"No way!" Chel exclaimed, putting her fist down on Owain's shoulder. "Oh sorry- but no! Owain wouldn't tell me some stuff about you so I know this cutie won't." She reached across the giant to flick Jack and added, "Don't try 'n trick me like that."

Slowly she was learning to stand up for herself.

Eventually they arrived at the labs and Chel dejectedly climbed off her friend. "Aw sweet pea I'll miss ya. You gotta let him come out more Jack. He's a real sweetheart."

But unfortunately Chel couldn't deny Owain's departure. "Next time I'll bring Tensy." She frowned at her bracelet, tugging it lightly. "Ya know. When I can."

Jack scoffed and swatted at her hand; it was hardly a trick. "We'll see," he repeated, opening the door and gesturing for them to go in. "The point of these golems is for study, not so you can socialize."

With a reluctant smile, Owain ducked inside. "Are they not the same?" he pointed out as they headed back to the pod, still tracking a little dirt in his wake. He glanced at Chel. "But that sounds like a wonderful idea, sweet Chelsea. I, and I am sure Jack as well, would love to meet this mysterious eyeball monster!"

"She's got a what now?" Jack asked with a small frown.

"We did study!" Chel protested. "I got some info from him 'bout forest giants for my specialization thingy!"

Chel watched sadly as Owain squeezed himself into the tiny pod, frowning as though Owain was going to be gone for good. "Hyeah I got a beholder for my weapon. You didn't know?" She could have sworn she'd told Jack at some point. Maybe it just felt like she did because he was in her head anyways.

< I will not allow myself for presentation currently. >

I couldn't present your a** if I wanted to anyways.

"Bye Owain!" she said with a wave as the lab tech fired up the machine. "Well not really bye, you're still gonna be here. See you later?"

"Must have slipped my mind. But, well, good to hear." Jack yawned again. At least he sounded satisfied this time, hearing she had done something useful with the time. And without him having to suggest it either. Miracles.

After Owain first sat down in the pod, he reached out and with the lengthiest fingers tried to ruffle Chel's hair, an action he had seen her do and hoped to mimic with the same friendliness. "Until next time," he said with a warm smile before compacting himself into the rest of the space. The pod door closed with a small hiss, and the tech adjusted a few settings before it started to hum. Within the minute the familiar armlet appeared in the slot.

"So, was it worth it?" Jack asked as he slipped it back on.

Chel then slid to Jack and threw her arms around his shoulders (which inevitably tugged him downwards due to the height difference).

"I found out you're gonna propose to me," she whistled, "Ah course it was worth it." It was very odd thinking of Owain as a mere bracelet now, somehow sad and incorrect.

She noted that Jack had both napped during their meeting and yawned now. "You been sleepin' okay?" She had yet to detach herself from his shoulders.

He bristled as always at the contact but chose to retaliate by flicking her nose, rolling his eyes as he forced himself to straight up. Bad dog. "I'm fine," he replied. "I've just been getting midnight shifts more lately." It wasn't strictly a lie. "Anyway, do you need to be somewhere? You mentioned multiple shifts."

"You tryin' to get rid of your fiancee? Wow." She feigned swooning and flinched against his flick. To which she responded with a flick of her own. Very mature adults they were.

She pulled out her phone and checked the time once more. "I got a good half hour." Still she hadn't detached her arm as they walked out of the pod room. "What about you?"

"Stop that," he complained after the second flick, giving her a light shove to try and fully pry her off. His nose was now smarting and he rubbed it with a pointed scowl before consulting his wristwatch. "I have about an hour and twenty before my night shift, but that doesn't matter. I won't even need ten minutes."

Gesturing for Chel to follow, Jack led them out of the pods section and towards the locker room. Like a well-oiled machine he turned his lock left and right without so much as a blink, slipped it off, and opened his locker. A folded set of scrubs was at the bottom, and atop it was a shopping bag. Jack plucked several boxes of green hair dye out, put them to the side, and took the bag out, leaving just a box from Apple within. Then he slipped the earphones off from around his neck, delicately set them inside, and offered the bag to Chel.

Chel followed obediently and when prompted to she held the bag, relatively unsure what was going on. She thought he was just asking her to hold it while he continued to rummage around, so it remained unopened and just in her hands. "You gonna show me a dead body or something? 'Cause this kind of feels like a dead body moment."

She eyed the boxes and said, "Oh sweet. You gonna dye your hair back?"

"Yeah, probably sometime this week if work lets me."

He rolled his eyes and gestured at her. "Just open it, Craft." Inside were the headphones as she'd seen him place, and it was easier to see the Apple box now: it read iPOD NANO.

"The headphones are the noise-cancelling kind," he explained. "If you hit the switch on the left side, it'll block out pretty much any sound except what you're listening to. There's a 4 gig nano in there to avoid it being silence; I even managed to find a hot pink one."

"Oh!" she said abruptly, unaware that the bag was for her.

She peeled back the plastic to reveal the ipod and the headphones, giving Jack a bewildered look as he rattled on about the specs. She pulled the headphones around her neck, clicking through the ipod.

One somewhat obvious fact about Chel was that through middle school and high school she had been the kid who insisted that music was necessary for falling asleep, that "music is my boyfriend" and what have you. Not having it on Deus hadn't been unbearable of course, but this did make her life somewhat more comfortable.

"Wow I ... I mean thanks man." She quietly pressed the buttons, smiling as sound disappeared, even though it was unncessary. The headphones went to lie around her neck and she straightened up, adjusting imaginary glasses. "What do you want?" She then stepped closer and nudged him. "That was you."

Jack watched her reactions curiously. "There's nothing there yet," he added as she took the iPod out. "I used mine to test the headphones. They should be fine, though. I couldn't hear a word you two said even with the softest music on."

Then she made a face at him. Good thing she clarified.

Jack made a face of his own as he crossed his arms. "Count it as a combined birthday present for both last year and this year," he replied. "Don't think I ever asked when it was either. I also didn't want to hear you complain again about the bracelet keeping you up, so I found a solution."

"S'the fifteenth. Er, February fiftteenth," she said, scratching her head. "Day after Valentines, easy to remember."

The gift was thoughtful, too thoughtful. She was reminded of her own birthday present for Jack, which still lay in Abbi's safekeeping. It seemed to pale in comparison to this.

Of course Jack would one up her without even trying.

One corner of her mouth lifted in a smirk and she said, "You really do got a heart."

He shrugged, though he was terribly amused by the statement. "I fix problems if I see them, that's all," Jack said. "Not to mention I put you in this position, so..." Another shrug, unsure of how to round off that sentence.

It was probably the closest he'd gotten to saying sorry. He looked uncomfortable just hedging around the words. Jack still felt it was the right course to admit her for observation, but it didn't mean he was stoic to the conga line of consequences for it.

"So if you're good with all that, you're free to go."

"Ain't good with that," Chel said, pulling out the ipod once more to check the time. "I got 25 minutes now, and you still haven't said sorry."

Her hands went to his sides and she said, "C'mon. I know you know the word. Say you're sorry." Her look was oddly mischievous. It was half way between serious and joking. Mostly because depending on how he reacted, she was ready to either play it off as a joke, or absorb the seriousness he required.

It was odd she wanted the answer so badly. She didn't blame Jack at all- she still believed it was her fault 100%. She just wanted to know if he was willing to bow his head to her.
