Within the first hour of arriving at the nurse's office, Lex was already growing accustomed to the position. Their scraped knees and bruised hands were nothing compared to the injuries he'd seen in the infirmary. One teen had come in with a snotty nose and a high fever, and another puked all over Lex's boots. That was bothersome, but quickly cleaned up.

So far, nothing suspicious had happened. No frantic teenagers, no signs of any drug usage, not even a hungover youth. Lex questioned each student that came into his little office about any new medication they may be taking, or if they'd tried any sort of pills or narcotics. This obviously scared some of the students, and they'd clammed up and left after being given some Gatorade and a written excuse for being late to their class.

Lunch time hit, and Lex had brought nothing to eat, nor did he want to walk to get his lunch, risking some seniors seeing him and talking to him. The employee break room, if he remembered right, had a vending machine; and more importantly a coffee machine. The little sign with the clock that said "Will return at" was posted onto the the office door.

His coffee quest was interrupted rather quickly, a sociology teacher taking his arm and explaining that they needed to talk - right now. The teacher, Mrs. Somethingorother, was very strict and quietly spoke in a rush, anger permeating her speech and making her stutter more than a few times. Apparently, he should just get the hell out of dodge, because he was just going to make things worse by indulging in some macabre curiosity.

"No, ma;am. I'm... I'm a federal agent, looking into what's suspected to be a new drug on the market." Lex lied for the millionth time that week. At least it was a partial truth. The woman seemed to believe him, her face going wide and slack jawed. In the same rushed and hushed voice, she told Lex that she would keep an eye out for him.

She left promptly, and Lex finally got his coffee before having to get back to the tiny nurse's office, and yet again get puked on.

day 1—deal

He took a shower when it was open and swore that if he came back from this mission smelling like grease and fried food he would dump himself in the laundromat, scrape himself clean, and then dump a vat of hot grits on Lex.

In fresh clothes for what was left of the day, Jack considered staying off his feet and reading until dinner when he caught sight of Gale. "Have a moment?" he asked.

day 1 - deal

He was in the main room where everyone else currently stayed, rather than in the hotel room that he had gotten himself. Gale was sitting at the little table, scribbling notes about his first day's work and all of his less-than-satisfactory attempts at passing himself off as an American (the accent still needed work).

Someone had been in the shower when he'd come back, and Gale hadn't thought much of it - at least until the figure that appeared turned out to be the last person that he expected to see, tall and imposing with that same dark green hair that so often made Gale wrinkle his nose in distaste.

This time, however, he merely lifted his head, blinking slowly at Jack as he leaned back in his chair, Gale setting down the pen he was currently using to write with.

"Yes..." he said cautiously, wondering what this could possibly entail and remembering with vivid detail the way their last encounter had gone. "Did you need something?"

The urge to add something sarcastic was strong. Gale bit it back with a substantial amount of effort, keeping his expression deliberately neutral.

His accent desperately needed work, as Gale soon discovered.

"Are you, like, secretly from some sort of like, underground cult where they steal you from your home and make you stay in a bunker for ten years and that's why you sound all funny?"

Gale just blinked slowly, straightening his teeshirt (and feeling marginally uncomfortable at the very uncharacteristic outfit he was currently wearing). "No," he said slowly, attempting to remember the lessons Stormy had given him about taking it slow and not over thinking it. "I just, ah...haven't had much, you know...socializing. As a - kid, yeah, a kid."

Robert - who was a small (almost shorter than he was, but not quite, much to Gale's eternal disappointment and shorthood), wiry kid with aggressively red hair and vivid green eyes, a smattering of freckles across the bridge of his nose - just gave him a look that clearly indicated he wasn't buying it; but to Gale's relief, he let it go.

"Well," he said, much too loudly, and clapping a hand onto Gale's shoulder, nearly making his knees buckle. "If you need anything at all, just lemme know, okay? I totally know like, everything about this shithole, so I will definitely just like, show you the ropes and everything."

"Er," said Gale. "T-thanks." I think.

Quote:
1. You're cornered by an aggressively inquisitive student: they want to know who you are, why you're showing up out of the blue, where you're from. You can accept them as an ally of sorts, to use in investigating the school. If you don't, they will continue to appear the rest of the mission anyway.

It would be a lie if he said he didn't take some pleasure in the hesitant reception. "Two questions," he said. "One: would you mind if I stayed in your room for the rest of the mission? I can pay a percent back when we return to Deus." He disliked freeloading, even if it was on Gale's money. "Two, what happened to her?"

Jack's secondary question went unanswered for the sake of the initial question, which was received with a certain amount of flat surprise, followed immediately by suspicion. Gale's eyes narrowed slightly, a hand rising to absently twist the ring on his finger.

"Do you mean you want to share a room with me?" He asked, somewhat dubiously. "Or that you just want to buy my room from me at a lower percent upon return to the island, while I sleep in here?"

"However you prefer it." One person was still a large upgrade from seven people.

He considered this.

"All right," said Gale finally. "I'll give you half of the room; there are two beds, so you'd obviously get your own." Plus the thought of staying in the same bed was horrifying. "I don't need the money, though, so you'll have to think of something else to repay me with."

He didn't actually care about being repaid at all, but that was beside the point.

He prayed to gods he didn't believe in that he didn't have an episode in the night while this mission was going on; the last thing he needed was ******** Gale to witness any of that.

"Money is what I'm offering," Jack said curtly. "Either a portion of the cost or a discount on the next thing you runic." He didn't want to leave wiggle room for favors. "What happened, Gentry?"

One shoulder rose and fell. Arguing with Jack was the equivalent of trying to talk to a brick wall when it was in a bad mood, so he let it drop.

"Discount on next runic thing, then," said Gale, sliding a hand over his notebook and closing it slowly. He expected the next question, but still didn't want to answer it as much as he hadn't the first time it had been asked.

"Why do you care?" he asked instead, and it wasn't accusatory, merely wary.

A question he still asked himself. "Because you still haven't answered," he retorted, turning to start piling his things back into his suitcase to move. Because a pause wasn't always due to who he was, but rather who she was.

Gale exhaled a breath that was half a sigh, half just an attempt at prolonging the inevitable. He knew Jack wouldn't rest until he had at least some sort of explanation, and in spite of Gale not wanting to give one, the stress-inducing part was that he wasn't sure he even had one in the first place.

"She wasn't feeling well," said Gale finally, which was more or less true, bordering on the less.

"She looked fine before." Jack affected as best a flippant attitude as he could about it, checking his phone several times as he moved about finding his things. "Unless she caught some strange form of Fear STD from you in the hour and a half we had before leaving?"

He couldn't help the roll of his eyes, even with his resolve to remain civil - or at least, cut back on the sarcasm (it was very hard).

"No STDs, thank you," said Gale softly, and then sighed again. "She's - it was just a bit of anxiety, it's off and on, she wasn't feeling like she was able to put her full attention into the mission, so she went back, rather than possibly slow it down."

It was mostly guesswork. His face registered no doubts, however, Gale as stoic as ever.
