He grit his teeth together in annoyance and frustration.

"You," said Chance, trying very hard to keep everything level, civil, normal. "You have got to stop expecting so much out of me so soon. You think I'm not trying, that I won't try unless someone pushes me, well that's not ******** true, just because I don't show it as much as someone else does doesn't mean that I'm not ******** trying."

He sucked in a sharp breath. "You can't ******** expect me to change so soon, it doesn't happen that way just because you want it to."

Chance's tone was struggling to maintain even, and even though she wasn't right next to him, she could still sense it. It was interesting, and it was probably awful she found it to be inspiring, if not a tiny bit amusing as well. Was it awful she could find some amusement in this? Watching someone get in touch with a part of themselves they felt didn't exist...

Through out all of this, Claude's attitude didn't flux. She was the same as ever. Impassive, placid, patient.

Another part of her briefly wondered if she should stay silent, and then wondered if that'd come across as immature. The silent treatment. Hm.

She was quiet for a while, and it almost appeared like she wasn't going to reply, when she finally did. "What I expected was very simple. A conversation."

"That's exactly my point," said Chance, this time in mild exasperation, the annoyance still prevalent in his voice. "It's not simple to me. You asked me a question. I didn't want to answer. You pushed me, told me all sorts of ******** things I'm supposed to be feeling, all because I wouldn't answer a single question, well I'm sorry if I don't want to answer something, I'm <******** sorry that you seem to think you're entitled to me answering just because you think you've gotten into my head."

He took a sharp breath, his eyes flashing, feeling as though this was not how things were supposed to have gone at all.

"You say you're my friend. If that means that you push and push until you get what you want, then that's ******** messed up."

Once again, she waited a few moments until the end before she spoke up.

She almost wanted to point out that for as much as he liked to exclaim that she was forcing her thoughts on him, he was doing the same in return. Not only that, but he was also conveniently forgetting the other things she had said as well. Pointing it out that this rate though, would only fuel the annoyance he was feeling at feeling forced.

"Yes, I'm your friend, and yes, I'm pushing to get what I want because what I want is to help you." Which was what she felt she had to keep pointing out. Claude paused once more before continuing, "It does seem backwards, hm? That friends would push friends, make them uncomfortable, clash with them...but it happens." With the best of intentions. Usually.

"Did it ever occur to you," said Chance, in a low voice, because he was tired of raising it, tired of this whole circle of messed up things. "that maybe I don't want the help? That maybe I'm trying to figure out if I can do things on my own before I lean on someone else?"

"It hadn't, because you haven't said so until now." Claude replied. "Also, do you, or do you not? Including maybe into nearly most of your points tonight leaves far too much room for my discretion."

"Because you just assumed I did," said Chance. "You never asked, you just went ahead and did whatever you wanted because you assumed it was what I wanted as well."

He made a noise of frustration, grinding his teeth together, but the fight had gone out of him. All that remained now was a lingering sense of mild resentment that he pushed aside in favor of simple wariness.

"We can," said Chance, "agree to disagree. I don't want help right now. If, in the future, I decide that I want assistance, I know where to turn, but for now I don't need nor want any."

She didn't agree with anything he said, and it wasn't a matter of feeling prideful. If she felt she was at fault, she'd correct it, but as far as she could see, Chance was of the opinion that he knew what he wanted and needed to do, when he didn't. The urge to point this out to him too was incredibly strong, but Claude held her tongue. At this point, trying to say otherwise now would fall on stubborn and deaf ears, and it wouldn't resolve anything right now.

As for needing and wanting help...

"Alright." She said simply, and that simple acknowledgement, while possibly a relief also possibly came too easily.

His eyes fell on her, flat and suspicious.

"That was a little too quick of an agreement, but I suppose it's good enough," said Chance. He exhaled a breath of annoyance, because he was under the distinct impression that this was not going to be the last time they had this conversation.

This was exactly why he did not like getting close to people.

"Let's go back," Chance said finally. "It's cold out here."

"Beating a dead horse." Was Claude's reply. At the exclamation, she tacked on:

"You can."

She was staying.

He ******** you, Claude," said Chance flatly, and, as childish as it was on the outside, he turned on his heel and stalked off, feeling, more or less, that the evening had been one of the worst he'd had so far upon coming to the island.

There was, of course, a multitude of comebacks she could have said to that. First and foremost was grow up, but of course, that wouldn't be fair. Instead, Claude uttered a "Mn." To show she heard him, but that it didn't deserve a response further than that.

Like Passenger sings She let him go, and spent the rest of her time wondering what she was doing exactly, if she was helping, and thinking that maybe, for a bit, she needed to just stick to herself for a while. She felt like she needed to collect her thoughts again, and figure out what the ******** she was doing exactly.
