Somehow he managed to make a hah that was both wry and a genuine sound of mirth. The truth was that in the end he did work alone. Or at least he had. Jack wanted to ask for more detail, but he assumed he was just going to get the Sucker Punch treatment again.
"Favorite food," he prompted instead, turning cheeky.

Somehow he understood what she meant about gifts.
"The one on the shell here? That's Aphrodite," he said. "If you're looking for mostly naked women, she's tops." He paused after the word then threw Chel a dirty look. Her fault for introducing it. "There was a shop over that had some evil eye wards." Get it? Eye? Charm against evil? Oh he was just a hoot. And speaking of—"Owl stuff too, naturally."

"Your d**k," she responded sarcastically, taking another one of his fries and chomping down on it.
Then after a moment or two, she said, "Chocolate chips pancakes. I used to make 'em with Chris late at night when out parents were asleep. We'd leave the kitchen dirty as ******** and it'd piss them off."

"I thought the whore on the shell was Venus," she said casually, leafing through a set of action figures for Jason. Something heroic or something funny? Funny- it was always worth it to see Jason's flustered face. Always.
She cracked a smile at the god's eye suggestion and gave it a thumbs up. "That's ********' hilarious. S'why I keep you around." But the owl comment had her confused. "Why owls?"

"Greek, Roman, whatever," he muttered, noticing that the vendor wasn't keen on her wording. "Watch your language when people are close if you to want to buy anything at all."
In his normal voice Jack went on, "They're one of Athena's animal symbols. That's where we associate wisdom with owls." He peeked outside the cramped souvenir shop and squinted ahead. "Think I see a place selling sandals. I'll see if they sell any with wing motifs for AK."

Luckily he wasn't stealing her drink at the time, otherwise he might have snorted it out. It was very easy to picture Chel at the head of some misadventure, though, and very, very easy to picture the mess.
"Is that really a thing?" Jack asked, sounding dubious. "Chocolate chip pancakes?"

Jack made a non committal sound; she very well knew she wasn't boring, practically the opposite. But he wasn't smiling, despite his assertion that the quiet was a welcome break. It was still just pretending in the end, a fact that ruined whatever peace Owain attempted to exude for him. Life for them wouldn't ever be little moments in a park; he supposed he was naive or stupid for trying to find it there, for even thinking one moment could equate to anything of worth when it was just an act.
"You're right, though. It's boring here." He felt sudden restlessness rising in his limbs as he withdrew his arm. "Let's keep moving."

"Is that a thing," Chel mimicked feigning (or perhaps not feigning) offense. "'Course it's a thing and they're the ********' best. Just don't day you like waffles or we're really gonna have to fight."
She sat back in her chair crossing her arms. "Don't make fun of it."

Chel watched his expression move from something open to withdrawn, and she couldn't help but feel a bit frantic and exposed as he removed his arm. Was it something she'd said? Was she too familiar?
The same malcontented anxiety that had reared it's head in Halloween resurfaced. She felt the clinginess Nevada must have felt and immediately shut her down to standing up and crossing her arms, walking a few paces forward. The problem for Chel wasn't that it was supposed to be pretending but that she was beginning to realize it wasn't.
"Moving where, speedy?" she questioned, walking towards the cats because they were easier to focus on. Being used to humans, one of them came up to her and began rubbing itself against her leg, to which Chel responded by bending over and scratching it on the head. "Who's a good kitty," she murmured, easily taken and distracted by an animal over her feelings.

"Yeah but why owls for Finn?" she posed, moving to the vendor to pay with her hunter card. "He got a soft spot for birds or somethin'?"
Seeing as some minor gifts were out of the way, she took the steps to catch up with Jack's huge ones and paced behind him, holding onto the back of his shirt so as to not get lost in the crowd.

He watched her interact with the cat for a few moments, feeling more and more like a man weighted down for reasons he didn't have words for, before reaching for his map. Smoothing it out in his lap, he scanned around for particular marks he'd made before. "East," Jack determined after a while, folding it back up and slipping it into his coat pocket. "I want to see if there are any pings in one of the schools."
He stood and joined her, attempting to reach for the cat. It slunk past his fingers after one touch and nervously moved on to more open spaces. Making a noise like the cat had just cracked a joke, he offered Chel his arm to take. "You won't actually have to go in," he promised with a half smile, knowing her particular allergy.

"Why would I make fun? It just sounds like a weird combination." He honestly thought it had been some short lived gimmick flavor. "For the record, I do prefer pancakes, though I'm more used to eating eggs and toast for breakfast." At least, when he ate at all.
He tapped a fry to his chin in thought. "Favorite food is...anything with noodles, honestly. The spicier the better. Rice is a close second."

He looked over his shoulder and was tickled, strangely, by the sight of her clutching his shirt. "What? No, I was just explaining what I saw," he replied. "Get him the evil eye thing if you haven't yet, that's probably best. Hell if I know for anyone else."
The shop in question was wall to wall full of sandals of all kinds. Jack made several faces at them as he perused. Standard "Greek style", high heel, colorful but of suspicious quality given their open location...He didn't trust any of them.
