The walk through Petalburg Woods to Rustboro City was surprisingly short. Or maybe it was long? It was hard to properly judge the concept of time in a forest situation; the light from the sun seemed to ebb and flow depending on where one moved; one moment the place was flooded with the brilliance of light and the next it was cast into the kind of shadows that scared small children.
Either way though, Faraday and his Pokémon soon found themselves freed of the strange foliage prison and out in the finely cleared and paved city that was Rustboro. It was an odd to hear the heels of his boots clinking lightly against the cobblestone pavement as opposed to the silent shifts of dirt. It was also a welcome change. Sure, the group had only been in that forest for a couple of hours, but the brilliance of an unimpeded sun made it seem like they’d been lost for a lifetime. In fact the light was so blinding the detective found himself using a hand to block some of it as his eyes skimmed for some signs of a Pokemon center.
"Cal, find the center for me, will you?" He remarked in a sort of non-chalant tone. The ghost pokemon turned ever so slightly to glance in his direction. Head dipping once to indicate a nod before the pokemon quickly flew off and through a nearby building. In a normal situation, a trainer would’ve been concerned by the clear lack of respect for other’s privacy in the action; hap hazardously flying through the walls of other people’s home’s was well… rude.
But in this case, there was no such concern. The Mismagius would conceal himself as he moved; he wasn’t floating through to violate the sanctity of the owner’s home but simply as a means of quicker travel. Sometimes you had to give a little to get a little; they gave a little in the aspect of politeness for the sake of covering more ground. Really, it was fair in all cases. Faraday was a man on a mission at the moment as it was; to get his badge and get along to real business.

As he watched the ghost disappear through the wall of one of the stone buildings, a paw tapping on his cheek diverted his attention. Dresden had made his way back to his shoulder as they had walked, leaning over now a bit more so that he could attract his trainer’s attention. Green eyes shifted to the side first followed by his head rotating around to follow, an eyebrow quirking curiously at the Buneary.
"Bun… buneary." Was the hushed response he received, eyes following the paw that gestured down to the front of his shirt. Much like Dresden, Murphy had also returned to her favorite resting area as they had moved between forest and town, tucking herself snuggly in the front of her trainer’s shirt. It was rather cute in retrospect, though Faraday had had a brief realization that her favorite spot happened to lie between his shirt and ballistics’ vest. Not that he was expecting to be shot at any time soon, Arceus no, but it was still a bit of a nagging concern in the back of his mind. Obviously, Murphy would have to deal with simply residing on the floor in more harrowing times.
At the moment though, her eyes were shut, little body rising and falling with the deep breaths of something asleep. Ah, so Dresden was indicating for him to be quiet. Faraday’s lips parted slightl in a silent ‘oh’ of recognition, eyes looking back to the white rabbit as his head gave the slightest of nods. The hand that had previously been shielding his eyes from the sun lowered to make a zipping motion across his mouth, further indicating that he would quiet down. The poor mud fish was probably tired from the training they’d done; she was still a young thing after all, from what Faraday understood a lot of the lab pokemon were recent hatch-lings or a few weeks or so beyond that with minimal fighting experience. It only made sense. His hands fell back to his hips as the Mismagius reappeared before them, head jilting backwards.
"This way." His voice announced in Faraday’s mind and with a grin, the detective nodded and moved in the indicated direction. As they walked, he noted the passing of a Pokemart. He actually wanted to pop in and take a look before they challenged the gym leader. Every little bump be could find to improve his team in the long run was worth it; be it against gym leaders, bad guys or just in general. But first, the pokemon center.

It didn’t take long for them to get there. In fact, the center was right behind the market, so Faraday wouldn’t have to go far to do his browsing. Which was really a win-win situation in his mind. He stepped inside and walked to the counter, greeting the Nurse Joy with the most gracious of smiles. He fished their pokeballs off of his belt and handed them over, ushering the pokemon forward and onto the counter. He gently removed the now stirring Murphy from his shirt to offer her over as well for some healing.
He wasn’t a fan of leaving his pokemon in their pokeballs as the fact of him placing three of them actively on the counter showed. Calcifer had disappeared from sight again, most likely to go find the gym for Faraday. That was fine, the detective was fairly certain the ghost was in tip-top shape. And if not? Well he had found his way to getting healed on his own without Faraday around; he’d probably do it again if needed. Stepping away from the counter as the nurse took his pokemon, Faraday opted to take a seat and check his messages. It hadn’t been that long since he’d started after all, but there was always the chance of a text or two in the course of that time. It just so happened that in fact there was. One from some unknown number asking him if he was interested in changing his data plan –no seriously, those were some of the worst texts ever- which he swiftly deleted with a slightly agitated frown and another from his … sister. Well now that was a pleasant surprise. A slight smile started to creep across his face as he read over the message, giving a thoughtful look before he responded. He could always count on her to be sending him some kind of comment couldn’t he?
With message sent he stood up. He could visit the market real quick while he waited for his pokemon to heal and told the nurse as much before exiting back out the doors. He wouldn’t take too long; just a quick browse and if there was anything worthwhile, he would purchase it on whatever modest income he had. Stuff couldn’t be that expensive for a newbie trainer, right?

Or… not. The markets apparently knew very well how to play on the limited pockets on of new trainers and even if he wasn’t the newbie he was pretending to be, even Faraday couldn’t muster the stomach to pay the prices offered. Luckily for him though, most the things they had to offer didn’t truly peak his interests in the first place. Sure there were pokeballs of different flavors and potions of every strength but at this point in time he would live with the limited supply he currently had.
There was a nice little Muscle band on sale though that he decided to purchase. That would do well for Dresden; he was a sort of punchy rabbit after all, something like this would benefit him in the long run. It was a bit… ‘big’ though for the little guy; he might have to wear the thing as a neckerchief for a bit until he either evolved or grew a bit. Ah well, it would still be a nice gift. He also grabbed a few rare candies that happened to be on sale; even if they were a little past their Halloween sell date, they would still be good to power up his team a bit. Which really, was needed.
He dropped the band and the candies on the counter and made the purchase, thanking the ever grinning salesperson as he left. Stepping back out he returned to the pokemon center, just in time for Nurse Joy to catch his attention and inform him his pokemon was done. Great timing! He returned the pokeballs to his belt, lifting Murphy and setting her on the ground for now, Dresden jumping down beside her as well. Sissil stayed on the counter, cat-like eyes scanning for something. Was he looking for Calcifer? Well good luck with that; he was still nowhere to be seen. When that fact became clear, he started to hover himself giving a skeptical look at his trainer. Faraday gave him a smile and a gentle pet on the side of his face. He’d have to question Calcifer on what he’d done exactly.
"Alright you lot. Outside we go." He gestured, ushering everyone along in front and out the door. There was just one more little thing he wanted to do…

And that was test his team against a trainer. What better judgement of their preparedness than through such a battle? After all, that was part of the whole ‘trainer’ lifestyle, testing your metal against randomly encountered strangers who could easily become your enemies the moment you beat them. Not that Faraday had ever actually heard of such things happening, but there was always that awkward possibility wasn’t there?
As he browsed for a potential challenger, he used the last heart scale in his bag on Murphy. There was certainly nothing wrong with assuring his own pokemon had a bit of an edge as well and after a bit of reviewing, he’d figured she’d benefit the most from it. With that done and a new move in place, he moved away from the center to search. It wasn’t really long though before he found other trainers; he was right near the pokemon center after all and well… this was the city with the first gym leader of Hoenn. Those two things just sort of went hand in hand in supporting his find. Of course, so did other things. Faraday and his little team stumbled their way onto a young trainer, grinning and chatting away with another youngster. With one pant leg up and the other down, he exuded the kind of smug confidence one might have expected of a potentially new trainer. Which was good because the detective might’ve felt bad.
"Hey there, excuse me?" Faraday interrupted, leaning forward a bit to try and drop his eye level to match the young man’s. The boy turned, giving him a questioning look as he swiped a hand across his face. ”Yeah? What do you need mister?” He inquired, head tilting back. Despite the appearance, his tone was polite enough. Faraday gave a smile, sweeping a hand behind him.
"You’re a trainer right? Would you like to battle?" The kid quirked an eyebrow, glancing back at Faraday’s pokemon. He seemed to be studying them, gaze remaining the longest on Dresden and his odd appearance. Faraday waited quietly, watching the kid with a curious gaze. A bit of a cocky grin suddenly sprung onto his face, glancing at his friend before returning his gaze to Faraday.
”Ya, sure mister, I’ll battle ya.” Faraday smiled, hands clapping together as he took a step back. "Great! Thanks, I appreciate it." He remarked. Great, this would go well.

The youngster’s Umbreon quickly came out and… quickly went down. That tail wrapped in water attack had quite the punch. The kid seemed equally shocked, returning his pokemon with a bit of a bristled huff. He gave Faraday a questioning look, glancing back at the chirping Mudkip wiggling away in front of him. The detective just kept a pleasant smile, waiting for his opponent’s next pokemon. At the sight of the Ducklett though he had to frown, considering for a moment before ushering Murphy back and sending Sissil in to battle.
