Songstress Kitsune

It seemed as if it had been ages since Quinn had been out and social with anyone besides her Court or Clarisse. In actuality, it felt incredibly strange to even be Quinn, rather than Leto. But between the near-constant patrolling and the hyper-realistic nightmares, the fancy New Years Eve party was a welcome distraction.

Seeing Clarisse in a gown, and her flashing Quinn that smile... It made Quinn melt and it made the dress that she was wearing completely worth-while. She grinned back at Clary and gave her hand a squeeze before taking the black mask from her. She glanced over it before shrugging and putting it on.

"Surprise surprise, the baddies are up to no good." She chuckled and rolled her eyes from behind the mask. "Thanks for the mask, darlin'. Always got my back!" She said with a wink.

She looked up startled from fussing with her clutch at the sound of an unfamiliar voice, and a woman with stunning red hair approaching her. "O-oh! Thank you!" She was at once flattered and embarrassed, and flashed a sincere smile that bordered on breaking into a grin.

"Yours is lovely too, and those bracelets!" It really was an excellent time to just... wallow in pretty things and pretty colors. Did you wallow in that sort of thing? Bask? Bask sounded better, even if she was pretty sure the night was just waiting to turn into a pit of pain and disaster and was sure she'd capture it on film. I do wish they'd let us pick the masks though." She tapped her green mask in reference, examining the curious orange thing the other woman had.

It was colorful, but... risky. Especially with her own hair color. It could come off like a sunset or like an eye searing disaster. Hmmmm. Decisions decisions.

"Oh those supplements." He had a pretty good guess at what she was talking about, but his own experience with them hadn't been quite so dramatic. He wasn't sure if he was lucky or not.

"I um..." That was a tough one. As far as he knew, Noah was unlikely to attend, under the circumstances... Ellie he figured would only come if someone put her in a straight jacket and dragged her there behind a team of wild horses, unless she pulled out her weird princess personality and put that on like it's own kind of Masquerade costume...

"...Dani maybe... She wasn't super interested but I think her mother was trying to talk her into it. I... don't think I know anyone else off hand. Well... no that's not true I met one other... but..." Having met him roughly twice he wasn't sure Quenton counted as a 'daytime friend', let alone an anything friend. And he didn't think Luxor liked him period, or if people who ran carnivals had the time to attend charity balls.

He trailed along side her dutifully, glancing around at the sea of masks like they might give him a hint of something familiar.

Nothing pleased Emory more than the way this girl squeezed his arm. Actually, there was one thing that pleased him more, and that was her calling him by his preferred nickname "Spike." He'd been trying to get everyone from his teammates to his professors to his little sister to call him by that name, with little to no success. That already elevated her to preferred person status in his mind.

He laughed at her little joke, then nodded his head in a bow. "Pleased to make your acquaintance, Natalie. I'll just call you Lee, how's that? I think it fits you better." And it did, much more bold a nickname than the other option she presented to him. A bold nickname for a bold girl.

"Am I good on my feet," he snorted, more a statement than repeating her question. Gently he removed her hand from his arm, not letting go. Taking a step back, he launched into a series of dance steps that would have put Michael Jackson to shame, his basketball sneakers squeaking on the floor. When he was done with his demonstration, he smoothed the front of his suit jacket and tucked her hand back in the crook of his arm. "Good enough?"

The expression on Lovely's face was far from lovely. First Ilian ignored his purposeful dig—was it so wrong that he enjoyed a little bickering now and then?--only to be followed soon after by the arrival of Jericho.

Who was not Lovely's friend. Not really. After all, Lovely didn't have any friends, and he was fine with keeping it that way considering this hellhole of a city presented him with very few options. More than likely Ilian and Jericho would commence to act plebeian, and Lovely had no choice but to tolerate it.

Or he could leave. That was a tempting idea, but he still had hope that this party might not turn out as terrible as it appeared at first glance.

And second glance.

And third.

“Speak of the devil,” Lovely said, eyeing Jericho with a look of superiority. “Of course I did good with him. Do you think I'd agree to be seen with him in public if he didn't dress appropriately for the occasion? Please, I've no desire to embarrass myself like that. This party is bad enough as it is.”

Attending the New Year's Eve ball had not, in fact, been on Alex's to-do list this year. He really had no interest in going to a party when he didn't want to pick someone up or get drunk, because Luka was at home and he very much preferred spending time with his boyfriend to doing basically anything else. But he had been informed by a lovely lady General, with a very wicked scimitar which she had been so considerate as to press to his throat hard enough to draw blood, that the ball was an operation, and that he would be expected to attend if he did not want to arouse further suspicions of disloyalty. (Implying there were already suspicions, which was just great but perhaps not all that surprising. His activity had dropped off, he was no longer draining energy except every once in a while, and he was

Unsurprisingly, no one had actually told him s**t about what they were doing, just that he was to show up or else. It was his favorite sort of situation: the sort where he was expected to be somewhere where he was likely to get into a hell of a lot of trouble and had no warning about what that trouble was going to be.

God, he hated the Negaverse so much. This entire thing was ridiculous and he absolutely despised that he was being cornered into attending at all. But cornered he was, and so he had thrown on a suit and told Luka it was a function with his biological mother and that he would be back as soon as he could get out so they could celebrate New Year's together.

(He may have implied the celebration would require a lot of privacy, but they would, hopefully, be just fine on that front.)

When he went to go inside, he was handed a jet-black domino mask, and that just further confirmed that this had to be some sort of setup, because everyone else wasn't getting masks until heck-in and the person behind the booth gave him an extra nice smile when she saw what he was holding.

He was tempted to bolt right then, but instead he beelined for the main ballroom, because he supposed he could float around there for a while. A fake ID got him a glass of champagne and the blue-haired teenager tucked himself into a corner, sipping and watching and hoping that nobody actually decided to bother him. His plan was to spend maybe ten or fifteen minutes hanging out and then, as soon as he could feasibly do so, bolt out the back door.

Oh well, at least the champagne didn't suck. That was one point in this stupid party's favor.

Evren look shocked for a moment that someone had asked her to dance. But then she smiled brightly and clasped her hands together. "I would love to dance... that is if you don't mind me being your partner Sir."

She continued smiling as she decided to explain herself. "You see I don't know how to dance... as far as I know anyway." She tilted her head slightly as she started thinking to herself that she actually has no idea how she got here or what is going on.... but she guesses she'll keep it to herself for right now.

"If you'd like someone more... adept at dancing I would understand." She was still smiling brightly... seriously that face seemed to be practically stuck that way.

Marissa was not drunk enough for this place.

She felt that way about a lot of things, but parties cemented the thought more firmly in her brain. There wasn't anyone in particular she cared to approach in an effort to make small talk, no matter how many times Claire attempted to drag her over to chit chat with some of the women from her book club. There wasn't even much she had any interest in doing either. Except drinking.

Dancing wasn't really her thing, so she avoided the dance floor. Falling into random conversations with random people whose names she wasn't going to remember by the time the night was over didn't appeal to her either. Music did, but the main ballroom didn't seem to be playing her type, and going upstairs to the third floor ballroom where the music was louder and probably more to her liking would only lead her into a crowd of teens and twenty-somethings, which would only serve to remind her that she was long passed that stage in her life.

Marissa appeared bored and morose, hovering around the edges of the main ballroom and smiling blandly whenever anyone happened to look her way, but the action was strained and obviously forced. No one seemed to want to bother her, and that was a-okay with her.

She swiped another glass of champagne off of a passing tray and drank, slipping her phone out of her clutch to scroll through emails and make herself look busy.

He hadn't been noticed yet. Jonah chose to take that as a sign of success. His grandfather didn't even seem to realize he'd gone, so busy was he with conversing with the other old folk. That was fine by Jonah. The less he had to be around his grandfather, the less he had to hear about business, the less stress he'd find himself under.

People watching proved entertaining enough. He liked people. People were generally alright, even when they weren't. Of course, he had no idea how to approach people. It might be nice to dance, but he wasn't confident enough to ask anyone, and anyway doing so would only draw attention to himself. No doubt his grandfather would find something to critique.

Even if Jonah'd been a little more comfortable with his surroundings, he doubted he'd have any fun.

He should have brought a book. Or something. Anything to distract himself and keep his mind off of all these people. It wasn't that he didn't want to be around them; they were entertaining in their own right. It was that he knew so few of them. It was a room of unfamiliar faces, made even more so by the masks they'd all been encouraged to wear.

Jonah fiddled with his mask before finally slipping it onto his face. There was a certain comfort in it, he thought. He might not know who everyone else was, but they didn't know who he was either. It would make it easier for him to hide.

At least the corner he was tucked away in was welcoming.

It turned out the buffet table was the perfect place to hide. Not only was she out of sight, and therefore at little risk of being discovered by the pesky hotel staff, but all these foul humans kept dropping food right in front of her.

If she weren't so tired of eating park squirrels, she would have been offended by the mess. As it was, she made quick work of swiping whatever she could get her paws on.

Lucasta sniffed at a carrot. It was a revolting thing. But it had been dipped in some sort of white sauce which tasted appealing enough. Lucasta licked it clean and moved onto a piece of shrimp, which was delectable. She purred happily as she ate it, her bushy tail flicking back and forth in delight.

Soon enough she had a substantial pile of appetizer and dinner items—random vegetables she refused to eat, meatballs that were just a little too spicey for her tastes, little sausages in barbeque sauce, shrimp, and a few pieces of cake from which she licked all the frosting.

Of course, her food hoarding meant she wasn't making as careful of an observation of the crowd as she'd intended, but it was worth it. It had been... well, she didn't know how long it'd been since she'd had good food—she couldn't exactly remember—but it felt like it'd been a while. She salivated over another fallen shrimp.

The only thing that could possibly make this night better would be a bowl of decadent cream.

Ilian did not know Jericho had approached them until there was suddenly a hand ruffling his hair. “Hey!” he flinched away, although he hardly seemed annoyed when he realized who it was. “Not long,” he replied, looking relieved at the sight of his friend.

“Don’t talk to him like that,” Ilian frowned at Lovely, either ignoring or just unaware of the fact they were both talking about him being dressed up and made presentable. Lovely he’d only known for less than a year, but Jericho was more or less a brother to him. And seeing as he was lacking brothers, he felt a little overprotective.

“So… what do we do now…?” he wondered, glancing around to see if he could spot some food. He wasn’t one to ask for anything too fancy, but if they were going to offer it… might as well not let it go to waste. Peanut butter and jelly every day got old.

Chris nodded to Paris, trying to push any suspicious thought from his mind. Anything convenient that happened in the city put him on edge, but he knew he was being overly cautious most of the time. And the way Paris glanced around the room, he suspected she was suspicious as well.

He leaned close to place a quick kiss on her cheek as she put her arms around his neck, placing his hands along her waist. “Don’t leave my side,” he requested as he pulled back, his momentarily wary frown changing back to a small smile.

With everything they’ve already been through, he really hoped he was just being paranoid, but they could never be too cautious. For now, though… things seemed well enough. “How’s your wrist?” he asked as he reached up to gently remove her arms from around his neck so they could head towards the stairs, keeping an eye out for anyone they knew as he did so.

Peter frowned at her response to him, taken aback by her attitude. “I could, had I even known it was your birthday,” he pointed out, his eyebrows furrowing slightly and his lip twitching in what was half a grimace. “And yeah I did, what’s it to you?”

Haven made him uncomfortable. As confident as he felt in the classroom, he was never sure how to respond to her when it came to her mean comments. He almost wished he hadn’t run into her, if only because she was making him look like even more of a fool than he felt.

He wished he was Oberon. At least then he felt as though he had more confidence than being a scrawny, nerdy kid who happened to enjoy school, just not the people there.

“Look…” he started, letting out a forced breath, not quite a sigh, but more as a sign of resignation. “I do hope you have a good birthday. I know having birthdays close to holidays sucks, so… I hope you do have a good time tonight. I’ll get out of your way since I’ve clearly offended you somehow,” he submitted, holding up his hands as he took a step back. “I was on my way to look for the food, anyway… You’re welcome to join, but don’t feel obligated, or that you have to be mean to me tonight.”

“So handsy,” Paris teased.

In reality she sometimes thought Chris wasn't handsy enough. Paris didn't really care for overdone public displays of affection either, but Chris tended to take it even further than that. She counted herself fortunate she'd gotten a kiss on the cheek.

Alright, so maybe that was exaggerating it just a little bit. Whatever. She could pine for more if she wanted to.

That Chris seemed so wary and on edge didn't help to settle her nerves at all, but Paris did her best to ignore the feeling. Everything would be fine, she told herself. This was as normal an event as you could possibly find in the city. Sure, the masks were convenient, and the free alcohol didn't exactly match up with the price of admission, but that was it. There was nothing else about it that struck her as odd. The more she glanced around, the less she could find that seemed worrisome.

“I hate to break it to you, Pooh Bear, but you can't exactly follow me to the bathroom, so you and I are gonna have to separate at some point, sorry to say,” she told him. Her voice remained light and teasing. “I don't know about you, but I plan on getting a few drinks.”

Paris held the skirt of her long dress up as they made their way up the stairs to the third floor. She glanced down at the hard white brace on her left arm when Chris brought his attention to it.

“My wrist is fine. I guess,” she said. She wiggled the fingers of her left hand like she could test its capabilities. “I think it's mostly healed. Going you-know-where seems to be helping a lot. Ooo, now that's more like it,” she changed the subject as soon as they came upon ballroom three, with its loud music and club-like feel.

“You want a drink first? Might help you loosen up a little.”

“I'm not being mean,” Haven insisted.

Maybe she was. A little. But it wasn't on purpose. Not really. Peter just... he was such a know-it-all, and it bothered her because she knew she was the exact same way. They were competitive when it came to their grades, and Haven supposed she didn't really know how to tone the competitiveness down when it came to normal interactions outside of school. This was how she was used to communicating with Peter. It had become a habit.

Really, he wasn't a bad kid. A little obnoxious, but most boys his age were the same way. She just... didn't know how to talk to boys. Which was stupid because it wasn't like it was all that different from talking to girls. But she felt awkward, and she reacted to that awkwardness by teasing.

She felt a little bad that she'd made Peter feel... whatever he was feeling. But she also didn't know how to apologize for it, so she let it go without further comment.

“Wait, I don't know anyone here,” she said, and felt just as awkward doing it, moving away from the kid's ballroom to follow after Peter. “I saw food in the main ballroom. There's stuff in the kid's ballroom, too, but it's all little kiddie stuff. Ice-cream and cookies and things like that. Not really anything good.”

"Let's get t'that ballroom then," Jeanne said, irrationally pleased at Luca's reaction. Yes, this was going to be a very, very enjoyable evening. Getting to shimmer and sparkle and glitter was just icing on the cake. She turned her head to catch her girl's lips in a proper kiss, none of this cheek nonsense, and then linked arms with her and started sashaying her way in the direction of the main ballroom.

Sami-Fire

Avacyn let Arilee steer her over, the fabric of her dress rustling around her. She tried to focus on little things like that, or the room, or anything but all these people and how badly it could go if things went south, like they always seemed to. She curled into Arilee and let her eyes trace over the place.

"Maybe we can dance in a little bit? I'd like that," she acknowledged. "I should've brought a camera, this place is so lovely. It might even make a nice wedding venue." It was exciting to think about it in those terms. "And...yeah, if anything gets weird I...I'd like to leave." She swallowed and pressed herself a little closer to Arilee.

God, she hoped nothing happened.

Twilight Jaws

Clarisse laughed. "Of course I'm looking out for you! What kind of girlfriend would I be if I didn't?" She said, and it was easy to be light and cheery when she was pretty sure nothing too terrible was going to happen, and when she could look at Quinn and how incredibly beautiful she was in her elegant evening gown and realize that yes, she was the luckiest woman alive right now. It wasn't some silly trope or exaggeration or anything, she just. Was.

"Do you want to see what they have for snacks, or dance, or...what should we do first?" They had the whole night, right? Surely whatever the Negaverse was planning wouldn't be too much of a spectacle, not in public like this!
