Betrayal.
A spider sunk its fangs into her, and she didn't cry out or retaliate. She just looked a little bit sad.

Predictably, she set off a trap that sent both of them back to regroup. Namely because they had pretty much just died.

Mimsy hoped they could do without the creature this time.

It was not too much to ask (this time), thankfully.
The maze was easy to navigate now, having been through it many times already, and she passed through without any difficulty whatsoever. It was the least dangerous portion of this, so it wasn't necessarily a relief that she'd made it - the next step, however, was not quite the same.

This always seemed to be the part where she injured herself past a level of sustainability.
Mimsy took a deep breath and closed one eye as she descended into the moat, careful to avoid any of the obvious methods of injury. It was not a very good idea to use the thorns as handles, for instance, and she knew better than to use a creature's head as a stepping stone.
The method seemed to be working well so far, at least.

Halfway through the moat, something smiled at her.
It was mid-air, and it disappeared as soon as she looked directly at it, but she was certain that it had been there. She shook her head and tried to continue onward without allowing it to get to her, though her thoughts wandered predictably towards Alice.

The grin did not return, unfortunately, but something else did.
A shadow split into two, as if it were practicing some sort of bizarre cell division, and hurled itself towards her. There was no time to summon Svensyl, despite how quickly he said otherwise, so she scrambled up the bank in an effort to get away from it.
She was covered in little scrapes and thorns, and all sorts of seeds were attached to her coat, but she seemed to have made it relatively unharmed.

In the room that awaited her beyond the moat, Mimsy found nine display cases. She let out a short exhale of amazement as she glanced over each of them - this was exactly what she had read, but it meant something entirely different to see it with her own eyes.
Now that she was here, she wanted to record as much data as she could about all of them. She wanted to write down everything, until her notebook could not contain any more observations, and might have chanced injuring herself in the unstable environment had a humming noise not caught her attention.
As soon as she began to listen to it, she found herself drawn towards one of the cases. Within it was exactly what she had been looking for, and she sighed in relief, pleased to see that it was still there after many years' time.
With the familiar tune to guide her, she opened the display case and reached to touch the spider. It immediately sprung to life, crawled up her arm, and settled itself in the middle of her chest.
It didn't move again - just stared up at her with eight glimmering eyes.
Adorable.
