: 'Wild Thing' by The Troggs," he told her with a grin. "Thought it seemed appropriate for your first song."

"Igh," she said back at him. "So cheesy." Really Jack, really?

She quieted the strings with one hand and slipped the phone from his grasp with another in order to take another photo. A better one by her standards, since it had his face in it, her making a duckface and part of the guitar frets in the corner of the frame.

"There, now you got a selfie. Cursed forever." She grinned and went back to try to play one of the chords.

"Alright hotshot. What we doin'?" Chel was sporting a surprisingly tight ponytail and her workout clothes. It felt incredibly strange to be there without Chris; so bad that she'd almost called him to come help before recognizing that putting Jack and Chris in the same room was a bad idea.

It seemed like there was no better place to begin than at the gym. It had all the equipment and best of all they wouldn't look out of place. She wouldn't have to talk to anyone about why they were doing shoulder exercises- it would just look like everyone else.

Chel had a habit of chewing her waterbottle tops until they frayed, and the one she had now was no different. Even if she wasn't nervous, it was still an uncomfortable subject and she wasn't sure how to approach it. Had you told her to lift weights or running on an elliptical she would've run without a second thought, but now she had no clue where to begin.

The song was cheesy but the duckfaced selfie was perfectly fine? Jack feigned a scowl as he inspected it, unimpressed and yet still hitting the favorite button.

"Hey, this was the first song I learned," Jack defended himself as he put his phone away. "Not my fault it just happened to describe my future battle partner. How are you feeling about the chords so far?"

Jack sported similar with a pair of therabands over his shoulder; even his little ponytail wasn't as messy or lazily done. (He was learning.)

"Today's about learning what your limits are and working from there," he said, glancing at Chel as she chewed. This was going to eat at her confidence, but it was necessary to fix her bum shoulder and fast. His knowledge about rehab was scant, but some searching around had given him a few ideas.

Patting her back, he led them to their own open space in the gym and started stretching his arms on the way. "I was thinking we could start with push ups. If it's your rotator cuff, we'll have to be careful about not straining them too much, so you need to be honest with me when it starts to hurt."

"Like s**t," she said. She could play them in succession, but it was clear she was still stumbling. "Don't tell me there's more."

"Today's about achievin' our ********' dreams and bein' the best we can be," she squawked back at him, following his lead to their own area. Along the way Chel gave a friend a high five ("Yo you liftin' ten pounds more? Good fer you man") and waved at another person. The gym was familiar to Chel and she liked keeping it that way.

She raised an eyebrow at him and squatted onto the mat squished against the mirrored wall. "Bruh you know I do those with Chris on my back, right?"

"Three's enough for our first lesson. You got the chorus down at least. Want to see if I can sing along with it?" he asked. "We'll go slow."

He rolled his eyes along with his shoulders as Chel did her socializing stint. "No wonder you ******** up your shoulder," he noted dryly. "Show off. You and I are going to do push ups with a small change, and if that's still too easy, we'll talk about adding weight."

She looked at him, unsure for a moment. It was apparent that the gears were turning and she was making a decision. Ultimately her guitar-shyness won out and she put the instrument back in his hands. "Think it'd be better f'you just played for now. I'll catch on later."

It was a lack of confidence, but not an admission of defeat. "Plus I wanna hear you say the word groovy."

"Damn straight I'm a show off." She immediately flexed her arms to either of her sides. "Look at these guns. Why the ******** would I keep them hidden?"

She patted him on the back and continued the berating. "I mean I know you got every right to be hollerin' with yer little sticks, but no need to be jealous."

Eventually Chel got down to business and got on her hands and knees, a starting position for pushups. "What's the small change?"

He understood and took Barbara back into his lap. "Good first lesson," Jack complimented her, adding airily, "I take payment in the form of food, appeasements to my ego, and sex." Like he didn't already get those.

Foot twitching the beat, he played the song proper for Chel and sang the lyrics unironically. Groovy was coupled with a wiggle of his body and a grin. Music was one of the few instances where Jack could be openly playful and not have pride get in the way of it.

He opened his mouth to remind her that his little sticks had beaten her, but Jack was a good boyfriend today and passed over the remark. "Roll your back just a little," he told Chel as he joined her on the ground, assuming the position and showing her what he meant. "I've been trying it out just to make sure it worked first. It's a subtle motion, but you'll feel it between your shoulder blades after your third set for sure, whatever caliber your guns are."

She wondered why Jack was so insistent that it was the first lesson. < Perhaps he is attempting to coddle your oh so wounded feelings. > She chose to view it as his implication for more lessons.

"I'll talk to Finn about the sex," she joked before pulling her arms in to stay out of his way.

Jack singing was not just a physical feeling but a mental one as well. Chel had always listened to music for hours on end, drowning out whatever was going on outside her bedroom door, on the bus, anything around her. So it made sense that when Jack sang, she closed her eyes and allowed herself to be swayed.

When he finished she clapped softly, still as reverent as when he'd begun. Not without a hint of tease in her voice she said, "I really move ya Jackles?"

Chel imitated the motion with a raised eyebrow. It didn't seem like it would really do anything, just make the pushups slightly more of a pain in the a** to complete.

But she did as he said and began the unusual pushups. Partway through she said, "Yer welcome to hop on, bet I could hold you too," not without a bit of snark in her voice.
