Chel's face scrunched up in annoyance. "Don't throw yer fancy s**t at me. Is it yes or no!"

Jack huffed a sigh. "What gave it away, the part where I ******** hugged the wall on the way to that army or the part where my eyes were glued to the floor?"

Chel cracked a smile at her victory and she said, "Mostly the wall hugging." Her hands squeezed a little more tightly around the small of his back, almost comfortingly so. "I wasn't gonna bug you about it. Just exciting that Jackles has more weaknesses than I thought."

Her pleased smile was enough for her satisfaction, but she untangled herself from him lest it make him uncomfortable and irritable (like it always did). She left the decision of walk or not to him. "Is um- Is Chinese laundry a good shoe brand?"

"Exciting, she says," he echoed with another more long-suffering sigh, like every little reveal was ruining some master plan of his.

He gave her a look. "Alright, I want you to repeat the words Chinese Laundry and ask yourself how the ******** that sounds like a good company name for anything, let alone shoes." A shake of his head. "Short story: don't waste your money on them. If the shoes are cheap, they're not worth the investment. Someone like you needs something ******** durable like, hell I don't know, L.L. Bean makes some good stuff."

And Chel gave Jack the most heartbroken look. "Really?" It wasn't like he had left any wiggle room for another meaning.

Then she blinked a few times. "N-No. Not for me, I ain't had a different pair of shoes for like ... 3 years now." In fact the very idea that Jack thought she had bought herself shoes was kind of precious. "It was your present. I bought really rad heels- they look like they can kill a dude." That apparently was Chel's criteria for whether or not you should buy shoes. More glumly, "You have to teach me this stuff so I can get you better s**t."

If there was a metaphorical golden "you tried" sticker, Chel had certainly earned it.

He blinked. "My present for...? Oh God," Jack snickered, "you were not going to get me shitty shoes for Christmas, were you? Chel." For some reason it was funny enough to make him chuckle some more. "Stick to mugs, that's what everyone ******** gets me if it's not shoes." He was starting to see it as the generic Christmas clothes option, taken when someone didn't know what to get him. Coffee, shoes, and assholery: the trifecta of public knowledge.

Shaking his head again, he extended his arm with a little wiggle for her to take. "Come on, it's been long enough."

Domestic

"No!" Chel denied. "You are such a clod." Being a piece of dirt was the ultimate insult apparently. "They ain't for Christmas. On my day off I saw them on display and I thought you might like them, I dunno." Chel was full of shrugs now that she had to admit why she had bought them. It was just like the coffee when he was in the desert- utter and complete muscle reaction. "Now I feel stupid about it ugh. I'll just give them to Abbi or something." Her mind was already calculating how to pass off the enormous shoes as "woops I just forgot you have tiny feet."

With a long sigh, she took Jack's arm. "And why the hell would I get what everyone else gets you anyways?" she asked him, almost growing more insulted as she spoke. She would have seemed actually angry had her cheeks not been puffed out like some kind of adorable rebuffed frog. "What do you take me for?"

"Aww." His free hand touched his chest as he mimicked her accent. "Well aren't ya sweet. They've got s**t quality, though, and I doubt they'd survive AK bouncing around all the time. If you can return them, do it; I won't even tell anyone it happened." The aforementioned hand crossed over his heart.

He had a retort but it slipped from him when he saw her face and laughed. "I don't even know anymore," Jack replied as he started them back towards camp, both a joke and the truth. "You just are."

Domestic

"Stop being mean," she chided him with a flick to his cheek. "Or I'll tell Abbi and you'll never hear the the end of it." It was, she assumed they both knew, a very legitimate threat.

When they got back to the camp, most everyone had gone to sleep. Jordan was still lingering around the table, but upon the twosome's arrival she said, "Ugh, finally! Some of us want to sleep you know!" Then with a little huff, she too went to her tent.

Chel let go of Jack's arm and said, "I'm bettin' the enormous baby wants to go to bed eh?" She stretched herself out and continued, "I'm gonna sit by the fire awhile I think. Warm myself up and s**t." The "fire" was little more than embers and the occasional spark, but it was still giving off heat and that was more than enough for Chel.

He snickered again but didn't push for more; the threat was legitimate.

"A big baby who beat your score and knows how to stay warm," Jack retorted with a deliberate collar adjustment before nodding to Jordan in greeting. Wren was in her tent, thank God; no worry for a s**t ton of rambling this time. "Who's on watch, Jordan?"

"Yeah okay, we'll see who's singin' later when yer freezin' yer a** off. I can hear ya now-" Her voice rose to a girl falsetto. "-Chel please come please with me I'm soooo cold!!"

She heard a snicker from Jordan, but the mist said nothing on the situation. She merely answered Jack's question as she zipped her tent close. "Ask your girlfriend."

"I'll take watch," Chel said quickly, not wanting to open that conversation up. "And I'm gonna watch the fire real closely." Chel set off for the fire, somewhat tinged by Jordan's comment. Like the shoes hadn't been enough to remind her. Once there she threw herself into one of the chairs and pulled her legs up so that no part of her was touching the ground. "Wasn't gonna sleep anyways."

Domestic

Unperturbed by Jordan's tease, he moved closer to the fire himself to catch a little extra heat. "You sure?" he asked Chel. "You've been on your feet longer. I can take first watch."

In truth he didn't want to sleep with the déjà vu and mockery of nostalgia mix creeping on him. The last thing Jack wanted was to spend his first night thrashing on the hard ground and further souring his first impression with these people.

"Do what you want," Chel said vaguely, reaching over her chair for one of the blueish water bottles that littered the campfire circle. "I'm gonna be here whether you do or don't."

Stubborn as an ox until the very end. "I don't think you caught the part where I said I can't sleep," she insisted with a roll of her eyes. Then she unscrewed the cap and took a long drink so she didn't have to talk anymore.

"And why's that?" he asked as he rubbed his hands together. "Is it the bracelet still? Or did you really come that unprepared for the weather?" Even at his most casual, Jack still sounded mildly condescending.
