Jaric

When the angry brown attacked Emmitod, Jaric jumped and stumbled backwards, nearly bumping into Vesresh. The brown didn't stay there long though, and when he started striking at other boys, Jaric turned and ran, trying to get away from the flashing claws. He couldn't go too far though, he knew he needed to stay with the other Candidates, so he kind of scrambled around the edge of the group until the fighting seemed to have stopped.

When he paused, panting, and looked back, he found that the two fighting greens from before, as well as a third green, were keeping the brown away from the Candidates. Maybe...he would Impress now and stop attacking? And the greens seemed more interested in showing off than fighting against each other, right?

Vosin

Luckily Kylerr spotted her. She sensed he was happy where he was; the teen grinned and nodded.

Vos stretched slightly. With all the dragons on the boy's side there wasn't much for her to do. It would be kinda find to sneak over to the boy's side and see it from that side. Her head popped up when she heard Kylerr screaming. Luckily he hadn't been hurt she thought, but it was his friend who'd faced the mean brown. Well! She tried to catch the boy's attention to see if he needed help with his friend, but wasn't sure she'd be successful.

The brown for his part now seemed to be trying to find his rider. It'd be good to get him off the sands. She wanted to laugh at the greens keeping him in line. Or maybe keeping the unworthy candidates out of his bubble. Another green had also hatched, though she seemed to be doing fine on her own. The seriously wounded boy was quickly removed from the sands, though the sands were now stained red.

Vos glanced at Ves. "Hey I'm ok with going over there if you really want." She didn't think Ves would go unless she went anyhow. The teen glanced at the girls standing around. It'd be fun to get Vee over there too.

Kalendol watched, yeah unfortunately she was unable to hide her amusement at this moment. Fadrin had not only impressed but had stood up to a charging brown. That took guts that she knew she'd be unable to handle. But it was sweet too. The fact that Kylerr kissed the other boy's cheek made it even better~! Cute moments for the win.

Kylerr's shriek made the hair on the back of Zen's neck stand on end. She couldn't see the boys side of the line clearly from where she stood but even in the heat of the sands, the emotion in that scream made her blood run cold. Death. It had to be. Or very near it. Had the brown killed two candidates so early? Zen glanced at their numbers and then back to the eggs. How many candidates were normally lost in a hatching? The candidatemasters had said to not get in the hatchlings ways if they showed aggression and that's exactly was Fadrin had done.

The question actually bothered Zen and she turned to the nearest girls. Hopefully one was a weyrbrat. "Hey... how many candidates normally die at one of these things?" Two down to one still-unbonded hatchling didn't seem like good odds when three of the others out there were also showing a taste for ichor.

Vesin looked back and forth between the boys and the hatching dragons to the scary brown to the girls around her as she contemplated Vos' question. It would be risky. What if the candidate master got mad at them? What if a dragon got confused and betweened or mauled them? At least they'd be with Esre. "Wherholds have done away with a lot of the traditional stuff so lets go make sure nothing happens to our little brother." She said as soon as she made up her mind. When one of the other girls asked a question, Ves turned to Zen. "It happens sometimes. You never know what these hatchlings are going to feel." She told her with a slight frown before taking a few steps towards the boys' side.

Invasive was clearly on a mission, she stalked right past Keep Out - though she gave him a wide berth - and past her sisters and then she moved in amongst the male candidates. Eyes flashing vivid green she nosed at knees and sniffed around boots, seemingly searching for something but then weren't all hatchlings?

Keep Out meanwhile seemed to be calming a little more or at least he was distracted enough by his search for his posture to start to relax but then something else seemed to catch his attention; his head snapped around and his eyes fixed on Jikkiri. The big brown did not move even a muscle but his focus on the boy was incredibly intense. Charging and Shrieking looked at him suspiciously but their focus on him seemed to be waning, they were glancing at one another ever more often and starting to hiss and flash their teeth again.

And then there was something else to divide the attention of the crowd; the Gold Egg gave a powerful twitch and keen-eyed candidates might just about be able to make out a long crack running down its length.

Vosin

Vos found her attention momentarily distracted by another girl standing nearby. She elaborated on her twin's comment to Zen. "Depends on the tendencies of the clutch. The calmer the clutch the less likely someone is to die, so the more violent the clutch the more likely it is. That boy was lucky taking on the brown like that. If that green hadn't stopped him he'd have gotten mauled worse, maybe dead. I think over all frequent deaths are rare." She grinned, hoping she'd reassured the girl.

"Exactly." The green-eyed girl said firmly. This was their brother. The couple tentative steps from Vesin was all she needed. Grabbing her twin's hand, Vos started to sneak her way closer to the boy's line. She did her best to avoid the searching dragonets.

"Well yeah..." Zen's mouth twisted in a dissatisfied frown. "Is it normally like one or two per hatching or did they estimate on the optimistic side in lessons?" Her face shifted towards the other twin as Vosin expanded upon her sister's initial answer. "So one brown with a burr up his bum making mincemeat of two boys isn't that common?" Too bad he wasn't the only violent one out there. Zen wondered if it was because of the wherhold itself, or an inherited streak from the clutchmother. If the later, well the wherhold couldn't ask for a better broodmother for it's future fighters. Sure they were killing kids now, but having a weyr of proven battlers would serve them better than a mess of pacifists judging by their recent actions. Maybe that's why Banshideth was transferred here? Zen shrugged the thoughts off. Animal breeding wasn't her thing.

She watched Vesin move towards the boys side with a suddenly interested glint in her eye. Bloody or not. The dragons were over there and not here. Maybe the twins were on the right track. Why should the guys get all the attention before the girls? If they continued on their path, Zen might just follow them.

Vesin looked around wearily, glad that Vos was leading her around the dragonets, she smiled kindly at the one they had jsut finished talking to, always glad that Vos could refine her thoughts for her. The glint in Zen's eyes as they walked away made her wonder if others had thought about doing the same thing but didn't really have a partner in crime to accompany them. With another look back at her, she jerked her head and raised her eyebrows as if asking if she wanted to come with them. Her eyes were on Esre as they skirted around male candidates and boys alike until they finally made it to him. Ves stood on his right side and put a comforting arm around his shoulder. "Your first hatching is turning out to be an exciting one isn't it? Don't worry. We won't let you get hurt." She said reassuringly.

Kalendol blinked her eyes, it was quieting down at least, slowly she looked towards the eggs and stifled a breath as she thought she saw a crack running down the length of the gold egg. But she turned her head away briefly, back onto the Brown in the midst of the boys. Was it just her or was the brown looking awfully long at Jikkiri. 'Oh, no way.' She thought in amusement.

Zen's grin broke wide as Ves read her mind. White teeth flashed in the dim light. Yes she had just been talking about the high potential for death in that direction, but you had to take your chances if you were going to succeed. Maybe the girls were going to protect their little brother, but Zen had her eye on those dragons. The brown, and the three greens still unbonded were over here. Not where the girls were standing. Let those hopefuls watch the gold egg as it shivered in place. Zen didn't discount her own chances for that one, but it was still in it's shell. She'd worry about it later. Why should these dragons choose their partners before even considering her?

"Hey kid." Zen greeted the twins brother as they drew up behind him.

Vosin

"Not normally, or they might have trouble getting kids to stand here." She laughed. If you knew your odds weren't that good, would you really still try? Vos felt that the death rate for these events was low enough to be worth the risk. Non-fatal or handicapping maulings of course didn't count. "Minor maulings are a bit more normal at any given hatching."

"Bit exciting over here eh?" Dropping Ves' hand, Vosin stepped up to the left side of Esre, forming a solid wall of red-heads, with a nonchalant grin for her brother. She twisted her loose hair and draped it over her left shoulder. It felt incredibly odd to have it loose but she didn't have time to braid it. Vos was incredibly amused to find the girl had followed them over.

"Don't think we got your name. Vos, Ves, and Esre." She indicated each in turn with the introductions.

"Zen. Zennaren." The tall brunette returned the favor. "Eh, you don't grow up on a fishing boat without seeing a fair bit of blood. It's not exactly like sitting on a lake with a rod and a wineskin after all. You'd be impressed by the amount of damage a good sized fish can do and most of them don't even have teeth."

Invasive's personal mission continued and - after a little while - she came across Jamarin. She had been about to move on again when something made her do a double take and back up. The green's eyes narrowed, flashed orange and she squealed at him before starting to make abortive snatches at his clothing.

As Invasive started her piercing call the Suspicious Egg rocked again and cracked open to reveal a handsome pale brown with darker barring on his legs. His eyes flashed white as he picked himself up and he gave a loud chattering call along with a few flaps of his wet wings before setting off towards the commotion near the candidates.
